- Get your popcorn ready for the match of the century!!!
Ilie Nastase vs. German Han Jurgen Pohmann.
The match in which Nastase lost his head.
To find out who won, watch the video.
A huuuge thank you for sharing that match that I didn't know. Pure gold. Today, Nastase would have been disqualified I don't know how many times for everything he's done and said 😅😂 For info, it's the second round of the 1976 US OPEN.
Today, Nastase would have been arrested
Thank you for the input.
Gold, absolute gold. What a find this is.
OMG. The power of the pros today makes this match look like it's in slow motion.
Totally different equipment. They couldn't play at today's pace with those old wooden racquets with the small faces.
I looked for a match between Borg and Nastase to see the difference and even played with wooden rackets the speed is much higher than in this match.....so I guess it is about how strong the opponent hits....
just the same words Nastase used
Schaut euch mal das Fußball-WM-Finale 1974 in München Deutschland - Niederlande an. Auch da ein gewaltiger Unterschied zu heute was Athletik und Tempo betrifft.
Thumbs up. Thanks for posting these videos from the past. For me, the tennis of the wood racquet era is much more fun to watch than today's tennis.
for sure
Hell no.
The video clarity is amazing! Thanks for sending this.
Great stuff, thank you guys so much for uploading this spectacular match!!!
Been waiting decades to see this. Thank you!!
Finally we are seeing some classic tennis matches
Ty for upload😊
Wonderful images! Thanks so mutch
what a match...amazing. After the match point what a great scene.
Even the referee dont give him a handshake.
Er hätte ihn vorher aber längst disqualifizieren müssen...Das wäre wohl aber damals mit einer Majestäts-Beleidigung gleich zu setzen gewesen... schade, Nastase hätte es verdient gehabt !
Wow. Prime Nastase made McEnroe & Connors look like angels!!😳
😅
Vielleicht ist der Rumäne ( damals Top 5 in der Welt ) einfach nur ein arroganter "son of a bitch". Das fluchte er gleich mehrfach in Richtung Stuhl-Schiedsrichter.
"Nastase is still upset about . . . what, we don't know. We just don't know."
Bro Pohmann looks like Klaus Kinski 😆
Love how Pohmann kept faking his injury to recover each time 😅
This doesn't just look like an earlier time, it looks like a different planet!
Even so they were professional players, one of them was a solid middle order player the other was ranked 1 in the world, won grand slams and 64 tournament wins.
Plane you mean…the earth is not a spherical planet…it is a flat plane…freemasons and nasa lying to us. Praise Jesus
Vielleicht war es auf einem anderen Planeten ? Wer weiß das schon ?
Amazing quality, can actually see the ball. Always loved Nastase.
Umpire lost control of the game completely…like the OJ Simpson trial judge…got completely rick rolled…nastase should have been thrown out for firing tennis balls at people wtf?
Thank you very much for this great upload. I have been searching for this match for a long time.
You're welcome
A gem. Thank you 😅😅
Very good quality image. What a talent and great touch the tennis players of that era sported. Thank you for posting.
This would be a social media sensation if this happened today. It would go viral.
He would’ve been disqualified in today’s game
@@ManInBlack1988 I wonder if it's because of this match that the code of conduct rules became more enforceable.
@@SyncopateTheShot that was actually after Nasty vs Mac in 1979, with even worse tantrums, players fighting with umpire and crowd invading the court, among many other things. They say professional tennis rules of conduct were born after that.
@@christophflaskamp5579 It wasn't so much that Nasty and Mac threw tantrums at the Open in 1979. Nasty initially complained about a time violation, and the umpire took a point away. At this point, the crowd got involved, and Nasty and Mac just sat back and watched it all happen. Nasty didn't swear or do anything that night like he did in this match.
Pohmann hits his backhand like Harold Solomon
Exactly, like Dibbs and Solomon
@@hcproductsferrara6349 Yes, Eddie and Harold so similar in style (and physique) I get them mixed up
Yes he really does! At that time Borg had by far the most fluid and effective 2-handed topspin backhand of the baseliners.
The forehand is very unorthodox, to put it euphemistically. But the backhand does remind me of Solomon's.
LOL
Nastase was a bigger wind up merchant with the crowds than Djokovic could ever be. 😂"You call me Mr Nastase". There's a reason why he was nicknamed Nasty. Nastase giving the middle fingers to the crowd when he was down match point. 🤣
Sad that on the one occasion Nastase was totally right getting angry, he did not get justice. When Pohman was treated for his injury, he should have left the court and conceded the game. It was always the rule that you can not be treated or ask injury time during the game, only in the pause between the uneven games. ‘Play must be continuous’. The umpire made a mistake by not calling the game for Nastase two times.
