Thanks for the video mate. Some great points in your video. Just got a Z6II yesterday with a view of replacing my D5. I have shot 2 shows since then and it has performed well. A bit to learn moving over to mirrorless but it's a joy to use. Having the ability to put an AF point anywhere in frame is great. Cheers!
I have only just purchased the Z7 II and wanted some starting point with set up. I found some, unfortunately American, hard work listening and they gabble. You pleasantly went through the menu with some great tips as well. Thanks for the help!
Love the video, very intuitive and will certainly help me with my Z5. I have a burning question that you may be able to answer. Is there a way to make / adjust your own focusing box on the Z5? I have seen this done before, however, the video was very poor in the instructions on how exactly this is done, and he may have been using a Z6 or better. Essentially he was able to make his own focusing size "box" there were indicators that allowed him to make it longer or wider. Thanks again.
Hey Jason, you should try and set the High ISO NR to either Low or even Off, yes, there is a little more noise but the files are so much sharper! And we all know that Nikon's noise on their sensor is actually not bad looking at all. Just try it - set it to Off!!! If you compare Off with Normal you'll see the NR kicks in hard and softens the whole file.
Outstanding video for this 1-day old Z6ii noob! Thanks for the great overview. Curious, why Nikon over Sony or the others? There is a woeful lack of content defending Nikon on YT. After 6 months of research (having previously shot EOS, D5600, D200, and a rented A7iii), the Z series was the best $$$ for feature and Nikon's color science has always bested the competition. Snapbridge was also a large factor not having a vari-tilt screen... and I agree, it is the best app out there and for remote shooting, image transfer, and firmware updates it makes the Z6ii even a joy to maintain! Thanks again.
Jason, just ran across this video. Excellent. I'm getting my Z7ii with the 24-200mm lens in two days. I've been shooting with a D500, D750 and D850. I don't need four camera bodies. I want to keep my D500 for the crop sensor and shooting BIF and sports. I love my D850. Would you recommend selling both the 750 and 850 or keep one? I've been shooting Nikon for 10 years and looking forward to mirrorless. Thanks for the setting suggestions. It will definitely give me a leg up. Hope to be in New Zealand and Sydney in October.
Oh man, thats a hard one, I am keeping my D850 over my D5/6's but more out of nostalgia and being able to use the slide copier. Once you start using you Z7 II you wont take another body out of the bag. The most important thing is the invest in all the S glass you can, it's phenomenal and as amazing as the f mount lenses are there's just a little something more special in them.
Thanks for the reply Jason. My initial plan, to offset the cost of the new mirrorless, was to sell my D750 and D850. I love my D850 and it's been my workhorse as a travel photographer. I chose the mirrorless for it's lightweight. My experience in Europe in October proved to my carrying about 40 pounds of cameras and lenses takes a toll. Yes, I have many F mount lenses including the trinity 2.8's. I will start with the Z24-200. I will have the FTZii adaptor for my F mounts. I think I'll work with the Z7ii until I'm comfortable with it. If I feel it''s a good fit, I'll sell my D850. If all goes according to plan, I'll sell of some of my F mount lenses and invest in the Z series. Our trip to the South Pacific, New Zealand and Australia is scheduled for October. Here's hoping all is open up by then....Thanks for your help with initial settings.
If the IMAGE QUALITY that you have selected is only RAW as you have mentioned, then WHITE BALANCE and SET PICTURE CONTROL have no effects on your raw files as those settings affect only JPEGs if I am not mistaken
Actually, if you import into Lightroom, and have it to read camera settings in preferences, it'll show it as close to as it was on the back of the camera, depending on settings, the colour profile, light, saturation, colour, sharpening, noise reduction and even lens corrections are read (At least with the Z6II)
Hi Jasin! The Z 6ii seems to make a few click sounds when using the Menu and when it powers off and on. how do you deal with that on set? Love your work Legend!
Thanks John I don’t get those sounds. There’s a very small sound turning the camera on and off but you wouldn’t do that in the middle of a take anyhow.
Agreed John! We get the noises going into and out of standby. The solution is to change the standby delays...Jasin’s was longer than default, as you probably noticed.
Great video, Jasin. Where are you based these days, when you are not working? I should state I am a Sydney boy and no relation to the Matrix producer of the same name.

Hello and thank you from the USA. I own a Nikon Z6ll and my firmware version is 1.6 which is the latest Nikon-US is currently offering How come you have version 3 on your camera??? Thank you for your response.
