one day when were really good at making these videos. thanks for watching
shouldve been a tie. no way the S.N.E.S. is better.
btw, sound test is available in the Genesis version.
Oh yeah, Ys III! I really liked that game... for Turbografx-CD.
Anyone notice how the Snes controller is upside down AND backwards. Yet he still acts like hes pushing buttons. Lol
You guys should re-do this one and have it be a triple-threat match with someone reprsenting the TG-CD.
While I agree that Nintendo landslides on the cutscenes, I'd have to disagree on the graphics; the brighter more colorful Sega graphics are far more appealing. It's like comparing the background setting to Far Cry to Generic Brown FPS.
On the lava stage that you compared, you missed that the Genesis is using the special effect "Line Scroll Function", where as, the SNES was not.
oo
oo
very good
TurboGrafx-CD: *Am I a joke to you?*
Your Genesis looks like it might need some new capacitors. You got some rainbow effects going on there. Using a 32X would help the colors as well.
Capacitors won't fix It. Trust me
"...and I murdered a white woman. And her lover." Was that an O.J. Simpson reference?
3:35 uh the blur is because of the cable connections, and the snes graphics are just more zoomed in, making it harder to see in front of you when running around in dungeons.
I prefer the Genesis tbh the sound just better and the difficulty is a bit more forgiving than SNES by the way in 3:23 you guys ignore the lava effect
1.TG-16
2. Genesis (better gameplay)
3. SNES
The sound is much better on the Genesis than the SNES on this one. It's more grindy and doesn't feel like a baby game. They did an amazing job to make the music sounds this awesome on the Genesis. The Genesis footage in your video looks blurry and sounds muffed like hell.. probably outputted with cheap cables. You need to play both version to see and hear for yourself how good of a Genesis port this one is.
Yes! I love the channel but hate their Genesis video capture.
I actually like graphics better on sega overall, minus that one boss fight. Yeah everything is smaller and even less detailed than snes, but the Genesis has much better use of color imo, and certain backgrounds are more interesting, like the lava level. Also, the sound on SNES sounds grainy, while the Genesis at least sounds clean. Overall, I think it's a tie
I think this is one of the cases where they knew how to program sound correctly on the Genesis. Genesis version is better in my opinion, while the game screen size used in the game is smaller, music and gameplay are better all around. Looks like these guys were using a RF cable with the Genesis, If they had a Genesis/Mega Drive that had a Scart cable, it would look a lot better.
@FinalFantasySete. Yeh, i love the channel but it always bugs me how the Genesis video capture looks dark and blurred.
You’re delusional lol ill guve you the lava level but thats it. And even that an be argued that the SNES version is more fitting artistically.
Genesis also has more parallax scrolling.
Best music Nintendo ? no way :)
I swear I think most people prefer the genesis sound on this one guys...
Hilarious review, guys! I always preferred the Genesis music, though. My reason stems from the fact that I picked the Genesis version up in high school when I was learning how to play bass. I liked a lot of slap bass, like Bill Gould, Les Claypool, Flea, and P-Nut, so when I heard the badass slap bass riffs in the Genesis version of Ys III, I fell in love. Any bass players out there listen to Castle Valestine for the Genesis and tell me that isn't a ridiculous thing to try and play! Take it easy
I play bass too. Maybe that's part of why I love a lot of Genesis music and find SNES music to be kinda weedy.
Sorry to hear that. prices aren't cheap here either. we don't use roms so we're limited by the prices of certain games too. glad you enjoyed the vids!
I've marathoned several of these videos now, and I have to ask: What revision of Genesis did you guys record on? I have a feeling it might've been one of worst Model 2 revisions. The music just doesn't sound the way it should, in my opinion.
Pretty sure it looked to be hooked up through RF? That would make it mono sound also.
Dude that OG skit had me busting out laughing at work.
i think the guy has one of the genesis models with bad sound lol
This episode was hilarious!
I enjoy watching your roots my guy.
This is a rough one lol
@@ConsoleWars nah I enjoyed it... but obviously you have grown etc.
The TG-16 one is really the best of the three.
Saxcat I agree.
yep
Try X68000, you won't be disappointed.