What goes around comes around for the Romanian
Of course. Its remarkable though that nor the commentators nor The NY Times the next day (I looked it up) picked up on the breach of the rules. Arthur Ashe (who just happened not to be in the booth that day) did, albeit years later.
Nasty should have been defaulted like 7 times in this match.
@jeromeinen7912 the dude was firing balls into the photographers. Shut up.
This rule with injury treatment only being possible at changeovers was in effect back then. This has changed about 25 years ago. Nowadays you can be treated whenever you want, also during a service game without any punishment or losing a point. For instance Stefan Edberg was treated during his last official match at the Davis Cup final 1996 against Frenchman Pioline, also while the service game was still in progress.
Nastase would not end the match those days. And never saw Pohmann play, thanks.
I’d like to see more
Orantes/ Vilas
Connors / panatta
Nastase / McEnroe
@@rrfamig Borg, Guerulaitis, Ashe, Bertolucci, Tanner, Fibak, Newcombe
This match reminds me of the famous Marat Safin quote when playing Fabrice Santoro: "Being told I would play Santoro was being told I was to die."
Pohman is foot faulting consistently near the end of the match.
Clearly
the photographer in yellow is 17yr German Paul Zimmer. he is still doing photography today at grand slams. amazing upload..
Nsstase was the "bad boy" tennis trend setter. He was very entertaining.
I was surprised because I know H-J. Pohmann as a TV-Commentator from several Boris Becker Matches, when I startet with Tennis and play till today. I thought that I know a lot of Tennis, but the hole Time I didnt´t know, that Pohmann also was a Tennisplayer in that League. Thank you for this video !
Yes, I think as a tennis commentator Pohmann Was rather weak. He had expertise in tennis, but he was not a good presenter or explainer. But that is just my opinion.
@@MultiStar83
Unlike in the match against Nastase, he appeared very distinguished as a TV commentator, even dispassionately trying to be objective.
Awesome. Thanks
Tennis was forced to clean-up its act after this match .... Historic
Did they have any rules at all back then?
I had heard about this match, read about it in the old world tennis magazine but to finally see it, man Nastase was out of control! Crazy 😜
totally
Pohmann the Showman!
Amazing clip. Thank you
Thank you too!
What a Thriller !
Nastase was completely disconnected from tennis by that time. After Wimbledon 1976 he had no interest at all for the circuit, but curiously enough, when he played an invitational with big prize money, he rejuvenated. Then he was very professional for his sponsors and televisions and all that stuff, he was once at the top of the rankings and then monetized everything, his bad behaviour on court and his night life gave him more money and popularity. If you look at the video, furious as he was, he didn't forget to give the german shoes box to someone in the crowd
I was 12 when I started to play tennis.......my first tennis racket was Lion wooden racket.....it cost 129 czechoslovakian crowns. Quite expensive at that time.....people used to earn about 1500 kčs per month and tennis ball cost 32 kčs. So we played with the tennis balls until there was not even 1 fabric on it...😂😂😂😂
This is brilliant. Năstase should have been defaulted for trying to hit the photographer, swearing and hitting the ball at the umpire. Pohmann should have had MTOs or time violations or both. They were both footfaulting on centre serve. The umpire should have played a let. And I never heard Pat Summerall enjoy himself so much.
looks like angus young brother from ACDC , he also stole his limping leg move😅😅
really?
😂😂😂😂😂. That’s a good one. Best comment on here. Hardly anyone will understand what your saying but that is the reason why it’s such a good comment.
The reason Nastase could do whatever he wanted is because there were no rules against any of that back then. Nobody had ever acted like that, so there were no rules. They didn’t know what to do with him. One time they defaulted him and the supervisor came and changed the chair umpire instead! It was after him, Connors, and McEnroe that rules and penalties started to be created and imposed.
FANTASTIC : It was a tuna fishery!!! Savage!!!
wow. f-ing awesome.
The Doctor is only making it worse LOL
That's not the boring ATP tour with thé Board, organisation non catolic. That's life.
Sure, but Nastase whining all the times about the rules while breaking them left and right. Like the guy running for president to stay out of jail
Remarkable perfomance 😮👏
Nastase was the Fed Cup captain for Romania. And his horrible antics as the coach got him kicked off by the Romanian Tennis Federation in 2022. He was cursing at Simona Halep during a match. Totally uncalled for. Old habits never die with the "nasty one". But he was funny on those Miller Lite beer commercials in the 1970s.
an asshole like Trump who was normalized for far too long because he was "amusing." So was Hitler to his followers
lol, He also propositioned the GB captain, Anne keothavong, offering to visit her hotel room to "show her a good time!"😂
@@edgar7525😂😂😂
Awesome!!! No find me Nasty/Mac '79 USO all of it :)
U mean 1979 . As I recall the highlights the tennis was insane , and of course the circus was nuts as well
@@alexmoore3688 Yup typo I hit the 0 instead of 9 thanks. You can find segments of it on YouDeath but never the whole thing!
