Interesting idea. I like the idea of channeling the air upwards and the fact that it will work which ever direction the wind is coming from. This would be suitable for mounting on the top of high structures for maximum effect. Small foot print too.

Wouldn't it have been more effective just to face the turbine into the wind? Seems like such a waste having such a big fancy construction and then limiting the air flow to such a small area of the blades.
I think this is brilliant the place to have this is in a area with a lot of turbulence. I am working on a rooftop, we have a lot of wind but because of the saroundings the wind is costly changing directions with huge gusts all time. I would like to know more about this.
The only advantage is it is multidirectional, which is not too much compared to the energy that doesn't catch because of that, if it is put horizontally with a fin it will get more energy out of the air, being multidirectional it is not a great value energy extraction is.
This VAWT can be improved very well for increased power, runtime and versatility. This is a good project.

it's supposed to redirect all the flow over the vertical section of the base, which is larger and also makes the fan fixed
It's a trade-off i think. Less mechanical maintenance for a little less power generation capacity.
