Eastern Shore Railroad Train Goes Down Bad Track

- This is a video I made while on the Eastern Shore Of Virginia of a rare catch of the Eastern Shore Railroad in action. Only a couple of trains per week go down this 75 miles of privately owned single track from Pokomoke Maryland to Cape Charles Virginia where freight cars are loaded on to a barge and carried over the Chesapeake Bay to Virginia Beach and Norfolk. The line has become lessed used over the years and the tracks are very bad. I have caught a locomotive pulling one hopper for 20 miles at 20 miles per hour down this clickety clack old track.
I saw this RR move a 16 inch gun barrel from one of the Iowa class battleships to it's new home in a fort in Lewes, DE. It was mounted onto a depressed center flat car, that had extra truck sets at either end. The eastern shore of VA is a depressed area economically. I wouldn't be surprised if that line is currently inactive.
it is unfortunately abandoned n ripped up as of a few years ago
I just read that they closed this line down early this summer due to loss of business. Dang, I wanted to see it operating.
At 4:03 that train looked like it was about to fall off the train track
This is pure nostalgia at its best! Thank you for making this video! Unfortunately the Bay Shore Railroad is no longer in use today! So sad!
Cool video. Love that horn! It's funny at 3:00 that the car turns around rather than wait for a two vessel train.
This line is now a rails to trails project. Thank you for recording this.
Amazing that the company still considers that safe to run over at all.
That train was really rocking at about 4min. in. What a cool video though!
That engine sounds like a the irish rail GM class 121 & B141 type locomotives.
Nice vid!
Excellent capture, Alan, those tracks were whacky to say it in a funny way lol, :o)
Wow! His locomotive was rocking like a boat.
Wow, that was a profitable train.
Nice GP38 I love old EMD's and I believe that's a Leslie horn
Wow, how it is rock and rollin' beginning about 3:50 into the video, if I were that engineer, I'd have to take rolaids or maybe even dramamine
Excellent job! I used to work for ESHR before it became Bay Coast
I used to know a couple engineers that I used to ride the locomotive from Greenbush to Pocomoke and back. There names were Rudy and Kendall back in 1992 Do you know them?? I miss them..
I know Rudy very well. I was at his place in Raleigh about 2 weeks ago.
tdluvs Oh wow if you see or here from him again please tell him about my channel and tell him I am looking for him. I was in his home when he lived in Virginia Beach 20 years ago.
Ok I will let him know
Is there an email address to contact you?
The Bay Coast railroad needs to be completely rebuilt entirely. I used to ride home to Newark, DE on Fridays from the Naval Operating Base Norfolk in my first 2 years of active duty in Norfolk on board my first ship the USS Seattle AOE-3 where I did 2 Med cruises & 2 Caribbean cruises. The rail line then was the bankrupt Penn Central railroad. The opening of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel in 1964 all but killed freight train service on that line. My time on board my first ship in the Navy was from 9/22/1972 to 7/31/1974 & was what you can call a weekend commuter back then and so were many Navy sailors based in Norfolk were.
Looks like this railroad is still active, my brother saw an engine moving on the tracks yesterday north of Cape Charles. I saw eight or nine hopper cars sitting on a siding just north of Nassawadox. The track seems to be in poor condition with many rotten ties and loose spikes.
My uncle was a conductor for CP Rail. I think he would have laughed at that. Oh...he worked in Labrador but he was from Sept Iles, Quebec or Seven Islands, Quebec. He had pictures of snow that were like tunnels that matched the train's height on both sides of the train. That track sure is rickety. I laughed watching the train rock! Damn.
You could see the train wobbling down that track.
Another good video. Yes, it's sad how things are falling apart. I see that some of the commentators caught it rocking to and fro also. That would be enough to make me sick. I guess the engineer is use to it by now. Keep them coming, Alan.
It's tough to see how hauling one car is cost effective. I heard that 4 to 5 thousand gallons of fuel will go around a thousand miles. I'm not sure of that and I'm sure it depends on your load but, jeez; one car? Wouldn't a truck be easier to maintain and run? It's overkill, like driving thumb tacks with a sledge hammer.
where's the bells for the 1st crossing?
Looks like a former Southern Pacific GP40-2..or GP38-2 without dynamic brakes
SD with 3 axle trucks, maybe?
Wow, I'm late. Anyways, its actually an ex-PRSL EMD GP38 (Most likely No. 2002). It was then sent to Penn Central as PC 2012 then sold off again to Conrail as CR 7672 then to CSX as CSXT 1946. It was lastly leased to LLPX who then renumbered it to 2014 and retained its original black livery, then they eventually leased to the Bay Coast Railroad or the Eastern Shore Railroad.
I used to run the 2014 all the time when it was stationed in little creek. I loved the horn. The track was bad. Most of the time 10mph was max. There is paint missing in an arc on the electrical cabinets from the zippers on our coats swinging back and forth. Shame the two GP-9s will probably be scrapped. Nice catch they don't run much at all anymore.
Going back to visit that railroad again in July. It is now called the Bay Coast Railroad
when they do get scrapped, can i have a bell?
@Rails, Rubber and Rust, What kind of horn was that on the 2014 engine?
holy cow ! this track is probably worse than CEMR `s pine falls subdivision ! i am pretty sure that the track can only carry up to 85 lbs . they probably fixed it ( sort of ) but traffic on the line is really slow . same with winnipeg`s other short line GWWD .
Man that line is old, a shortline that runs through my hometown has a couple miles of track that they don't use anymore except for excursions and when the circus comes to town, the tracks look like this
Nice video!!!!! Thanks for posting..
