What I've tried that usually works is try using steel wool. Use the correct size of Alan key to sort of push the wool into the stripped out portion of the hex. The way it works is that the wool helps by making the key fit the stripped hex a little better, but also because it's coarse, grabs onto whatever it can in the hex. Of course, be careful to keep it away from the pick-ups.

What kind of steel wool did you use?

I'm building a 12 string electric cigar/shoe box thingy and the neck I ordered came with a gooched nut and a back bow. This has given me hope. Cheers Dave!

I may have goofed. Apparently it's not Gibson-sized, it's 9/36" or 8mm for your domestic viewers. I considered the steel wool trick but am glad I didn't go through with it now that I've actually found SOME detailed information on these old Kays. Thanks Davey!!

I'm going to give that a try next time.I use epoxy resin on the biggest key that fits. This works well but takes a lot of waiting. Thanks for that.

Thanks for making this video Dave, but I'm wondering what to do about the black rubber plug on an MIM standard. The rubber bit prevents the barrel-style nut from coming out all the way, so how should I go about removing the rubber piece?

So, if that screws into the trus rod, and you turn it counter clockwise (as if you wanted to add relieve), at what point does it stop turning the trus rod and is starts being removed from the trus rod?

  • @CJ-rf9jm

Is this possible on a a dual action truss rod? I've got this exact problem & the neck I need to work on allegedly has a dual action rod. The barrel nut will move using the flat head screwdriver method but I haven't tried yet as the replacements not yet here & wanted to double check before it ends up with even more goochery.

Dave - Alway good / fun information ! On your " Stripped Trussrod Nut Removal " video you mentioned that one might get ahold of you with ???? . I have a barrell / hex nut ( as in the video ) that is bottoming out during tightening . Can I remove it without getting myself in trouble with the truss rod itself . . . then either shorten the barrel by cutting off the bottom , or . . shim it up so that it will tighten further . Thanks for your help , and your sense of whimsy !

My barrel nut from my truss rod isn't striped yet, but it is seized up terribly. It won't turn in either direction. Liquid solvents aren't working yet and I've even released tension by removing the strings. This is on my Epiphone PR-100-12 (12 string acoustic) and the nut is in the headstock (truss rod is adjusted there, not inside at the neck-body joint). What can I do? I could probably treat the nut like it's striped and pull it out that way but all I need to do is loosen the truss rod just a little bit.

@davey4557 will it make a difference if ur truss is adjustable both ways? or will that just bum the neck? also where can u buy new ones of those "barrel nuts" and are they universal?

  • @zaphoddog3878

I've had a lot of luck using the next size up TORX bit. You have to be gentle though, the torx bits are slightly brittle and if the nut is cross threaded it can snap off.

What’s your opinion about a similar truss rod nut that won’t move at all in either direction? Even with the normal stuff everyone tries first. “Helping the neck”, penetrating oil, heat, that runaround.

What I don't understand is that I was told that my stripped truss rod nut can't be replaced. Instead the whole truss rod needs to be yanked out. This is based on someones opinion who didn't observe my guitar upfront? Is this true as being the only choice I have? I don't understand why can I just take off the old nut and screw a new one on?

I tried to adjust the truss rod CCW to loosen it. It's loose all the way till nothing seems holding it anymore but still the neck is deadflat straight... it's not broken cause I can tighten it in reverse (CW). what can you advice me to do... thanks in advance!

I managed to take a slight bow out of a Epi Les Paul Custom with a T25 driver.
Have you ever worked on one? I would like to replace the nut but they seem to be different.
The nut seems to be encased in a shaft and I don't see any replacement information on line anywhere.
Love your videos. Spent about 2 hours watching last night.

Put duct tape onthe end of screw driver. Sometimes the right wrench can mess up the nut. They make the nuts out of really cheap metal ,so it will be easy to remove if the threads get crossed on the truss rod.

I sorta' buggered up one-not severely enough I couldn't Remove it, though. So I took it out and put it in a Vice, that I put those Magenetic Rubber Safety Grippers onto. Then I Hack-Sawed a Slot into the end, smoothed the edges with a Point-File, and Voila`-it could Still be turned-only with a Slot screw driver, from now on.

Thats how I've managed it too. Epoxy resin on the largest wrench that fits has worked for me. Its particularly handy if its inside the soundhole of an acoustic and the nut doesnt have a deep enough hole to use an extractor. I dont think the screwdriver method is a good idea. It can split the nut leavin you in a worse mess.

It is more problematic when the truss rod is accessed through the soundhole. It seems such a bad design, going through the sound hole. Not bad - spiteful to the human race. As if the devil himself thought it up. I was about a hair's breath away from smashing my guitar. I just barely stopped myself.
So, how to remove a nut through the sound hole? Do you think smash the top, burn the fretboard and then use the extractor?
