    There's a reason why there was a warning why you should not update the bios to that version if you have a pinnacle ridge cpu (ryzen 2000 series) because the latest bios removes support for those cpus so it can add ryzen 5000 support, try a ryzen 3000 cpu (not apu since their based on pinnacle ridge) and see if it posts with that

      this^^^. also in defense of the board there are a lot of boards from other brands that dont have flashback or dual bios either. I own 2 steel legend boards and i absolutely love them. Also i always make sure my board is going to support the cpu i buy b4 i buy them and i don't flash any bios that the support page warns you against. I feel like people would have issue's a lot less of the time if they just did their due diligence and bought compatible parts and didnt try to install the wrong bio's updates for.
      I'm not arguing against extra features like flashback or dual bios im just saying its not just an ASROCK thing. I have asus b450 boards that also don't have these features and honestly my asus boards die much more often which is why i go with asrock. I love asrock because for what you pay you get a good amount of features and it doesn't look like shit like some other branded boards out there.

    • @brianm.595
      @brianm.595 3 года назад +6

      @@kotaspremiere2931 it varies by model honestly b450 is low tier and b450m is probably even more stripped down... for the form factor.. you are totally correct you get what you pay for. something like dual bios i would imagine is not common until midrange plus. It used to only be on overclocking focused boards. Just for fun, I have an as rock am3+ or whatever motherboard that still works great however it remains the only motherboard I have ever failed a bios update on... had to pop the chip out and order a new one since I couldn't find anyone to flash it nearby.

    • @kotaspremiere2931
      @kotaspremiere2931 3 года назад +2

      @@brianm.595 yes, and i would also like to point out that we are talking about one persons experience. Ive had shittier experiences with my gigabyte pro wifi and my rog strix board than my steel legend boards and i would say thats my experience. My arguement here is that just because one person has a bad experience with something doesn't mean the whole brand is bad in comparison to others. You have to consider pricepoint to feature set to quality among other brands and many other factors. sample size matters a lot in these situations as well.
      If you do the research you will actually see that FOR the form factor and price the b450m steel legend is actually a very good choice. You get a lot of good things in that formfactor for that price in comparison to other choices in that tier. Im not saying other brands are trash and i would like to point out that i agree with what you say so i guess im just trying to further point out how i feel about the situation. I just want to express that all brands have their own pros and cons at certain price ranges and i think the steel legend line is popular for a reason which can be easily discovered through reviews and feedback all over google and places like newegg or forums. Not having dual bios on these lower end boards shouldn't be an issue limited to a specific brand when other brands do the same thing.
      If dual bios is so cheap to put on a board then we should be arguing that it should be on ALL branded boards at the low tier range.

If you followed the *before updating this bios, please also read the description in the previous BIOS version* back far enough you'll see it will say update to this bios before updating to the most recent one.

      CH341A with a 1.8v adapter (no voltage mod needed since the adapter takes care of the design flaw in the 341a in which it pumps 5v through the data lines) I've never had to do it myself but its not too bad with a portable linux distro or there is a windows version that's a little harder to find. if it has Intel lan you may have to do some editing of the bios file the manufacturer gives you and you will loose the serial number that is stored in the bios as well in some cases.

      RTFM also applies to BIOS updates. I mean, it's highlighted on the website and every release is littered with warnings. Can't fault ASRock for self-negligance.
      I once let a person do three BIOS updates in succession just to be safe, even if two might have sufficed. Better to wait/read a few minutes than brick your board.

    • @Ironbuket
      @Ironbuket 3 года назад

      So he just ignored the multiple warnings and installed the latest bios... Well that's totally his fault. I dont think this is an asrock only issue? I recall when they started adding support for the extra CPUs it depended on if there was room to add the new CPU IDs to the bios or not. Some boards had room in their bios to keep the old and add the new, but you would think someone that fixed PCs for a living would be aware of this issue and not make such a dumb mistake. As someone that been through the asrock bios update process I think it warns you at least 3 times during that process that you can brick your system...

