I wonder how you think he approached it from a theory standpoint?
My attempt at analysing it is below
Seems like he moves from
Db minor key (Dbminor9) to C major 6 diminished key (could look at it as down a half step and also as being in the diminished family as Gb which is a 4th of Db) to Bminor9 (again, down a half step / part of Gb's key) to E13 (still in the Gb key and can also be seen as part of the Bminor6diminished scale with E in the left hand and Bminor 6 (and its scale variants in the right hand - E in the left hand with B mino 6 in the right gives an E dom7/9 chord and this is a nice move....) to Amaj9 (in the Gbminor key and also the Dbminor key) to Ebminor11 (in the same diminished family as Gb minor key and also in the Db minor diminished 6 key) to Abaug 7 #9 (in the E major diminished 6 key) to Dbminor again
my conclusion from analysing this is diminished families and movements are essential for getting movements like Dbminor9 down to Caug9
