Jay Leno has Johnnie Carson's dad's 1938 Royal. The hood ornament hints at the Eagle to come. The license plate light on the trunk mimics the hood and the trim on the skirts is half of the hood ornament.
Yeah, I saw that episode. I couldn’t remember what the car was or the date but I did know that it belonged to Johnny Carson. =) or at least I knew Jay Leno owned Johnny Carson’s dad’s car.
I could go on and on and on about new cars and how overpriced they are they’re never going to come down in price because people keep buying them and Covid really ruined the market people paying $20,000 over MSRP. I thought was the dumbest thing in the world.. now those cars are being repossessed because they can’t afford them. Interest rates are through the roof. I could go on forever, but I’m not going to lol. Happy you dig this video
Yes, the cars from this era are wonderful to behold. My first car was a 1949 Plymouth coupe. Those steel-bodied cars rusted soon enough in our salted winter road climate. Jay shows the design details on this one very well: imagine having a body shop in your hometown reproduce them!
WYR: 1. Can't make a decision, love 'em all. 2. The Graham Shark Nose just because it's so different, and love those groovy headlights! My Dad's first car was a 35 Plymouth that he and his sister shared. No pics of it exist that I know of, so I don't know if it was a coupe or sedan, darned sure it wasn't a convertible. Dad passed in 2012 but his sister is still going at 98 (those women always kick our asses in the longevity test) so I should ask her about that Plymouth! Great job as always Jay!
Great choices yeah I wonder why that is why women live longer.. I can come up with a couple different reasons as to why men don’t last as long but I don’t want to offend the woman on here, so I’m not gonna say it.. lol but also men make really stupid decisions as well. I wonder how many men have died after saying hold my beer. My dad made it to 55 grandpa made it to 66 and dads dad made it to 80 something but had Alzheimer’s in his late 50s talk about a terrible disease both my dads parents had it. Grandma got it at a later age but hers was more aggressive
Wonderful era for autos! Love all your WYR choices. My grandfather and one of his brothers were members of the Hoosier Old Car Club. As a preteen I got to attend some meets with them. We would ride to the events in my great uncle's '41 DeSoto Custom 4 dr. sedan. Priceless memories. Thank you, Jay.
For WYR, it’s the Chrysler Royal in the first scenario, both the Chrysler and the Huppmobile the second scenario. But it’s got to be this color, instead of the blue. As far as dashboards are concerned, I take the ‘38 over the ‘37. Great car, for all the reasons you mentioned….the grillle, the ornament on the fender skirt, the art deco dash. But I love the color most of all!
Your rant at the end of the video is soooooo true! Todays cars have no soul, nor a personality. I would also hazard a guess that those seats are just as comfy as any new car- in fact, they could be put in my living room! I'm not a huge fan of most 30's cars, but at least they had soul! Oh, having a Yahoo email addy is nothing to be ashamed of, I like them better than Cox.
I’m not a huge fan of new cars there’s too much plastic there’s too many screens the newest vehicle that I’ve ever owned was a 2016.. If I could have it my way, I would have a bunch of 30s 50s cars I really want an airflow 37 or 36. I like those two years the most… 30s and 50s are my two favorite decades I would really love the owner of golden Hawk one day as well as a 59 Rambler cross country that’s my favorite wagon of all time.. I was watching a podcast with Doug Deiro saying that he doesn’t take anybody seriously that has a Yahoo account which I thought was very close minded to think people judge people based on their email account.. sort of shallow idk
I really love the styling of the front section in particular, No, I take that back, the whole car is terrific. It looks like it would be a fun car to draw.
