  • Both oils were run for 10 hours. The Motorex is at least double the cost

I have 650 hours on my 2015 KTM 300 and I’ve always ran Shell Rotella T4 in the gear box. The motor and clutch will last a long long long time using the T4 . Don’t use synthetic, use the T4 conventional and change it every 100 to 200 miles depending on your off-road riding situations. Many trophies, and many 100+ mile trail rides on my bike, and she’s been incredibly reliable. As for 50:1 mix I use nothing but Amsoil Saber at 60:1 and my first crank went 550 hours before showing signs of needing replacement. That’s when I replaced the crank and all the main tranny bearings as preventive maintenance. She’s never let me down.

I appreciate the controlled approach to this experiment. My riding buddy's clutch cover gasket started leaking on our last ride, he said he had watched some vids regarding riding with no oil so we pressed on, trying to figure out how much was leaking. He pulled the cover off half way in and sure enough it was broken. Popped it back on and we rode some more before we rode out and by the time we hit the truck it didn't appear to be leaking anymore, nothing left to leak. I took off on vacation right after that so will need to catch up, but the moral of the story is the 300s are pretty rock solid, so if it runs with almost no oil then any oil should be good.

For my 24 300XC-W, I just performed third oil change (~ 10hr intervals) and decided to switch back to T4 after having using Motorex for first two changes. I had used T4 on previous two 4-stroke KTMs with over 300 hours accumulative with no issues, so good to hear that I should expect same positive results with the 2-stroker too.

I used in my 2011(350hrs), 2018 (235 hrs), 2020 (220 hrs) and now my 2024 300 XCW. No problems, no slip. Always did about 8-10 hrs changing intervals. Its cheap. I do the same on an extended ride, Synthetic Amsoil 20/50 I ran for about 35 hrs. A lil long I know but did not experience any issues on a lot of Colorado single track.

+1 for Rotella. I’ve done around 200 hours on my 300s with excellent results. Also, riding McNutt tomorrow if you’re interested.

I started running t4 in my 500 exc. Exellent, no issue. I run t6 full synthetic 5w40 in my cat. They started producing t6 full synthetic in 15w40, i switched my ktm to that. Excellent. No problem at all. Do not run t5 blend. It does not meet the requirements.

Nice! The Rotella is doing it's job with cleaning the engine as is with the Motorex

I run Rotella simply because I can afford to do more maintenance for the cost. It has worked great in everything and it's way cheaper.

That's dark oil for 10 hours, you must spend a lot of time on the clutch. In my 300 i do it at 40 hours and it's still mostly caramel with a small amount of discoloration from clutch debris in the oil that comes out first (bottom of the sump).

I think as long as I change around 10 hours I’ll stick with the over half the cost Rotella. I’ll save this jug of Motorex if I’m doing a longer multi day trip were I go more then 10 hours between changes.

That’s crazy I run 20 hours on my 450 racing motocross before I change the oil and it never gets that bad 😂 and the smokers I do it every 10 and still don’t get that kind of color where you riding it at?
