Adapted by Maximianno Cobra, from Shakespeare's "Timon of Athens", the film exposes the timeless challenge of social hypocrisy, disillusion and annihilation against the poetics of friendship, love, and beauty.
Michael Caine's acting is better than all the others.. I I love Christopher Plummer otherwise.. And, Robert Shaw is so young! "We're gonna need a bigger boat!" LOL
RIP Robert Shaw (August 9, 1927 - August 28, 1978), aged 51 And RIP Christopher Plummer (December 13, 1929 - February 5, 2021), aged 91 You both will be remembered as legends.
I am a lifelong lover of Hamlet. I watched this movie in English Honors in 1969, and I became hooked. Plummer was excellent. Thank you so much for this video, I enjoyed seeing it again after all these years.
I've always dug Plummer but he as Hamlet for The RSC gives me even more respect for him. Cain as Horatio and Sutherland as Fortinbras makes this version an even greater treat.
This is the Battle of Britain version of Hamlet: Plummer, Shaw and Caine all played RAF squadron leaders in the B of B film. Shaw stole the show as a group captain modelled on South African ace Sailor Malan.
Shaw and Plummer also acted in "The royal hunt of the sun". When l remember Shaw l often think of "Jaws", not Shakespeare. Oh boy was l surprised to see this great performance! Hats off!
Without some cuts Hamlet runs about 4 hours and 10-20 minutes long. I saw it at 10 years of age at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. I didn’t know at the time what a rare treat it was to see the whole play. This was back in the days when the Festival had no intermissions -very tough for me, but worth it
Thank you for posting this version of Hamlet! I have only watched 10 minutes so far but am 'hooked.' Because it is such a better directing job than Gielgud's direction of Hamlet, on Broadway, also in 1964!!. Phillip Saville, the director, must have said in '64, "We can produce a better Hamlet than Gielgud with one hand tied behind our backs," and by god he's done it. I couldn't get through watching the entire B&W, gaunt and slow Gielgud Hamlet-version; it was just far too boring, even with Richard Burton....................... Thank You!

Our pleasure! Cheers!
This is a great performance by Christopher Plummer.
Robert Shaw is goddamn perfect as Claudius. I think he’s my favorite.

For some reason when I get really, REALLY depressed, I watch Hamlet. Searched YT this time for a new version. Was not disappointed.

Christopher Plummer and Don Sutherland, two of my faves
A young Christopher Plummer, heavens!
What a treasure. Beyond priceless now.

Rest In Peace Donald Sutherland
Robert shaw tends to dominate every scene he is in!
What a voice - goes straight to the back of the stalls. Great to hear these lines from him, so clear and so well delivered.
@@1977ajax He looks like Christian Bale here.
R.I.P. Donald Sutherland.
Maestro Christopher Plummer🎉
WOW what a cast.
Plummer has the wit for the role. Nearly three hours long and they still had to cut lines for time.

Wow. Just wow. This is fast becoming my favorite.
Thank you for uploading this!!!!
Powerful. Loved it.
I've heard the quotes but have never read or seen anything so a big thanks!
You are very welcome! Cheers!
I love this ❤
Wonderful version.
Roy Kinnear as the gravedigger... nice.
More immersive
Than Burton x

To see your father one more time....
I love when they make Horatio sufficiently Hamletsexual.
Not too frivolous, now. The most personal portrayal ever devised.
Only Smoktunovskii...