Nah the Snes is the best of the three
World of Retro Gameplay Nah disagree
I disagree about the music, for me after playing the game on both systems, the Genesis version had the better music beyond a shadow of a doubt, the SNES arrangements were off key and at times were unpleasant to listen to.
***** indeed, glad to see we're on the same page here. The Genesis version had far and away the better arrangements. If the TurboCD or PSP versions didn't exist, the Genesis version would have the best arrangements.
Максим Ухин Thanks but no thanks **LOL** in many cases the SNES has the better arrangements, but definitely not in this case.
Sega a awful man sound on Sega is boring gameplay tie? wtf gameplay goes to nintendo. Nintendo great man Mario kick ass sonic.
Максим Ухин sorry, I don't smoke pole here thank you very much. Besides, I happen to like both Nintendo and Sega. I've defended the SNES countless times. But in this case, the Genesis had the better sound.
IcedEarthaholic in sega games must do AVGN. And fuck you.
Graphics should've gone to Sega, as they use parallax effects and better usage of fonts (which you totally used as an aspect for Lion King). Hit boxes on SNES are also more difficult to, erm, hit - SNES makes it much harder to progress through the game. Gameplay should've gone to Sega.
Also, you should totally bring back the controller clash aspect to the intro!
Greetings from Portugal.
I had discover your channel recently and it is very creative and clever how do you work together.
I know that the "team" is different know, but the quality is there.
Very good channel.
The best to you all.
Love thegenesis bass
I tell you which version is better, that's the Turbografx CD version!
Yeah, it's a little choppy but the Turbografx CD version has far superior music and graphics! Not to mention the controls are much more responsive and feel just right! The Sega Genesis version is one step back from the Turbo CD in every single way, and the SNES version is two steps back from the Turbo CD, also in every single way...
And the Famicom version is 5 steps back...
+Ruko Michiharu The X68000 version is the best of them all!
Mr_Beezlebub I've never played the X68000 version, but if it's like the same system's version of Ys 1 and 2 then I'm sure it's not the best version...
I've played it, and it really is better. But since most people know about the TurboGrafix16 version, I'd say it is more classic.
+Ruko Michiharu I'd have to think that the graphics from the Turbo Duo version seem toned down in comparison with the Super Famicom version...however, I don't see that much difference, but I CAN tell you that the TD CD version's music BLOWS the MegaDrive and Super Famicom versions out of the freakin' water. In fact, if I start playing guitar again, I want the sheet music to the Demanicus Island track...that is some serious metal.
SickSaiyan Well, let me tell you why I think the graphics of the Turbo CD version are much better than both the Genesis and the Super Nintendo versions:
It has a higher colour count like in the SNES version, and it has a higher resolution, like in the Genesis version, and the choice of colours is better in the Turbo than in both the SNES and Genesis version, in the SNES the colours are washed-out, and in the Genesis there are less colours and a lot more dithering... The only real disadvantage of the Turbo CD in terms of graphics is the choppy scrolling which is very tolerable...
Never heard of this game until I stumbled upon this awesome crazy funny channel?
I much prefer the music from the Genesis version of the game as it not only sounds familiar with the previous (and far superior sound) of the TurboGrafx CD version.
The SNES version which I played after the Sega Genesis version really didn't take much of (if any) benefit of the SPC-700 sound chip in the Super Nintendo version of the game anywhere aside from the American Sammy opening logo that was still hard on the ears.
The Super NES also had to run at a much lower resolution of 256x224 and why the "Ys" logo at the beginning of the game looked rather chunky in comparison of the much higher resolution of the Genesis running at 320x240 which did make things smaller but the extra details such as the background line scrolling in the deep caves that just had a fast tune that also had the benefit from more sound channels. Great times!
The PSP version of the game can be switched to listen to the original FM audio of which many tracks sound like they once did on the Genesis.
No matter how you play the game, it's still a fun romp no matter what you play it on.
+ungibbed It also sounds more like the original PC-88 version, although much enhanced.
