I've been watching your videos for a long time and this is the best wearable I've saw in tracking weight lifting because most of the wearables fail here. I mean yes, it struggled, but it caught the overall trend better than anything outside of the Apple Watch. It detects cardio sessions extremely well.

I've been using Polar Verity Sense for a month already. What I have found is that a biceps is not a good place for it when I, for example, do boxing or weightlifting sessions, because of a muscular traction. I use it on the forearm of my second hand (a Polar recommendation) and place it away from brachioradialis. I have nothing to compare, unfortunately, but I experience less weird jumps of an HR curve in this case.

Thank you this was helpful. Because i ordered the Verity earlier today. My need is to check my heart rate when I'm with my trainer doing weights, Tabata or other exercises. Plus my non-training days where i do cardio yoga etc.
I debated on getting the chest strap but thought the strap mat irritate under my sports bra.
Do you know. Is it possible to use the Verity against my chest where my sports bra acts as the strap?
      Thanks again for the tip...

The graph @2:46 is genius 😍
As the accuracy is very différent between cycling and weight training, maybe you could have included separated graphs for those 2 activities? We could have a confirmation of the good results on the bike/bad ones with the weights 😉
I have a Polar OH1 and happy with that, but the battery life gets poorer and poorer so I consider buying a H9 strap.
Thanks again for this great review 👌

Hi Rob I recently discover your channel and thanks for all the data and analysis you made, they are top hi level analysis and as engineers I LOVE it! Can I ask one think, GTR 4 ou TRex 2 are capable to sync with VeritySense? Because I just want good tuning readings, cycling readings and swimming readings, and VerySense I almost good as H10, but for me maybe more comfortable in the arm than in my chest. So I’ve decide to change my GTR 47 because GPS aren’t good for new one GTR 4 or maybe T-Rex 2, but I am just to make sure, if you have it to test, sync VerySense with one of those good and no so expensive smart watch’s.

    • @Asthbendriel
      @Asthbendriel 2 года назад

No, they perform worse, but it's not a problem of the sensor itself, but the position of the sensor in the body. The wrist is further away, introduces more noise to the signal, is a smaller area to collect data, and other factors makes it far more complicated to read data from the wrist rather than the arm or the forearm. In exercises like running, walking, biking and similar where there is little movement in the upper body and the wrist they perform quite well (despite the obvious delay in heart rate changes due to the further away position), however in exercises that involve tension on the wrist like weight lifting, they perform very poorly, measuring half of the HR quite often.

It would be very interesting if you were to rerun the test for weight lifting doing dumbbell squats, bicep curls and chin ups. Use the H10 as a reference line but this time hook the two optical sensors to a head band at the temple to avoid arm movement interfering and/or to your waist band to pick up femoral artery activity. I have an OH1 arriving in a few days and am eager to compare it to my Garmin Fenix watch attaching the OH1 to a headband while doing a sprint routine on a treadmill.

Do you have any thoughts on why the 'wrist worn' Apple watch, which is subject to all the problems of all other wrist worn sensors, is yet able to achieve the accurate results of the H10? Is it superior sensors which cost a lot that makes the difference, or is it the algorithm that processes the signals from the sensors or is it the circuitry that it all runs on that makes lag time a non issue? What are they doing that other watch manufacturers are not doing?
    Does Apple say?

How about testing in cool weather? This spring when temperatures were about 40F I learned that my watch gave crazy numbers as I'd start a bicycle ride, and then after a while gave plausible numbers. That sent me to the internet to learn about the problems in cool weather. I'll probably get an arm band device, but it would be good to know if any of them are better than others in cold temperatures.

Agree, would also be nice to see accuracy during leg only weightlifting exercises when you use the verity on the arm. That would clarify whether the inaccuracy is due to placement on active muscles or weightlifting itself. On his apple watch 7 review, the watch is on his wrist. would be nice to see weightlifting comparison between apple watch 7 and verity placed at wrist.

