- Do electric cars with heat pumps really need up to 50 % less energy in cold weather? If you are thinking about buying an EV, I'd recommend checking, if it has a heat pump that not only does cabin heating, but also does battery management. I look at why heat pumps in electric vehicles have come a long way. My Model 3 does not have as steep a change in range as my i3. One morning last week, it was chilly, and the i3 said 99 miles. An few hours later, the temperature had risen to 10 Celsius, and the i3 changed to 138 miles, and this was after I'd done the school run.
Thank you for sharing! I'm curious about statistics on this, which I can't find a lot of. I think despite the late shift from PTC to heat pumps in 2021, Tesla has always had really good battery temperature management. 🙏

Thanks for that video! A video about the climate control heatpump and whyit is even an option to not use this already existink piece of kit to teat the cabin would be great. this is the "Why dont they just..." question in my mind on this topic everytimes.

Thanks for pointing out the importance of heat pumps in BEVs. I just hope that nobody will be misled to believe that the existence of a heat pump makes a Tesla a good car. I bought a Model 3 two years ago, and it's the worst investment I've ever made. The lack of Apple CarPlay and the insane amount of software bugs in Tesla's system regularly infuriates me. I'll get rid of the Tesla as soon as the new car I want will be available in a few weeks.

They are becoming affordable with the rebates. I actually like my 2012 Nissan Leaf better than our 2022 Tesla Model Y. Great value for the price. ;-)
Considering that Tesla's 2nd largest market from the very early days of the Model S was Norway, the fact they took so long to implement a heat pump is puzzling.
They used PTC heaters instead until 2021. Heat pumps are of course much better than radiators. There is a lot of design that goes into good battery temperature management.
@@NetZeroTech Yes but PTC heating diminshes range and if you start off with a cold battery on a cold day it's a double whammy as you need to warm up the battery and the cabin or, at the very least, the driver's seat, at the same time.
Waiting until 2021, by which point Model S was nearly 10 years old was astonishing for a car in the premium / luxury segment.
Even more so when Elon made such a big deal about how much better Tesla air filtration is than the competition, with the intro of BioWeapon Defense Mode - *in 2016*
Indeed. Great points. They paved the way working with the legislation to get EVs on the road, however. So, they have done some heavy-lifting pioneer work, too.
Thanks, Katha, my 2024 Ioniq 6 has a heat pump (bought for 38K in Winston-Salem, North Carolina USA). To my knowledge, heat pumps are standard as of 2023 on Ioniq 5 and 6. Our Rivian R1T does not have a heat pump.

@@NetZeroTech Yes, I LOVE my Ioniq 6. Yes, supposedly Rivians are going to have heat pumps in the future. The heat pump in my Ioniq 6 does take up the whole frunk pretty much but I don't mind. That could bother some buyers because North Carolina is mostly a warm climate.

@@NetZeroTech When Rivian's get a heat pump, their frunk space will be much reduced. That is a trade off but worth it to me.
Surely you're aware that an air conditioner is a heat pump, so any vehicle, electric or not, with AC, has all the necessary components to heat the cabin without resistive heating or waste heat from combustion. The only difference is in the valving and controls.
Absolutely. They've had a one way heat pump to cool the cabin. Now, they are using heat pumps to manage the battery temperature as well. Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts. 😀
It would be reasonable, then, to conclude, where a heat pump is unavailable, that vehicle makers are being especially lazy. Where it's available at additional cost, it would appear to be a basic money-grab.

@@NetZeroTech voice is noise but the video with crucial info ... of good worth...i am mechanical engineer and love to see that heat pump have still great use in ev....again heat pump do very little work at about -20 degree air temperature.. and the compressor is a great difficulty ...but tesla and other ev taking it seriously...nice....thanks for the video...
