Why I’m Wearing a Heart Rate Monitor During BJJ Rolling

- Recently I did a vlog where I said I was using a heartrate monitor during my BJJ rolling sessions. And I had several people ask questions about it. So, in this quick video I just share some stuff I'm doing and what I'm looking for with my heartrate monitor when I do Jiu-jitsu.
I was off the mats from normal rolling and training for about a month and so I'm doing this to monitor my training as I'm coming back to normal training after an injury. Consider it a kind of experiment.
Here's the chest strap I've been using: amzn.to/3xWXt0k
I'm trying a few different gadgets out currently. So as I get more info and experience with them I'll share them with you.
It's been interesting to see the results too. Right now, I'm starting to get back into normal shape and I can see that I'm able to push myself harder during rolling while not making my heartrate jump too high. Compared to when I just came back, and my heartrate would rise up much faster.

This is crazy that you you posted this video today! I’ve been following you for well over a year. I’ve not once been curious about the heart rate monitor until I finally asked a buddy about his last night after rolling. Then I saw this today…
I've been thinking of getting one for ages and decided last night after training I was going to get one this week...
I have been wearing one for a few years. Lots of good info from it.
I noticed on your readout you have some drops to zero where it’s losing connection to your phone. Usually happens when someone is on top of you and the signal is smothered. You can set it to store your training on the monitor itself and then download it afterwards. Then you have no gaps. I have recently had some issues with mine dropping pairing mid workout though, which is irritating. I think it is because mine is 4 or 5 years old.
I just used the Polar HR for the first time and the same thing happened to me, it lost connection on several occasions. It is still interesting, as I had never been able to control the amount of calories to burn during the roll, as well as the frequency of my heart. It is a great help. I still recommend it👍🏻
Nice content! First time I see something about HR in jiu jitsu..
Yes! The BJJ community needs to know about this. I've been tracking for a few years now and having an idea of the work you put in to a session to see how hard you went when it comes to HR zones and calories is super helpful. Garmin has similar options with their fitness trackers. Good way to see recovery needed afterwards as well.
Could you recommend which garmin moniter would be good? 🙏🏼
@@joshfontanella I've tried all the coospoo ones on Amazon and they all died on me in 3-6 months. The one I have now works the best but if it's not positioned my chest perfectly it doesn't pick up my HR. I'm honestly looking for a better solution like the whoop armband (except those aren't free and kind of pricey).
I have the GARMIN HRM-Dual right now. It works, and is $70 when I've already spent $90 on three cheap ones that broke quickly. Good luck. If anyone has suggestions on more reliable HR data devices I'm all ears. Best thing is I can use my watch I already have to connect to it.
doesnt the HRM dual need to be connected to your watch for it to work?@@djg093
I am thinking about buying the garmin one. Do you have any experiences with it?
how's your garmin holding up? Interested in the dual as it's the only one with a replaceable strap
Love great fitness tools!
The Polar Pro Armband is perfect for BJJ. Been using it since I got into the sport and it works a treat - NEVER gets in the way and records perfectly as long as the rash guard doesn’t flip it by accident.
Thank you for the information on the heart rate monitors, Professor Chewy.
Hope you recover from the Meralgia Paresthetica condition.
What’s that?
@@Chewjitsu
Hi Professor,
I believe that is the name of the nerve condition that your physical therapist was referring to when treating you.
The lateral femoral cutaneous nerve becomes inflamed.
Your physical therapist mentioned that this condition often develops in women that wear tight yoga pants, but many men develop this condition also due to tight pants, or trauma.
In your case, you mentioned working mount with your opponents framing on a regular basis, inflaming the nerve.
I hope you have fully recovered.
I enjoy your videos, and learn a lot.
Thank you.
Be well.

@@medicineandbrazilianjiujit8511 oh yeah! Gotcha. It’s back to normal. The month off did the trick and gave it time to heal.

Good to hear, Prof. Chewy.
Take care.

