That simple twist is brilliant, wish I thought of that when I started! Took me at least 3 attempts to get something that worked, ugly as sin but useable enough to make something better! Most beginner smiths try tongs first, silly but if you have none its the first thing you need!
steel parts you don't want heating up while in the forge, use a tool to brush water over the surface. In japanese blacksmithing a "tebori" is used, its a strongly compressed bundle of straw that's been soaked in water. or use a ladle
You just earned a sub! The violin sounds, the last 3 seconds of the vid, your 'ugly' tongs are genius, and the fact you use a bolt as a rivet (me too!). Top quality stuff!
Excellent work, thanks for posting. I've gone back to this video a few times now during my own attempts to make tongs. This is probably the best tong making explanation video I've found.
Those “ugly” tongs are great… low maintenance, no fussing, work great, don’t talk back to you. It’s the “pretty” tongs you need to watch out for... always needing oil, high maintenance, “keep the rust off me”, always bitching. Oh, sorry, we were talking about tongs - got carried away. Great work! Love the spartan forge area. How heavy is your anvil? I love the dull thud when you hammer on it, sounds dense and heavy. Thanks for sharing the video. You do really good work (that I can mimic when I get my forge set up someday 🙂)
Ollari's Thanks for the reply! Anvils are damn expensive here in the USA. I’ve been searching for an affordable one for years, but no luck. I was given a piece of railroad track (from my awesome neighbor who’s a welder) that’s about 40 kilos (80 lbs or so), but I still need to form it into an anvil. It’ll have to do for now. Thanks for sharing your videos, I find them very informative & funny!
Yeah, same here! They ask for 3-5$ / kg . I’ve been searching for the past couple of years for something like this. Railroad tracks are nice and affordable especially with that weight what you have!
Vice grips are good. Just take them on and off the metal. Also, you can put a wet rag on the metal sticking out of the forge to keep it from getting too hot. They turned out great, nice work Seb!
Joe Makes you said it! I have seen weirder & uglier hand made tools. Function is key but form is always nice too! You got it goin Sebastian! & violin saw nice touch!
Nice work buddy, two ways to make tongs. (Ugly or not they did the job) good to see you at MC again, just wish we had more time to chat. Take care. 👊👊👊
Awesome job! But most blacksmiths leave the stock a little longer and don’t cut it to size until the very end, so that way they don’t need to hold the piece they are working on with tongs hehe or you can simply weld a rod to the end of it to use a handle and not burn your hand, and then cut it off when you are done forging ;) but your final product is beautiful. Keep up making great things. And love your forge btw.
Dude, nice simple vid. Two questions. What was in the jar at the end that you used to treat the tings and can you give me a closer look at your multi-tool sheath please
The old blacksmithing dilemma: to make tongs, you gotta first make tong-making tongs
The idea to adjust the tongs when they were conected is just brilliant!!!
The "ugly" tongs to hold the main tongs are just as awesome, in my opinion, haha! Great stuff
Haha! thanks! They are just good enough to get the job done.
Loved the hacksaw part!
The basic tongs you bullshitted together we’re absolutely brilliant. Ugly maybe but beautif in the simplicity.
*Needs tongs to hold tongs. Looks at vice grips holding the bottom tool. Makes different tongs.*
Love it.
Hahahaha! 😅🤣😂
Thank you! For some reason this tutorial made sense to me when the other videos didn’t.
I like your sincere honest approach to smithing. You had a problem, so created a solution. Excellent video.
Those temporary tongs are great imo! The grinder noises when drilling cracked me up!

I like what this guy’s about and I like choice of tools.
Great video, thanks! After my forge is finished and i got some practice this will me my first project!
These came out great! And you editing style really is something else. Keep up the great work!
Thanks a lot Man!
Végre egy élvezhető magyar kovácsolással kapcsolatos videó! Szerintem király. Kíváncsian várom következő munkáidat!
Köszi szépen Zsolt!

To be fair, both sets of tongs look quality enough to use. Great video
Thanks James!
A nice quiet anvil! Some videos have setups sounding like a church bell being struck with each hammer blow.
Nice job mate thanks for showing us how you made them , Greetings from Wales UK .
Es excelente, extraordinario ver lo que realizas. Gracias por compartir tu conocimiento.
Hahaha the transition from saw to anglegrinder was nice. Had to rewind and watch it again. Well done
it is nice to see the block out of your previous video. Agian another great video with the crazy sounds end i love the effect on 2:35.
Thank you very much Chris!
@@Ollaris You are welcome my friend!

Thank you very much Larry! Thanks for your support!
Had the exact same problem making my first pair of tongues, had nothing to hold em good but now I'm killing it 👍good video
“How to Make 2 pairs of tongs”.
But what about the tongs to hold the tongs to hold the tongs? 😂😂
Actually there were no tongs used to make the tongs which then were used to hold the tongs. 🤣😂😅😅😅 #tonginception

Oh man i love your content wish It could be more often but i guess quality vs quantity
Thank you very much! I’m working on something in the background, so sadly I can’t put out that amount of videos.
So, you making a tong to make a tong? That's great idea

Thank you very much! Hahahaha! Good one.
The anvil is about 75kg , but it’s bolted down really well which helps reduce the ringing.

Might have to give this a go once I've got my forge up and running!
It is a lot of fun! Great beginner project but also challenging enough to learn something along the way.
Great video. I must say you have one super anvil and the violin playing was good stuff.
I would love to start forging steel thing like you have.
I look forward to your future projects
Thank you very much Clint!
Well done my friend!!
Thank you very much!
I learned quickly that it’s important to have a backup set. Forging tongs without tongs is not easy.
Sweet awesome nice work, Seb ! Glad you started forging !
Thanks Remy! So far i love it!
Nice presto changeo with the cutters.

Very good job 👍
Thank you
brilliant
Thanks
I do not care for twisted bit tongs. BUT yours are AWESOME!
Thank you!
Great video. Do you have video on how you make your forge and burners?
I know this is a couple years old.. but what was the goo in the jar you wiped on after it was done? petroleum jelly or lard are my only guesses..
It was homemade paste wax.
Seus vídeos melhoraram muito na edição! Muito bom cara
Nice!
Is it bee-waks you put on in the end?
Yes
ficou show de bola , parabéns.
Great work mate! You'll have to come over to The Forge some time for a play!!
