- Quilt labels are much faster if you write them with a fabric marker but which should you use? In this Fabric markers review video, I put 6 different types of fabric markers to the test, washing the samples over and over to see which of the fabric markers holds up to the typical kind of washing a quilt goes through.

I hope you all enjoy this one! I've been working on it on and off for a while (check out that long hair at the beginning! :)). Next Tuesday is my first off week, then I'll be back with a video on quilting the Jelly Roll Braid Quilt ruclips.net/video/h-f1tLIaErM/видео.html I made two and quilted them a little different, so I have two to share!
I am pretty sure you are one of the most down to earth quilting RUclipsr out there. Thank you am for sharing all your thoughts and expertise!
You were supremely informative about the products and now I can move foward with my brand thanks to your feedback..
I wash my quilts the same way. I have always used the sakura brand pigma micron pens and love them! No bleeding, no fading, and writes on fabric very well.
That’s great advice! Several people have mentioned those-they just didn’t come up in my Amazon search, so I didn’t try them out this time. I’ll definitely get some to try in the future though!
Its because they are not advertised as a fabric marker.
I’m a notary and use Sakura micron pens for my signature on notarized documents. They’re wonderful pens (archival quality ink) and come in a wide variety of tip size and colors.
I saw some plain white/black fabric designed to be colored in for kids clothing. But I came to RUclips to fine fabric marker reviews and I’m so glad you did this video! As fast as kids grow I don’t need heirloom quality hold, but I also want something that I know will work. Thanks for a great video!
I ordered The crafts for all markers
I didn’t test them but like that you did
For us with a budget I really like that you shared this so we can get the right ones.
Markers I really like the paint one and the Crayon markers I well be getting some of those .
This is exactly the info I needed. I’ve finished my first two quilts. Four more being quilted. I’m very anxious about doing labels. You have eased my fears. Thanks, Megan. Love watching you. 💕
I like that you will wash them same as you wash your quilts. Looking forward to your results!
This was extremely informative; thank you! I made a rag quilt for my grand daughter that has some plain squares that I thought she might like have her friends embelish/sign as a keepsake. When I was researching the fabric markers I wanted to include with the gift, I eliminated the Stained by Sharpie as they specifically state "not water resistant!" I ended up buying Super Markers which had good reviews and was an Amazon Choice. Good to know about the Stained/Sharpie when replacements may be needed!
Fantastically thorough review. Thanks for the helpful information!
Thanks for the test. I have wondered which would work best to make those quick labels.
Thank you so much for this testing! I’ve tried using archive quality fabric markers and some other fabric markers and they are either so fine that you have to print out your words and go back over them or the tips are thick and make it look like it’s a grade school student labeling them. Or even worse, is that they fade after just one wash! This info was super helpful.
I think fading is my big worry! I’d hate to go through all the work of making a label and then have it not even legible!
Thanks for this! I wanted an easier solution for labels for a couple of baby quilts. I have used the Tulip Fabric Paint Markers on reclaimed/ upcycled denim Christmas stockings, (the white only) and it they fit nicely in the stencil I used. They have held up for the last 10-ish years. We wash the stockings before we hang them and then again before they go away so that they are nice and fresh.
Wow! 10 years! That’s quite an endorsement!
This is good to know, thanks for the demo on these markers..I purchased a pack of 4 labels that said Made By: and then I filled in my name with a Sharpie and it bleed. I was disappointed and did not even put a label on the quilt. I will be ordering labels that already have my name on it but this demo is good to know for the times I may just want to write or doodle on the back of a quilt for someone.
Thank you for this test. I have been wondering about creating my own written labels. Very helpful!
Thank you for this! I like the way you tested by washing. That's how I wash my quilts too!
I’m definitely hard on my quilts 😂 I’ve been really pleasantly surprised with how well they hold up over the years!
Thank you, your testing procedure was great. Exactly the info I've been looking for.
So glad you did this! I have a few different sets of "fabric" markers and never tested them , think I will get some of those Stained markers.
Thank you so much for making this video! It's exactly what I was looking for
Thank you for sharing this important information!! Appreciate your expertise and experience so much!
💗🎉💗 Love your videos💗🎉💗
Thanks for this!!! Great testing! And thanks for encouraging quilt washing! I want my quilts to be used and loved! ❤️
Youre so welcome! I definitely wash my quilts hard! I started quilting when my kids were little and we were still doing lots of surprise morning laundry 😂My quilts were washed pretty much every couple of days on the sanitize cycle and are still holding up!
Pigma micron is what I use.
Perfect program!
Ive got your video playing in the background while I write a quiz for my kids for tomorrow....I love markers!!!!!
Me too!! I should let my kids draw on a bunch of fabric and make a quilt!