That '38 dash is a work of art! I havta say, I was never a fan of cars from this era, but with your reviews, I am quickly not only becoming a fan, but truly appreciating the innovations made during this time as well. To me, they all looked the same, but with your up close reviews, I'm noticing the styling differences and details. So thanx! I guess old dawgs can learn new tricks! One other thing that didn't help the Airflow was GM's media campaign against it... No one said squat when Taurus drivetrains were falling off... LOL... I love that radio set up! So cool! What a great car! And wait... what's that I see? Are those "venti-ports" on the hood? 🙂 WYR: 1) Chrysler 2) Chrysler... that Graham snout is just a no... LoL
Awesome choices =) 30s cars are awesome I was never much a huge fan either other than the packards but so many cool companies I want to bring them all to light on this channel =) I try and show all the body panels and trim so people restoring these cars can put them back together
Thanks for another beautiful car, and for helping the Gilmore to get some well deserved exposure. There are so many of these classics out in the world that need just a little love to bring them back to being useful cars again. I love the all original examples, but have no problem with upcycling later drivelines, brakes, steering, and suspension into a solid body. Carry on, you have impressive tastes in automobiles 🤯🐿️😁
Totally agree switching the rear end is the easiest thing one can do to improve overall drivability better gas mileage and while still using the original power plant I love the Gilmore it’s a great place to spent the day and the people that work there are car people and want to share what they have which is totally awesome =)
This car was beautiful. The color was perfect. All of the stainless was clean and shiny. I really like this car, but rather have a 37 airflow they’re so different.
When I was a kid, a lot of vehicles from the pre war era were still sitting around in garages or back yards. So had a chance to go inside them. They all had a uniform 'OLD' car smell, which was unpleasant. At the same time, most of these were ex USA military vehicles, mostly staff cars, with the massive rear seat room. Recalling that Pacific command, under General Douglas McAurthur was located in my city (Melbouirne Australia) The navy See-Bees had built a concrete road from the airport to speed McArthur out of their. I have often wondered if I had ever been in one of the Generals vehicles? So many items were sold off as surplus following WWII, that a 'Crocodile' tank, for towing fuel for flame throwers in tanks sat forlornly on a block of unused land, A Catalina navy plane sat at the airport, and even de-milled tanks were being sold so cheaply that farmers would buy them as spare tractors. I found a Mark VII Churchill tank in a farmers field one day (early 70s) which had the upper armour removed with a blow torch, and I took a souvenir, the gear change plate of solid cast iron. I still have it at a decorative piece. Your show is great for enlivening history you know Jay. All the cars I was aware of were 'Dodges.'
Thank you so much for sharing all that information and insight greatly appreciate it happy to dig this channel. I love automotive history and it took us forever to figure out a format that works and I’m still tweaking the formats so every episode is kind of like a new episode. Even the intro is different every single time.
15:06 Note the hand brake on the right. My dad always liked the hand brake on the right; not entirely sure why, perhaps because it's most people's dominant hand. OT: he also like the ignition switch on the left, so you could reach in the window (without opening the door) to start or shut off the engine.
Hi Jay! You are so right! I have overlooked these cars for a long time. But, seeing it again, I kind of like the design. The '38 is a little better looking than the '37. Looks so comfy inside! Interestingly, the trunk trim piece/license place light must have been a direct carry over from '37 as it mimics the 1937 grille shell. The dash is so nice! Another nice thing about this car is it has a lot of bells and whistles for the time. Specifically, the heater and radio. Every time you show the specs for these 6 cylinder cars, I can understand why Henry Ford hated the six so much! Most if not all have equal horsepower or sometimes even more than the venerable Flathead V-8. Now the flatty was a lot lighter than the OHV or flathead sixes, but still. . . WYR#1 as tempting as the other two are, I'm going Chrysler on this one. #2 ALL of them!! LOVE the Sharknose Graham and the Hupp, too!!
Yeah, I definitely didn’t make the would you rather easy and they were all cars outside the box. I love the shark nose graham I’ve been looking for one to feature. There was one at Hershey, but I couldn’t find the owner which was a bummer… Great choices This engine from what I’ve read is absolutely bulletproof. It was fully pressurized to everything, including the wrist pin which Ford flathead V8 Wasn’t fully pressurized I don’t think I could be wrong
WYR 1: This Chrysler has a great presence, especially the grille. I like the look of the 1937 dash better, though the dual gloveboxes on the 1938 are sweet; externally the '38 wins going away. WYR 2: Gotta go with the Graham for sheer drama.
In 1962 my brother bought a 1937 Chrysler Royal he'd seen in a field. Since it was used as a service vehicle by the farmer it ran pretty good. One thing that my brother didn't believe was the good mileage it got. Around 40 in overdrive.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience with a car. A lot of those classic cars got good gas mileage, but it is suppressed. I don’t understand why we can’t get more than 32 miles to the gallon now with computers and direct injection… 45 miles of the gallons of hybrids something just doesn’t seem right
I AM TELLING YOU, I AM BUYING SOME OF THESE AMAZING VINTAGE CLASSIC 2024, I NOW CAN AFFORD A TON OF THEM THANKS FOR A SENSATIONAL VIDEO Jay. WELL DONE.
