  • This is a video I made in Dover Florida at the Jerry Smith Road railroad crossing of a CSX Teco coal train cruising along at 50 MPH hitting a rail joint fast and hard causing the knuckles and the cars to bounce as it crosses the road. This needs to be repaired.

For the record, knowing nothing beyond the video description, I'd have made the responsible decision and been absolutely certain to contact CSX immediately.
I'm a lifelong railfan. I never worked the gig, but I grew up with trains running 50 feet from my back door, down an eight-foot bank. Amazingly, several homes in town are even closer to the tracks. I could never understand the confidence, lack of fear or good judgment, or the dire necessity that led people to build homes so close to such potentially dangerous locations. My small town made the map as a railroad town, and it's seen a few derailments, collisions, severe personal injuries, and a couple of pedestrian fatalities. The town's only a bit over a mile long, too. ; ]
The most major derailment I'm aware of happened literally minutes after I left for work one morning about 25 years ago. Wow. Time flies. Well, I went through the underpass at the bottom of the hill I lived on, as I did daily, and I came home in the afternoon to find it blocked by a boxcar that had fallen 15 or so feet, punched a few deep dents into the pavement, and left a couple of 20,000-pound rolls of paper underneath the trestle. Interesting moment of introspection. This is a hilly area, and one tanker had rolled down a 30-foot western embankment, crossed the third road leading north out of town, and was well on its way down another decline into a fairly robust stream. This, of course, is a speed-restricted area, being within a village.
There wasn't rush-hour-like traffic in town back then, but it's always been fairly bustling, and even these modestly busy roads could have had foot, bike or automobile traffic passing through at a very unfortunate moment. : / Anyway... .
The flexing in this video isn't even at a point of continuity in the modern ribbon rail -- it's at a plated joint, at a crossing grade, on what's obviously fairly open track as suggested by this train's speed. Virtually anywhere in America it's easy to see areas of trackbed that have settled ballast, allowing for sometimes considerable vertical rail flex and lifting of ties, but this has disaster written all over it. How many times can a joint like that, held together with four bolts, sustain that kind of force before failure? With that tonnage, at that speed, it could have broken as this was being filmed. I should read a bit further to see if the uploader ever reported this issue or has an update about its correction. This area of upstate New York is CSX territory, too. I'm sure that it was still Conrail at the time of the little incident I mentioned.

I grew up in a family of railroad personnel. But there are some problems that folks ARE NOT realizing here with blaming the track inspector at not catching this.
#1. Track Inspection vehicles are usually a small pick up truck that drives along the rails.
#2. The track inspector rarely gets out of the inspection truck UNLESS they see something that catches their attention or can feel an issue when the truck passes over the rail that could be a potential problem.
#3. Even though these trucks have rail wheels attached, THEY DO NOT PROPEL the truck along the rails, their RUBBER TIRES do!
#4. Weight of the truck is NO MATCH for a rail car or locomotive, therefore the rail in such a case MAY NOT FLEX under the trucks weight as it does with a train.
And finally, if you are videoing something that even REMOTELY looks like it may derail a train, IT IS and SHOULD BE YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO INFORM THE RAILROAD of such a POTENTIAL THREAT! Many RR's are very appreciative of this, because they really MAY NOT even be aware there could be an issue.
And if folks call in, there is usually an 800 phone number {on a small placard sign attached} on the crossing signal to call the railroad with issues you may see or experience, such as this, or malfunctioning crossing gates, a rail car that may not be sounding right and could have the potential to derail itself or the entire train.
YOU SHOULD ALWAYS CALL and if you video such things, YOU SHOULD MAKE IT CLEAR that YOU DID CALL ANYTHING LIKE THIS IN!
Otherwise, it makes you look more like a foamer or a brain-dead railfan. I'm sorry, but I call these as I see them when I see videos like this and NO COMMENT FROM THE VIDEOGRAPHER THAT THEY EVEN DID ANYTHING TO GET AN ISSUE THAT COULD BE POTENTIALLY HAZARDOUS FIXED!
I had railroad numbers locked into my cell phone when I used to go out and video trains, I also CALLED ANYTIME I spotted a disaster that could be in the making or crossing signals and gates malfunctioning.
As for this rail joint, it looks to me to be missing the rubber insulator between the rails that sometimes control the crossing signals, there's one before and after jointed rail at most highway crossings{but NOT with welded rail}.
Since there is such a wide gap there, which the flange of a rail car could hit just right and topple a car at the worst scenario at the speed they travel there, chances are it may not topple over, but just end up with the wheels of several cars on the ground on that side of the rail, and usually inside the rail, but they'll still do some damage.
Always think more to the worst scenario here and stay way back from such trains, as rail cars derailing depending on train speed can travel a lot further off those rails than you might think.
I've seen this same type of issue at many locations and, yes, I called it in, sometimes the railroad was already aware of it and told me they were in the process of getting someone out there to check it over and if needed, fix it. And when they didn't, they said Thank You, we'll have someone out there within a few hours to check the issue out.
Most often with an open joint like that before or after a crossing, depending on number of tracks and train travel, they would just insert a new rubber insulator and also, if needed brought in additional ballast and equipment to secure and make sure rail was safe for train travel once the repair was completed.
However, don't expect it to get repaired the same day you report it, it takes time, there are DOT and other channels the railroad has to go through once they locate, see and report on the issue, in some states this may/may not be different, then once all that is cleared up{the paperwork in triplicate{or more}, then they'll start on the repairs.
I worked for the local DOT in my area for a time as a temp, and I used to ask a lot of railroad/highway related questions to the folks that permit repairs like this to start.
I learned just what the railroad has to go through just to get a repair started, so if something isn't done in a day or a week or two, don't blame the railroads, sometimes it's the local DOT holding things up for them. And the DOT regulations DOES NOT always meet the same criteria as the RAILROADS REGULATIONS! Again, this MAY NOT or MAY be the same in other locations, counties, cities or states.
And that's when the issues for the railroad start before they can even start on their repair{s}.
This unfortunately can take anywhere from a few days or several weeks depending on location, whether traffic has to be rerouted while they make the repair, since the crossing at the location may have to be closed off for a day or even longer to correct the problem{s}.
It's NOT anywhere as simple as it may look to the average person or even the average railfan.