I love my whoop strap with the compression sleeve for it.
Nice I use the garmin one same idea like to keep an eye on my rate to make sure I'm not over training.
Thank you for this Chewy your content is always so helpful!
Do you (or anyone reading) know of an app/device (apart from Whoop - too $$$ ) that monitors HRV and sleep?
I've been using my apple watch series 5 with a good non-velcro armband. Game changer. Tuck it in under my bicep close to the armpit and it doesn't get in the way. I'll wear it not just for rolls but for the entire session. The latest update shows not only a HR graph but also time spent in each zone
What non-velcro one do you have?
@@ashstampede +1
didn't anyone have an issue when did an armdrag to you or two on one tie?
have not run across any issues@@ValeryYudin
Hey Chewie how dose the polar heart rate monitor compare to the whoop?
I’ve been wearing the H10 for about a year during class/rolls. I’ve never had it interfere with myself or partners till last night when I was getting body lock passed, heavy head pressure into my chest and the monitor popped half off and poked my partner in the eye. I’m wondering if you tried out the armband monitor and how it worked.
That’s awesome 👏 - I hear woop bands work well, but you pay monthly and that adds up - I was in the market for a new watch anyway a few years back and after some research and investigation I bought a Garmin Forerunner 745 with a HRM that work well together - I get lots of useful data and wear it just about every time I train - leave the watch in the bag and the HRM stores the data (but many HRM will not record and save - gotta buy the right one).
Whoop also wants to be worn all the time. You even charit while wearing it. Shower while wearing it. It got old real fast.
@@zerobomb0 I can imagine 😝
Hello I've been looking for a HRM for BJJ. I have been thinking about the Garmin series since i run a garmin watch anyways. Would you still recommend one?
@@guitarnoob77 works for me and I love that I don’t pay monthly (save $$), but need to get the right HRM that stores data (yellow band on top) - uncomfortable at first but I got used to it and just had to fiddle with my weight setting to get a calorie count within reason - made for running/swimming so may not be as accurate for calories as whoop. I’m happy with it. Even tells your altitude & speed & HR average/max, etc. How long in each HR zone. Just need to make sure Bluetooth pairs with watch & HRM - keep phone & watch in my JJ bag while wearing HRM under rash guard.
@@FR-ty5vn For sure! Thank you for sharing your experience. I'm thinking about getting the Garmin HRM Pro Plus. Happy training!
You said after several hard training sessions, the next day your HRV is elevated and when you get to the gym your heart rate goes up quicker. I think you meant to say your HRV was lower. Low HRV is a sign of high stress and physical strain and other factors (i.e., alcohol). High HRV represents a good recovery.
Right. I meant HRV was lower and heart rate was elevated.
I do the same, I use the h10 polar. A few bits of tape over the monitor keeps it in place. Stays in place with back to back classes. If I don't use tape it pops off me I have found.
This is smart. I don't know why I haven't thought of that
@Vincent Stoyas gi or no gi works for both.
Great video. Been using Apple Watch but would like to try the chest band. What app are you using?
Thanks
They have their own app
It's okay man. You don't have to be ashamed of wearing the yoga pants
Huh?
@Chewjitsu check your vid at the 1:12 mark :-)
Yoga pants are for girls only. It’s sick that dudes wear spats without shorts. Totally unacceptable and gay.
Been using OH1 for bjj for a long time. Much better then the chest strap.
Been experimenting with these over 10 years. I’m a trainer and a black belt. If you have any questions I’d love to help out. Good luck
Thank you I'll check it out
I’ve switched to the chest strap as I found that the arm band kept rolling over and not reporting
I use Whoop wrist band but it’s been a gmaechanger for my sleep & workout heart rate tracking
How does it work with BJJ
@@badxradxandy you just put that you are doing jiu-jitsu or really any task before you workout & it will track it during water breaks you can check but typically I wait until after class been pretty solid. Has a thing called strain that just detects exertion of energy that you can track along with some other shit
@@badxradxandy You just purchase the arm sleeve, wear it around your bicep and it works well for Jiu Jitsu. Not invasive and people you rll with don't even know it's there.