Thank you and do it because if you do it and you drive your cars around you inspire other people be like that guy has a really cool car. Why can’t I drive a really cool car and soon he’ll have a really really cool car in the cycle will continue. I have a 52 Chevy 1 ton truck green with black fenders. I was the only one in the area to have that truck. I’ve had it for three years and now I know where there is one that is almost identical to mine and I know another one that’s a car hauler 3 miles I’d like to think that I inspired them to buy those vehicles.
Fantastic Chrysler in my favorite deep green color, and luxurious interior and dash, those 30,'s and 40's dashes were wonderful works of art from a American Bantam to the most expensive Packard. The clock is in a much better spot instead of the glove box lid. First pick Hudson 6 second Graham Shark nose. Purchased my last new vehicle in 2003 said when I bought it now 21 years old, no more new ones, the next will be a 60's 70's classic whether it is a plain Pontiac Le Mans hardtop, or a basic 6 cylinder 3 speed manual sedan or wagon.or truck. For the price of a new 100,000 vehicle I can purchase a Chrysler Letter car, and unlike the new one it will never lose its value .
I totally agree with everything that you said if I could have it my way I would have a bunch of 30s and 40s 50s cars I was driving earlier and a Bee Gees song came on there was a time I wanted nothing more than a mark v bill blass with the opera windows mark v has to have the opera windows lol Great choices the newest car that I’ve ever purchased was a 2016 Kia Sorrento. New cars just don’t hold their value. I tried explaining that to my wife, but she always likes driving new things. We bought a new to us van just recently. I’m thinking about doing a comparison video because I have the generation that came before it as well that I’ve never done a video on More or less a buyers guide not too many people compare those two vans
@@What.its.like. Hey that's going to be a good video. The truck is a 2003 regular cab Ford F-250 4X4 with the unlikable 6.0 diesel. the value went from $37,000 new to around $4500.00, so now its worth just the price of the parts to sell off it, but, I use it for a work truck and is still dependable after 22 years, and will be driving it until I'm too old to drive. Hope the wife come around one day when sees a nice old Rambler or other car you might find sitting in the yard one of these days and realize how fun an older can be. See plenty of younger ladies driving older Scouts pickups Jeeps and cars down here
Totally agree I do Classic Cars, because when you own the car, you own the car, you don’t pay a subscription to own the car you don’t get tracked by the car and the car can’t be disabled from an outside entity .. they’re slowly taking freedoms away with “ features” It is sad I totally get it because I was born in the wrong time. I could see a whole lot more but I’m not going to cause I’ll get in trouble if I do… I’m planning on having a Q&A session. Maybe I can speak my mind on there on the 500th episode
That Chrysler was good value for the money. When I was born in 1954, Dad had a 1934 Chrysler. I was still fairly young when he sold it. He got a lot of use out of a 1950 Plymouth wagon, then the 1954 Chrysler wagon was as magnificent as the Plymouth was spartan.
Awesome thank you so much for sharing your cars with us. I’m a huge airflow fan I think if they would’ve launched that car at the right time it would’ve succeeded. It was just a little too much a little too soon…
WYR: All of them. Show up to the tailgate with a truck, they'll expect food. Show up with one of these, they'll expect nothing other than possibly some good music.
Awesome choices I too would take the shark nose gram. That is a car that I really want to feature this year. They are very few and far between… but super cool I think they made those from 1937 through 1940 virtually unchanged.. the coolest theme. Besides, the styling is the fact that it’s a flathead six with a supercharger… I wonder if it sounds good
@@What.its.like. there was a 38 Graham on the Autorama circuit a few years back it might be on tour.. Imperial Palace in Vegas had a black one 👏👏 fantastic with the bright work ❤️❤️❤️.. Never had a chance to work on one 😞💔... Enjoy 👋👋
wyr Nash wyr Graham That 1938 Chrysler Royal interior looked more like a living room sofa .It must have been very comfortable. That Graham was wild , I bet it was too much for people . Thx Jay
Your welcome glad you dig this episode I didn’t sit in this car it was raining that’s why you could hear my shoes. I guess I could’ve took my shoes off and got in but I didn’t.. Sweet choices =)
I love the '38 Chrysler Royal. No need for armrests on the rear doors. To use them, there would have to be for passengers sitting on jump seats. The rear sear would be more akin to a love seat in a parlor. It's funny where they have the car located, between a Checker Cab and a forklift. Then there is the shop equipment, probably alot newer than the car, as it the toolbox which one could probably buy new today. lol Maybe this was an overflow room? Anyway, a cool Chrysler. Maybe a video on the Checker is coming?
