Hi Travis, I really appreciate your donation. I'll give you a shout-out for your generosity in an upcoming blacksmithing video. And feel free to email me with any questions, etc. Big thanks. 😬
Watching how easy you make it look getting both sides so symmetrical just shows the skill level you have achieved! I'm blown away every time I watch your videos! As always, thanks for sharing! 😁👍🏻💪⚒
Hey Steve, Thanks for another donation. I haven't even recognized you for your last donation yet! I'll get that taken care of in my next two blacksmithing videos. My only claim to somewhat fame in the blacksmithing world is tong making. So I need to post some sort of tong every now and again. Really appreciate you going out of your way to contribute. 😬
Watching you make tongs reminds me of watching Willie Mays handle "routine" fly balls in Candlestick Park in my youth. You both make it look so natural!
Thanks I was also going to ask you about the different oils or if you tried any other oil for quenching ? Like baby oil or linseed oil, flax oil ,chia oil just random since you had the Soybean oil episode I was wondering if any comparison of hardness or like you heat up a nails and try one reach oil and see ? It's just an experiment on oil !🤔
Hey GS, what's the thickest stock you make tongs out of, and what size hartty hole 🕳 🤔 do you have there?? We have a idea 💡 and these measurements would be critical to make it! BTW we love the finish that brass brush leaves on your tongs, a real touch of class 👏
I normally use 14mm rounds for my tongs. Sometimes I go smaller to 1/2" or 13mm and rarely I go up to 15mm. My hardy hole is 3/4". I'll do more detailed tong videos where I give measurements, etc. Thanks.
I’ve been lurking for years, great video as always, question about the fuller behind the boss on the reign side, doesn’t this create a hinge point? I’m assuming it allows you to get a wider boss? Thanks
Hi and glad to have you come out of the shadows. You make a good observation. That fuller helps me with spacing / sizing the tong and for defining the pivot area. And the fullers on either side have the small added benefit of allowing the tong to rest better in a rack, depending on how that tong holding rack is made. Thanks for watching / lurking for so long. 😬
Hi Lance, it's tough to say - it really depends on the stock sizes / shapes you're using. But if you're using primarily flat stock, then my blade and farrier flat styles would likely be best. And what I now call my gamut style is best if you plan to use bar stock. Thanks for watching. Glen
Hi Travis, I normally don't make crucible tongs but can maybe help you depending on the size you need. Email me if interested. And thanks so much for your donation. gstongs@gmail.com Glen
I would think a guy would want to make them out of high carbon and harden them, at least the serrations. I made a set of mini tongs to put a heavy spring in a washing machine. I used drill rod, they worked awesome but boy will that foul up a hammer face if worked too cold.
I'm charging $135 for the set of three H13 handled top tools and this includes the standard postal airmail. But I might be able to offer a small discount. If interested, email me: gstongs@gmail.com Thanks. Glen.
Why u never make tongs from some other kind of steel like flat bar. ? 1/2 round is really hard to get a good tong from it very little steel to work with.
For a person who only hand hammers, rounds make more sense since drawing out the handles to a nice round or tapered round shape would take forever otherwise. And I can upset the jaw ends if I need more material. But I do sometimes use other shapes for tongs. Thanks for watching.
Great video but the joint of the tongs, in this style, are the weakest part of the tool. Without drawing out the reigns and creating a nice transition between the joint and handle, you create a weak spot
I mean in a round about way you got to a set of tongs but why all of the extra steps? If you actually forged them the way tongs are suppose to be forged it’s a lot faster and looks a lot better.
Thanks!

Glen, it is my honor to contribute, as you give us so much in return! Keep up the great work, Sir!
I'll do my best brother. Thanks so much.
To my way of thinking, when someone can make their craft look so easy to perform, they are a truly an artisan!!! You are an artisan!!!!!
I really appreciate your kind comment. Thanks for sure and good luck in your own work and all.
Your tong making videos never gets old Glen.
I'm very glad you feel that way since it's the one thing I feel comfortable doing. Thanks for everything. 😬
Watching you make tongs reminds me of watching Willie Mays handle "routine" fly balls in Candlestick Park in my youth. You both make it look so natural!
Hi Bryson, The one thing I feel comfortable making is tongs. Almost all other projects I stumbled and bumble my way through. Thanks. 😬
Awesome break down Glen on the process. Thanks
Hi Brooks and thanks for everything. 😬
Perfect! Bro, u r Malevich of blacksmithing-minimalism in everything-heating, movements...
Thanks for your kind comment.
Nice job as usual, they look like very handy tongs for lots of small jobs. Thanks Glen.
I'm not sure this tong will suit the purpose well. It's hard to size tongs without having a sample of what the person wants to hold. Thanks.
Very kuulio! The procedure. Is mucho mas simpler than some projects involving tong making
🙏🔥⚒️🧙🏼♂️
Hi Crawford, yes, this process may be less complicated than others. But it has some tricks to getting it right. Thanks.
Good job, as usual. Liked the serration tool.
I used to do serrations one by one but this is just easier. Thanks Ron. 😬
Nice job, organised and set out well, good photography and explanations, hat off to you.

Great looking tongs you make it look so easy
Hi Alan, Tongs are my thing and really not much else! Thanks. 😬
Your craftsmanship is of high calibre
Thanks for watching and for your kind comment.
Nice tong Glen, everybody knows they need them to screw the lids on the cans!😁
Maybe my wife could use a tong for opening jar lids. Can't count how many times she hands me a jar to open. Thanks Paul. 😬
Work at the pinnacle of perfection
I appreciate your kind comment. Thanks.
J'adore tous les outils que tu fais ils ont tous quelque chose de spécial.
Hi Adem, A lot of folks prefer tool making videos. And tongs are maybe the only thing i really feel comfortable making. Thanks. 😬
I like your style. With fine hits, nice polish and bronce finish.
Very good.
I make some stuff too
Отличная работа!
Попробую повторить.
Круто! Мастер своего дела, что тут ещё скажешь!

Hi Michael, No problem. If you need anything I make, let me know. 😬

Absalutely fantastic as usual....
Much appreciated Dan.Thanks for everything. 😬
I really like that dog head hammer that is a beauty :)
Hi Darren, I really enjoy that hammer and plan to make another for myself. That steel (YK30) is harder to get these days. Thanks for watching. 😬
Nice tongs. Would have been cool to be able to see them in use. Thanks!
Beautiful work!! 👍

Must have taken years to make things so symmetrical; amazing!
What was the spray at the end? Oil or polyurethane, or something mystical?
The spray is just WD-40 - nothing mystical. 😬Thanks for watching.
Absolutely beautiful work buddy a real inspiration to us backstreet Anvil bashers lol , Greetings from Very wet Wales UK

Всё чётко и очень аккуратно.
Awesome work!
What kind of wheel was on your grinder? Your technique is excellent.
That's a very worn 150 grit flap wheel. Thanks Ben.
@@gstongs Thanks
Another awesome project. Question- I a knife maker making primarily hidden tang japanese chefs knives what tongs would be the best for me?

Have you ever tried to make jar lifting tongs
I've made all sorts of tongs but can't remember making such tongs. Thanks for watching.
Nice tongs. I thought when you said canning tongs you were making “canning tongs” like for jars.
Someone else said the same. It's not a bad idea for another project since my wife is always handing me jars to open. Thanks Jon. 😬