Doesn't look like a bad joint to me, more like bad ballasting. The ballast shifted so much that it left a significantly large space with no support for the railroad ties. This happens quite often at railroad crossings, because of runoff from storms and rain.

I agree, the leaf springs on the wheel carriages help counter the bouncing. The bouncing looks uniform enough that the cars probably won't de-rail.

joint actually looks very good if you ask me. but if you look close ballast or rock underneath rails near roadways has washed away. this is Florida which is harsh on rail regulation and roadway regulations. but also has sandstone, quarts, limestone and every rain or storm washes away. i bet this was fixed due to long rail and high speeds.

Tracks in similarly lousy condition to this CSX track near Plant City, FL, also exist on little-used portions of the Union Pacific system. As of 2014, the Martinez-Tracy, CA, line is used only for stowage of spare unit trains; parts of this line are Stop staked, presumably due to serious issues with the roadbed. Hopefully, this line will get a complete rebuild in the next six years, while #4014 is under overhaul at Cheyenne, WY.

actually this is so the train DOESN'T derail. train tracks are designed to bend and give with the weight and speed of the train as well as changes in temperature and changes in terrain. you've got a long heavy train which isn't travelling on a perfectly level surface 100% of the time so something has to give or the train would easily derail.

Actually, it's not that bad. It seems that CSX may have replaced the rail going across the road in the crossing. Just needs some ballast under the ties and the joint welded. There is a crossing here where I live that where water run off causes this too. I told a CSX workman and afterwards, a few days later they had it fixed.

Hey, looks like you are into RUclips like I am. I love this application and platform and operate very hard in master minding new channel and spreading them online. I have been doing this for a few years and now getting good at it. Soon I am launching a company that will help other You Tubers in promoting their channels.savour

They need to repack the ballast, and cement ties...

  • @BNforever2009
    @BNforever2009 10 лет назад

good video, just need more ballast underneath and shoring up, CSX wont do nothing uless its real bad. If that train can do 50 to 60mph with ease over that, they wont even bother.

A lot of wear and tear on those bolts from the rail moving. Should have seen if you could see shinny metal around the bolts. Then send a copy of it to the Federal Railroad Administration. That way if anything happens because nothing is done people know who all is at fault. You just might save a few lives, and let Big Brother know we are watching them.

Do you know if it's been repaired since this video?

  • @derekobrien4703
    @derekobrien4703 7 лет назад

No, the cars don't bounce, the rails pound into the road-bed where only two bolts per side, rather than the three that hole have been drilled for, have been installed on both rails; obvious slack workers have done the joint.