This car was on rotation at the Gilmore. I think they were doing a couple things to it mechanically I did not do the checker cab. I did a checker wagon last year.
Love old cars with split back windows. Dash is bad, however- gas guage is easily visible to wife. She'll start bugging you even though you've got a whole quarter tank left.
Awesome choices I really want to own a shark nose graham I would really like to find one to cover this year. I miss my opportunity last year at Hershey. I couldn’t find the owner.
That Chrysler reminds me of a 1937 Dodge which I used to see in my neighbourhood during the 1960s. It was a 4 door sedan with the crank out windshield.,Possibly last year for that feature. My picks here would be the 1938 Ambassador and the Shark Nose Graham.
Very nice job on the video. To me this car isn't anything special but it is super interesting to see its design details shown clearly in such a nice example and it makes cars like this much more attractive to me. In the first scenario I'd choose the 1938 Hudson Six and the second the 1938 Sharknose Graham by a mile! I love those Sharknose Grahams! I love old cars but I've driven a lot and seen a lot of accidents so I want all the safety features of newer cars. Plus I have a relative and a couple friends who were ambulance drivers for years and they all said they would never want a daily driver without airbags. Safety engineering and the engineering for performance and economy crank up the prices a lot and I begrudgingly say it's worth it. But yeah, new cars don't have the soul or character of older cars.
Nice video but I definitely like the 1939 model year a lot better. The Dodge and the Chrysler looked a lot a like in '38. I hope that you do a video on a '39 Chrysler sometime in the near future, if you haven't done one already. For WYR, I'll take the Hudson, and definitely the Graham shark nose. What a unique looking car! And then for the song, my only guess would be "My Baby Left Me", by Elvis Presley, but I don't think that I got that one right. 🤔
Definitely The goal was the cover at least one car from every single manufacturer that never gets talked about on the flipside of that I want to cover every single car like at least one so I want to revisit this with the Chrysler imperial and the Chrysler imperial custom as well as a few multiple body styles.. the coupes look so nice but are rare Great choices I love the shark nose graham that is a car that I’ve definitely been looking for.. I want to know what that car sounds like I can’t think of another company that supercharged the six back then. It’s not an Elvis song Song is from 66 it’s not The Beach Boys either
Hiya Jay- That song is Iko Iko by The Dixie Cups... Ain't it? One of those incredibly obscure songs that everyone seems to know 😂 And OH, how cool are those Sharknose Grahams? cheers!
The "Airflow" was awesome. Unfortunately, Chrysler set the stage for "Half assing" things. Amazing what happens when U're 50 years ahead of the power curve. 😐 Many thanx for a GR8 vid 👍👍
Want a comment? Ok fine. You should have rolled down the front windows and seen that the vent window trim is on the roll down glass and not the vent window so when its rolled down the view is clearer. Walt would have worked on this car design as well before passing.
Yes Chrysler were an engineering company forst and foremost. Looks whats happened to them now though. THey are at best a syling company, resting on the memory of their variant of the hemi-head. Which wasnt so fancy an idea anyway. IE, the Merlin engine ran a hemi with 4 valves per cylinder, DOHC with sodium cooled valves, and much more, and that was in the early 30s. Tell me, was first gear syncro'ed?
Totally agree do you also find it funny that the challenger was late to the party but when they came back with the retro design, they made the same 70 challenger retro for like 20 years.. idk maybe it’s me they are cool just long in the tooth
Hahaha youtube becomes a popularity contest to a bunch of people idk it’s weird and a bit like highschool.. I just wanted to say Im up for collaborating with anyone
I do have to disagree somewhat with your statement about consumers controlling the auto market. In the US the rising costs in the auto market have a lot to do with government regulation. The government is trying to force auto makers create a car that is as safe as a Sherman Tank yet get 100 mpg. That type of regulation is expensive to comply with and the cost is reflected in new car prices. True, the public is eating up all the new features that come out on cars but that's only part of the cost.
