      @Kenny Kovalski Ehhh, i mean, it screwed up the show a little with the thing taking billions of years, meaning it was most of his life. Like, how would he remember anything before that at that point? Other than that tho, it's a fantastic episode.

      @@mv9370 It was obvious in the episode that the Doctor can't remember events previous to his 'deaths', so he only remembers the last few days - his current 'rejuvination'

      My life is [REDACTED] sorta, but it's implied when he says "that's what I remember!!!" that he remembers his past selves followed by "always then" cementing that fact and you may be thinking "but perhaps he only remembers loosely or only that moment" but I believe he says something along the lines of "you don't understand, clara, I remember it all" HOWEVER time lords with enough exposure to the time vortex can probably remember more or something

      @@mv9370 You may have missed this, but the entire thing takes place in the confessional dial, which had been explained as a tool for the timelords to give their last confession before being uploaded into the matrix (to find peace). You aren’t supposed to remember the events, but Rassilion turned it into a torture chamber and 12 ends up remembering everything right when he gets at the final door and is one confession away from freedom. I’m sure timelord memory can account for billions of years (they can literally live forever considering the high council can grant more regenerations). It also isn’t expanded upon whether the Doctor remembered EVERYTHING or just his death and that he’s been doing that for so long. Really, I think thats fine. A story like heaven sent can bog itself up getting caught up in the details. We know enough for the story and it works.

      @@mv9370 yeah wait what haha? He didn't experience all 4.5 billion years, each new day was reset so he only remembers the final day where he escaped. He knows it had been that long but isn't like groundhog day where he consciously lived through each day
      It's vaguely implied in his mental construct he has an idea he's been in the loop and might somewhat remember, but still basically just the single day for him
      But I don't think it breaks anything I mean each loop it's like he just teleported in.
      Also it's all taking place inside the dial.
      Idk I think it's an amazing detail in for his character that he went through all that for literally as long as the Earth haha, exactly 4.5 billion years

    Peter Capaldi was born to be the Doctor and that's not an exaggeration in the slightest. His doctor went from being cold, abrasive and Machiavellian to the point it would make his 7th incarnation blush to a genuinely warm, oddly human and profoundly honest character. See you around Capaldi and good luck Jodie, you have some big shoes to fill.

    Interestingly enough, my thoughts on series 8 and 10 are completely reversed from yours. I find Series 8 to be a mixed bag with no idea what they want the Doctor to be from episode to episode, whereas series 10 is a nicely self contained collection of fun adventures with a criminally underrated companion, and finally, finally, finally, a definitive characterization for the twelfth Doctor, exemplified by his simple yet effective motto, "Do it because it's kind."
    Also, it has what is easily my favorite season finale since the Tennant Era. It's just brilliant in my eyes and is my favorite season of Capaldi's run.

      Season 8 also had the disadvantage of relying heavily on the completely chemistry-less relationship of Clara and Danny Pink. Conceptually it could've worked, but did anyone genuinely buy for a second that those two were deeply in love?
      P.S. It wasn't that the writers had no idea who they wanted the Doctor to be *The new Doctor* had no idea who he was yet. Twelve struggled with that question for the whole of season 8 and it wasn't until the season finale that he finally came to terms with his new persona and realised _"I'm not a good man! I'm not a bad man! I'm not a hero! I'm not a President! And no, I'm not an officer! You know who I am? I am an idiot with a box and a screwdriver, passing through, helping out. I thought you were going to be so anti-Clara and it's refreshing to hear someone actually get her. She didn't love the doctor, she didn't want to get in his pants, she wanted to BE him. And that's awesome. No more making the Doctor into some kind of messiah guy, she and him were bad for each other and that was so refreshing to watch after years of the friends just falling in love with him. I suspect a lot of the people who don't like Twelve dropped out part way through season 8 while the show was (by design) still nailing the character down. That season is about exploring this new incarnation of the Doctor and both he and his companion trying to work out who he is now. And he's pretty unlikeable at times during this period. I can see a number of fans being turned off and quitting the show when he callously abandoned a companion in "Kill the Moon", for example.

    Also in defense of "Smile"- the doctor couldn't know if reset button would fix the problem and the killing spree will not resurface again in the future. He saw the effect of one robot death on another, they showed their anger and confusion just like any other species when "one of them" died. Only then he was sure he could just erase all the memory of "keep humans happy" regime and let them be like a new species, in other words "a reset button". I know this is my excuse and the episode could've explained it better.

      I love Bill's personality, but as the series progressed she began to lose some of it which is a shame. What I loved about Bill was that after classic who we finally got that purely inquisitive companion again and the Doctor was in a teacher role (I wish that had been expanded on). Nardole was just an amazing foil to that and showed us the other side of 12 in series 10. Missy being part of the TARDIS crew (for like 10 seconds) was just a straight up wet dream for me. I wanted the show to continue in that direction from series 10 (and at least 1 more series of bill, nardole, and missy with 12). I definitely preferred them to 2.5 series of Clara being the ONLY companion. 12’s character hit its peak for me at the end of hell bent when he got in the TARDIS, got his sonic, and moved on from clara (not the best episode, but the beginning of the Doctor at his peak). The following series 9 specials and series 10 was just my favorite who era.

