He was not on the all-out aggression like he was with the others in the room, he was copying whatever he was doing, proving that he was better. At one point he managed to slip under and dealt a backwards stab to the calf while walking away before he turned and loomed over the wounded Jedi. He could have have easily just scored a lethal slash right there, but instead he waited for him to get back up and fell backwards towards the window for the eventual scene of begging for Anakin's help.
1:15 is a perfect example of what a realistic sword clash would be. In real combat, no one would ever lock their blades because they are moving so fast. In any scenario that this does happen, people try to circumvent around the block in an attempt to push their opponent or disorient them, but the blades are never in a fixed position.
The choreography here is a lot more intense than what we saw in the movie, and the implications are different too. Lucas said Windu beat Palpatine fair and square in the movie, even though it looks a little ambiguous. Here, it looks like Palpatine threw the fight or Windu got really lucky.
That’s because Lucas never really said Windu won “fair and square”, in fact he’s been explicitly stated to have worked with Nick in making the dueling prowess levels of each prequel character where Sidious is ranked above Windu “The fighting has evolved considerably in these last three movies. *George works on a system of levels. Yoda is a level nine. Darth Sidious is a level nine. Mace Windu is a level eight.*” (The Star Wars Archives: Episode I-III) “*George knows the levels, myself and George talked about levels and how it was.* But it's more, it's not like a black belt, it's more like a Richter scale. So the difference between eight, Obi's an eight, so the difference between an eight and a nine is enormous.” (Nick Gillard, Revenge of the Sith DVD Commentary)
@@BiriBiri925 But that doesn’t mean Mace won the fight considering Palpatine can still fight back with his lightning. "Okay, well, this sequence always started out with Mace overpowering Palpatine, and then Palpatine using his powers to try to destroy Mace, and Mace deflecting his rays with his lightsaber. And it always was that Anakin cut the lightsaber out of his hand. **But this part where he pretends to lose his power** and be weak was something that I added later because this moved the point where Anakin turns down to this moment right here, and you can see now that it's very clear that he wants him to go on trial so he can pump him for information about how to get these powers." (George Lucas, Revenge of the Sith DVD Commentary) Lucas simultaneously states Palpatine was faking weakness in the lightning exchange and is confirmed to have line-edited and endorse the adult novel where Mace’s internal thoughts are conceding to Palpatine’s lightning and being this close to having to eat his own purple blade in the face because he couldn’t hold it back any longer just before Palpatine stops (confirmed by Lucas above to have been faking) "You're the chosen one, Anakin," Mace said, his voice going thin with strain. **This was beyond Vaapad; he had no strength left to fight against his own blade**” … **Mace's blade bent so close to his face that he was choking on ozone. "Anakin, he's too strong for me-"** And through the author’s own words, that is there because Lucas *wanted* it to be there. "What's in that book is there because Mr. Lucas wanted it to be there. What's not in the book is not there because Mr. Lucas wanted it gone." (Matthew Stover, starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Star_Wars:_Revenge_of_the_Sith_(novelization)#Canonicity)

Yes! I was waiting for this fight for so long 💜 I'm surprised of how much of it stayed, specially in the second part, and Sidious attitude and stance too.
i love how the performers all make lightsaber noises lol also makes me wish we got even one lightsaber duel with a female force user in the prequel trilogy!
Absolutely loving all this great footage you've been able to find and upload Nick ❤️🔥 but by any chance do you have anything from Attack of the Clones?
If this version of the duel made it to the screen, I don't think there would be any question to whether Mace stood an actual chance at defeating Palpatine. This stunt guy was on another level here, managing to appear so aggressive and fast with minimal effort. Mace was good enough to hang on but it was very clear that Palps dictated the tempo of the fight (well, until the very end but that was supposedly when he threw the fight). The actual duel made them seem much more evenly matched so when Mace disarmed Palpatine, it seemed like a realistic thing to have happened. Also, most of it was close ups of the actors face sand a lot of fast action cuts that takes away from the choreography.
tbh it would make sense for him to throw the fight to put anikan in the position to choose. If he won then it would not work. Palpatine was a sith and if he won then he would just be an enemy to kill. Putting Windu on top would force anikan to choose. Then of course he knew he was a good person so he would want to spare him.