    From what I understand you have to update Asrock bios' incrementally. Each update doesn't include all of the previous changes. So, for example, you might need to update from v 3.2 to v 3.5 to v 4.6 to v 5.2. I could be wrong about this but it's how Asrock's download page makes it seem, if I am wrong I would appreciate correction on this. I've upgraded the bios on numerous ASUS boards and at least one MSI and never had an issue but I'm terrified to update the bios on my wife's PC because of the info I see on Asrock's website.

    This example right here, is exactly why JayzTwoCents made his video about motherboard features that need to be in the board, regardless of what "level" of board it is. I mean, my piece of advice is, will be the same as Jay's, don't update your bios, unless you have that safety net of a dual bios, or a flashback switch. If you're in Timmy Joe's position, just don't do it. If it means you have to buy an X570, to get that kind of feature, so you can run your Ryzen 5000, its the best way forward. If you need help, don't be afraid to ask, there are many out there that can help (though vet them first, lol).

    - No dual bios ? or bios flashback i mean i even didn't check when buying i was thinkig we were past that point and that is like standard to have bios recovery but no no flash bios power goes out motherboard is dead
    - Their page and bios support and support in general is garbage and stuff from HORRORS, in downloads section here its a bios BUT PLASE DO NOT UPDADE THE BIOS in capital letters.
    Its just weird board, from start when i unbox it i saw that motherboard and foam under board its hold down by zip ties, and i didn't received any outer sleeve of the box just inner box with Asrock logo.
    And what is funny that was my second board first one bas MSI B450 gaming pro and only 2 of four dim slots worked, so i RMA it and was forced to by Asrcok.
    Totally screwed my build 2 years ago.

    Pro Note: To really ensure you wont corrupt your BIOS Flash, use a UPS. Almost happen to me year ago were I updated my BIOS and 2 minutes later the power went out. I've been using a UPS ever since on all 3 of my PC's. And a bonus to having a UPS. When the power does go out I can still use my PC watching a movie or listen to music during power outages. We have them happen quite often where I live. So having a $150 dollar 1500VA UPS is convenient worth the money to me. Also when I was using DSL I was still able to use the interwebs for a long while during an outage since the monitor, speakers, modem and router are also connected to the UPS.

    I'm guessing I'm not gonna be first to write this but you installed what's know as "beta" bios, it removed support for all 2000 series CPU according to ASUS website, you can still use 3000 and 5000 series CPUs, if it's same as on my motherboard you can not downgrade your bios, so you are stuck with that bios(without any external tools like EEPROM).

    I just went through this with an Asus b350 Tuf gaming am4 motherboard, I replaced it with a gigabyte and tried to reflash the chip "to no avail" and am now waiting on a new bios chip to see if that fixes it, I added the serial, mac address and uuid to the new file with hex edit but it still didn't help. But be careful with a CH341A, you have to modify it because the data pins are not regulated at 3v they output at 5v which I later found out after ruining my 1.8v chip on my Asus "even though you probably shouldn't try to flash a 1.8v chip at 3v either" I would look at a EZP2019+ probably the best hope for fixing it.

    I always have my systems on a battery backup in general and although updating the bios should be fairly quick that isn't always the case. I recently updated my z490 bios to enable Resizable Bar and that bios took a long ass time, longest bios update I've ever done. I didn't time it but if I had to guess about 10 min. Most bios updates take like 2 min tops.

    Two take-aways from this:
    1. Be careful when updating BIOS on B450/X470. If you have a Zen or Zen+ CPU you might entirely remove support for those CPUs on your motherboard with the wrong BIOS version
    2. Always, always, always check memory QVL list for your specific motherboard

    I bricked my computer last week watching Netflix (it crashed made a weird sound & win 10 wouldn't load) now I'm 99% certain it's the motherboard but I don't want to spend £150 on a new B550 and then find it the CPU. It had been playing up specifically on Netflix for a while now then my USB's started playing up then it crashed. Checked the memory, GPU, and SDD's as I have spare for all these and it will not install windows it reboots any were from 8% to 70% over and over. Fortunately, I have a 10-year-old Dell XPS laptop that I'd just refurbished that has kept me going until I rebuilt my old FX 8350 and it fine but I miss my R5 3600 so much.
    I just don't know what to do I can't sell the 3600 until I know it's not broken but I'm not enthusiastic about getting another MB to find out it's the CPU at fault. Oh, and it does post fine and will boot to windows if I put in a blank SSD window's 10 build but is not stable at all and crashes quite quickly. I've bios flashbacked it and removed XMP and change the ram and it still won't run stable.
    One last thing and it didn't use to do this but no matter what bios you put in it the MSI boot picture artifacts.

