Eastern Shore Railroad Train Goes Down Bad Track

  • This is a video I made while on the Eastern Shore Of Virginia of a rare catch of the Eastern Shore Railroad in action. Only a couple of trains per week go down this 75 miles of privately owned single track from Pokomoke Maryland to Cape Charles Virginia where freight cars are loaded on to a barge and carried over the Chesapeake Bay to Virginia Beach and Norfolk. The line has become lessed used over the years and the tracks are very bad. I have caught a locomotive pulling one hopper for 20 miles at 20 miles per hour down this clickety clack old track.

I saw this RR move a 16 inch gun barrel from one of the Iowa class battleships to it's new home in a fort in Lewes, DE. It was mounted onto a depressed center flat car, that had extra truck sets at either end. The eastern shore of VA is a depressed area economically. I wouldn't be surprised if that line is currently inactive.

The Bay Coast railroad needs to be completely rebuilt entirely. I used to ride home to Newark, DE on Fridays from the Naval Operating Base Norfolk in my first 2 years of active duty in Norfolk on board my first ship the USS Seattle AOE-3 where I did 2 Med cruises & 2 Caribbean cruises. The rail line then was the bankrupt Penn Central railroad. The opening of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel in 1964 all but killed freight train service on that line. My time on board my first ship in the Navy was from 9/22/1972 to 7/31/1974 & was what you can call a weekend commuter back then and so were many Navy sailors based in Norfolk were.

Looks like this railroad is still active, my brother saw an engine moving on the tracks yesterday north of Cape Charles. I saw eight or nine hopper cars sitting on a siding just north of Nassawadox. The track seems to be in poor condition with many rotten ties and loose spikes.

My uncle was a conductor for CP Rail. I think he would have laughed at that. Oh...he worked in Labrador but he was from Sept Iles, Quebec or Seven Islands, Quebec. He had pictures of snow that were like tunnels that matched the train's height on both sides of the train. That track sure is rickety. I laughed watching the train rock! Damn.

It's tough to see how hauling one car is cost effective. I heard that 4 to 5 thousand gallons of fuel will go around a thousand miles. I'm not sure of that and I'm sure it depends on your load but, jeez; one car? Wouldn't a truck be easier to maintain and run? It's overkill, like driving thumb tacks with a sledge hammer.

Wow, I'm late. Anyways, its actually an ex-PRSL EMD GP38 (Most likely No. 2002). It was then sent to Penn Central as PC 2012 then sold off again to Conrail as CR 7672 then to CSX as CSXT 1946. It was lastly leased to LLPX who then renumbered it to 2014 and retained its original black livery, then they eventually leased to the Bay Coast Railroad or the Eastern Shore Railroad.

I used to run the 2014 all the time when it was stationed in little creek. I loved the horn. The track was bad. Most of the time 10mph was max. There is paint missing in an arc on the electrical cabinets from the zippers on our coats swinging back and forth. Shame the two GP-9s will probably be scrapped. Nice catch they don't run much at all anymore.

Awe man,at least the horn works and you still have a train every other week.In the uk during the 60's,Mr.Beecham was hired to do a viability study on our 'railroads' or railways. The result was closure of hundreds of miles of track, branch lines etc.Enjoy them while you still have them.Put another way, what would you be doing otherwise if the trains were not there? ;-)
