Back in 1955 I saw the Dixie Hummingbirds with Sam Cooke and The Soul Stirrers in Charleston, SC, my hometown. What a program that was! I got to meet Ira Tucker and Sam Cooke the same night. I talked with Cooke the next month when the group returned to Charleston, and over the years I was blessed to see and talk with Ira Tucker a few times. The last time I saw The Birds was in 1994 in Suffolk, VA, and Howard Carroll told me how he discovered and recruited Julius Cheeks for the Nightingales. Paul Owens was also an original member of the Nightingales before he went to the Swan Silvertones. Carl Davis replaced Claude Jeter of the Swan Silvertones. The first Gospel groups I saw were the Swan Silvertones and Spirit of Memphis Quartet in 1951 at age 10. I saw the great groups including both Five Blind Boys together, Pilgrim Travelers, Harmonizing Four, The Sensational Nightingales, Clara Ward and Ward Singers, Albertina Walker and Caravans, Gospel Harmonettes, Davis Sisters, Brother Joe May, Edna Gallman Cooke, Highway QCs, and many others, but the Birds were at the top especially when James Walker, Davis, and BoBo were with the group. I am now 76 and a forever lover of old time Gospel.
carollouis1941 did you see the bass singer William Bobo?
You are blessed. Edna Gallman Cooke sung at my father's church. She was born in my home town, Columbia SC and is buried here also
@@KendallKent Yes, I saw the fantastic bass singer, Bobo, twice in 1955.
@@carollouis1941 wow what was he like?
I'm
This is my entire childhood in one video, my Grandfather sang in a quartet and used to play the Hummingbirds all the time🙏🏾🙏🏾❤️❤️
Grateful that these videos are on you tube because it gives me a chance to see and hear my grandfather's voice
he sho could sang...loved him ...God bless...
Thank you
Dominique Lee Oh, how wonderful. I'm so happy for you!
+Dominique Lee God bless you. I find it a shame that few people have this same joy for music anymore. Whether you are religious or not - the music is the message.
Which group member is your grandfather?
The best singer's of all times.
This is one of the wonders of the inter net. Having outstanding videos like these.
Lawd have Mercy! Just listening to these songs sang back to back and feeling the energy/spirit emanated can wear you out! As a lead singer, pacing oneself is quite a task when your singing from your heart more than your head! This another reason I respect, study and have adored the DHs all my life. I had the privilege of seeing them live for a few consecutive years while I lived in Tampa, FL. Each year the experience was fresh, real and powerful! When they hit that stage you knew it was on from the first song to the last! Another note they were so down to earth and friendly and didn't mind mixing and taking pics with us fans! These are memories I'll cherish for the rest of my life! BTW, the lineup back then was Ira Tucker, Beechy Thompson, James Walker and Howard Carroll and sometimes Paul Owens or Carl Davis! Man those were the days!
The old Black gospel groups from the 60's on back are the greatest.
I grew up listening to the Dixie Hummingbirds, Swan Silvertones, Hi-Way QC's--you name it! Reminds me of my father.
I have been listening to great gosple music sense i was very young boy. I really love gosple music, and fact it's all i ever listen too.
My Daddy used to sing on program with these 'Bird's'. Blind Boys from Ala.My childhood memories.Ira Tucker and late James Walker not to mention guitar player,Howard Carroll . Lord cant do nothing but sit here and praise God!! I'm not trying to take nothing from no one is this group, but these were the best!!!!
There was no other like Mr. Ira Tucker!
And I mean NO OTHER❤❤❤❤
Back in the day, there was lots of harmonizing when the groups sang gospel, and less musical instruments.
This is a very enjoyable video of the Dixie Hummingbirds.

thanks for posting this video, this is a classic, the birds were in rare form. so many songs in hour. flat foot singing...harmonic sound great. not to mention how these guy were true gentlemen (ira t, james b d, howard c, beachey t, james w) had to privilege to sponsor the group and sing on a program with them in the late 70s
Stanley Marshall Such an honor. Thank you.

PURE GOLD!!! These recent postings of the "Birds" cheat death!!! Their legacy will never be equaled!
+Yoayts ben Yoatys Brother Howard is probably the most underrated guitar player of the last 50/60 years. I could listen to him every minute of every day for the rest of my life, I am a guitar player, and every time I listen to Howard Carroll, I learn something new. And I am 53 years old, and I am not at all religious.
I'm not certain of the actual date but it was definitely after 1988. My dad Mr JAMES B Davis had retired around that time. THE group continued on for quite awhile after that. Dad was very proud of them for continuing to carry the touch of his dreams for such a long time.
+Janice Watlington God bless you. God bless you and your father. I am not a terribly religious man, but when I feel down I put on the Dixie Hummingbirds - and suddenly my day is good. And brother Howard owns that guitar like nobody else
+garcemac You are so right! Over 60 years plus I have been listening to them sing and there are and never will be a group of Gospel singers who sang with such passion as The Dixie Hummingbirds.
Mr. Davis was so good, he ran the group, can't forget Bo Bo.
Saw the birds in Pine Bluff, Ar. in '93... odd to see such international stars traveling in a van. but they were still hard hitting , no Beechie, very personable guys Howard and tucker took pictures with me which are treasured heirlooms now. This concert was identical to this one.
One of the best videos I have seen!
Rip : Howard Carroll (1924 - October 17) Who sang guitar & sang baritone with the Dixie Hummingbirds & was thier oldest member when he passed away
Johnnralph What a guitar player!
Love myself good gospel.
+deloris thomas Because the music is honest and comes from the heart?
Howard Carroll 29:33-30:08...WOW!!!!!!!
+Andre Kilpatrick yup.....Mr. Carroll is awesome........SWEEEEET TONE, CHOPS FOR DAYS!
Yes indeed!!!!
+Andre Kilpatrick Brother Howard knows all the chords - and he knows exactly when to use them. This beautiful man is not doing too well now. Send him your best wishes on Facebook. Howard Carroll Dixie Hummingbird.

If they had solid bass guitar and drummer, the music would sound more full cause that guitar player is covering much .
True.
"If" is for when a person doesn't appreciate what "is".......The Lord gave them exactly what was needed for their unique sound
They used to have a bass guitar... his name was William Bobo the pumping bass singer!
believe it or not back in the day that was about it for a rythymn section for a Quartet : A Guitar.
Music Sound So Good, Bring Back Memories.
Gltch in sound @ 3:39 sucks.
😳😬
I didn’t appreciate this kind of singing until I grew up, this is what you call singing 🎤 🎤
The Hummingbirds, unplugged😊
