      Hes wrong in many aspects 1.Ryzen have 20 cpu lanes so you can have 4x nvme pcie4 and 16x gpu 2.2080ti would be less affected by chopping pcie bandwidth than gpu with less memory 3. More flexible pcie potrs are actually advantage but it seems not for bz

      @@adamkowalczyk9791 I mean you both are wrong. Ryzen has 24 lanes so when you use the second m.2 slot that's when the GPU goes to x8.

    Gigabyte:
    B550 AORUS MASTER 16-phases[14+2] | Infineon TDA21472 70A, PWM: Infineon XDPE132G5C(16-phase), PCB: 2oz 6-Layer

      The b550 vision D vrm side heatsink is indeed flat but thick and large well there is no fins unlike the top vrm heatsink.
      BUT there is a copper heatpipe that connect this two heatsink.
      I remove mine months ago I noticed a copper pipe connecting both vrm heatsink which is good since the left heatsink has 0 fins.
      ALSO did a OC on my ryzen 3700x
      Vrm max temp is 45 degrees mostly in 41 to 42 degree but 45 degree at 12 noon and it's a tropical country but since it's December ambient temp is 29-31

    Regarding the master:
    I believe AMD 3000 series CPUs give 24 PCIe 4.0 lanes with x16 to the GPU and x4 to the chipset (which is actually PCIe 3.0?).
    The remaining 4 lanes go to to a single nvme m.2 slot. My guess is if you use any of the other 2 m.2 slots it downgrades the GPU to x8 and splits the remaining x8 between the two m.2 slots for a 2 by x4 config. So I think you get 1 m.2 for free without a bandwidth penalty, but if you use slots 2 and 3 you lose GPU bandwidth.

    • @Carrinthe
      @Carrinthe 4 года назад +1

      What I don't understand. If you're paying $280,- for a B550 master why don't you het a good x570 board around the same price like a MSI Unify and never have to bother with such compromises.

    • @ForeverDoubting
      @ForeverDoubting 4 года назад

      Ah shit. I Want multiple M.2s it's so much cleaner then 2.5 inch SSDs, ah but I guess I can use one of those PCI expansion cards on which you can mount an M.2 and it'll use that X4 dedicated to chipset right? So i can have two SSDs without fucking my GPU?

    • @Cmr2333
      @Cmr2333 4 года назад

      ForeverDoubting theoretically if current gen GPUs supported pcie 4.0 then I wouldn’t be worried about the x8 downgrade since x8 pcie 4.0 is the same bandwidth as x16 pcie 3.0, and from what I understand, even the highest end GPUs right now don’t fully use up the bandwidth of x16 pcie 3.0. If you’re using a lower end GPU you may not use up the entire x8 bandwidth anyway? If you’re adventurous, I’d first try some games or benchmarks without the extra m.2 SSDs to get a baseline, then plug in the SSDs and try the same games/benchmarks to see if there’s any major performance losses. If you find you’re happy with the built in m.2 then no need to buy the extra card. If the performance you get by using the built in m.2 is unacceptable then get the add on card for pcie. I mean, there’s no better way to find out than to try it out yourself?

      @MegaGasek 4 года назад +1

      @@rymannphilippe Well if you are oc'ing cpu or memory and something goes wrong you won't have access to an onscreen tool and keyboard input won't work, so you'll have to wait for the motherboard to fail boot a few times and then switch to the other working bios. This is frustrating because of the wasted time. I think it is just easier to remove the CMOS battery but still frustrating... I don't know, like buildzoid says this is stupid.

    Fun fact, there are some M.2 SSDs that are designed to run in PCI-E 3.0 x2, and I had a Samsung PM961 SSD that I bought off eBay that was cracked, which broke internal traces and caused it to run in 3.0 x2 rather than PCIE x4.

    At this point in time, the best Micro ATX options for a Ryzen 3950X build are looking to be ASRock's B550M Steel Legend (0I54.99$ USD) and Gigabyte's B550M Aorus Pro (0II9.99$); MSI's MAG Series B550M Mortar (0I59.99$) and Asus' TUF Gaming B550M Plus (also 0I59.99$) are a bit harder for me to justify due to a lack of VRM/MOSFET Cooling in certain areas and also for having an odd layout for PCI Express cards on the TUF Gaming (the top Graphics Card slot is one row lower than it must be), thus the Aorus Pro is looking to be the best option for Cost Factor while the Steel Legend is probably the best for Durability and Storage.
    The Steel Legend gives up two USB: Type A ports, when compared to the Aorus Pro's nine, but makes up for this by having six SATA III ports for storage as opposed to four on the Aorus Pro; considering that one would be saving about 035$ on an Aorus Pro if they could find it at MSRP (or at all, for that matter; it's still not officially available on Newegg nor Amazon in the states), I would recommend Gigabyte's option if only because of the lower price and if somebody will actually make use of all the USB: Type A ports on the board and their case (Local Ten Player Saturn Bomberman on emulator, anybody?), plus it'll very likely be fine running a 3950X at Stock and in Eco Mode, simply make sure that you have a spacious case and good cooling if you go for an OC though.

