You are so right. The carb service kits and base plate gaskets we are getting in RSA are rubbish. I am getting some victor reinz gasket today. The service kit I bought 6 months ago and the diaphragms have perished. 😢

Thanks for your videos, really appreciate it. I had a torn base plate, bought a new on Victor Ryens Sealer. But I still have the care cut out when I do a sharp turn to the left. (like a u-turn) Bought a new fuel pump just to find it was worse real erratic idling, cheched no fuel. So we installed the original fuel pump again and it is better. The fuel separator I blew out with a compressor, but maybe I must change it and the fuel pump. Checked the distributor vacuum advanced as per your video (the pipe was perished at the back of the carburettor. Cut it and refitted. Car is better but still 1000 rev ruffness when idling. And pull away jerky .
Ok that's great .have you checked for an airleak around your servo pipe yet..(those two little ports)..and then also check on that other diaphragm which is inside that part which I blocked off on my carb..it's supposed to be for engines with Aircon...,The pipe runs from that part to the front of carb...as a test just block off the port on the carb and see if idle smooths out..I have done that...when I noticed the diaphragm in that part was torn,so I don't use that part anymore ..I'm not even sure what the specific name for it is.My reasoning is if the diaphragm is buggered / torn then it will cause un- metered air to go into the carb fuel mix and that leans it out causing an uneven idle..
Great video.. A bit more info on crank and distributer timing, i always line the marks up and move the dizzy on the mark to plug 1.. never used a timing light and seems to be running fine. Sometimes bother me if its not right. Then say rather not interfere with what's not broken .

may I please be in contact with you. I've got a golf 1.4i that's got a rev/idle issue. When it turn it on the revs go up to 1200pm without any acceleration. When I drive it and I press down the clutch the car revs itself. I've changed the map sensor as well as clean throttle body with carb cleaner and the problem still is persistent

My golf mk1 cuts off when the rev count is below 10rpm I even replaced the cut off valve still the same problem applies, even when driving sometimes it just cuts off and there is no idling when is cold only when the car gets warm
Question, now what about fuel injection? if I start my car it idles, when I reserve out my driveway and take my foot off the accelerator it dies. when I come to stop and take my off the accelerator to gear down, it switches off.
Hi! My Golf mk1 1.6 with a Keihin carb has a very rough idle. The car sometimes idles at 2000 rpm and sometimes barely idles. When it runs it runs fine. When I was out driving the other day the car suddenly just lost power and wouldn't start. When I turn the ignition the car ignites for a brief second then dies. Sometimes it keeps running with very precise throttle but then dies when in gear trying to drive away. Any advice on what could be causing this issue? Very thankful for help!

@@Rmndb hi, I don't know if you've fixed the issue but it sounds to me your pump is bad My car does the same thing when it runs out of fuel, so my best guess is the cheap pump you got is faulty..
Could be one of many things ..could be clogged up airfilter,or flat spot on carb,or running too rich..like I say ..could be one of many things...best to take it to mechanic for assessment

Hi guys... So my son has mk1 automatic 1600. Problem we have occasionally is that starting up we would need to swing the starter a few seconds before the engine fires up. Other times we litterally just tap the key once and she fires up. What could cause this?
It can be a fueling issue. The accelerator pump in particular. It maybe doesn't give u that bit of squirt of fuel into the throat, when u pump the pedal, just before u swing. With engine off, Look down the throat of carb while u pull on the accelerator cable.. It should give a nice squirt of fuel down the throat of carb. Also could be even ignition timing not set to spec. Have that checked too

Hi. The most common reason for this is due to the idle cut off valve situated at back of carb to be faulty. Or your earth strap is not connected.. Usually connects from carb to the tapper cover. Have checked on these yet?

If u have a distributor with a vacuum advance attached.,you need to have the thin pipe attached from the Vacuum Advance Unit to the back of the carb.. There is a port where it attaches to

Hey there.. Is the weather very cold in the Mornings on your side. If so use some Q20. Spray some in your distributor, and plugs, and also some in the coil, and coil wire connection... Have a look at my video.. On my channel "Cold start Solution"...

Overfueling can be due to a fuel pump, or the float level in carb needs adjustment .. Pre ignition is timing related.Have you set the ignition timing with a timing light
Hi, thanks for all these video's, they help a lot. I have a vw baja with a twirnport engine but they fitted a Golf carb. When I start her in the morning she idle's perfectly. If I leave she goes fine until it seems the engine heats up or I go uphill she hesitates and eventually I cant go further. Do you have any advice, what can cause this? I've checked vacuum leaks, fuel lines, I must me missing something. Thanks.
Hi thanks.. Check fuel pump, could possibly be fuel starvation . That's a typical symptom. And, if u have a fuel separator on,... They tend to clogg up, or the heat of engine causes fuel to boil, etc etc. But first do a check on your fuel pump. I have a video on fuel pumps, and fuel starvation .. Not sure if you have viewed that yet.. Once I experienced that fuel starvation issue, until I eventually Checked my fuel pump and it was pumping erratically and weak.. And it was a new pump. Obviously bad quality. After I changed pump, problem was solved

Sounds like it could be with your earth strap running from the carb to the cylinder head that could be loose. I'm assuming its a carb model...... Also check if your idle cut off valve is properly connected at rear of the carb....

You need to check on the temperature sensor ...it may need to be replaced ..or just clean it up .could be rust and corrosion

My polo classic is converted to a curbarator and the idle cut off valve is not connected and i don't know were to connect it please help

Check your carb base plate ,coukd be sucking in air .or for air leaks around pipe attached to brake booster ..

Sorry I meant to say slot no. 17 in your fuse box, and it's a 10 fuse

Hi i had the same problem can be the base plate and could be something els, just move the carb side to sideand check on both sides for cracks.

Sounds like it could be with your earth strap running from the carb to the cylinder head that could be loose. I'm assuming its a carb model...... Also check if your idle cut off valve is properly connected at rear of the carb....