    Peter Capaldi was escellent as the Doctor. I think that when 'youngsters' go back in times to come to revisit his stories, having gained their own sense of time passing and experiences that come with it, they'll see he really developed the character of our so-loved champion. Flatline was a personal favourite, alond with his final three in which the Master/Missy also expresses how life can change you and for the better. Jon Pertwee was my Doctor, but Matt Smith and Capaldi under Moffat gave us a real depth that a kids show often can only dream about.

    Finally, you updated it. I like the first iteration, but the second fits perfectly. I agree with Sleep no More, Hell Bent and The Lie of the Land aka The Monks Cop Out ( seriously wrecked the end of the Trilogy ), and In the Forest of the Night ( blows raspberries ) as my least favorites. I'm sure Jodie Whittaker will do fine as the 13th Doctor later this year, but believe me, Capaldi will be a tough act to follow, he is that dang excellent, and I love it. Great video update, you made my evening, thank you!!!

    Been Rewatching Capaldi recently - the guy was absolutely stellar. Ive maintained the run from Eccleston to Capaldi (9,10,11 and 12) is possibly the strongest back to back run of actors the show ever had and Capaldi still shines. He was alien, ancient, wise, eccentric, intelligent and commanding. He was something super special to the show and Series 9 and 10 are among my favourites of all time. I still miss 12 to this dau

Now, there’s never been a bad performance put to the Doctor, even Colin Baker has some stand-out moments where the script actually allowed him to act.

    i have lots of problems with moffat's writing during the capaldi era, but what you say at the start of this episode is so true and i think something to take note of for all future incarnations of the doctor.
    even when the writing's at its worst, capaldi STILL shines as this terrific, entertaining, and enigmatic figure. he almost single-handedly carried me through his time on the show with his engaging and impactful performance & personality; he needs to be utterly commended for being magnificent enough to transcend everything else that was wrong with the show at the time.

    In my opinion, the seasons of Peter Capaldi’s Doctor got better each time, with 8 being not very good and 10 being really great and 9 somewhere in the middle. I think this is probably because I really enjoyed the storylines in 10, and I didn’t care so much about the (admittedly lacking) character development.
    I guess that’s just how the series connected with me personally

    I have to disagree with the Series 7 and "Hell Bent" hate. I get the disappointment of Gallifrey not being as big a deal in that episode as it could've been, but it gave Clara an infinitely superior ending.
    I'm glad we can agree she's the best companion and that Capaldi's two series with her are better than the "meh" Series 10, though :)

    • @gryotharian
      @gryotharian 5 лет назад

      As much as we didn't want Clara to die, I don't think her ending after hell bent was superior, it kinda just showed Moffat has a problem killing characters, ironically, since what i've seen the fans hate him for is being to eager to kill characters. but between reviving Clara 2 episodes after a dramatic and final feeling death, and the thing they pulled with Bill in The Doctor Falls, he really can't give a companion a solid ending. That being said, I still do really enjoy his run. Not quite as much as RTD, but pretty close.

    • @gerryandersonisbest
      @gerryandersonisbest 5 лет назад +1

      @@gryotharian Oh yeah, don't get me wrong, Moffat had his faults and I totally get why a lot of people prefer FTR, I just never felt that that the "reckless" thing ever really suited Clara, so having that be such a big part of her demise, coupled with what I feel are some pretty serious plot holes, irked me to say the least.
      The other factor for me is that HB seems to be the real ending he had planned all along, so it seems like a stupid decision to me to kill her off in a fake ending only to bring her back right at the end for the real one. They shouldn't have bothered with FTR and just done the HB version.
      I totally get where you're coming from, though. Also it's nice to see someone else who actually likes Davies AND Moffat, rather than picking one and throwing rocks at anyone who likes the other :)

    How you feel about 12 is how I feel about 10. End of Time and even just the RTD era as a whole is something else to me. It's interesting to hear another, albeit different take on Who. I like hearing other points even if I don't neccissarily agree with them. It also may be a slightly colored opinion, as I do have a friend who I chat with about Who quite regularly with who hates everything Moffat wrote since 2011, but hey. What do I know? Though I will say when I write stories, I do write them more like RTD would even though they are certainly in my own style.