    All the m.2 drives of the aorus master can actually be very helpful to people like photographers that can be processing thousands of 30-100mb files or hundreds of gigs of video or audio captures per job. All the nvme would be very useful for in photo editing and light room usage just form person experience. The problem in my opinion is that it shouldn't be marketed as a gaming motherboard but more as a productivity mothoerboard. As such, if they dropped all the gamery features like rgb and awkward bios flashback and all that jazz, could have sold a very solid work station board for a lower price that could be perfect for amatuer video makers or photographers. All the usb slots is also a huge plus for productivity workloads where you could be hooking up a large amount of devices.
    Even with it's flaws, it could be the basis for a bang-for-buck editing machine.

    Regarding PCIe 2x: AFAIK physical 2x slots/connectors don't exist, but there are lots of cards which are electrically 2x with a 4x connector (some of them still claim to be 4x in their product spec, tisk tisk). There are also 4x/8x/16x slots which are electrically 2x, but those are a bit less common.

    Having just gotten an X570 Aorus Pro Wifi, I can confirm it was quite the experience when, after failing to post 3 or so times in a row since I was an idiot who thought the non-WiFi updated BIOS would work on it, the secondary BIOS suddenly kicked in. That said, I don't plan to overclock it too much, just to get some more stable performance, so while a switch for it would be more sane, I'm more or less okay with having a 2nd BIOS just in case something goes wrong, even if there is no switch for it (still have to trick 3 or so post fails to fix the initial borked BIOS tho!)
    I can only imagine how insane it must be to have that crap switch on you nonstop, when you're regularly OCing stuff for fun and system crashes are part of the game!

    I think PCI-E x12 is actually standard compliant from an electrical perspective, but noone makes mechanically x12 slots. Also, some controllers and devices might not support operating in x12 mode at all. More importantly IIRC the AMD PCI-E controller does not support a 12+4 bifurcation mode.

    The B550 chipset itself is only slightly better than B350 or B450 with the PCIe connectivity to chipset slots at 3.0 vs 2.0, everything else is the same.
    The updated board specs for 4.0 and memory speeds is the major improvements and allowing X8X8 splitting of the CPU lanes allows for some bigger differences in board design, pity it's only seen on boards that are priced around that of a mid range X570 board.
    It's strange though that VRM design is still either shitty on the low end or overkill.
    Take the B550 Auros Pro, 12+2 50A DrMos, when really you only need 6+2 50A DrMos stages for most users as that'll happily run a 3950X and be ideal for a 3700/3800X as Zen2 desktop CPU's really can't pull much better than 200W with ambient cooling with any AMD 7nm CPU.
    I'd much prefer that 6+2 50A DrMos than the 10+2 phase if using 4C60N's of the gaming X, which btw looks like one high and one low per phase rather than 1 or 2 highside and 2 lowside per phase, which is cheating.

    Pro tip: You can manually trip the backup BIOS function by holding the power button for 5-6 seconds *while the power supply is switched off* thereby tricking the motherboard into thinking the current BIOS is bad and thus it will load the backup BIOS.

    Just want to make a correction at 30:16 when you said that there isn't any advantage of going X570 for ITX with regards to PCI-E. This is false as X570 does give you PCI-E 4.0 on both M.2 slots as opposed to only one of them on the B550. This is due to the B550 chipset itself not having any PCI-E 4.0 uplink lanes but rather just relies on the CPU's 20 PCI-E 4 lanes for the x16 and one x4 M.2 slots. The X570 does have an x4 PCI-E 4.0 uplink which enables x4 PCI-E 4.0 on the second M.2 as well. This is important as X570 is the only ITX option if you want more than a single Gen4 NVMe drive.

    I can't decide Asus 550 Tuf, ASRock steel legend or gigabyte Aorus Elite (all ATX boards).
    I know the steel legend has strong wrm but I think the x2 nvme ports might become to slow if I purchase a second ssd sometime in the future.
    The Aorus Elite seems nice and is cheap in my country but the ram speeds seems kind of slow. I know fast ram is only show, but who knows, Zen 3 might change that.
    So what "future proof" mid-range b550 board would you recommend so I can upgrade to 16 core zen3 and 2nd fast sdd if they ever become affordable? I don't need lots of USB but 2xusb 3.1 gen2, 2.5G realtek lan, HDMI and displayport would be nice to have. But I realize I can't have everything on a mid-range board...