Just look at bud light people stopped buying price came down.. My dad bought a brand new Ford F150 truck it was a 2015 model option completely out but he bought it in 2016 for whatever reason it sat on the lot for a year they took $25,000 off the truck he bought a $55,000 truck For 30 grand it was insane. It was the best truck he ever had… that won’t happen now but it takes everybody to not buy just like what happened with Bud Light..
My parents were 14 in '38. It's during the Great Depression... Unemployment in general, was maybe 25 percent. In Geneseo Kansas, it was 100 percent. It's amazing these companies survived. These are lovely. Just beautiful. I've never seen before.
Wow that’s crazy I would think people farming would have a job because everyone needs to eat, farming is one of the hardest jobs out there with very little pay
Another advantage of old cars is that they aren't constantly looking over your shoulder. It's not paranoia if they really are watching you all the time! :)

There was one at Hershey, but I couldn’t find the owner which was a bummer…
Great choices
This engine from what I’ve read is absolutely bulletproof. It was fully pressurized to everything, including the wrist pin which Ford flathead V8 Wasn’t fully pressurized I don’t think I could be wrong
Those headlight buckets are called nacelles
WYR 1: This Chrysler has a great presence, especially the grille. I like the look of the 1937 dash better, though the dual gloveboxes on the 1938 are sweet; externally the '38 wins going away. WYR 2: Gotta go with the Graham for sheer drama.
Awesome choices I love cars with dual glove boxes
Love those 30’s cars learned to drive on a36’ Chev pu
That awesome 30s and 50s are my two favorite decades so much design and innovation have come out of those two decades, fenders and fins
Lovely motor car.
I totally agree with everything that you said if I could have it my way I would have a bunch of 30s and 40s 50s cars I was driving earlier and a Bee Gees song came on there was a time I wanted nothing more than a mark v bill blass with the opera windows mark v has to have the opera windows lol
Great choices the newest car that I’ve ever purchased was a 2016 Kia Sorrento.
See plenty of younger ladies driving older Scouts pickups Jeeps and cars down here
A beautiful work of art! Today ee have
Yeah it was =)
Total style and simple elegance , unlike the trash that is being crammed down our throats these days. Thanks Jay, you get it!
Totally agree
I do Classic Cars, because when you own the car, you own the car, you don’t pay a subscription to own the car you don’t get tracked by the car and the car can’t be disabled from an outside entity .. they’re slowly taking freedoms away with “ features” It is sad I totally get it because I was born in the wrong time. I could see a whole lot more but I’m not going to cause I’ll get in trouble if I do…
I’m planning on having a Q&A session.
@@What.its.like. Exactly. Ahead of its time.
WYR: All of them.
Show up to the tailgate with a truck, they'll expect food. Show up with one of these, they'll expect nothing other than possibly some good music.
Hahaha nice
My pics would be the car with the overhead valve six and the car with the flathead supercharged six ..
@@What.its.like. Wow.
Graham Shark Nose 👏👏👏😉
Hudson was a great runner 👍 but all would work for me 😉
Great Episode 👏👏
Happy Motoring ✌️🤠
Enjoy 👋👋
wyr Nash
wyr Graham
That 1938 Chrysler Royal interior looked more like a living room sofa .It must have been very comfortable.
That Graham was wild , I bet it was too much for people .
Thx Jay
Your welcome glad you dig this episode I didn’t sit in this car it was raining that’s why you could hear my shoes. I guess I could’ve took my shoes off and got in but I didn’t..
Sweet choices =)
His and Hers glove boxes but No Glove Box Test. How will we ever know if our DSLR camera will fit or not.
I love the '38 Chrysler Royal. No need for armrests on the rear doors. To use them, there would have to be for passengers sitting on jump seats. The rear sear would be more akin to a love seat in a parlor.
It's funny where they have the car located, between a Checker Cab and a forklift. Then there is the shop equipment, probably alot newer than the car, as it the toolbox which one could probably buy new today. lol
Maybe this was an overflow room? Anyway, a cool Chrysler.
