  • @jeromeinen7912
    @jeromeinen7912 8 дней назад +7

    Sad that on the one occasion Nastase was totally right getting angry, he did not get justice. When Pohman was treated for his injury, he should have left the court and conceded the game. It was always the rule that you can not be treated or ask injury time during the game, only in the pause between the uneven games. ‘Play must be continuous’. The umpire made a mistake by not calling the game for Nastase two times.

      This rule with injury treatment only being possible at changeovers was in effect back then. This has changed about 25 years ago. Nowadays you can be treated whenever you want, also during a service game without any punishment or losing a point. For instance Stefan Edberg was treated during his last official match at the Davis Cup final 1996 against Frenchman Pioline, also while the service game was still in progress.

    Nastase was completely disconnected from tennis by that time. After Wimbledon 1976 he had no interest at all for the circuit, but curiously enough, when he played an invitational with big prize money, he rejuvenated. Then he was very professional for his sponsors and televisions and all that stuff, he was once at the top of the rankings and then monetized everything, his bad behaviour on court and his night life gave him more money and popularity. If you look at the video, furious as he was, he didn't forget to give the german shoes box to someone in the crowd

    The reason Nastase could do whatever he wanted is because there were no rules against any of that back then. Nobody had ever acted like that, so there were no rules. They didn’t know what to do with him. One time they defaulted him and the supervisor came and changed the chair umpire instead! It was after him, Connors, and McEnroe that rules and penalties started to be created and imposed.

      I think the "code of conduct" rules were not in effect then. Therefore Nastase virtually could do anything without being disqualified...These rules would be established about 1980 I believe. Because the "tennis bad boys" Nastase, Connors and McEnroe did too much damage to the image of the "white sport" of tennis...

    • @circuitdesign
      @circuitdesign 8 дней назад +2

      He was angry because he felt the match should have been a default for his opponent when his opponent was delaying the game several times due to his injury. Nastase was at risk for losing the match since he had to play a tiebreaker and it caused him undue stress.

    There is no question Pohmann was faking his cramps. He’s grabbing his leg on 3 occasions like it was run over by a truck, and all 3 times he relaxes by the time he returns to serve. Bro, that’s humanly impossible. Nastase was right in the end calling him out

      I don't think so. Cramps in tennis is a strange thing. They seem to come when you are relaxed. Somehow you can play through it limping. Then it comes back after the point is finished. I have seen this many times and also while playing myself.

    Amazing how much the game has changed. It looks like they are just casually swatting at the ball, compared to how hard they hit it today. Also, much lower athleticism. Nastase looks like he's hardly bending his knees on his serve, if at all, and on other shots as well.

    • @TimTheMusicMan
      @TimTheMusicMan 5 дней назад

      Well your first sentence is correct. But then you go off the rails. Everything you are seeing today is artificial. It’s all due to the giant rackets and artificial strings that provide the power the top spin and the control. Tennis today has no personality no charisma it’s just boring robots. Giant serve that’s it. Stand on the baseline. Silly two handed backhand. They are only hitting the ball with power today, because of the Rackets and the strings. As a matter fact, they’re much less athletic today than ever because the equipment is performing for them. They’re being assisted today with the equipment we’re back then they didn’t have anything except themselves to perform those rackets that you were looking at back in 1978 the head size was about a 65 to 75 and everyone just used to cut strings that’s it. You don’t need power to make tennis exciting and interesting as a matter fact becomes more exciting chess match when you don’t use power. Granted Nataste’ opponent in this video has a very poor serve and no backhand so he is not a good example it’s amazing he made it into the pros. But Nataste was great that serve was easily exceeding 100 mph and he was using a small piece of wood. They both had great volleys and net games. That’s non existent today. But if you watch a 1980 match of Connors McEnroe Lendl Borg Nataste Vilas Ashe Laver they were unreal and they all use just a tiny piece of wood as the racket. The net game the chess match the volleys then were pure athletic. Genius tennis. That’s called real tennis. That doesn’t exist anymore. There is a reason why only wood bats are used in the major leagues today because if artificial equipment was used in the major leagues today Every single player would be hitting at 600 foot home run. Keeping tradition is what kept the magic in baseball. You can’t even compare statistics today in tennis because if the players today had to use 1978 or real equipment many of them would never win a grand slam and many would never be in the pros. I do agree that the modern equipment has helped the women’s game. They play a mostly baseline game and you don’t want to watch moon balls going back and forth so the women’s game has improved dramatically and they are more athletic today except for Martina she was the best. But the mens game today is ruined.