Dose the whoop band come off easily when your rolling and is the info accurate during bjj sessions?
@@visionarystyle_ not if you use the arm sleeve. It's like a pouch that covers your whole bicep/tricep and goes under your rashie sleeve. The info is really accurate during the workouts/rolls.
I’m curious now of what heart rate monitor you are using at home
How did u fix the hip issue. I have the same thing in my elbow when if I lean on it even lighting its feels like it's on fire.
I've a question about the chest strap. When your sparring partner applies strong chest to chest pinning pressure (or the sparring partner is just heavy), does the heart monitor get uncomfortable being pressed into your solar plexus? I'm debating whether to get the Polar chest vs bicep monitor. The chest one is cheaper and has better reviews, but I'm worried about the discomfort.
Are you using the polar flow app or something else??
I've never been able to get the H10 to stay on during rolls. I use it during fencing practice and other GPP work, anything you're doing to keep chest pressure from popping it off you?
Nope. I just keep it snug and under my rash guard
As a new white belt, is it useful to roll with other white belts who are new? -Daniel Hoole
I think i have Meralgia paresthetica also! What are you doing to fix it?
Is it comfortable to use the HR monitor when rolling? I mean the hard part of the monitor might crush a bone when being mounted for example?
54 year old new to JJ with a previous (4 years ago) heart attack so am very interested in this. I find my biggest challenge right now is my heart rate and speed of recovery between drills. Was there any update on how things went moving forward? Did you stick with the chest monitor? Did those you roll with have any issues with it? Etc...
I still use it. No one has any problem with it.
seems like it would dig-in when you're applying chest-to-chest pressure
Its also helpful if you are a multi-sport athlete. I prefer that my run training acknowledges the shark tank I went through the prior evening rather than pretend that it never happened.
Tempted to try this with garmin has anyone done this? As id like to monitor all my sports eg cycling and bjj.
Do you use the Judo or Martial Arts profile in the Polar Beat app when recording your workouts with the H10? Do you keep your phone close by so it records in real-time or transfer the workout to the phone later when your workout is complete? Which has been more successful for you? Thanks! I'm trying to figure out how to best use this in my BJJ rolls.
I use Judo and then keep the phone somewhere around on the mat so I can glance at it if I need to.
@@Chewjitsu Great! Thanks so much for the response! Often these types of questions get ignored on RUclips, so I appreciate you responding.
@@TimSchmoyer no problem. Happy to help. And appreciate your videos too. When I was learning how to use YT years ago they were a big help.
@@Chewjitsu oh cool! If I can be of help to you in any way, let me know. Happy to help. I’ve learned from you, too. Happy to give back. And if you come up through Cincinnati sometime, come get some rounds in at our gym.
@@TimSchmoyer I’ll keep that in mind. I’m just down in Louisville.
Im wondering what BPM you guys are normally getting when rolling? Thanks!
Mine varies. It can be as low as 110s-120s if I'm moving light or just doing some drilling. During harder rolls usually getting into the 150s up to 180.
I'm fairly new to jiu-jitsu. I don't really have submissions that I can finish yet. But a buddy of mine offered to pay for my registration for a submission only competition... should I do it even tho I'm not that good at submissions yet and I most likely won't even place?
Fark yes! It's his money. Practice one submission that you're confident with and use it. It would be a good experience for you.
What HRV app are you using?
Elite HRV is the gold standard I believe
I bought this exact one and couldn't get it to work so I returned it. :/
Try the whoop strap
Seen them. Had some students try them. Not a fan really.
@@Chewjitsu that’s fair, hey love your content hope you are doing well and have a good day
@@theprofessor657 hope you’re doing well too bro!
Meralgia paresthetica!
bruh I was just looking for a heart monitor
Whoop trackers are easiest but they have subscription...
How about putting it on your waist under your underwear or using the whoop underwear with the hrm pouch?
I roll with a whoop arm band. Almost no one can tell.