A very timely video for me! I am getting ready to complete a lot of quilts that I pieced during "stay at home" and I'm going to need a way to make labels quickly to keep up with the demand. I appreciate that you did this comparison and I am going to try the two that you seemed to like the most. Thank you!
I hope you enjoy them! I’m in the same boat-I’m trying to speed through a stack of tops! Thank goodness for quick allover quilting :)
thank you so much you have really helped me making the right choices.
Thank you for doing this! I’ve been trying to find a solution for labels since I don’t know how to embroider yet.
I’m so glad I could help! If you are looking to learn to embroider, quilt labels are a great place to start since they are so small :)
Thanks for this thorough review! Very useful!
Gesundheit! You're a peach, great lab testing, thank you!
Thanks for all of your research!!! Great video, I appreciate you!!🙂
This is awesome! Thanks for giving these various markers a try. By the way, I made an incredible label on a laser printer. I know, inkjets are really the thing. I read somewhere that laser would work too. I was super impressed (and excited) with the printing. The heat set with the iron worked well. Totally came out in the wash. Bummer! I'm so glad I washed it before gifting the quilt. It was awful. Live and Learn.
Just what I needed. I have used an “archival” artist pen that doesn’t say fabrics. It works good but I’m ready to replace it. Thanks
Thanks for doing the experiment for me.
Your results echo the results I have gotten in the past. The Sharpie rub-a-dub were very disappointing particularly when you are making clothing for a nursing home. Used the Tulip fabric paints while making costumes for the kids Halloween costumes and Christmas gifts.
It’s good to hear I wasn’t the only one disappointed with the sharpies! I’d almost thought maybe I’d done something wrong!
Thank you! May i suggest you try a second run with pigma? they are what is usually suggested for signing signature/memory quilts...
I’m thinking of doing a follow ip with markers that aren’t marketed for fabric but come recommended. I’m interested to see if they outperform the fabric markers! Everyone seems to love those pigma pens.
Great research, kindly shared - thanks!
Thanks for the research! This was great😀
Thank you for doing this test and sharing. Very informative.
Thanks very much for sharing this information and all your time and effort! Gesuntheit!
lol! Thanks!!
great information!
Hi Megan, Always happy to see your video’s. Thank you so much for this tip on markers. I have put off mailing out a couple of quilts because I haven’t taken the time to make labels for them and your tips will speed up the process. Love your out-takes 💗😂🤣 Have a great week, Chris-Raleigh NC
I’m so glad this helped!! I have a couple to send off as well :)
Very useful! Thanks! Bless you
Awesome video and testing. People ask all the time about labeling their quilts. I might have to look into trying the markers. I had labels made with a label maker, with my name
I’ve seen some people have sheets of labels made on spoonflower as well! It would certainly be handy if you always included the same information on your labels :)
Great video! Thank you!
Thank you so much for doing this.
Bless you...great review! Thank you ❤
So helpful. Thanks for doing all that work for us!
This is really helpful!
I do alot of embroidered cup towels for gifts, and when I complete one I sign it and date it. I have been using the Sharpie ultrs fine point marker in black. I have used this marker on flour sack cup towels. Washing my own in hot water with bleach, and never had the writing fade or disappear. This is not labeled as a fabric marker.
Good to know! I only tested markers labeled for fabric but other people are mentioning pigma pens as well :)
My Mom does labels with the pigma pens and sometimes she does them on the computer an prints them on that fabric that you use in a printer.
Excellent report, thank you
Really helpful thank you!
Thanks for all your research!!
Thanks for this!
I made my son and new Daughter in Love a quilt for a wedding gift and used a sharpie for the label and it has been washed one or two times and it is super faded already. I have an embroidery machine so I guess next time I will be pulling that out and using it
I almost always go to my embroidery machine as well. I know it will really stick around that way :)
Megan, I love yr videos, has helped me a lot.. Could you pls tell me the brand of chair that you sit on in the videos and yr review of it. Thanks
I'm glad you like the videos! My chair is the Markus chair from Ikea :). I really love it--I've had it for at least 8 years or so! It doesn't come in green anymore, sadly but its a great chair! The back locks upright or you can have it tilt back, so its really comfy both ways.
Have you tested on black or dark fabrics as well?would stained and crayola markers still be visible/pop out on dark fabrics?