That train was rocking like a boss
Man, for one train a day with one car, that is pretty good track.
How on earth did you manage to get this?! They only run one or two trains per WEEK! This is definitely going on my favorites! Thanks for posting!
Awe man,at least the horn works and you still have a train every other week.In the uk during the 60's,Mr.Beecham was hired to do a viability study on our 'railroads' or railways. The result was closure of hundreds of miles of track, branch lines etc.Enjoy them while you still have them.Put another way, what would you be doing otherwise if the trains were not there? ;-)
Nice catch on that GP38
love the p3!
I love that horn
I would drink ocean water to get the damn thing back in business
The locomotive gives the date away 😂
OMG,very scary, looked like engine+ lone car were going to roll over at one location! I've seen worse track in.Midwest on old short lines.
Go look at a video on the Muamee & Western. I think you'll like it. :)
Great video!
I would think that track was abandoned. Coll paint scheme but awful horn. Still loved the video.
Love the SP Nathan Old Cast P3
You should see the buffalo southerns track here in Hamburg,NY
is there a cement plant for the covered hoppers on the shore? LEHX is a very visible reporting Mark in Carroll county, md
I saw CEMR 5396 and CCGX 5311 yesterday.
That is a good P3 horn
When I’m looking at Google earth I believe that the tore out the line from Exmore to the beginning of the line
this is like the colt short line railroad in columbia missouri
Interesting Railroad that never runs into a neighborhood like this
I love the Eastern shore of Va!!!
who was the original owner of the unit. LOVE THE HORN AND VIDEO
The unit started its life as PC 2012 for the Penn Central Railroad in the early 70's
I miss the old gp38s. no more around my area they all were thrown out by up. since its all mains no need for these old locos. miss the days of gp38s idling on sidings.
Compared to the ND&W those tracks look brand new, lol.
nice horn
4:54 emergency vehicle chirping its siren in the background somewhere...
So in the intro, did that CSX train almost hit the Amtrak? Was that supposed to happen?
Editing done with something like video Photoshop.. Those trains never came close to hitting each other.
Is engine 2014 the only engine that still runs that line?
4:30 I dont know why, but this is a bit ominous, the train just slowly creeping in the railyard 😅
is it just me, or does that p3 echo southern pacific?
It's sad that this old railroad went abandon its a another railroad that did not have to go
Nice video! And first view, like, and comment! :-P
Do you know what’s funny?the year is 2014 and the train number is 2014
Hi Alan can you please do a video when you're reading hate comments and u react to them?
3:50 The locomotive rocking on that old track would make me a little nervous...
I looked on google earth and they took up all the tracks I guess the eastern shore RR went bankrupt
Trains aren't in VA beach anymore only Norfolk
its called Bay Coast Railroad as of 2006
:-( Looks as though the Eastern Shore don't get much traffic behind their rented LLPX Electro-Motive. At the very least these tracks could use a reballast to level them; they seem otherwise sound in the short term.
I am surprised that they didn't go bankrupt. How many engines do they own?
1
Train number 2014 lol
I'll be staying right near this rail line in Onancock, VA this week. Does this train run as far north as it, the whole line still today? I sure hope to get a glimpse of it at least once. Also, any tips on times it will go by there?
Hello Train Guy. The train does pass through that town but only a few times a week. It sits in Cape Charles about 30 miles south of you. It goes far north as Pokomoke Maryland. Times vary
I've stayed in Onancock, and yes. When I was there was 1 train there for the 4 days I was there.
Trevor Adams You were lucky to see that.
Millenniumforce that I now realise.
Is this the only short-line railroad you've filmed?
I've filmed 2: BNSF Manitoba, and Central Manitoba Railway
I have filmed a couple others
Which ones?
taylorover9001 Florida railroad museum the parrish line. The Stasburg Railroad in Lancaster PA The Florida Central Railroad
Yes about 2 times a week
Why don't they fix the line and signals???
King Fresh most of the crossing signals (except at the first crossing) are very new.
No gates or bells on gateless crossings
What if that train was coming in fast and he was on the track
And also when u were on the track, was there another crossing where eastern shore train was
cool
Tracks Now abandoned Sorry To say But no more Railfanning on this line!
Do you guys have beltpack down there??
I'm asking cause you seem to know your stuff as a rail fan.
One Car Only
HAHAHAHAHAHA
Did anyone see that idiot at 7:14 who went across the tracks 10 seconds away from death?
Main Line Productions yaa i saw him i was LIKE A 3 CAR TRAIN A 3 CAR TRAIN IT WILL ONLY TAKE 5 SECONDS TO THE TRAIN PASS ITS NOT A 400 CAR TRAIN GOD
DashLOL78 Cadynce I know right
Isn’t this line a rail trail now?
Yes no longer in service. Tracks removed. Service depletes in Church Hill, VA as of 2021 and train is from MDDE railroad
what street is it
looks like a ex prsl excr
how rusty were the tracks
EXTREMELY rusty
Not the worst railroad track in the world, but I have seen worse.
Mike :3
Can't make money hauling one car.
Easten shore bat train
Millennium force you're a little slow in the head.

At 7:11 2 cars were ignoring
Another good video. Yes, it's sad how things are falling apart. I see that some of the commentators caught it rocking to and fro also. That would be enough to make me sick. I guess the engineer is use to it by now. Keep them coming, Alan.
Amazing that the company still considers that safe to run over at all.
Great video!