+infinitecanadian The Genesis and NEC PC 88 share the same Yamaha sound chip with subtle differences as the PC 88 supports legacy hardware based 8 bit PCM audio channels in addition to the GM hardware to meet the "Multimedia PC" spec of its time.
The Genesis on the other hand must sacrifice sound channels for higher quality PCM audio samples and other sound effects. Since Ys was always known for it's music, the Genesis really was used well in the audio department but if you also notice, Ys III is rather minimal on sound effects on both the Genesis and SNES.
I have the PSP remake of Ys III installed on my Vita and the audio options give you the choice of listening to the original PC 88, X68000, and the modern soundtrack.
Despite the modern 3D graphics and such, listening to the original MIDI soundtrack did give me the vibes of when I had my Genesis ages ago. Still, I can tell them apart due to the Genesis version being slightly remixed to suit the hardware
+ungibbed The PC-88 and the Sega Mega Drive have different (though similar) sound chips. I have to agree that the Super Nintendo version didn't use the sound chip to it's best.
+ungibbed God this resolution nonsense again. Extra background detail has nothing to do with that spec. All it did was make the screen smaller.
+Baigandine L Wow... Talk about being late to the party. Case of OCD perhaps? Being obvious that you lack the ability to understand how important resolution is to these systems and especially the low processor speed of the SNES, most SNES games ran at lower resolutions which is quite noticeable with a good CRT and connection for the cleanest video signal.
With greater resolution also returns sharper details in character sprites and background detail. Wouldn't you prefer better detail and a cleaner looking game? Guess not.
There's also different forms of resolution resolution one being in audio Obviously with a CD having a higher overall resolution than you would get on a cassette tape (if you're old enough to to know what one is and actually were able to compare them. The cleanest at this point is pure optical for surround sound or linear PCM or other digital means via HDMI.
Besides the point, exactly what is it that compelled you to respond to a ten month old comment?
Not only is the Genesis version of Ys III better than the Super Nintendo version, but it's also better than the NEC PC-8801, MSX2, PCECD/TurboCD, Sharp X68000, Famicom, and even PS2 versions!
Anyone notice that the Snes controller is upside down?
King Purcival LOL
Hey, did anyone ever notice in the text scrawl at the beginning of the Genesis version (check out time index 5:05) that it says that the Gypsy woman has long flowing BACK HAIR! I just about shit myself the first time I played this game, I was laughing so hard.
Which console had the better Ys III game? PSP of course. Play The Oath in Felghana.
Oh wait... I'm in the wrong era.
I think if I had to choose between these two I'd go Sega. Closer to the source material. Overall my favorite is PCE/TG16 CD (music is so dope). Even my favorite version has the choppiest scrolling I've ever seen. None of these versions are perfect. Overall I really enjoy this game. Call it a guilty pleasure if you will, but I don't think you can go wrong with any version.
the best show of video games in youtube
No mention of the much more detailed background graphics in the Sega Genesis port? I prefer the SNES version too, but it's obvious where the Super Nintendo port cut corners in order to create those animated cinemas.
Megadrive sounds way better than snes just listen to Redmont town
no way in hell the megadrive version dont sound like the PC 88 version so no its not accurate so snes its the best one
@@Zero-di9mz TurboGrafx-CD wins in sound.
@@jayden6538 Yes of course is based on the original OST turbografx had CD quality music for sure its gonna win
One song doesn't fix the whole game
7:59 - The Super Nintendo gameplay works without buttons at all! :D
Awesome video, Haven't played either version of this game, but am interested now.
New subscriber! You guys make the sort of videos I wish too, I live in Australia and I collect retro games and consoles. Australian Pricing for that sort of stuff is absolutely ridiculous so it makes it pretty hard being young and living at home, But I love doing it :)
man bros. i've been binging on your videos and your intro music is stuck in my mind. also the cheesy acting is epic! haahhaha love your content. thanks for sharing!
I never knew until today that Greg was mentioning OJ Simpson and i been watching them since elementary school and was too young to understand😂2:20
Nintendo: Why don't you talk about your gameplay? That'll cheer you up.
Sega: no it won't...
Nintendo: How about this Vodka-
Sega: Yeah! That'll work. *grabs*
Hard to choose what's my favorite moment from these vids, but that is certainly up there.