Thanks for the research! Great options for labels and for autograph quilts! I already have a couole in my Amazon cart :-)
Autograph quilts!! That’s such a fun idea-I’d forgotten all about those!
well, talk about good, or bad in my case, *lol. I had a terrible time deciding on fabric markers while literally spending hrs reading all the different ones on Amazon last week. Yes last week. I did buy the shuttle art fabric set, mainly because they said, acid free and fade resistant and there are 36 colors. I bought them bc my 4 yr opd grandsons are getting color me fabric quilts this coming year for their birthdays and I wanted them to have fun with coloring their own quilts. My daughter in law may have my head for this. he he sure wish I'd seen this one a day or two sooner. I came this close to getting the vrayola set, it was quite a bit more expensive and that stopped me. Oh well I know for me what I will buy for my own use. Thank You for doing the work and report.
4 year olds drawing on fabric is the cutest idea! I had my son tie dye me some fabric over the summer and I can’t wait to try using it :)
@@TinyOrchardQuilts I should let you know my DIL is a pre-school teacher, and she has been teaching her children, also an 8 yr old, as well as the nephew since March. These boys are maybe a bit more advanced then normal 3 and 4 yr olds. I know they will have it added to their curriculum during winter.
Excellent!
Why didn't you try a Pigma pens? That's what I use.
No particular reason I didn't use them--they just didn't pop up at the top of my amazon recommendations :)
I used Pigma Micron 05 which I saw recommended on other vlogs, and it bled. I don’t understand why. I’m so sad.
@@kathyhowell5631 did you iron them before washing? I haven't experienced bleeding with those pens. Now I'm worried.
@@deebuettner8017 Yes, I did. The weird thing was, it was fine when it came out of the washing machine, but when I took it out of the dryer, it had bled. I washed in cold water, gentle cycle. I dried on delicates with extra low heat.
@@deebuettner8017 It just happened yesterday. My first quilt, and it’s a baby gift. :(
Love this!! Thank you
Very informative but at the end, I'm still not sure which ones work the best. How about a pic
Me too.. I was confused.. I didn’t know which one was the best 😩😩😩
Did you prewash your fabric? Also, did they bleed through to the back side? I love your video and the information. Thanks for sharing! (I also love the fact that you "use" your quilts)
Only the paint markers bled through-I did have a doubled layer of fabric though. I didn’t prewash for the first round but, obviously, the rest of the columns were washed. It didn’t seem to make much of a difference.
I love this sort of video! Thanks for doing it. It looked to me a bit like the Sharpie color markers ran as well. Is that just my bad eyesight? :)
Everything (except those paint pens) bled just a touch. Some were definitely worse offenders than others! I wonder if some fabrics might be better at preventing bleeding than others? Kona has a pretty tight weave but maybe it’s not ideal.
Thanks
Why no Pigma pens? (When I appliquéd, that was the pen instructors told us to use for embellishing. - "family established in year")
There wasn’t any particular reason I didn’t try them. I searched amazon only for pens and markers intended for use on fabric and those didn’t come up in the search. Several people have commented that they use them with good results.
Why would you pick the stains by sharpie over the tulip paint ones? Also how do you heat set?
Just found you. I have dime permanent fabric markers. Now I want to do this lol
I thought the stained by sharpie were a little easier to use and had a finer line. The tulip paint markers definitely had the best looking color but it would have to be a very big label since the lines were so thick.
To heat set, you just run your iron over the written on fabric for a few minutes :)
Thank you.
What is the purpose of writing on the fabric? What exactly are you writing? Date of purchase and yardage? I don't understand why you're writing at all on your fabrics. I use pieces of paper to let me know how many yards there are for when I'm searching for a fabric for a project. Thanks for your vid.
Its for quilt labels. It usually contains the makers name, who it is for, and a date. Some people also include additional information or decoration. It’s permanently attached to the back of the quilt.
@@TinyOrchardQuilts oh, so sorry, thought is was for fabrics for the quilt. Hmmm. Thanks.
Hi, New friend here👉🔔 Very nice this video like 👍👍 see you around.
Stay connected, stay safe, and go ahead with your own wonderful skill.👌
Did you prewash your test piece
At the end which one was the best? 🤔
I wonder if these do well being pressed?
I did heat set (press) them between washings and it did help. The one time I forgot to do it there was a lot more bleeding. I was worried some of them would fade or something in the heat but they all held up just fine!
@@TinyOrchardQuilts Thank you so much! I'm working on some signature blocks for a baby shower activity and was interested in the best product to use.
Micron markers: I’ve seen other quilters use them. Have you used them?
I haven’t used them myself but many of the comments here are recommending them! I ordered some for myself to experiment with :)
Tiny Orchard Quilts I’m about to try one. I will let you know how it turns out. I’ll follow your test method as best I can but it’s just me here, no little ones or animals 🙁, so it will take me a little longer. Thx for all you do!
So it took me 2 lunch breaks to watch this, not to learn how it handles sweat and big muscles stretching the cotton fabric out all the time.
how sweaty are these dogs? - no izzy

Thank you.