    When it comes to memory clocks aside from the fact ryzen doesnt need to go above 3800mhz the low mem speed ratings is because only the top boards get testing with TONs of kits. The lower end boards get tested with more common cheaper lower speeds PLUS theres a bit of an upsell going on "oh you want over 4000mhz ram then you better buy [more expensive board]" even if the cheaper boards could do 4800mhz they wont be marketed and rated as such.
    So yeah b550 elite etc could probably do 4400mhz+ anyway.

    the M Elite and M DS3H have very long heatsinks which don't cover anything if there are no extra mosfets. It would be a really weird choke layout though. Are the heatsinks just long to make the VRM look bigger than it really is? Perhaps they had intended to use 2 low-side mosfets per phase when they designed the heatsinks, then went down to one per phase to cut costs?

    BuildZoid in that B550 master review that are coming up I hope you slam Gigabyte for not including a front port USB Type C header. There is no excuse for not including that in a $280 board considering that most people buying a board in that price range most likely will also pair it with a more expensive case that have such a front port. Gigabyte is the only one that are not including that header on any of the B550 boards including the master which is ridiculous and they deserve some flask for it...😡

      I was bombarded with hate from some idiots in Reddit for defending this choice by Gigabyte.
      It's because it all went to the Rear IO section of the board, though this only applies to those Gigabyte boards with 8+ USB ports. Either you get your USB Type C header but have an absolute shit Rear IO section like the B550 Tomahawk is, or get a really good Rear IO section but not have a Type C header.
      It all really depends if you really need to use the Type C header. I have one in one of my cases but I'm fine with just hiding the cable. Just like Buildzoid, I barely even use any Type C devices.
      As for the Gigabyte motherboards that have few USB ports but still don't have a type C header, that really deserves some shit.

It is true that the IBM PS/2 computer came with a model M keyboard though they predated that. However, as a keyboard enthusiast, I will say that having a PS/2 port on your machine is very handy. It's so much better than finding your stash of USB to PS2 adapters.

    Personally I'm kinda relieved that Gigabyte falls short of mATX boards this gen in terms of componentry. Means I don't even have to concider dealing with a Gigabyte BIOS for this gen. I currently have a Gigabyte GA-Z97MX-Gaming 5 and it took me about 3 years of tinkering until I got it completely stable at stock settings - XMP Profile of my 2133 RAM would produce occasional bluescreens (actually both the 1600mhz and the 2133mhz but no memtest errors either way) and after turning off power it oftentimes wouldn't boot and end up in a 30min bootloop till it finally switched to the second BIOS. I had to put in the RAM timings and voltage manually (just the ones from the 2133 XMP profile, mind you) to make it work 100% reliable. And nevermind getting the actual CPU overclock to run stable! UUUUUGH! On the plus side - if you can make this horribly buggy mess run stable you can make any board run stable.

    does extra low side mosfet at rear of the PCB without heatsink helps VRM thermal? I've always just assumed that penalty of being un-heatsinked outweighs benefit of lower resistance...
    TPU review of B550 Aorus pro clearly shows one RAA229004 and six ISL6617A. my hypothesis would be 1. they are using "true phase" bit creatively, trying to emphasize that thier VRM has actually out-of-phase 12 phase unlike Asus's "teamed" or MSI's "Duet" thing or 2.they are not using ISL6617A as doubler, but that's something, so they are claiming it's 'true' 12 phase.

    A shame, really, the situation with the single-mode switch, it's very cheap and sensible option to implement (and it seems there's even space for that near the triple 4-pins where the bios switch tumblers are located on X470 Gaming 7 (which is very similar in IO and layout to this). Also, BIOS reset / restart buttons are missing from the back panel, it's very hand for OC'ing (so, if you want to buy decent board for $280, you might go with X470 Gaming 7, it's capable of running RAM at 4466+, has decent VRM and has sensible layout and connectivity options)

    Most of what I've read about Ryzen memory overclocking says to keep the infinity fabric the mem clock at the same frequency (1:1) with 1800 MHz IF and 3600 MT/s DDR being a sweet spot (maybe slightly higher depending on silicon). A lot of the improvements come from optimizing timings which is why the Ryzen memory calculator exists.
    Is it really worth it to shell out more money for something that can support 5000+ MT/s when you can look for the same VRM in a board that may only support 4400?
    I am looking to use a single CCD processor like the 3600.
