First Motion Picture Ever Made

- By definition, a motion picture is a series of pictures, projected onto a screen, creating the illusion of movement.
By the 1800's humans had discovered photography, projection and motion. We just hadn't put them together.
Then, in 1878 a guy called Edward Muybridge changed everything.
He set up 24 cameras linked to tripwires to take photographs of a horse galloping.
He developed and later projected the images onto a screen using his invention, the zoopraxiscope.
The result was 2 seconds of movie history.
Here it is, the first motion picture ever made.

Has a bit of pacing issues throughout, but the character development, acting, and stunning special effects make this horse ride a true gallop.
9.7/10, it has a little something for everyone.
It was made over 100 years ago mate…
@@theinfiniteuniverse9874 It appears you missed the joke

Lmao I’m dead
What do you think a video is?
I could be misremembering my history, but didn't Muybridge do this to settle a bet that horses have all four legs off the ground when they run?
MonsieurJimjams Your memory is spot on, although it might just be a legend as there aren't any first hand reports of it.
Yestervid I thought I heard that too
Stop 0.50 exactly and you will see that he was right 😆
Lmao
Leland Stanford made a bet and asked Muybridge to photograph it
It's a bit light on plot, but still better than many of today's scripts.
Later, one of the first actual movies, filmed on a motion picture camera was a train locomotive headed straight for the camera. It allegedly scared people so bad that some of them had heart attacks.
@@tirebiter4009 someone told me that but im not sure how accurate that is.
We take advantage of the fact that we have movies and films that entertain and tantalize our senses. People back then couldn't have ever thought that a motion picture could even be possible until this was created. I saw this motion picture with the same awe and wonder they perhaps viewed it with so long ago.....
I was playing red dead redemption 2 and watched a movie in valentine, and it got me googling when projectors and cameras were made. And then I ended up here
I think the horse played professionally. It must have played other roles too before that. Especially, it had a super tail control during the whole movie. Thanks to the horse's parents👍👍👍👍
If this is the first "movie" ever made, wouldn't this be the most influential piece of film or video of all time? This basically paved the way for cinema, film, stop motion and special effects.
I mean im just gonna chuck it out here the man on the horse was a black man so possibly race could've been one of the factors
It’s not that’s why
@@oot2380 The photos of the black man on the horse are probably from 1887. I'm very curious to see how this claim from Jordan Peele's NOPE trailer is debated!

Who’s here from the NOPE trailer ?
I wish I could go back in time and show people something like Armageddon…or an MCU film or something and tell them this is their future
That’s a black man riding the horse! No mention of him? I just saw “Nope” lol
Also no mention that this isn’t even the first film ever made. It’s Passage de Venus in 1874
@@El_Santo_De_CeroteTrue but I think the first actual film would be Roundhay Garden Scene (1888) as these are just stop motion and not actual film. Although i’m not sure if stop motion could be classified as film or not.
Who is here after the NOPE trailer lol.
By motion they mean the first image that can move?
Lol, it takes longer to make popcorn!
Bunny Honey it takes longer to get the popcorn out of the bag
NOPE
Congratulations on the video, thank you !!!! It was very exciting for me to see it because it is like "time travel" without leaving the house !!!! Thank you!!!!
a big thank you from all of us Eadweard Muybridge
Wait I thought it was a black man and a stick figure
Many think about that but because the footage was only black and white and it was the first version of a recordin the quality was very bad.
I'm here from nope.
Me too
Damn it's true, I came here after seeing the trailer of NOPE
You guest it, Nope brought me here.
Who else is here after watching 'NOPE'?? 🤔
Our only hope is that we never lose sight of one thing is that it was all started by a horse
The world's earliest surviving motion-picture film, showing actual consecutive action is called Roundhay Garden Scene. It's a short film directed by French inventor Louis Le Prince
This was the outcome of a bet. Muybridge got into a discussion one day with some friends who wondered if a horse's four feet were ever off the ground at once while galloping. This film proved that yes there are moments during a gallop that a horse's feet are off the ground at once.
We discovered photography? Or did we invent it?
0.41 my popcorn isn't ready 🤣
Any info on who the rider was?
It's unknown. Some evidence suggests that it was an Ohio farmer named Gilbert Domm, and clearer images (plate 626) show a black jockey whereas Domm was white. I am curious to who exactly is the rider, as well.
people in this time:meh
people in their time:WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW!!!!!!!!!!!!
thanks for that!! I needed this for a school project!! ;)
I wonder if this was a flip book
he just told you how he did it
Still, better than some of the recent Star Wars movies!
Where's the original? The original was motion pictures of a jockey. This looks like it was sketched, or a drawing of someone on a horse in motion.
Here it is:

It was. Muybridge had an artist paint them onto the disk. He didn't have them printed onto the glass until the next decade.
"Nope" Trailer brought me here
Thought this was an ad at the beginning
The cup reminds me of the work of Eadweard Muybridge who produced early moving images of a horse in 1887. The cup is brilliantly clever, but maybe not intended for everyday use. Personally, I'd put it on display somewhere prominent as a conversation piece and to demonstrate that I'm a man of discriminating taste...
Nope brought me here.
Why did they only credit the horse and not the rider!? They were literally the first movie star in the world!
because the rider was a black man
@@nyreedior2825 I know, but what a sad start to our country. Land of the free, right? We're all people trying to live, thrive, love and endure. This racist crap needs to end. I'm atleast 8 different races myself. Humanity needs to be rediscovered, catered to and loved to ultimately achieve the best global future.
If you think about it then, all forms of film are animation. Especially in the old days
Can't wait until this comes to theaters
Nope this weekend
The first moving film was shot on Leeds bridge by Louis le prince
The passing of the Venus in front of the sun is older (1874)
Nope
I feel like this method of stringing cameras together inspired the bullet time method
I got the horses in the back. Horse tack is attached.

This was cutting edge technology back in its day (1888).
Wow!!!! So genius
This was the longest "two second" film I ever saw. Maybe time was shorter back then?
10/10 MOVIE.
yep
What was it that was used to capture a motion picture in a million pictures?
I agree
I never noticed there was a rider till nope... Interesting. Focus was hooves in the air or in contact with the ground.
he set up 12 cameras* not 24
Well now I’ve seen a movie from 1902 and a video from 1878
10 out of 10 best movie ever
I have so many questions
I was invited to the premiere of this film when it came out. I got autographs from some of the actors and the director also. It was a grand party. We all got high and merry... This film was a major box office success back then and money was flowing like water. Good times!
OMG SO AMAZING ITS A WORK OF ART - New York Times 1888
That's not the first motion picture. The first one is "Roundhay Garden" and it lasts two seconds, but it stil is a motion picture.
No, this WAS the first, "Roundhay Garden" was second, but considered the first due to it having actual scenery, and not just a blank wal
This movie, _Sallie Gardner at a Gallop_, is from 1878. The _Roundhay Garden Scene_ was made 10 years later in 1888.
This is a proto type to the first film. others include The Kiss 1872 and Passage de Venus 1874.
Lina that was made in 1888 this was made in 1879
you are wrong. this was the first.
Yestervid your loko
I don't think that imagery was actual photography, it looked like silhouettes from a zoetrope. Very confused here. The first recorded movie, as far as I know was the "Roundhay garden scene" as well as one of Thomas Edisons assistants sneezing on film . Could be wrong but don't think so
Looks animated
that makes sense. Thank you jack!:)
My type of movie 🍿
Seed of cinema
I thought the first motion picture was Louis Le Prince's Roundhay Garden scene in 1888.
it was but he disappeared and was quite frankly forgotten which is so unbelievably sad
A lot of sources say it was 12 cameras, even on the pictures themselves, the numbers go up to 12. Where did you get 24 from?
good video, thank you bro. God bless you. 😊🔥
Excuse me! sir Can i take a clip of your this video for just 8 sec??
This not true,

no
How do I spell this thing?

Why not have the actual motion picture of the Black horse Jockey 🤔
You should try 8-15min videos on these topics if you have the stomach for research. Good vids but so short
Fyi the rider was a black man 🤎
no shit we all saw the nope movie
Wait, Louise le Prince was the first to make a moving picture, but he disappeared before he could show it
No, technically that was Joseph Plateau with his phenakistoscope.
Le Prince was the first to shoot on film, these were glass plates.
Wonder what the resolution of that was out of curiosity
These are hand painted, so that isn't really something that can be answered.
Why 24 cameras? How he decided to have 24 camera
Cool the first film is from 1888
Does anyone know if that horse died??
Great !
still better than my animations