Lol i was scrolling through comments during the video and came upon this right as it happened! Haha was that svedka?
I actually like the Sega instrumentation better. Personal preference.
...WHAT?
Listen, i'm a SNES fan, i prefer mostly SNES versions for most games... but...
COME ON, GENESIS VERSION OF YS 3 OWNS THE SNES VERSION!
Genesis version is way closer to the original PC-88 version. The art style in cutscenes is beautiful compared to... freaks in SNES version. And Music is much better in Genesis version.
I definitely agree. The music on the SNES version is a DISGRACE for the console. I know many early SNES and MD/Genesis games had their audio suffer (Look at Super Thunder Blade on MD or RPM Racing on SNES), but wow it's bad.
Best music YS 3 on SNES? This people are FUCKING KIDDING RIGHT?
Of course I read the text. That's what you had to do back then. Also I definitely preferred the genesis music. That town music in the SNES version just seems abysmal to me.
LMAO @ The stuff you guys did while worrying about who would win "Graphics"!
8:55 "SEGA Didn't Lose!" ...Plus, Nintendo does a victory dance for him. WTF?! LOL!
I've never played any of the games in this series. Perhaps I should change that.
how is the turbografx cd version not in here??? (also easily the most superior version of Wanderers from Ys)
3:27 What about those line scroll effects on the Genesis version? That means it's hot. What? Super Nintendo managed to cool of lava and keep it in liquid form? Also, where are the bubbles in the Super Nintendo version?
This sucks! The Super Nintendo version is not better. For one thing, the music sucks ass; the Mega Drive music sounds much better. Who cares if the Super Nintendo version has a few cutscenes? I know which one I should rather play.
your just mad that sega genesis version is pace of shit
crystian barriga
No it ain't.
+infinitecanadian As a Super Nintendo fanboy, I agree that the Genesis version was much much better than the SNES version.
+crystian barriga Don't put your love in the SNES too much in the way of reality. After all the best music on in this game begins and ends after the American Sammy logo
You can also max out your level on the SNES version really really early.
Nice! That OJ joke was the best!!!😂
Genesis version is definitely superior. The SNES version has sloppier controls/hit detection and the Genesis version actually plays a bit nicer.
yeah its weird, for some reason i used to like renting the genesis version, the audio was better on snes but i thought the framerate looked a bit better and smoother on genesis.
People like to say oh, the PC engine cd version was better, yeah, it had the best audio, the best music of all the versions, also had actual voice acting, but damn, the scrolling on it was HORRID.. it was like a slideshow.
WHAT! Never seen the SNES version win a comparison of this game before. Most often TG16 wins with Genesis second.
@@rootykazooty351 Even SNES fanboys should agree that SNES version music sound disgusting.
I mean, compare it to gorgeous music of Super Castlevania IV.
Кейти Тамира I kinda like it, more than the Genesis version, but TG16 CD is how it was meant to be listened.
You chaps drunk? The SEGA version blows the SNES one away.
Imho the snes version is by far the worst version. PCE > Genesis > Nes(famicom) > Snes(sfam)
OH YES! I AGREE!
EVEN NES VERSION IS BETTER THAN SNES ONE! ^__^
Finally someone who has the same opinion as me ^_^
Best 16-bit version? X68000. FACT.
In all seriousness, the Genesis version is clearly derived from the X68000 one while the SNES version is more of its own beast (which might explain the worse gameplay balance).
Eala Dubh The Turbografx-16/PC Engine version is a close second.
That's the same processor my 20 year old calculator uses.
@@worldofretrogameplay6963 I'd say it's the better of the two.
This game gotta have the most nostalgic music ever man i play it as a kid and now im all grow up damn
The genesis versuon is wayyyyy better than the snes but the pc engine version looks the best from what iv seen and heard
Holy shit, that OJ joke was god-like!
In general, I thought Super Nintendo games were brighter and happier while Genesis games were darker and gloomier. Depending on what game it is, one could be better than the other, but in this game, I prefer dark and gloomy, so I prefer the Genesis version. Maybe I'm biased, but I'm sure everyone else is too
this is one i have to disagree with. Genesis is the better version for every reason the S.N.E.S. supposedly is in this episode. i could see this being a tie but i prefer the Genesis of the two
// My God this video needs a redo, later Console Wars videos are worlds better than this.
