But now my friend the bass is sporting a new paint job and deep cleaning new strings and it a beautiful guitar”bass” that anyone would be proud of playing! It sounds wonderful too. Amazing work on the restoration, looks so good! Also, the fact that someone treated this bass so poorly, not even storing it in a case/gig bag to protect it from this stuff makes me sad. Like even a cheap $30 gig bag would have kept this in super good condition, the 1994 Fender Squier Stratocaster that my father learned guitar on that sat in a gig bag from 2005-2022 in a musty and damp cellar still is in near perfect condition shows how easy it is to keep instruments from getting like this.

    • @andrewphippsphillips1455

Valid points made about those soft cases. I had four of mine stored away in my brother's loft for almost 7years, unplayed, untouched and neglected for reasons I won't go into, mainly through my own fault but stuck for storage space. It was only a cheapy acoustic bass that was left exposed and it coped being uncovered, as the loft was dry and aired well. The gig bags for the 3 electrics were great and although not padded, they stayed dry and clean. Good enough to be traded in & now I have just 5 ordinary 4-stringed efforts which will all hang nicely on the walls in my hallway for now...

It's very humid in Japan, and that causes the "patina" that you see on the metal parts as well as helping dirt to stick to the instrument if it is stored carelessly for a long time. I've bought several old Greco bass guitars from Japan, and despite looking like they had been well cared for they still had some of the same signs of humidity on things like the bridge and tuners.
