That is magnificent. That violin gives the song even more a sense of sadness. That wailing soulful violin is haunting and gives the song even more power.

The violin starts at 3:06 and indeed greatly enhances the feel of the piece, the sadness, soulfulness and haunting quality, as you say.

Two of my absolute all time favourites, playing together. Stéphane Grappelli of the Quintette du Hot Club de France, has to be THE all time great jazz violinist, playing with David Gilmour, one of the finest classical rock guitarists ever. Pure heaven.

@@mariorodriguez-alonso4864 It's unusual for Pink Floyd not to have it "bang on right". Superb musicianship... although Roger Waters admits his bass playing was not on par with the other members.... His bass work is only fantastic, not quite otherworldly. Fortunately, his songwriting is about... second to none.

If I am not mistaken this is included in the WYWH 2011 box set. I own the set but haven't pulled it out to give it a gander and listen for five or six years now and after listening to this It's time for me do so and test it out on my new audio gear i got for my computer. My parents got me into Pink Floyd they would usually put on PF after they would get into an argument. As a kid i didn't pay much attention to the band until i was about fourteen or fifteen. This album or Dark Side was the first PF CD i bought with my own money in 2001 and after that never looked back and bought nearly every PF album on CD and record. When i first heard this alternate cut of the song it brought me to tears, the album version sometimes does since the lyrics make me think of family members that have passed on and wishing they were still here.

Honestly, this is the definitive version of this song just because the guitar just sounds so magnificent and the violin goes great as well. Of course it is sort of a demo, but if I were in that studio in 1975 I would've went with this version and worked on it to make it a truly finished song.

I don't know if it's the new mix, and the reworked dynamics, but this version seems stronger than the 'official' album version; the form makes more sense, it's less monotonous, it seems like happy nostalgia, a sort of 'saudade'. It made me love the song again, it was one of my favourite songs in my teen years.

@@corporalclegg5057 an alternative take of the immmortal song Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd, played the violin by the great and virtuous Stephane Grappelli, was recorded in 1975, and they thought that the shot no longer existed, because by mistake they recorded on it.
Fortunalety, they discovered that the shot had not been deleted, it was saved. It was releasd in 2012 on Pink Floyd: Ressisue Project. Nick Mason, Pink Floyd drummer, has always opined that this is the version what should it be in the original albúm of 1975. ''I think that was the crown jewel in particular'', he say about it. It´s wonderful that it still exists. ''Mason says that the collaboration arose by chance, with Grappelli working in a nearby studio. Mason says that the jazz leyend just stopped in the door of their studio, just to say hi, and someone had the courage of say: ''Would you like to play with us for a while?''
Unfortunalety, Grappelli, who rose to fame with Django Reinhardt in 1930, in the times of ''Quintette du Hot Club'' of France, was dead in 1997 - long before his work in ''Wish You Were Here'' finally saw the light. ''I can´t understand yet why we don´t use it at the time'' add Mason. ''It´s beautiful, i think''.

My thoughts also, I've always appreciated the soft soulful sound of the song itself, and when played along with three or four guitars, a banjo (!?), and and violin (but softly) this song can overwhelm a room.
For me, Grappelli overpowers the song and diminishes it's overall feeling when he 'lays into it.

Jeez, Grapelli's blue notes are BLUE. What a performance, I'm shocked more of it didn't make it into the album cut, it would've sounded great with an old time recording effect or a fading radio effect, to tie it in with the radio static and symphony sting from the beginning. Seems like a missed opportunity, says this armchair producer lol.

One of the reasons it never made it past Roger is that he saw it as sort of an insult to Grappelli, you originally couldn't hear him even more than you can in this, the beautifully remastered mix that wasn't heard until the Experience version of the album was released in 2011.

Far from "killing it," I think the violin makes near-perfect sense. This was probably his 1st and only pass, done as one continuous take. Grappelli was a master improviser. There are a couple of parts where he clashes a bit, but they could have just mixed those parts out or asked him to punch in something tamer just in those parts.
On the albums he did w/Yehudi Menuhin, he improvised his solos and wrote out solos for Menuhin to play, because, by his own admission, Yehudi couldn't improvise.

Super interesting comment, to me. I hadn't thought about the mixing process at all, but, of course, it is what creates perfection when a genius improvises something and it needs some smoothing out. Thanks for this perspective!

In the 1970's there was still a market for booklets with sheet music from various pop albums, and this wannabe/never-to-be guitar hero bought an edition of Wish You Were Here (arranged for piano and guitar). It taught me to play a few songs, but more interesting was an interview with Roger Waters (first published elsewhere) in which he's asked about a rumour the interviewer had heard, that Stéphane Grappelli was on the album. Waters confirmed, saying Grappelli was in the building and visited the Floyds in the studio. They asked, veeery humbly I suppose, if he'd be willing to add some violin to a song, and he said "why not". They knew he didn't have much time, so there wasn't much rehearsing, making this basically an improvisation. Waters says that one can hear him on this song towards the end just before the wind sets in "if you listen very, very hard" (am quoting from memory here). Don't know how many times I tried, always cranking the volume to max, before I gave up - sometimes in the 80's. Just the wind. Now, suddenly coming across this recording, I was completely blown away when here the violin comes in right in front of everything else, playing the most beautiful lyrically jazzy solo, continuing through the second half of the song. What's on the LP is good, damn good, but this is heaven. I don't need to wish for him any longer. He's here.