Hi Jasin. Can you please tell me if there is a setting on the Nikon Z6 ll that when I am doing a portrait photo shoot indoors, I can see my subject in the viewfinder or live view clearly? The moment when I dial my settings in, the screen is dark and I can't see a thing. The photo comes out alright but I just like to see the subject before I take the final shoot.
Jason, I would like to see you drag a shutterless Z9 on a dark night in the board park with LED’s ringing the board. Something mid flight will be fine- Enjoy your tubes Thanks
Hi Jasin, I went through your settings and while implementing the "Limit monitor display switch" the monitor was locked and stoped showing anything. I can see all only on viewfinder. Can you help releasing it?
I have two questions, I always used to manual mode but I use aperture priority a lot now, my first question is do you notice any difference between using manual and aperture priority? I mean does the camera get it right with regards to setting the shutter speed itself to expose accurately? My second question is 14-bit RAW is supposed to give better dynamic range what's your view on that?
I only ever use manual exposure. Take a look further into the video I talk about that. I also talk about it more on my latest video. Thanks for watching!
Hi @DJ Teknovibe, were you able to get your answer? Are you referring to when you are at aperture priority where it is more exposed as opposed to when using manual with having the same settings? Thanks!
Jasin, Thank you for this video. I liked it. I am a d750 user mainly do photos no videos. I am very happy with it but I think eye detect AF and IBIS will increase my speed of capturing moments and and have more keepers. My main lens is Nikon 24-70 2.8g. I purchased a z5 yesterday. I thought that on Z5 it will work at least as good as it worked on D750 for photos. In good light it is true. But in low light most of my pictures are blurry. I am not sure if I am doing anything wrong. I use eye detect in AFS and AFC mode. Very frustrating. It finds eye well but the review of picture show that eye was not sharp. Please let me know your experience with ftz adaptor and the 24-70g lens in low light. Any suggestion from you will be much appreciated. Thanks.
I was trying to figure out some focus issues I’m having with my z6ii and ran across your comment. I am having a horrible time with this camera. I’ve tried different lenses and different focus modes and the focus is just not what it should be. I’ve used the adapter and also a z lens and it doesn’t matter. Low light is horrible.
@@FastPawz My low light auto focus has improved by using some tricks. I am sure you might have also used few of them. For example: (1) menu settings #a11, low light AF, on, (2) do not underexpose more than two stops if possible (3) use single servo AF (4) if focusing in ultra low light use pinpoint AF in single servo which use contrast detection AF instead of Phase detect. (5) for moving subject use shutter speed more than 1/200. My z lens focused faster than F mount g lens. But I think I will have to live with it. I still love my D750 but I am spoiled by eyedetect AF.

Hi. I was under the impression that Picture Controls were useless for a RAW shooter. Picture Controls might affect how the picture appears on your camera's LCD but that's about it. Compare two pictures of the same subject taken with two different Picture Controls profiles by importing the two RAW files in an image editing software and check if you can find some difference...The story is different if you shoot JPEG. On the other hand Auto Distortion Control writes some in formation about the lens used in the NEF file and some image editing softwares (eg. Photoshop) will recognize and apply this information automatically.
Awesome video... But why, oh why did you make the intro sound so loud? It's like 50 times louder than your voice. I was in headphones and it was physically painful to me when the video started. I had to throw the headphones off my head...
Are you trying to activate your HS sync (shutter speeds past 1/200) on your x-pro trigger? If so, set your Z6 to 1/200, then make sure that you have the x pro trigger set for hs sync. The Z6 top setting for flash sync speed is the 1/200* setting and so that is as high as you can go. One other tip with xpro trigger is to set you min sync speed to 30 seconds on the z6. The reason to do that, is that if your shutter speed falls below 1/60th, your flash will still work. Obviously you would turn that to 1/60 if you need to freeze action, but I have found in shooting events and weddings that I need to use longer shutter speeds sometimes , and would forget that my flash would not go off below the 1/60 of a second. cheers
What are the best settings for taking a selfie. I use a 10 second delay, allowing me to get in frame. I have used AFC with face detect, but get lots of blurred shots. Help.
Hello sir , im using the Z series and when i connected with the flash or trigger the live view mode and viewfinder is automatically controled by the flash and it dose not show the real time exposure.
