      @@ShawnBrockMusic yeah most people will never play a pre war martin . I feel lucky to have played on a few . My cousin has one of the largest private collections . He has one that's from 1836 or 37 that still has gut strings . But he gets hooked up bc he is one of Martin's signature artist. My 65 d 28 is the nicest guitar I own tho.

      @@danielmims8467 Brother it sounds like you have one that shouldn’t be taking a backseat to just about anything. Look on the bright side, at least when you don’t own a vintage collection, you don’t have to worry about The insurance, the possibility of theft or damage, and so on; that’s what I keep telling myself at least 😂

      @@ShawnBrockMusic lol for sure or worry about humidifier a whole room . I don't know how much I would play a pre war . Some people tour with those things which is crazy . At least with my d28 it's not like that but it's in great condition with a little wear on the pick guard and sound hole but it is one of the last production ones with Brazil rosewood. I'm going to be playing on a few pre war ones when I goto Nashville next week. Anyways love your channel. Cheers

    Hello Shawn, what kind of strings did you have on this one when you recorded it? Apologies if I missed that info in there somewhere.
    Thanks for the great video and wow - what an amazing guitar. Dale sure does know how to pick them. I’ve bought a couple of Martins from him, and he bought one from me that you actually featured on here earlier this year. It was a Custom Shop D45 with Adi / Madagascar.

      Man I remember that 45, that was a beautiful beautiful instrument! I see you have good taste lol. This was strung with D’Addario XS PB medium; 99% of the time that’s what I put on them, just to help make a more fair comparison between the instruments. you never know, we could get a crack at one of these old ones, the Powerball isn’t the only option, there is always the mega millions lol.

      Well, I ain’t saying they are the best strings to use on it, but on all of these videos, or almost all, I string the guitars with D’Addario XS 13-56 phosphor bronze. that is what was on this one as well. I usually only detour if it is a smaller body, and older instrument.

    • @ShawnBrockMusic
      @ShawnBrockMusic  2 года назад +1

      I appreciate it, but there is nothing that I can do that won’t cause some other problem. My options are to use a vocal microphone as well, which would also pick up the guitar, and that would make the sound of the guitar not be as direct. I won’t do that, because the video is to highlight the guitar. other options would bring forth more work, and I’m just not willing to do more. although I have considered doing videos like most of the shops, and making them about two minutes long and not saying a word. ☺️

    You're right about the highs: sweet and rounded off. Highs that cut without stabbing your ear drums or sounding chirpy with a capo. This is one of the more balanced 30's D-28s I've heard. They all sound fantastic but the bass is not as deep and huge on this one.

    I have to ask. After playing so many of these pre war guitars, do they seem "normal" instead of "exceptional" now? All I know is this one stands well above the rest I've heard you play, and I usually gravitate towards mahogany!

    • @ShawnBrockMusic
      @ShawnBrockMusic  2 года назад +2

      Yeah, I have played various prewars for about 25 years or so, so it does seem like a fairly normal occurrence. Having said that, while they are definitely special, and I am anxious to play one of them at any time, it is all full of hype. I can remember win very clean examples we’re going for $10,000, and were pretty obtainable, and I passed on them then, and reckon I will continue to pass on them in the future. looking back, I definitely would have invested in collecting, just to make money, but I have never found it to be very practical to own something like that as a musician. They don’t stand up to the rigors of the road well, and that alone always made them impractical for me. So while they are special, I think they are more special for collecting than actual use.

    Great sounding D28. Huge tone, resonance, depth, fullness, richness. It's clarity,superior balance, dryness and resonance showcases the 34 to mid 38 Martin D28 with the F.S. top bracing and the full size neck profile with the 1-3/4" nut width. The sound produced using a capo here is extraordinary. Shawn, what flat pick were you using here? Is the nut and saddle Ivory or replacement bone?

    Awesome video & playing as always Shawn!!!!!!! I don't even have adequate words to express how rare it is to be able to see, much less play, a dreadnaught Martin from 1935!!!!!!! One in that condition just exponentially adds to the rarity of the occasion!!!!!!! A video or the best recording equipment available, can't accurately describe the tonal characteristics of such a guitar. It has to be experienced first hand to fully take it in. I've played music for almost 30 years now, & if I live to see another 30, I'll probably never have the opportunity to play a 1935 Martin D-28.
    I wonder how close the serial # of this guitar is to Tony Rice's 1935 D-28, formerly owned by Clarence White & affectionately known as "The Antique"?

    • @ShawnBrockMusic
      @ShawnBrockMusic  2 года назад +2

      I appreciate it brother as always! Yeah, this is by far the cleanest 35 that I have seen, and it has been looked at by some of the best of the best, so everything is legitimate. I kept it for a couple of days, and man it just kept getting better and better. By the time I sent it back, it was pretty unbelievable. As far as how close it is to Tony’s, it finished inspection just a couple of months after his. So, it is not close to being a concurrent serial number, but as far as how many 20eights are between his and this one, it can’t be very many, as they made either 81 or 83, depending on who you believe.
