    I'm subscribed to your channel. I recently retired and I need to exercise. I go in the morning to unused city racquetball court and for an hour I hit the pickleball against the wall to learn the nuance of the return; the timing, the bounce of the ball, the force required to effect the desired return...those basic elements. After 20 mins I'm sweating. I take a break; sip my ensure and get back to it. I Love it. This week I bought 2 extra canisters of balls so I can study my serve. This particular video was very helpful for my current learning level. Thanks.

      Your toss serve is illegal, watch it in slow mo upon contact the top of your paddle is even with or above your wrist. This is common with almost all former tennis players because it is taught that way what I call the tennis roll to create top spin. It comes naturally with almost all returns in tennis.
      Solution change the rules to the drop serve exclusively.

    I really appreciate the baseball pitcher analogy. As someone who played baseball for 27 years and is just recently getting seriously into pickleball, that example really clicked for me. I was a pitcher in college and for most of my playing career, and I've been trying a lot of different things to improve my serve, but I really think using similar mechanics to pitching may be what will be most comfortable for me. Thank you very much for the tips.

    If you can believe it I'm a legit 4.5 with a raquetball (not tennis background). My serve isn't as good as most 3.0 players (i've got major yips). Between this video and your third shot drop training video (Low, Loose, Lift and paddle out front) I firmly believe I can get to the next level. I cannot stress how appreciative of you and your videos that I am. Your teaching delivery is wonderful, just wonderful.

    This is really good...
    almost EXACTLY how i coach serves to new players..
    don't forget to have them "speed up" with their stroke... sometimes they get to busy tryin to "aim" and not have the ball go out....
    I say forget that, SWING and HIT the ball and it'll go in....
    Nice video, good work....

    Hey Kyle, great video. I try to help new beginners and I want to do it right so your videos help a great deal. I see an uncanny amount of the time when we are all playing that if the server calls the serve while serving they miss the serve a ton, as you said they just aren't completely focused on the serve. I would add into your video to teach the "routine" as you outline it but also add in to be sure to take a breath, say the score and only after that begin your serve service. thanks again!

To help, I didn't see you mention 3 main points of the volley serve - the upward swing; point of contact below the waist aka belly button; top of paddle below the wrist at point of contact. At least until the next changes arrive. Keep up the good teachings!

      The reference to the navel was removed from pickleball rules several years ago. They changed it to "waist" but don't clearly define that term.
      Of the three, that is the one I have never heard a referee call for a fault.
      If you comply with the other two requirements, upward motion and no part of the paddle head (face) above your wrist (when the paddle contacts the ball), hitting the ball a few inches higher than your waist doesn't give you any advantage.

    Watch old videos of Sharapova before she served. It was always "tuck, tuck, bounce, bounce", where she would tuck her hair behind one ear and then the other, and then do two deliberate bounces. Or watch college softball pitchers. Almost all of them have a routine down pat prior to a pitch! Routines are such a great way of getting into that right headspace :)

    Excellent video, as always! Question: Is there any *objective* advantage to using the volley (toss) serve vs. the drop serve? It seems like the swing path and strike point are almost exactly the same between the two. I've been playing almost a year now and when I first started, I couldn't get the hang of the volley serve so I learned to drop. I can serve with pace and placement and even mix things up between topspin and slice. Yet most of the people I play who are at my level or better do NOT use the drop. I just wonder if I'm missing something if I want to get to 4.5 or 5.0 and beyond?

    • @joemarshall4226
      @joemarshall4226 Год назад +3

      I have had a lot of success with a drop forehand SLICE serve. I use this shot a lot in tennis, so I have the feel of it. If the wind is behind me, the opponent is in trouble if it goes deep, and if the wind is in my face, he's in trouble if my serve is short! I mix in 3 or 4 other serves, sidespin, a combination of slice and side, and topspin. They all help. It's like pitching

    • @thatpickleballguy
      @thatpickleballguy  Год назад +3

      It's a valid question. In my opinion, you can be dangerous with both. I'd experiment more for yourself with the volley (toss) serve and see. I feel like I can generate a bit more whip and topspin by not using the drop serve. But remember, if you're hitting it consistently with depth each time, doesn't matter which type you're using. That's the principle that creates the most success!

