  • LIVE COVERAGE: FL v. Anthony Todt Trial - Physical Therapist on Trial for Allegedly Murdering His Family
    Happening in Court:
    Prosecution Closing Arguments
    Defense Closing Arguments
A man is on trial for allegedly murdering his wife and kids, and killing the family dog. Anthony Todt, 44, stands trial in Osceola County, Florida. Opening statements are scheduled to begin Monday, April 11, at 9 am ET.
Todt, a physical therapist who worked in Connecticut and lived in the Sunshine State, allegedly killed wife Megan Todt, 42, as well as their three children Alec Todt, 13, Tyler Todt, 11, and Zoe Todt, 4. He even slew the family dog Breezy.
Federal authorities had been seeking him at the time, saying he charged Medicaid for unworked hours. Naturally, a fraud case pales in comparison to the grisly state prosecution for four counts of first-degree murder, and one count of cruelty to animals. With that in mind, federal prosecutors filed a motion to dismiss without prejudice because they did not want to stand in the way of Florida officials. They can refile later.
The family also faced eviction from their home in a case filed Dec. 22, 2019, just weeks before deputies found defendant Todt at the residence with the bodies.

    Anthony Todt.
Investigators say Anthony Todt confessed to the killings in interviews shortly after his arrest. Though a judge suppressed an early portion of that because a detective failed to give a proper Miranda warning, the admission of guilt is ultimately making it to trial because Todt allegedly kept on talking to authorities, repeating the confession in a follow-up interview.
Associate Medical Examiner Jennifer Nara found the deaths to be homicide, though she could not determine “the exact mechanism of death,” and had to rely on the alleged confession and other circumstances in her decision.
Defendant Todt walked back that confession. He blamed his wife for the killings in a letter to his father, according to the document obtained by The Orlando Sentinel from the prosecutor’s office.

I thought he was only looking at 2 years for the insurance fraud. I think his motivation was more the $300000 insurance policy on the wife. She moved to Florida because they were separated. These cases astound me. No one has the right to “control” others. For a man to do anything other than protect his family, is the height of cowardice and evil. Take your own life not the lives of your family, especially your children. These poor children, denied even a chance at life by the person most responsible for nurturing and protecting them. I feel so deeply sad and angry. I would have done anything to save these children had I known what was about to happen to them. As would so many others. How can we be altered to such pending crimes??

I agree with the prosecution's argument almost completely. He realized that his debts and fraud were going to destroy him and up until that point in his life he had ALWAYS had control. Control over his work, his education, his wife .. everything. He thought he was untouchable. When the FBI told him he was looking at prison time he knew his wife would divorce him and his family would leave him behind and move on. His wife who, by all accounts but his, was a wonderful mother would either take refuge with her family or find a new man who wasn't a pompous fraudulent control freak and that thought drove him insane. He saw his wife and children as his trophies for his exceptionalism and he refused to let anything take them away from him no matter what .. and this was how he chose to do it

The Medical Examiner also said after Megan's autopsy that there was nothing wrong with her heart or her liver (Tony said she had a prolapsed Mitral Valve and had medically induced hepatitis). It's possible she had a slight heart murmur (many people have them and need no medical intervention whatsoever) and it never bothered her at all. There are no photos of her looking frail at 90lbs. She may have had miscarriages, but I think the rest of Tony's story was just that.....a story.

Ps we protect ourselves by not being blind to the obvious red flags. Narcissists can be really manipulative. People can avoid them by making sure the pace of their new dating life goes organically and not rushed. Narcissists like to love bomb in order to get their prey under their thumb. If anyone is professing their love for you within a week or two or first meeting- that’s not cute, that’s terrifying. There is something wrong with them. Those who jump in head first because they think they’re falling in love within a month are the ones that end up being battered or dead wives/husbands later on.
Real love takes time to develop and authentic and healthy partners don’t rush it. My guess is that this dude had all the warning signs and his poor wife just didn’t know any better.

Ms Pernelle--if I have that name right (the chief DA) gives throughout an absolute Masters Class in how to handle a defendant who foolishly makes the decision of becoming a sworn witnesss.
Always they think themselves smarter than anyone else. Always they have a Narrative to relay which they think will prevail with the Jury. Always they are total control freaks.
This DA has every detail of the testimony and facts in evidence AT HER FINGERTIPS. Where she really shines however is the way she wrests (forcefully but somehow gently) control AWAY from Toad at every juncture. She says "OK" in an almost singsong voice as though conceding everything to him--whereas she concedes nothing. She refuses to let him ramble off into the Narrative he is DYING to relay to the Jury. She nails his BS over and over again and in so doing she incites him into more and more barely contained rage--which OBVIOSLY the jury picks up on and it DOES factor in when this Jury is deliberating and deciding, "IS this someone who could murder his entire family".
Finally in both her closings (initial and rebuttal) she sums everything up and doesn't miss a trick in her overall description of him and his conduct. She demonstrates that absolutely none of her questions and strategies during the trial were by chance. She mapped it all out to the mm and executed with perfection.

Very much so, considering my mother was a court reporter and my late father was a sheriff, which is why I got interested in trials to begin with. The original comment stated, "I don't know what charges the jury was deadlocked on." I am speculating the jury was deadlocked because the prosecutor came across as a B and they didn't want to reward her itchy behaviour by taking her side. And she did come off that way. Jurors are not computers. There are reasons both sides have to agree on who the final members of the jury are, and lawyers make billions annually for attempting to read people the right way to sway individuals in their favour before the trial even starts. How many body language RUclips channels exist at this point? I further speculate the judge knew the jurors just didn't like the prosecutor and that's why he ordered them back to deliberations instead of accepting declaring this one a mistrial. Have you served on a jury? The likability* of attorneys is a huge factor. The one I served on took ten minutes to find out we agreed the defendant was guilty and five further minutes asking the bailiff if it would be inappropriate to ask for the prosecutor's business card because she was very skilled at her job. OP asked a question, and I offered my two cents. Why was your assumption that I didn't know what I was talking about when I brought up the prosecutor to begin with and replied again after the fact stating basically everything I am stating here?

Hard to hold on to any of that through the deliberation room when it's not even brought up to boil in the courtroom. She didn'teven have confidence in last sentence: that the jury will find a guilty verdict!! She said it so fast, so mumbly, and walked swiftly away. Wow.