  • @irrevenant3
    @irrevenant3 5 лет назад +1

    I have to disagree about Bill not blossoming into a good developed character. I think we got basically as good a feel for Bill as a character as we did any of the companions in their first season. She was familiar with scifi and tended to refer to their adventures through that lens. She was a companion with a very practical perspective. She asked things like why are the TARDIS seats so far away from the console. And rather than the usual "It's bigger on the inside!" reaction she had the much more natural initial response of assuming the doors led to a knock-through. She was also the first person to say that the TARDIS looks like a really posh kitchen - which it really kinda does. xD
    The Doctor was attracted to Bill because when she didn't know something she smiled rather than frowned. She adored the Doctor but was kind of embarrassed by him socially. She tended to just blurt things out rather than thinking it through. Even when they were travelling through time and space together, she continued to view the Doctor as her university professor and refer to him in that context. And she was a young gay woman who was perfectly comfortable with that - though that was really a much smaller part of her character than many people focused on.
    I've seen people complain about Bill's final words to the Doctor: _"You know how I'm usually all about women and, and kind of people my own age?", "Yeah?", "Glad you knew that"._ I thought they were perfect and very in character. The subtext to that comment was "You are neither of those things and you are the most amazing person I have ever met".
    The Doctor took a young, working class university student who had been mostly about university and socialising with other young people and opened up the entire universe to her. He was responsible for making her more than what she had "usually been all about". Bill was never going to be able to say all that eloquently and burying it in a jocular remark instead was very her style.
    Moffat can be very bombastic in his writing, and often that works brilliantly - but this was a wonderfully understated and natural bit of dialogue and it's a shame that some people just see it as "Bill constantly shoving it down our throats that she's gay".

    5. Flatline (Awesome monster design, really well done stand alone episode)
    4.Dark Water/Death in Heaven (I know it definitely had it's issues, but I still loved it)
    3. Magician's Apprentice/Witch's Familiar (I just really like Missy ok? And seeing the classic daleks)
    2. Heaven Sent (Come on. Speaks for itself.)
    1. World Enough and Time/The Doctor Falls (My favorite DW story to date, probably some of my favorite episodes of TV in general, I had two problems, the first was the shit they pulled with Bill at the end, there was no reason for that other than Moffat not wanting to properly kill off companions, and the second was THEY SPOILED THE WHOLE EPISODE WITH THE SEASON TRAILER)
    For Worst:
    5. Husbands of River song (Had it's good moments, and was a good way to close up river's arc, but the main plot of the episode with the cyborg dude was bland and pointless as all hell)
    4. Into the forest of night. (silly and forgettable, and didn't make any sense)
    3. The Woman Who Lived (I really hated ashildr already, adding space furries did not help)
    2. The Eaters of light (started off promising, With scotland and romans and alternate universes, but left off just confusing and unexplained)
    1. Sleep no More (absolute dumpster fire. who let this get past BBC.)

  • @737Wow
    @737Wow 5 лет назад +1

    In my reality, there was another season in between 9 and 10. After Heaven Sent and Hell Bent. A whole season is dedicated to the return of Gallifrey. A Time Travelling Bonnie & Clyde Season where River Song was Capaldi companion for a few early episodes with Nardole and where The Time Lords have issued a wanted bounty on The Doctor who is accused of being the infamous Valeyard after his actions of saving Clara. A season where Missy is hunting the two time travelling lovebirds and ends with an alternate death of River Song in the Tardis and where The Doctor was sent to the courts of the Time Lords as how the 6th Doctor have done. It dedicates the second half of the season on the Time War and The Day of The Doctor, with special cameos from previous Doctors and companions to testify The Doctor's innocence and prove that his reincarnation isnt The Valeyard with The Face of Boa being the ultimate callback. It ends with revealing that the real Valeyard was a clone of him that Missy has used and alter to unleashed chaos in the universe and dedicates a whole episode where Capaldi (Doctor) fights Capaldi (Valeyard). At the end of the season, Missy was sentenced to death as seen in season 10 and locked away for the now cleared of charges and celebrated hero, Capaldi who also helped restored River Song's death as well with a little help of an impossible girl. The Doctor then took up the position of professor at Bill's university and the rest of it was pretty much the same with more focus on Bill, Nardole and The Doc trying to stop The Valeyard with some help from a rehabilitated Missy that also ends with the death of Bill. Missy of course double cross them with the help of the Master and helps The Valeyard in his evil plans. Ends with an epic self sacrifice from The Doctor to end the Valeyard. Final christmas and regeneration episode is pretty much the same.

"Lie of the Land" spent half the episode waffling around (though Missy's revelation that the only known way to defeat the Monks was to murder Bill *was* a nice twist) then defeated the Monks with a convenient deus ex machina. It was always going to be challenging living up to that buildup, but Lie of the Land didn't even try. It approaches "The Power of Three" levels of pulling unconvincing last-minute solutions out of its butt.
      P.S. Kill the Moon is also bad, and actually for similar reasons - it made out like there was a really difficult choice to made with no easy solutions then went "just kidding!" at the end and undermined it all. -_-

By the time Capaldi came around Moffat felt like he had mostly checked out on the show and wanted to focus on making Sherlock properly bad, and Capaldi was left with substandard material. Even so, he made the words he was handed stand out, which hits me right in the heart since if he had been handed the material RTD could write... imagine the heights he'd have reached.
