    Its sad that so many people hate on the YM2612 when it can produce such great music as this.

      Who says they hate the Yamaha YM2612 sound chip? It’s quite amazing

  • @DeconTheed92

    That distinctive twangy bass sound is one of the most beloved sounds the YM2612 could make, to me, and this mix has a decent slathering of it~! The Socket rep alone put a smile on my face, and that Afterburner III track was a real eye opener; I gotta check that soundtrack out.
    If I had any criticism, I'd say it could've used a little Keisuke Tsukahara. The mans work on Alien Storm and Shadow Dancer prove that when he wrote basslines, they weren't just funky; they r i p p e d to such a degree that Flea would be jealous.

      +Decon Theed Developers must have liked that twanga bass guitar (Emerald Hill/Jewel Master) synth alot because it was recycled and used a lot more than most of the other bass synths in the YM2612. Rough twanga bass (Chemical Plant/Lava Reef) is probably the only other one that was flogged to death on the Mega Drive.

    Absolutely love the themes that have been done (I also only recently just realized that there is a parallel between the GST and EXT mixes having the same theme, idk why it took me so long to realize, lol), if there is one distinct instrument or sound that is recognizable from the Genesis/Mega Drive, its the basslines, I jam out so well to this Mix I loved it upon first listening to it, like a majority of the mixes!
    I have always loved that beginning section of the Final Fight CD track sounds straight out of The Golden Child soundtrack from the main theme, wouldn't doubt it was inspired, but it always gives me a chuckle. And of course another fantastic feature of an obscure Matt Furniss OST, that man really made the soundchip sound so freaking good. So many good groovy tracks with Socket, Double Dribble, and of course, Sonic 3! But I immediately found love with After Burner III, which admittedly I didn't even know existed, so thank you for showing me something even I didn't know about, Funky Bomb is a new favorite from the SEGA CD (sucks tho the US and EU/JP versions had a change up in the OST as this track is only prevalent in the International version), which sadly is a console I've yet to dive into deep yet, but now I must! And great end on Jaguar XJ220, I love discovering these new groovy tunes. Fantastic job as always GST!

    To be honest, I want to create like, a million RUclips accounts, Just for the sole purpose of liking your videos and subscribing to your channel. Your channel needs and deserves more attention than it's currently getting. I hope such thing happens in the not too distant future! (Your channel becoming more popular, Not the first thing I said x3)

    Mega Drive YM2612+PCM makes a great combination, resulting in a very clean, loud, full sound. SEGA DELIVERS awesome music. It's a shame that the misuse of GEMS plagued the sound chip reputation forever.

    Double dribble 8 is clearly inspired by Scritti Politti's Cupid and Psyche. Great mix!
    Just had a scroll through the comments and it seems that I'm not the only one to have noticed the likeness. Must be in good company if we are fans of that brilliant album.

    I knew the moment I started your first mix that if I kept looking, I would find Sonic 3 Hydrocity track somewhere on your channel. I've hated any and all "water levels" since I was a kid, but that track has ALWAYS been legendary

  • @elektrikhd
    @elektrikhd 7 лет назад +4

    Kid Chameleon also had some cool bass lines throughout, although "Mountain Area" in particular comes to mind--almost like bass with a melody played on a bass synth. Most TVs at the time couldn't do that soundtrack justice. Phantasy Star IV also had some really killer synth bass parts, especially in boss music.
    There's a few tunes here I know as well. I always liked the YM2612 bass sounds, and I don't understand the hate it gets.
    Maybe all these good bass parts are part of the reason I wound up being a bass player.

      Sucks that the original cart doesn't have a sound test, as emulators can't reproduce it properly. I'm in the process of ripping Genesis soundtracks directly from the console

    7:23 I must be below average because I can't seem to find an uploaded video of this song. yeah I know it's from the FM towns version but I've only seen the whole OST uploaded as 1 video and it kinda just throws you off a bit. it'd be nice and all if someone did find a separate vid for the song.

      Here's what I found after a bit of research:
      The Japanese and International versions of After Burner 3 (Sega CD) have a few differences. For some unknowable reason, one of these differences is that the international soundtrack was changed and shortened from the JP version. All of the soundtrack uploads on youtube feature the international version.
      I haven't looked at the FM Towns port, but judging by your comment, the same issue applies.
      That is........pretty weird.

    • @GSTChannelVEVO
      @GSTChannelVEVO  5 лет назад

      further research: The Japanese Mega CD version of After Burner 3 uses the same music from the the FM Towns version, which itself is an arrange of the arcade version of Strike Fighter (which itself is the arcade original that was renamed to After Burner 3 after being ported to the aforementioned systems.)
      The International Sega CD version of After Burner 3 uses the music from After Burner 1 for the FM Towns, which features an arrangement of the arcade version of After Burner 2's music.
      This is incredibly confusing.

      Yes, though I haven't thoroughly perused all of the games with AdLib soundtracks (yet). It's just random tunes scattered throughout my collection currently. (and even then, most of those are from arcades that happen to use OPL3 type chips)

    You say that it's unconfirmed that Michael Jackson worked on sonic 3, however the sega megadrive collection on xbox360 actually states Michael Jackson did work on the music...

    • @GSTChannelVEVO
      @GSTChannelVEVO  3 года назад +1

      From my research, it's an absurdly deep rabbit hole where multiple people *directly involved* in Sonic 3's music all have conflicting accounts.
      The safest thing to say is "MJ composed some of the music in Sonic 3, probably*"
      (and say the asterisk out loud)

      I grew up with Nintendo...
      But let's be honest here, each console have its own weaknesses and forces when we're talking about music. Genesis and SNES both have amazing OST, they're both awesome in their own ways.
      Also, this guy's mixes man... He sure know how to pick the best from Genesis' OST and make them even more awesome !
