I don’t actually think this is in any way good for the ecosystem. 3000 years is enough time for the ecosystem to change and adapt to not having or wanting the animal present. Introducing them now will probably cause massive decreases in animal populations and possibly extinction of some species. All I can say is good luck but very dumb. I understand people want to repopulate an area with an animal that once lived there but since it no longer does and for 3000 years, by doing it your going to cause more harm than good.
Haris, You have a good point however, If the devils can help decrease the feral animal populations it will be a success. Far too many Native animals are being killed by cats and foxes and hopefully the devils can even that out.

They aren't extinct...they are 'endangered'. They are mainly found in Tasmania, hence the name but also in New Zealand but not on mainland Australia. This is the first time a Tasmanian Devil is born in mainland Australia in 3000 years. They haven't been cloned genetically 👍

Like animal names, they’re Aboriginal words and are very melodic due to having so many vowels.

When I first got chickens I was skeptical they would actually cut down in the pest in my backyard, but they did. They even chased away the cats that were killing my beautiful birds, and now the birds are back and I can finally make their birdhouse gourd homes so they never have to leave

Not trying to be pedantic. But this deliberately misleading title, omitting the qualifier Australia when in fact they have existed continuously in Tasmania, gives one the impression that this is the result of cloning or genetic engineering.
Being fortunate enough to live in Tasmania, and understanding the level of concern here for their long-term survival under this disease, I am very happy indeed that they are being introduced back on to the mainland in an effort to underwrite their survival. Bravo!

Just to clarify, these are the first tassie devils born in the wild on the mainland. Many of our zoos & smaller sanctuaries on the mainland have had breeding programs in place for quite a while (some since 2009) with a lot of success, it’s just that they stay in the zoos for their safety & to secure the ability of the species to continue breeding & thriving without DFTD devastating them or feral animals predating on them.
I will never not find it amusing that something so tiny and adorable can yet be so violent and aggressive towards members of their own species. Apparently they also like to lay out in the sun for hours too, just doing nothing. I love these adorable little creatures. Hope they make a full comeback on Tasmania just like California condors are doing in the US.