Do you have any idea what Apple does right to beat dedicated optical HRM (it's not really different price category as polar is hrm only) or the most expensive Polar, Garmin watches? Is it just leds that they use that make the difference? Their configuration? Algorithm? Garmin Fenix is also in completely different price category, but it doesn't help :) Maybe Venu 2 will change something, but still... Apple is so accurate for many years and I don't think they produce leds used themselves.

I'm looking for a HR sensor with memory to record surfing without a receiver nearby. I've tried the whoop 4.0 but for the price, the accuracy and limitations of the app, not to mention the cost, i'm returning it within the first 30 days. Ideally i'd like a chest strap because surfing can be a very peaky activity with long rest periods and then a frenzy of activity. The garmin chest straps would be great if they weren't slaved to a garmin watch and the bulk on the sternon is a big nono when leaning on a surfboard for paddling. anything you can recommend that's better than this polar arm strap? Thanks!

On the /r/rowing sub-reddit I've read that people are very happy with the verity sense with rowing on the Concept 2. Some people hit their chest strap HRMs at the end of strokes and so they find the arm strap to be 10x more comfortable. They say it works great with the Concept 2 PM5 and ErgData (the phone app that tracks your Concept 2 workouts). I'm considering getting one for the same purpose.

i think using the term "ecg" while only comparing heartbeat average readings' accuracy and hysterisis zones between optical sensors is quite misleading. if we can not derive quantized wave pattern graphs from these sensors we should always emphasize heart beat rate monitoring is different than sinusoidal rhytm pattern analysis, just my 2 cents. please keep up the effort bringing latest model devices to the portfolio, your ongoing standardized comparison is much appreciated and one of a kind!

Polar lately made a firmware update to increase the battery life from around 20 hours to 30 hours without a change on the hardware. Is the Verity Sense a new hard ware developement at all? Or is it only a Polar OH1 with a modified firmware, which lowers the sampling rate to increase the battery life? This would decrease the accuracy. If so, it seems not affect the accuracy measurement which is presented in this video.

I really liked those ones because they were quite inconspicuous and minimal, also it could be worn with a wristwatch, don't know how accurate those devices were but I was wondering if there's anything like that today, I've considered rings but they're kind of big for a ring and I would like something that had sleep tracking and could be worn on wrist not just clip it on clothes,

Hi Garluis! Yes, I do. I was thinking about it the other day. I considered buying one once (it was called the UP3 or UP4 I believe), but they did not provide good data access, so decided against it. Did you ever use one?😊

@@TheQuantifiedScientist Yes I had the first gen one, I used it to try to improve my sleeping habits and use the step counter to compare my jump rope workouts. I guess the tracking itself wasn't good but I really liked the no screen approach, no distractions with notifications and the look of the device. I haven't seen that approach again. I think a device like that with decent sensors would be killer

Any reason why you couldn't wear the Verity Sense in the same place as an Apple Watch (i.e. wrist) and then compare how it performed in the various tests? Maybe next time...

Thank you very much for your scientific video!!! I would ask you to test Polar Verity Sense as sleep monitor with App Sleep as Android.
I'm thinking what I should buy. Apple Watch Ultra or Polar Verity Sense for sleep monitoring and analysis of stress and HRV 24/7. Polar Verity Sense is much cheaper and there is a function of round-the-clock stress analysis. If Polar Verity Sense is as good at monitoring sleep as the Apple Watch Ultra, then you should take Polar Verity Sense because it is much cheaper and you can charge it less often.

I do not think HR monitor straps are made for lifting weights, if you like using chopsticks to drink water why not :)
You sold me on the H10, just strap it on and exercice. No buttons, no thinking about which light is on or off…

Hi Rob, and everyone. Have you been thinking about testing the effect on your sleep of a grounding bed sheet? I watched The Grounded (ruclips.net/video/cRW0XO2xWn4/видео.html) and decided to give it a try. I feel I sleep better, but I have no way to measure my sleep (hence my presence here) yet.