      Standing in the middle while serving in doubles is pretty standard. If you're playing singles, i suggest standing closer to the center so you're ready for their return to be hit either way!

      @@philippeacock4729 You cannot toss the ball up or throw it down with a "drop" serve. You can only open your hand and drop it. The reason is, that up or down motion would cause the ball to bounce higher (possibly above your waist) and give you a big advantage since the 3 volley serve rules do not apply.
      With a volley serve, you can toss the ball up but the 3 volley serve rules apply. You can toss the ball 20 feet in the air if you wish but you can't hit it until the ball drops at or below your waist.

    Love your videos and i always share. The volley serve instructions however i totally disagree with unless the newbie comes from a tennis background able to do a successful tennis serve.
    The newbie player without skill will struggle getting the serve in if I taught them your feet positioning. I teach learn to play and the majority would not have the mental ability to do the body rotation before hitting the ball.
    Excellent video for those moving to the next level of improving your serve but not learning how to serve for those new to pickleball.

    Our local club has some disagreement about tossing the ball up on a volley serve. While some agree with you that because 4.A.7 does not address the toss serve that it is legal. Others contend that 4.A.5 prohibits "MANIPULATING" the ball on ANY serve and that a "toss" is a form of manipulation.

    • @thatpickleballguy
      @thatpickleballguy  Год назад

      Thats fair. But the truth is, in my opinion it doesnt really matter that much. The manipulation rule was put into place to prevent spin serves that kick hard when they hit the ground.

    • @TheKiplarsen
      @TheKiplarsen Год назад +2

      We asked USA Pickleball about this seeming discrepancy and here is their reply I just received:
      It seems like those same folks may be overlooking the rule language that says some natural rotation is expected when releasing that ball. Here is the rule itself:
      "4.A.5. The serve shall be made with only one hand releasing the ball. While some natural rotation of the ball is expected during any release of the ball from the hand, the server shall not impart manipulation or spin on the ball with any part of the body immediately prior to the serve."
      You can certainly toss the ball up on the volley serve, as long as unnatural spin is not imparted during the toss. That is certainly a judgement call for the referees or the opponents if a non-officiated match. But, if the opponent thinks there was some added manipulation, beyond that that which occurs naturally, then it's a replay.

      It would cause less confusion if they would change the wording from "the server shall not impart manipulation or spin on the ball with any part of the body" to "the server shall not impart spin on the ball"
      Other than a spin, what "manipulation" are they referring to???
      Also, the rule clearly states only one hand can release the ball so what other parts of the body are they talking about???

      I don't stand still and serve. I begin every serve by calling the score and then advance toward the baseline in one fluid motion, rotating my torso as my paddle contacts the ball.
      My opponent was a pickleball coach recently and he said one of my serves was not legal because I called the score with one foot outside the extended centerline then advanced toward the baseline (well within the extended sideline and centerline and behind the baseline) and hit the ball.
      The rule states:
      4A.4… The moment the ball is served…4A4c neither of the server’s feet may touch the playing surface outside the imaginary extension of the sideline or centerline.
      In my opinion, "The moment the ball is served" is the same thing as saying "The moment the paddle contacts the ball"
      I asked another coach who agreed with my interpretation of the serving rules.

I overheard our opponent say, "Winning points on serves is not the way to win points, play the game." Is serving hard a breach of etiquette? I want to continue playing in this space. I ask for Kyle and community advice. Thanks, JM

      Oo yeah good question. I've had that happen too. After you miss some, peopl tend to question their ability in their shot.
      One of the quickest ways to get it back is to.
      1. go out and drill your serve. Hit about 100 and think about your technique as you do it.
      2. Take some pace off it and focus on consistency.
      See how that works!