@@star-warsien He didn’t say anything about Windu winning “fair and square.” The quote most people are referring to in the Windu v Sidious fight is this: "*Okay, well, this sequence always started out with Mace overpowering Palpatine,* and then Palpatine using his powers to try to destroy Mace, and Mace deflecting his rays with his lightsaber. And it always was that Anakin cut the lightsaber out of his hand. *But this part where he pretends to lose his power and be weak* was something that I added later because this moved the point where Anakin turns down to this moment right here, and you can see now that it's very clear that he wants him to go on trial so he can pump him for information about how to get these powers." (George Lucas, Revenge of the Sith DVD Commentary) George said that this sequence starts with "Mace overpowering Palpatine," but notice how he specifies "this sequence." This context implies that he is describing the visual representation of the scene. While we do witness Mace overpowering Sidious visually, it doesn't necessarily reflect the underlying narrative of the scene. George then explicitly mentions that "Sidious pretends to lose his power," a fact evident from Ian's performance during the scene. It's understandable why many may advocate taking George's words at face value, as there appears to be no indication that he meant Mace's visual dominance alone. But here’s another statement from George Lucas concerning the Office Duel: "It seemed to make a lot more sense to have him remain loyal to the Jedi as long as possible, which meant later on in the scene with the fight with Mace, we re-did that scene, and at first, *there wasn't the part where the Emperor gives up. He says, 'Uh, you got me. You got me.'* It was basically the scene without that where it just gets more intense, then finally Anakin breaks down and saves him, but it doesn't have the same thing as that pause in there where you think that, and it also makes the Emperor a lot more slimy. It's really fun too. It's a fun dramatic thing to deal with." (George Lucas, Revenge of the Sith DVD Commentary) In this statement, Lucas appears to contradict his previous assertion. He mentions that initially, the fight was intended to escalate continuously until Anakin's intervention, without any reference to Palpatine losing or getting overpowered. It's only in the final version that George explicitly states that Sidious "gives up," not that he "loses." Which strongly suggests that Palpatine deliberately threw the fight rather than being defeated outright. When it comes to Nick Gillard, Lucas has explicitly discussed the up to 10 scale (that characters only reach a 9 on) with Gillard and had Gillard develop how they fought. “The fighting has evolved considerably in these last three movies. *George works on a system of levels. Yoda is a level nine. Darth Sidious is a level nine. Mace Windu is a level eight.”* (The Star Wars Archives: Episode I-III) So we have Lucas working with Gillard to make a dueling tier system in which Yoda and Sidious are above Windu, combined with his statements about Sidious “giving up” and “pretending to be weak”, the evidence leans more towards Sidious taking a dive, or as Gillard put it in his interview with SW Theory, “Palpatine being utterly in control of everything”
@@emelem6858 Thats a long winded way of saying that George added the fake begging AFTER the duel. It gives no credence to pretending to lose the saber duel. Thats not the case at all. The info in the making of RTOS reads (Lucas said)... "You have to be Mace or Yoda to even compete with the Emperor..." No one is questioning what happened after. The contention is if he actually won the duel itself, which George never said Sidious did. But asserted that Mace did overpower the emperor in the duel. He did not contradict anything he said in the duel itself, it was just what happened after with Sidious disarmed/giving up. As for Nick G, I love the guy but I listen to George Lucas over Nick G for obvious reasons.
@@star-warsien Good answer, but in the actual quote Lucas explicitly says that he added the scene where Palpatine gives up "later on in the scene with the fight with Mace”, not after. And he himself says that the original version without the giving up part only merely has the fight escalating until Anakin makes his choice, and only then is the fight over, meaning there isn't any focus given to the aftermath of the fight. "It seemed to make a lot more sense to have him remain loyal to the Jedi as long as possible, which meant later on in the scene with *the fight with Mace*, we re-did that scene, and at first, there wasn't the part where the Emperor gives up. He says, 'Uh, you got me. You got me.' *It was basically the scene without that where it just gets more intense*” Even in your full quote in the making of ROTS it says “You have to be either Mace or Yoda to compete with the Emperor," Lucas says. "If Anakin hadn't got all beat up, he could've beat the Emperor." Where Lucas clearly makes a distinction between being able to “beat” (Anakin) and merely “compete” with the Emperor (Mace or Yoda). And as for Nick Gillard, I’m not making any claims about who holds more authority between him and Lucas, merely that they are explicitly stated to be on the same wavelength on the dueling tier system that has Mace below the likes of Yoda and Sidious, which just adds up with all the pile of evidence in favor of Sidious “George knows the levels, myself and George talked about levels and how it was. But it's more, it's not like a black belt, it's more like a Richter scale. So the difference between eight, Obi's an eight, so the difference between an eight and a nine is enormous.” “The fighting has evolved considerably in these last three movies. George works on a system of levels. Yoda is a level nine. Darth Sidious is a level nine. Mace Windu is a level eight.”