What would have been great is Trabert absolutely kicking Nastase’s ass after the match. Cause he wanted too. And the entire crowd wanted the same.
Tantrums aside....Nastase was damned good tennis player, entertaining as hell
It looks and sounds like their racquets are strung at very low tensions.
Nastase is clearly the more talented player, but Pohmann's awkward style must have been a nightmare to deal with, lol.
Looks like they are playing in slow motion
I know they are wooden rackets, but those 1st serves are like 2nd serves from the WTA.
I remember this match. It gets 'strange'.
Nastase felt that there should have been a forfeit and that the stoppage was unjustified and against the rules. He was right. But wow, he really went nuts.
Yes, but even before he shot a ball at the photographer.
He was not right. The rules now prove you wrong. Some of you nasty fans would be awful to be around.
@@blurredlenzpictures3251 Based on what he was not right? According to what I've read, these were the rules (but correct me if I'm wrong). This doesn't mean his reaction was right.
@@blurredlenzpictures3251 In fact it was the rule back then that you could only be treated at a changeover, not during a game. This rule changed about 25 years ago. Nowadays you can be treated by a doctor/trainer whenever you want.
Nastase- what a work!
Its not Nastasi, its Nastase 👍
these guys wouldn't even win the club championship in a small town if they were playing today.
Nasty’s finest hour. 😆
I hadn't really that early rounds were only best of three sets for the men, not just the women, in the Open. How many years did they do that?
until 1979
@@TENNISPROHISTORY They should bring that back.
Damn, Nastase was pissed!
Nastase would have been kicked off the court and suspended in today's game for slinging the ball at the camera man like he did.
The young women seemingly wanting to get close to Nasty.
Match du siècle, lequel ❓😮
Despite all the chaos of the match, you can see Nastase's brilliance as a player. He should have been one of the greatest of all time if he could have mastered the mental aspects of the game.
agreed, but thats like saying Trump could get 400 electoral votes if he wasn't a fascist.
@@davidr2802What a joke. Always knew we would find an idiot on here like you. Unbelievable
His backhand would be destroyed by any modern player.
@davidr2802 true but imagine if the Democrats hadn't gone full fascist how many votes they could get.
How can this be the US Open?? Format is best of three sets. So, what is it? It’s at Forest Hills.
US Open was formerly played in Forrest Hills until 1975
@@christian-andreaspistor2973 I know that. My point is that they are playing best of three sets. US Open would be best iof 5.
@@purveyoroffinefoodslaszlo9955 I did look it up. First 3 rounds of US Open were played "best of 3" format then. From round 4 on it was "best of five".
Pohmann’s serve is totally non-offensive. Hard to believe he was able to almost win this match.
Served 90% and never gave away free points
And his backhand would annoy a coach coaching a club player.
Frankly, I've never seen such a behaviour on a tennis court from any player.
Nastase agressing a photograph and throwing a ball at him for no real reason, Nastase shouting at the crowd and moaning, then insulting the referee 2 times by saying vrey loudly "you sun of a bitch !". Then admonesting his opponent several times and even at the end of a match at the net.
His opponent refused to sheke hands with him and even the referee whixh made him even more angry.
He was like a true psycho out there and even Mc Enroe is an altar boy compared to him.
Strange he was not disqualified...
The chair umpire not shaking Nastase's hand was very unprofessional. Nastase was being heckled by the crowd for almost the entire match and the umpire did nothing to prevent it.
During the match Nastase is repeatedly heard telling the referee and opponent “son of a b..h.” So incredible that he was pardoned by the referee and supervisor.
@@TENNISPROHISTORY then he should have given him a point penalty or default.
can someone explain me why Nastase was so angry after the match ? 😳
Welcome Back Kotter 12:36
ils marchaient a l 'epoque !
What an odd service motion Pohmann has.
but ilie nastasse was right, the referee was for pohrmann.
But amazing that nastasse dont get disualifited.
You never learned an ounce of sportsmanship huh?
I think the "code of conduct" rules were not in effect then. Therefore Nastase virtually could do anything without being disqualified...These rules would be established about 1980 I believe. Because the "tennis bad boys" Nastase, Connors and McEnroe did too much damage to the image of the "white sport" of tennis...
What was he so angry about at the end?
He was angry because he felt the match should have been a default for his opponent when his opponent was delaying the game several times due to his injury. Nastase was at risk for losing the match since he had to play a tiebreaker and it caused him undue stress.
35:30 😂😂😂
Tiene razon el rumano. El aleman estuvo fingiendo dolor. Mientras seguia corriendo y yendose a la red. Fue una payasada, y nastase tiene razon en insultarlo.
