- Today in Ethiopia due to the Italian Invasion a rift between Haile Selassie and the military will rapidly grow and when the moment is right, the Provisional Government shall rise up in the Name of the People to ensure Ethiopia's survival from the colonizers.
Along the way we will be exploring the African Union tree and shall be showing why this big tree despite all it's potential is ulitmately a bad use of a players time.

I could've also just posted this as a suggestion to Hoi4 forums however I already have thirteen suggestions there, so my faith in making a fourteenth and having that achieve any real change is let's say, silm. They still have their place but y'know. In any case I haven't done this tree yet so it was a good opportunity to cover multiple things at once.
My main problem for me with Ethiopia is that most of it is an African tree, not a specifically Ethiopian one
You can't really blame them. It's entirely laughably ahistorical, you either have a tiny focus tree like New Zealand or Canada or an insane one that makes no sense

A: considering the lack of content in Africa I personally don't consider that a problem.
B: thats semi historical. During the cold War Ethiopia became a shining example of anti colonialism in Africa.
C: the only way to make Ethiopia powerful is to make it possible to expand heavily into Africa. Its not like most other focus tree countries which are powerful from the start.
@@mappingshaman5280 Yeah I agree with all of that but that doesn't make the focus tree less dumb or insane. I can only imagine how hard the job is for the guys who write the flavor descriptions at pdx.
@@mappingshaman5280 i do think there should be other ways to make Ethiopia powerful without expanding that much into Africa, maybe a path where they get the Horn of Africa itself (Be by diplomatic means or conquest or rebellion), then the other focuses go toward developing the land and such.
Finished playing African Union on the communist side 3 days ago. I managed to liberate and integrate entire continent by 1960. At that point the game was running so damn slow that one day was 10 secs long. I made a nice screenshot tho. Worst thing was that you can't liberate more than one country at time. Over all nice path, but Pdx like Pdx will most likely never change anything.

@@UlulvarCape I played on non historical and had 3 options:
1. Fight German Empire led Europe with occupied Soviet Union
2. Fight Comunist China, comunist Japan, USA and French Commune on exile.
3. Slowly make your way white peaceing until liberating all Africa, and go AFK banking pp.
3rd option was less shitty. But I belive on historical this would be much easier.

The path is inherently counterintuitive and counterproductive. In order to progress the African Union, you require a TON of PP. However, the more anarchist you are, the LESS PP you get!!!
Ethiopia has essentially 2 kinds of peace events.
Those that give you the land you currently occupied (anarchist, Haile Selassie stays, italian peace offer)
And those that essentially reset your borders to what they would be before the war (Haile Selassie leaves, communist, kinda facist)
I absolutely hate the achievements where you need to liberate countries and get them in your faction. South Africa has one as well.
Focus trees like these make me genuinly think that people who make these simply dont play the damn game. Anyone with half a brain would see how this is barely any fun, but pdx are always better at thinking of funni meme paths and not actually executing them
The sad part is that funny meme paths are awesome... but only if they're actually well integrated. So seeing them missing the shot like this hurts even more.
Imagine having the time and energy and braincells to play up to the 70's and 80's of hoi4 to integrate all your land (I Know I dont I can barley get to 1945+)
And the worst part about all of this is that it doesn't even matter anymore at a certain point because the compliance is so high

This is one of those path where I have no idea what they were thinking the idea of it is interesting but how they expect you to achieve anything with it I don't know and even then the reward if everything goes well is nothing
The idea (for me) is just interesting. The idea of Ethiopia helping and freeing the African colonies and join to become one, free nation is cool.
But the gameplay and how you can achieve it... sucks as heck.
Everything about it is cool and fun, it's just too costly.
Which is why I cheat and give myself political power.

They do, but Ethiopia doesn't have the convoys to receive it.

The problem is not industry, as Malaya and Indonesia have plenty of resources.
The problem is also not anarchism (at least in game), because Anarchist Spain can unlock several different resource-prospecting decisions, as well as improving the Anarchist Society spirit with a bajillion different buffs to industry and recruitable population (the catch being a permanent and constant stability penalty).
@@colBoh resource prospecting is late game and not really worth it. Lack of resources makes most of Africa worthless beyond manpower because for obvious reasons they cant have much industry. At least if you could get resources you wouldnt have to trade what little factories you have for them

I ve come to that realization right after the dlc dropped. The biggest issue is that there is nothign to gain from it because Africa has no resources nor factories. So it is all worthless land.
If you want to have the biggest effect with African Wildfire: do the ones that have the most victory points (like Congo or Nigeria) but also the ones from Vichy France (mainly in the south due to its isolation from the rest of the Axis).
There's a massive issue with a lot of focus trees, where doing things is pointless. Achievements too. I've tried several but RNG just screws you over no matter what you do. Hugeoslavia, at one point, had an alleged easy cheese method, and no matter what of the 2-3 tutorials I tried did, the RNG was never in my favor out of 15 attempts or so that I made. Just a bit maddening.
One dumb thing about The african union is that for some reason you can invite european countries with capitals from cores in africa ( A capped afro-portugal or a capped spain are most likely) I think their a.i is hard coded to not accept any ethiopian offers though

My proplem with Ethiopia's focus tree is that even if you annex and core all of Africa, you only get manpower and some resorces because Africa has no factories.
They just need to lower the political power required for each step and give some bonuses for the African Bank.

The most ironic thing hearing about the Anarchist taking until the 80s to integrate Africa was the very time Communist Ethiopia was around at the time, they did 1 of the worst man-made famines in history and was the inspiration to do the Live-Aid event there. If anything, the Anarchists would have starved out the country just like this tree starved your time.
The famine, as far as man made factors went, has the highlights of Haile Selassie and the nobility confiscating a bunch of farmland for themselves, leading to a revolution that brings the DERG to power; leading to insurgencies with other communist groups made up of ethnic minorities who the DERG doesn’t treat well on top of war with neighboring countries, and the DERG fucking up the famine even further with authoritarian resettlement policies, most if not all of which I don’t see happening in the scenario of Ethiopia having been an anarchist commune since the 30s.
they should have let you use a mix of the border war mechanic, uprisings and maybe some treaties & agreements with the axis and allies to get free cores and land. Also maybe make the AI a bit more likely to accept certain demands. Making a continent wide African USSR would have been a really fun path and it kind of sucks that they made it completely impractical.
I like the mechanic, its just very poorly executed. It should cost 10 times less pp in my opinion.
Only thing I like about Ethiopia is construction speed boots.
The African Union focuses are definitely horrible. Classic Paradox quality control at work.
For a perfect African Union you need Belgium to be capped, France to go Vichy, Britain to go decolonized, Portugal and Spain to fight in brutal (e.g. civil) wars.

I know the idea is irresistible, but as Ethiopia will end up going to war with the UK, i’d recommend not closing pockets when you dont have to because a stronger Italy will help against the allies in Northern Africa

@@BubblesZest you know add additional combat wit, support equipment and so on. Pretty much everything regarding spending army experience on making the units better