I like the little dodges, near-hits, feints and grazings... shows you they're actually trying to hit each other as opposed to doing a choreographed dance with glowing sticks in their hands for no apparent reason.
Palps minimalist and precise movements showcase absolute control and awareness of outcome, a near crime that something so expressive of the character was excluded!
Hopefully someday when the empire falls amd star wars falls into good hands again they can rehire this guy and his team and make some more badass scenes for us.
I keep coming back to this video. It’s such a clean duel, and gives so much more insight into it. In my opinion, this duel shows just how much more advanced Sidious is as a duelist than the Jedi, and how much control he truly had throughout this fight. I know George has said outright that Mace won this duel, but, to me, this footage shows the opposite. Sidious’ handling of not just the Jedi, but his own lightsaber technique from the very start, let’s us know that Mace didn’t stand a chance. With everything Mace gave (even as a Vaapad specialist), Sidious, as a swordsman, had an immediate answer. He checked him in so many spots, from the glance to Mace’s side at the beginning, to the way he controlled their central line after that, up to when he burns him with his blade during their stand-off. There wasn’t a moment where it didn’t feel like Sidious was just a predator toying with his prey… He knew with Anakin coming he ultimately had to throw this fight, but with what Nick came up with for this duel, I now have no doubt in my mind, that the head-cannon I’ve carried since I was 12, was right all this time: Sidious dominated this duel. Thank you for this footage Nick, the fans appreciate it more than you know!
Watching this I totally buy that that is how the Dark Lord of the Sith would fight. It's such a shame we never got to see most of this realised in the final movie
I wish these came with the names of the stunt performers. So someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but could the guys be Ben Cooke, Michael Byrne, Nash Edgerton and Kyle Rowling? Do we know the woman's name? At first I thought it could be Mousy McCallum, but I don't know...
Thank you for sharing this here Mr Gillard. I liked the duels in the prequels very much. Was there ever a plan to show the duel between Cin Drallig and Anakin Skywalker which is briefly seen as a hologram in Episode 3?
The strike at :52, that is in the movie but you dont see Mace get injured in the leg. And though you dont see him get injured, there is a specific sound effect when Palpatine slashes down towards Mace. Always confuses me
In the actual duel they seem evenly matched and it is ambiguous whether Palpatine threw the fight. Here, Palpatine is clearly superior and likely did throw the fight.
So was there a deleted scene of cin drallig vs anakin skywalker that you did in revenge of the sith because all i saw was anakin fighting you as cin drallig in a hologram and it cuts to yoda and obi wan ?
It makes sense that this fight was also planned to be longer like the ending fights, I really wish we could get a recut of this movie that would be like Zack Snyder's Justice League where the full vision is restored lol
We need an updated PT with these extended saber battles added back in , updated effects, and maybe even new dialogue scenes (with deepfake tech nowadays, they could easily de-age a lot of the PT actors).
What have you done Geaorge ? Now we need a Special Edition of prequels to fix them. Such a waste of great fight choreography. Well just a few years and Fan edits /* films will be the same production level quality as movies today.

That’s because Lucas never really said Windu won “fair and square”, in fact he’s been explicitly stated to have worked with Nick in making the dueling prowess levels of each prequel character where Sidious is ranked above Windu
“The fighting has evolved considerably in these last three movies. *George works on a system of levels. Yoda is a level nine. Darth Sidious is a level nine. Mace Windu is a level eight.*”
(The Star Wars Archives: Episode I-III)
“*George knows the levels, myself and George talked about levels and how it was.* But it's more, it's not like a black belt, it's more like a Richter scale. So the difference between eight, Obi's an eight, so the difference between an eight and a nine is enormous.”
(Nick Gillard, Revenge of the Sith DVD Commentary)
@@emelem6858 >That’s because Lucas never really said Windu won “fair and square”
Yes, actually, Lucas said "Mace overpowered him."
**But this part where he pretends to lose his power** and be weak was something that I added later because this moved the point where Anakin turns down to this moment right here, and you can see now that it's very clear that he wants him to go on trial so he can pump him for information about how to get these powers."
(George Lucas, Revenge of the Sith DVD Commentary)
Lucas simultaneously states Palpatine was faking weakness in the lightning exchange and is confirmed to have line-edited and endorse the adult novel where Mace’s internal thoughts are conceding to Palpatine’s lightning and being this close to having to eat his own purple blade in the face because he couldn’t hold it back any longer just before Palpatine stops (confirmed by Lucas above to have been faking)
"You're the chosen one, Anakin," Mace said, his voice going thin with strain. **This was beyond Vaapad; he had no strength left to fight against his own blade**”
…
**Mace's blade bent so close to his face that he was choking on ozone. "Anakin, he's too strong for me-"**
And through the author’s own words, that is there because Lucas *wanted* it to be there.