Maybe a video on the Checker is coming?
This car was on rotation at the Gilmore. I think they were doing a couple things to it mechanically I did not do the checker cab. I did a checker wagon last year.
Both dash designs have their strong points. I prefer the earlier one for its 'timeless elegance' and its 'wooden boat' strake look.
Love old cars with split back windows.
Dash is bad, however- gas guage is easily visible to wife. She'll start bugging you even though you've got a whole quarter tank left.
Hahaha yeah I didn’t think about that
Family friend had one when I was a kid, Royal Blue.
Awesome
1938 Hudson
1938 Graham
Awesome choices
I really want to own a shark nose graham I would really like to find one to cover this year.
Awesome choices thank you so much for sharing those memories
Great choices and agree =) safety is the only thing new cars offer that good
I would love a review of the NYC taxi at some time, as the specialist company that built them is an odd story in itself.
One day =)
Chrysler
Graham
Awesome choices =)
Nice video but I definitely like the 1939 model year a lot better. The Dodge and the Chrysler looked a lot a like in '38. I hope that you do a video on a '39 Chrysler sometime in the near future, if you haven't done one already. For WYR, I'll take the Hudson, and definitely the Graham shark nose. What a unique looking car! And then for the song, my only guess would be "My Baby Left Me", by Elvis Presley, but I don't think that I got that one right. 🤔
Definitely The goal was the cover at least one car from every single manufacturer that never gets talked about on the flipside of that I want to cover every single car like at least one so I want to revisit this with the Chrysler imperial and the Chrysler imperial custom as well as a few multiple body styles.. the coupes look so nice but are rare
Great choices I love the shark nose graham that is a car that I’ve definitely been looking for.. I want to know what that car sounds like I can’t think of another company that supercharged the six back then.
It’s not an Elvis song
Song is from 66 it’s not The Beach Boys either
You could do a review of the Opel Olympia/Kadett from 1930's.
I really want to just have to find one =)
The goal is to cover at least one car from every American company
Hiya Jay-
That song is Iko Iko by The Dixie Cups... Ain't it?
One of those incredibly obscure songs that everyone seems to know 😂
And OH, how cool are those Sharknose Grahams?
cheers!
No not that song or band =) it’s an oldie but newer than the car 60s I think sweet choices
The "Airflow" was awesome.
Unfortunately, Chrysler set the stage for "Half assing" things. Amazing what happens when U're 50 years ahead of the power curve. 😐
Many thanx for a GR8 vid 👍👍
I love airflows want to own one some day thank you glad you dig this video
Jr Walker and his All-stars .... Shotgun
Great cast not that song or band
What Goes Up Must Come Down, By Blood, Sweat & Tears
Great guess not that song or band
Una belleza por donde se mire, 👍de todas maneras el graham 38 es👍
Totally agree =)
Want a comment? Ok fine. You should have rolled down the front windows and seen that the vent window trim is on the roll down glass and not the vent window so when its rolled down the view is clearer. Walt would have worked on this car design as well before passing.
I would go for the Imperials myself. They were beautiful cars. Don't like the gauge layout though/ The '37 was a better gauge layout.
Sweet write in
Sounds a bit like a famous Rick's opening roll through my work truck speakers. Hope they don't give me up or let me down.
Real deal on this channel I’ve never rick rolled anybody lol
Jay The Grille Looks like a Fencing Mask 11:20
Hahaha yeah it sort of does
"Why Do Fools Fall In Love?" - FRANKIE LYMAN &THE TEENAGERS
Hahaha that was me at the very end name that tune different song from 1966 was used on channel before
Hudson 6. And the Graham.
Sweet choices
D measuring? Does that require a feeler gauge?
Hahaha youtube becomes a popularity contest to a bunch of people idk it’s weird and a bit like highschool.. I just wanted to say Im up for collaborating with anyone
I suspect it's pronounced Roy-al, like a Big Mac in France. I may be wrong.
Royale is spelled like that it’s just royal
Why Do Fools Fall in Love
1956 single by Frankie Lymon and The Teenagers
Haha that was me at the end haha
Not that song the tiny clip before that
The Chrysler, Nash, or Hupmobile.
Awesome choices, Aaron =)

8 Chrysler
38 Graham
Awesome choices that graham I’ve been looking for one