First off the graphics. Yes the SNES version has more usable screen space due to a larger frame, but the developers did not capitalize on it, basically all they did was stretch everything to fit the new frame size, so everything looks horizontally disformed. As if that's not bad enough, the SNES version missed a lot of the details found in the PC-CD and Genesis versions, it also ran at a lower resolution than the Genesis version (which was even higher than the PC-CD version). And how did these guys not notice how dark everything is on the SNES version? That's blatantly obvious.
Presentation-wise, they're both horrible in comparison to the PC-CD original. The SNES might win because of the animations, but it certainly shouldn't get a cookie for that. The animations are horribly drawn! The Genesis version was static but at least featured better-drawn pictures, really quite boring though.
Now onto the sound... how does the SNES even come close to winning here? It sounds reverby and horrible, even the tracks that he was using to slam the Genesis version... to me it seems like it actually did the opposite and slammed the SNES. The Genesis music definitely made better use of the hardware and puts the SNES version to shame (Although you should all hear the PC/TG-CD soundtrack, it's heaven to the ears
+Gender Neutral Chibi Thing It's so deformed only Sega fanboys can see it!
No way is the Sega ost for this game better than SNES. The Sega version sounds so muffled and muted, while the SNES sounds lively and almost orchestrated. Take the Ilvern Ruins or lava levels for example. Completely different sounding.
@Baigandine. No, you're wrong. I love both consoles but when viewing SNES graphics as intended, in 4:3, they are noticeably stretched. You always see it with circles looking squashed and characters looking like they've been living in McDonalds since the PSX launch date. Nintendo really dropped the ball here.
The frame size is only bigger on SNES because the resolution is lower.
Dave Vil Have you even listened the pc88 soundtrack of this Game? These are the original tracks.
The Mega Drive version souns way close to that one than the Super Nintendo versión. Mainly due the sound chip of the Mega Drive being based on the one of the pc88.
Cool video. Still waiting for a complete Ys compilation.
6:13 to 6:18 Joker Phoenix trailer in nutshell.
Have to agree with you guys, the SNES is the best version. So many great moments in this video. The squeaky SFX when the eye is poked, the vodka bit, great comedic timing on this one. And I was laughing pretty hard at the intro considering my latest delve into the pronunciation. Great work you two!
Thanks dude!
...What? Listen up, have you ever looked at how ORIGINAL PC88 version looks like? You can easily browse it's music on youtube. And compare... does the SNES or Genesis music sound much closer to it? SECOND. SNES version music sounds like garbage and it's a fact. Compare it to gorgeous soundtracks of Super Castlevania IV, Super R-Type and Gradius III (SNES games which came out in the same year as Ys III SNES). How are you even able to praise SNES music of Ys III compared to OTHER SNES GAMES?! Why do Super Castlevania IV music sounds SO GREAT, while Ys III SNES sounds SO BAD? Or you are just biased?! I ORDER YOU TO EXPLAIN YOURSELF!!
And about Ys 1.
How thw better? Nes or Master System?
7:12 yeah Greg, i laughed at that too
turbo duo version is the best
I just re-viewed this, and... Yeah, something was up with the Genesis in this one. The picture is messy and the audio is somehow broken..? Granted, I know you didn't have the best equipment at that time (SNES audio came out a bit noisy as well). Also, worth noting that the picture frame on the SNES probably isn't larger, but just looks so because it's being stretched more.
Developers: "Riot" for the Genesis version, and "Advance Communication" for SNES.
2:28 That face shall haunt my dreams for all eternity. lol
I swear this was one of the hardest games ever for me as a kid. Took years before this game finally clicked.
Pausing the video, 'cause if you're about to say that the SNES gameplay beats the Genesis, you're plain *wrong*. Same menu'ing, but the ability to maneuver around stages easier (and murder the final boss WITHOUT having to constantly swap rings just to do appreciable damage) means the Genesis wins here. (Sound/Graphics are largely speculatory, but you cannot argue with EASE of use, and the Genesis wins out here hands-down.)