"What's in that book is there because Mr. Lucas wanted it to be there. What's not in the book is not there because Mr. Lucas wanted it gone."
(Matthew Stover, starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Star_Wars:_Revenge_of_the_Sith_(novelization)#Canonicity)
in a pure 1 on 1 lightsaber duel mace should win (given his vaapad and status as perhaps the greatest lightsaber duelist in the order)
@@emelem6858 saying Mace is an eight and then saying Obi-Wan is an eight it’s crazy
Thank you Mr Guillard for uploading this videos ! I can’t tell you how much I am a fan of you and of this fighting style
Brilliant Nick - thanks for sharing this iconic lightsabre battle
Bless you for continuing to share these amazing scenes
Absolutely love this I can see what they actually do in the movie and also what is new I love the comparison
😭😭😭 I feel cheated out of getting an awsome star wars experience. Even if it was 4 hours Many of us would have watched the whole movie if it had scenes like this.
Now we see Palpatine being the superior duelist. He was toying with Windu.
In a 1v1 situation, i think Windu's ability(shatterpoint) would make him win against palpatine almost everytime
@@HarperLiaWorld Palpatine threw the fight, that's a fact and even Lucas said it.
@@royalistefrancais yes but even if palpatine didnt throw, how would he beat windu in a 1v1 lightsaber fight?
@@HarperLiaWorld Palpatine defeated 3 Jedi. Windu couldn't do anything to save them.
@@royalistefrancais why not beat windu first though?
Thankyou Mr Gillard for bringing us fans some real Star Wars again. ❤ I love what you and your team did and watching the amazing work they put into these fights.
It is soooo good!!!!!!!!! Thank you Mr. Gillard
Aun sin efectos especiales, estos duelos siguen siendo épicos
Yes! I was waiting for this fight for so long 💜 I'm surprised of how much of it stayed, specially in the second part, and Sidious attitude and stance too.
Superb material as always Nick!🙏🏻
The choreography is absolutely amazing
i love how the performers all make lightsaber noises lol
also makes me wish we got even one lightsaber duel with a female force user in the prequel trilogy!
Thank you for sharing these gems! Saberfighters all over the world rejoice)
i love the palpatine lightsaber style. great work Nik
Absolutely loving all this great footage you've been able to find and upload Nick ❤️🔥 but by any chance do you have anything from Attack of the Clones?
Can someone tell us who the stunt artists were and the choreographer? They are all amazing!!
@@BlackDiamond2718 This would make sense for sure. Unfortunately, George Lucas said that Windu won the fight fair and square.
@@star-warsien He didn’t say anything about Windu winning “fair and square.” The quote most people are referring to in the Windu v Sidious fight is this:
"*Okay, well, this sequence always started out with Mace overpowering Palpatine,* and then Palpatine using his powers to try to destroy Mace, and Mace deflecting his rays with his lightsaber. And it always was that Anakin cut the lightsaber out of his hand. *But this part where he pretends to lose his power and be weak* was something that I added later because this moved the point where Anakin turns down to this moment right here, and you can see now that it's very clear that he wants him to go on trial so he can pump him for information about how to get these powers."
(George Lucas, Revenge of the Sith DVD Commentary)
George said that this sequence starts with "Mace overpowering Palpatine," but notice how he specifies "this sequence." This context implies that he is describing the visual representation of the scene.
But here’s another statement from George Lucas concerning the Office Duel:
"It seemed to make a lot more sense to have him remain loyal to the Jedi as long as possible, which meant later on in the scene with the fight with Mace, we re-did that scene, and at first, *there wasn't the part where the Emperor gives up. It's a fun dramatic thing to deal with."
(George Lucas, Revenge of the Sith DVD Commentary)
In this statement, Lucas appears to contradict his previous assertion.
Mace Windu is a level eight.”*
(The Star Wars Archives: Episode I-III)
So we have Lucas working with Gillard to make a dueling tier system in which Yoda and Sidious are above Windu, combined with his statements about Sidious “giving up” and “pretending to be weak”, the evidence leans more towards Sidious taking a dive, or as Gillard put it in his interview with SW Theory, “Palpatine being utterly in control of everything”
You got me.' *It was basically the scene without that where it just gets more intense*”
Even in your full quote in the making of ROTS it says
“You have to be either Mace or Yoda to compete with the Emperor," Lucas says. "If Anakin hadn't got all beat up, he could've beat the Emperor."