    I had this same issue with my asrock aqua x570 earlier this week. did the update on the bios with a 1600 in there to get it up to date so i could add the 5950x cpu...and it tanked. Eventually had to pull the cpu, do a bios flashback...but that wouldnt work. Took me hours to figure out...the USB has to be in MBR mode, and when I would format it, it was not in MBR. Once I changed the usb over to that, it actually worked like a charm.
    TLDR - make sure the USB is in MBR before using it for bios flashback, because when you usually formalt them, they go GPT, and that WONT work with flashback

    You're correct about clearing CMOS before flashing a new one on, but I always make a backup of my profiles on the same USB stick to keep good OC's and tight memory timings etc..
    Not only does it stop conflicts within the BIOS options table, but it also frees up valuable CMOS memory because it clears all the BIOS profile, CSM(Compatibility Support Module) and TPM(Trusted Platform Module) data that can screw an OS install. I have made the mistake in the past myself....and it cost me.😒

    Use BIOS reset jumper or switch to clear BIOS settings. Remove RAM and install generic 2133MHz single module. When you swap RAM system config will have to change on boot. It could help go back to defaults if it's a problem using that specific RAM kit.
    Non-booting is not bricked.

    Just did the same thing on an old lga1155 mobo, the upgrade was definitely necessary as it was a itx board with a single pcie slot that couldn't support newer GPU's without the update. Luckily in my case, the bios chip was removable and I found a seller on Ebay that sells hundreds of older bios chip with the newest firmware for under $15. Installed it in 20 seconds and boom, brought it back to life.
    I'm sure you would've already looked into it if yours is a removable one, but as for the programming tool, I think those are around $12 on Ebay and it's definitely worth a try considering theres nothing else wrong with the board

    Hey Timmy, I did all of this last year. But as far as Gigabyte mobos, how about the Gigabyte ds3h b450... Went to build my wife a pc in April 2020. Got good deals before everything went through the roof. But one component took forever; the 3300x cpu. So over three months later, the cpu arrives and I installed it in the motherboard, and all was well for a couple hours. Everything seemed fine, but the turbo behavior seemed a bit erratic, so I figured a bios update would finish off that build nicely. Well, this gigabyte motherboard does not have dual bios, and this motherboard required removal of bios chip for programming, the chip clip would not work. So a bit of micro soldering later I had a working mother board again, but I needed to touch up the legs a bit on the bios chip. Well, this time i forgot to take out the battery for the bios. Bye bye chip. Then i bought replacement chips, only to find out the mobo is totally dead now.
    And as stupid as it sounds, I got her the gigabyte ds3h b550 mobo instead. But hey atleast this one has flash back/bios recovery features, even tho it isn't a dual bios either. The other sleeps in its box in the garage, since it was over 3 months I never could have returned it

    Been there many times.
    The one time my pc bricked bios I was able to flash through usb luckily.
    Ive had a motherboard before that had same issues and it was because of the ram not the motherboard. You totally faulted the motherboard before fully testing everything. You could have tried a different ram stick from a different pc as well.
    Sounds like you messed up with xmp(overclocking ram) and bios should have been set back to default(clear cmos). Sometimes xmp also doesn't give enough voltage for xmp speeds and needs to be manually set.

    New motherboard?? Take a picture of the eeprom chip, check it's voltage (some new eeproms are 1.85v) and then you just need a regulator, a lvl shifter, a raspberry pi and the relevant BIOS bud

    I bought an eeprom programmer from Aliexprees for cheap (10USD iirc) and it saved a few boards, you don't need to use the chinese software that it cames with, there is an open source software on Github you can use called UsbAsp-flash github.com/nofeletru/UsbAsp-flash
    Also, there is a few motherboards that on the bios chip doesn't have the legs exposed, in that case look for an SPI header, search for a pinout and connect it to the corresponding pins on the programmer. you can also use the GPIO pins on a Raspberry Pi using Flashrom.
