PLAYA DEL CARMEN BEACH SEAWEED UPDATE - DON'T COME NOW! WHEN TO COME AND WHEN NOT TO COME

  • This video will take you to sunrise on the Famous Playa Del Carmen Beach in Mexico and provide information and an update on the seaweed situation. The seaweed is here earlier and worse this year. Tourism and real estate is showing a decline because of the amount of seaweed.
The water has turned brown and many will no longer swim here.
If I come back next year, the only months I would come here are December, January and maybe February because the beaches will be clean. The beaches will be full of seaweed all the other months.
Playa del Carmen is a coastal resort town in Mexico, along the Yucatán Peninsula's Riviera Maya strip of Caribbean shoreline. In the state of Quintana Roo, it’s known for its palm-lined beaches and coral reefs.
The coastal areas of Quintana Roo in Mexico are facing a large influx of sargassum, a type of brown seaweed, in 2023. The seaweed is expected to primarily impact the coastlines of Playa del Carmen and Puerto Morelos.
Esteban Amaro Mauricio, head of the Sargasso Monitoring Network of Quintana Roo, has said that the seaweed season in Playa del Carmen has increased by at least two months this year due to the presence of large "islands" of seaweed in the Caribbean Sea. This influx is expected to have a moderate to strong effect on the coasts of several areas in Quintana Roo. Efforts are being made to remove the seaweed and predict its movements through monitoring.

@@leonardsheatravel Their statement of "April to August" is based on what was once
a "predictable" sargassum season & BEFORE the massive, prolific growth of this
      plant in the mid-Atlantic.
For these authorities to make such statements is pure propaganda. They're trying to keep the tourism-driven economy from crashing. The economy of The Caribbean Region is still recovering from the COVID shut-down.
During the entire year of 2022, there was no significant loss in tonnage of sargassum in the mid-Atlantic. In fact, during December 2022 & January 2023 it doubled in size. Historically, sargassum does NOT grow during these 2 Winter months.
Additionally, beaches in The Caribbean Region received large amounts of sargassum during every month of 2022.
So, there is no reason to believe that after August 2023 there will be less sargassum on the beaches. In reality, this serious issue will continue for the foreseeable future. Anyone who believes otherwise...including authorities in the region...is whistling in the graveyard.
Although, an active storm//hurricane season could bring some "temporary" relief.
      Best regards from Yucatan,
      Ben

@@leonardsheatravel Hello Leonard & THANKS for all your efforts to inform people.
I've explained in my previous comments, sargassum on beaches in The Caribbean Region is now a year-round issue. There's no longer a predictable sargassum season.
Due to agricultural practices of South America & the warming Atlantic Ocean, sargassum now grows...in massive quantity...year-round in The midAtlantic Ocean. Yes, there will be "a few" short periods during the year when less quantity invades beaches of The Caribbean. But it will be a rare site to see a sargassum-free beach. Until there's an organized effort to kill the massive growth of sargassum while it's in the open sea, beaches of The Caribbean Region will continue to be inundated.
The weather & regional currents determine which beaches receive the most. But all beaches in this region will be affected year-round. An active hurricane season will provide "temporary" relief. BUT...who hopes for a hurricane?
The past 2 years have proven that waiting until it arrives at the shore & expecting manual labor to clean the inundation from the beaches & dispose of millions of
tons of sargassum is ineffective. As well as an effort of futility.
Sargassum contains toxic chemicals. Now, there are serious environmental issues created by "dumping" millions of tons of rotting sargassum on the land.
As you know, the economy of the entire Caribbean is tourist driven. So, do not expect
any government agency to provide any truth about how truly bad this issue is.
      Best regards from Yucatan,
      Ben