Okay, let's see what y'all have to say. ::unpauses::
Oh, you said the gameplay is exactly the same. Huh. 'cause Garland *totally* has the same hit-boxes, that allow you to 1-shot him without taking a hit. Or finding dead-zones in his lightning fields, so you can stab at his knees with impunity. Or -- and, again, it's REALLY frustrating when you realize it from playing the games back-to-back -- THE FINAL BOSS CAN ACTUALLY BE HIT, WITHOUT REQUIRING PRECISE JUMPING AND SLASHING.
Yeah, no, Sega wins this match. You're fully wrong if you vote for the SNES as the winner. I mean, yay, aesthetics? But if you want THOSE, go play the Turbografx version. Otherwise, it goes TG-16 > Genesis > SNES > Famicom > any other version.
The answer is Turbo Duo.
The Genesis sound is very similar to the original x68k version. The soundtrack of which can be heard on the PSP version, which also has the PC88 audio or some reason. I'd rather they use the PC-Engine instead.
First tie in Console Wars! It’s in Gameplay.
As soon as you hear Redmont town on the Genesis its allready over the Snes doesnt stand a chance.
Which platform did ys started anyway?
SNES version's music is the black sheep of the family. The Genesis version sounds similar to the X68000, MSX, and PC-98 versions.
Also, the music in the SNES version sounds awful. Just, btw.
WTF...SNES ver BGM is shit.
Fuck You
***** welcome to the gamer culture. where opinions are set by the hivemind and all who stray from the set path is deemed a cancer...
I also call it Ocarina of Time syndrome... or Final Fantasy VII sickness depending on what console you prefer. But that, ofcourse leads to the console fanboy decease... Then the world explodes by the sheer stupidity of it all.
***** burn heal and all.
I remember this game when it came out I can't believe I beat it without a guide took me a while. That last boss fight was long as hell. I had the super NES version.
Genesis version is always better.
The SNES OST may have been more clear, but compositionally, all of the songs (except Searing Struggle, since that got a whole makeover) sound weaker compared to the Genesis OST. The Genesis OST had more depth and was much more exciting. Just listen to Redmont Town and Be Careful.
It's odd because the SNES version should've been capable of having better sound with its 8 channels and opportunity for outstanding samples, but this game's OST felt like a budget cut compared to the Genesis version, which is the best one in terms of 16-bit sound (otherwise, the TurboGrafx16 would ace it).
Good OJ reference
One of the best episode, funny at hell
Pretty pretty pretty pretty good
日本ではメガドライブのイース3は非常に評価が高いです。
I'm currently playing all the versions of Ys 3 of that time. That is, Ys 3 Turbografx version, SNES version, NES version, and Genesis version.
I'm currently at last at the Genesis version, and it's much more enjoyable than horrendous SNES version. Music quality is DISGUSTING.
Only Biased people who only had this version could praise it. It sounds like Shit. Compare it to the other games of 1991. (Gradius III, Super R-Type and Super Castlevanai IV), which sound way better. Even NES version has better sound quality.
At 8:31 maybe its just me but i dont see any buttons on the SNES controller.
***** Dam I guess the game wasn't hard enough so he had to resort to inverted controls.
Ha, I like the CYE reference... “Pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty good!”
Why does it look like blue light filter is on
isnt that one tune the gametrailers outro ruclips.net/video/BKCrzINznk4/видео.html but sounds bit choir like
That sounds about right.
I had no idea it was even from Metroid.
love this game
This is a Nintendo-biased comparison for sure. You even didn't bother to point out the horrid artwork the SNES version features in all the presentation cutscenes. And the music is much closer to the original source (the Falcom computer versions) in the Mega Drive version rather than in the SNES version.
Redmont town sounds awesome on genesis but totally crap on snes
Its that Sega bass. Sounds tight!
@@ConsoleWars then why you guys compare the SNES and MD one while giving the win for SNES?
It is unwise to pronounce Ys as "wise"
Turbo CD wins... Next!
The music is subjective