Where Lucas clearly makes a distinction between being able to “beat” (Anakin) and merely “compete” with the Emperor (Mace or Yoda). And as for Nick Gillard, I’m not making any claims about who holds more authority between him and Lucas, merely that they are explicitly stated to be on the same wavelength on the dueling tier system that has Mace below the likes of Yoda and Sidious, which just adds up with all the pile of evidence in favor of Sidious
“George knows the levels, myself and George talked about levels and how it was. But it's more, it's not like a black belt, it's more like a Richter scale. So the difference between eight, Obi's an eight, so the difference between an eight and a nine is enormous.”
“The fighting has evolved considerably in these last three movies.
Thank you!!! So appreciate your work.
Literally doing God's work by releasing these
Awesome Nick! Sir Thanks for uploading these and sharing ⚔️⚡🙏
There wasn’t a moment where it didn’t feel like Sidious was just a predator toying with his prey…
He knew with Anakin coming he ultimately had to throw this fight, but with what Nick came up with for this duel, I now have no doubt in my mind, that the head-cannon I’ve carried since I was 12, was right all this time: Sidious dominated this duel.
Thank you for this footage Nick, the fans appreciate it more than you know!
I'd love to know the names of the other swordsmen (and swordswoman) who performed with you.
First and not ashamed! Keep it up master Drallig💪
What i like in this duel, is that Windu's Vaapad and Sidious' Juyo is meant to be a similar style.
You made my childhood ! Merci !!!
Watching this I totally buy that that is how the Dark Lord of the Sith would fight. It's such a shame we never got to see most of this realised in the final movie
Magnificent! Thanks Nick!
I think you are correct on all counts!
Thanks Mr Gillard. Big fan .
man, palpatine's fighting style looks raw and deadly, everything he does, as he always seems to be going for the kill.
Fascinating! So this is when Palpatine was using Anakin's saber and Mace disarmed it back to him.
Great work, Nick. Superb!!
素早らしい!殺陣のフルバージョンはとても有難い😆
Hello Nick! Do you have more raw videos of Ray Park 1997, training for the Phantom Menace? very good material everything you upload, thanks 🎉
Wow, awesome. Thanks for posting this.
absolutely brilliant choreography. thanks for sharing!
Thank you for sharing this here Mr Gillard. I liked the duels in the prequels very much. Was there ever a plan to show the duel between Cin Drallig and Anakin Skywalker which is briefly seen as a hologram in Episode 3?
This is incredible. Thank you for doing this!
All of these cut fights are better than what made it into the actual movie.
Palpatine’s malevolent sharpness has Mace on the back foot
Crazyy cool, thanks for uploading Nick 🤘🤘
Thanks again master, for sharing such knowledge with us.
This actor plays mace is actually playing Dooku in test fights.
This stuff is gold. Greetings from Worthing nick
I always love that move at 0:32.
Edited: The stuntman has the force, y'all. Timestamp is 0:58.
The strike at :52, that is in the movie but you dont see Mace get injured in the leg. And though you dont see him get injured, there is a specific sound effect when Palpatine slashes down towards Mace. Always confuses me
Yes more content your the best Gilard!!!!!!
This fight scene actually makes it look better because it was really quick so even skilled jedi could be easily beaten.
In the actual duel they seem evenly matched and it is ambiguous whether Palpatine threw the fight. Here, Palpatine is clearly superior and likely did throw the fight.
Incredible choreography and performance 🙂👍
EPIC! Great Work, Nick and Stunt Team!
What a shame this was cut, so much better
We need an updated PT with these extended saber battles added back in , updated effects, and maybe even new dialogue scenes (with deepfake tech nowadays, they could easily de-age a lot of the PT actors).
What is the stuntman playing Palpatine wearing? Give me the name of the clothes!
Ayyy Kit Fisto survived alittle longer!!! Still waiting on justice for our boy!!
I wish we had this fight instead. Remarkable.
Amazing! Thanks for sharing!
That's actually cool to see how the fight would have been
Having Mace continue fighting after multiple saber wounds would have made him even more badass somehow
Ya nick...I wish all your work was shot like this or at least all in the films
Do you have a anakin vs cin drallig test that we could see?
If it hadn't been for the editing when the fight begins, it would have looked much better
What have you done Geaorge ? Now we need a Special Edition of prequels to fix them. Such a waste of great fight choreography. Well just a few years and Fan edits /* films will be the same production level quality as movies today.
I like what we got but man is this impressive.
I really wish this is what we got in the film.