I don’t eat popcorn, it’s bad for my diverticulitis.
I guess foot fault doesn't matter
Does anyone know when (year) this match took place?
Manila '74
Thanks!!
1976
@@danielburg9527 He was kidding. It was the US Open, 1976.
How come on,y three sets
if you play this at x1.25 its basically modern tennis
Modern tennis is garbage
you have to switch to x3.0 when Pohmann is serving though. 😄
Thats why modern tennis is boring. This was a tactical game, modern tennis is, hit as hard as you can (and you can because of all this crapy technology) , don't look where your opponent is.
With the forehand western grip resulting in topspin modern tennis begun. Borg was the first embassador of modern topspin tennis.
@@smftrsddvjiou6443exactly. Modern tennis is horrid. Bore fest. It was a Broadway show then. The equipment was horrible. Nothing was given to the player. No assistance. Personality loaded back then. Fun to watch. Not today.
Think pohmann disappeared from tennis after this match
ruclips.net/video/Bm_MVt-xKRI/видео.htmlsi=1a9mJTHkvdnBkcs2
This is at 5-6 third set, one of the many duces. If this isn’t a center hash mark foot fault I don’t know what is. He did this a couple of times in this game and several times in the tie breaker. Amazed the announcers didn’t point it out.
He doesn't have any injury at all! What a clown...the game is so outdated! Hilarious.
You clearly don’t know squat.
without injury he would have beaten the romanian clown
There is no question Pohmann was faking his cramps. He’s grabbing his leg on 3 occasions like it was run over by a truck, and all 3 times he relaxes by the time he returns to serve. Bro, that’s humanly impossible. Nastase was right in the end calling him out
I don't think so. Cramps in tennis is a strange thing. They seem to come when you are relaxed. Somehow you can play through it limping. Then it comes back after the point is finished. I have seen this many times and also while playing myself.
I thought that too but have you ever had one? .... feels like your muscle has exploded D:
Absolutely not faking cramps.

The most disgusting display of infantilism I’ve ever seen. He’s worse than Kyrgos. Should’ve been disqualified when he hit tennis ball at the photographer, Tony Trabert was right.
Nastase, should have been defaulted several times, and a poor sport, and a baby!!!
Defaulted AND Arrested
Pohman could be a very disrespectful tv commentator years later. Nastase did him right beforehand!
Nastase´s behaviour in this match just can not be excused in any way.
I quite liked Pohmann as commentator. In fact, I preferred him over Kottkamp and Deike. Szepanski was in a league of his own though, of course.
Do you have examples for Pohmann being disrespectful?
war einer der besten deutschen Tenniskommentatoren
Amazing how much the game has changed. It looks like they are just casually swatting at the ball, compared to how hard they hit it today. Also, much lower athleticism. Nastase looks like he's hardly bending his knees on his serve, if at all, and on other shots as well.
Well your first sentence is correct. But then you go off the rails. Everything you are seeing today is artificial. It’s all due to the giant rackets and artificial strings that provide the power the top spin and the control. Tennis today has no personality no charisma it’s just boring robots. Giant serve that’s it. Stand on the baseline. Silly two handed backhand. They are only hitting the ball with power today, because of the Rackets and the strings. As a matter fact, they’re much less athletic today than ever because the equipment is performing for them. They’re being assisted today with the equipment we’re back then they didn’t have anything except themselves to perform those rackets that you were looking at back in 1978 the head size was about a 65 to 75 and everyone just used to cut strings that’s it. You don’t need power to make tennis exciting and interesting as a matter fact becomes more exciting chess match when you don’t use power. Granted Nataste’ opponent in this video has a very poor serve and no backhand so he is not a good example it’s amazing he made it into the pros. But Nataste was great that serve was easily exceeding 100 mph and he was using a small piece of wood. They both had great volleys and net games. That’s non existent today. But if you watch a 1980 match of Connors McEnroe Lendl Borg Nataste Vilas Ashe Laver they were unreal and they all use just a tiny piece of wood as the racket. The net game the chess match the volleys then were pure athletic. Genius tennis. That’s called real tennis. That doesn’t exist anymore. There is a reason why only wood bats are used in the major leagues today because if artificial equipment was used in the major leagues today Every single player would be hitting at 600 foot home run. Keeping tradition is what kept the magic in baseball. You can’t even compare statistics today in tennis because if the players today had to use 1978 or real equipment many of them would never win a grand slam and many would never be in the pros. I do agree that the modern equipment has helped the women’s game. They play a mostly baseline game and you don’t want to watch moon balls going back and forth so the women’s game has improved dramatically and they are more athletic today except for Martina she was the best. But the mens game today is ruined.
