FREE SPEECH. benefits the people who hate it. IRONY IS SO FUNNY. ELON is great and his vision for freedom of speech on the internet is a great idea and out of all the billionaire's he is defiantly among the best of the option's for people who could've bought twitter.
@@JTL1776 Elon is firing and banning people criticizing him or calling him out on his crap, which seems very anti free speech. Advertisers have fled and he's bleeding money like crazy. He's fired important people and cut most the staff. He's turned the company into a hellish place to work which has driven off all the talented people that can find better work that weren't already fired. He's trying to cut costs by killing random critical microservices like 2FA. He's running into numerous regulation issues both in the US and the EU, and taunting the ones responsible for enforcing those regulations. He's driving Twitter into the ground at an insane rate, because the man is completely clueless and doesn't know how to make a company successful without getting massive handouts from the government. Which is exactly how he's currently keeping things afloat by pulling funds from SpaceX which receives massive amounts of government money and putting it into Twitter. I imagine it won't be too long before he sells the company off at a massive loss to prevent it from completely bankrupting him. It is amazing watching Twitter crash and burn at breakneck speeds and the memes coming out of the $8 verification badge are awesome.
I don’t think mastodon can replace Twitter. The reason being that it is horrendously complicated to use for the normie non tech person. Which is why it will never take off. I made an account and 90% of the time I’m still confused how to use it, and I’d consider myself pretty tech savvy. Tumblr has a better chance than Mastodon imo.
I agree it won't replace or kill Twitter. The average normie isn't interested in exploring tech, fediverse, FOSS, blockchain etc, they just go where friends, family & celebrities are. In terms of replacement it depends entirely on the end users wants for a social media platform. I'm on multiple platforms I like to spread myself, some posts I get more engagement on Twitter sometimes Mastodon gets more. As long as a post isn't specific to the platform I'll copy & paste into my other accounts I find it interesting to see where I get more engagement.
I disagree. It is the mindset which should change. Many don’t even question what happens to their data when registering for a new service. There is a lot of documentation about Mastodon. The main reason people are confused with Mastodon I think is the onboarding process. It, at least of what I think to remember, doesn’t do a good job at explaining what thoughts and information is important for using Mastodon (regarding the mobile application).
Some things I wanted to add: - Mastodon is not the only option of software you can host to take part in the network. There's also Pleroma, Soapbox, Misskey and others that many use to take part in this social network as well. - A big flaw I want to point out is that like/reply/repost counts are VERY inaccurate when viewing a remote post across federation. A post might actually have hundreds or more interactions, but you may only see a fraction of it from your instance. There's no way to guarantee your instance will always have accurate numbers. The developers of Mastodon. Pleroma etc will just tell you to look at the post on the source instance to get the accurate data. This defeats the point of federation in my opinion.
I've seen this play out so many times, with RUclips, Twitch, Tiktok, Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, Discord, Reddit, etc etc etc. People won't ditch Twitter for Mastodon, even if Twitter goes down today, i doubt even 1% of the userbase would go to Mastodon in the next year. I like Mastodon, but there isn't a strong reason for people to use it over Twitter, Reddit or even Discord.
true because twitter is a household name, its I guess the first maybe oldest but it certainly exploded in popularity. Theres only one twitter, and 6k mastodon instances. key word instances each with different domain names. Thats not even counting the non federated ones where they are simply isolated. Theres one YT, FB, Twitter, Twitch, Insta, TikTok, Snap, Discord, Reddit. The popular ones are popular because they are centralized, able to be archived easily since you're just pulling from one domain name.
He hit the nail on the head. The advantage that Twitter has is the network effects (number of users). I joined Mastadon about 3 years ago, and I’ve logged in about twice. I love the concept, but there isn’t much context since there aren’t many people there. It’s a chicken and egg problem. These federated social networks need to figure out a clever way to bootstrap or they will forever remain niche.
I use twitter and I'm quite tech savvy. Not leaving twitter, sorry open source maniacs. It's just another platform that's eventually gonna die like all the others. No one interesting is joining, so I'm not joining either. The app is garbage imo and I can't with all of these instances, it's like choosing a twitter within a twitter. The whole premise is just flawed.
Okay, I think it is pretty funny how some comments say that Mastodon would be left-leaning. There are also some that say Twitter would be “fire” right now with Elon. Uh, first, what does “left-leaning” even mean? Second, Twitter is “fire” in its current state?! Is that a joke? I hope so. I’m not too much into politics, but I think that this separation into “left” and “right” is ridiculous. My experience on Mastodon has been so much better than on Twitter. There is not as much hate, but still discussions going on. Some ministries in Germany even joined Mastodon. With Mastodon I see the content I am interested in. With Twitter I constantly saw hate and bigotry. These days I sometimes think about the times on Google+ when one could discuss without people throwing a tantrum because they are confronted with another person’s view. Yes, racism and supporting people who make fun of others in desperate situations are not respectable opinions. I mostly wrote this comment to show there are people who appreciate content like this and are open-minded. Yes, this is a good time to educate people about alternatives so platforms like Twitter. And, in my opinion, people who say that Twitter is “fire” right now are off the rails. 😄
Mastodon just feels dead. Like I know there's so many people there but everyone's talking to themselves and I don't feel like there's any group of people I can talk with. (I've had it for 2 years now)
I drop Mastodon becuase of this reason. I make and promote a software, and the interaction I got on Mastodon is less than 1% of what I got on Twitter. It seems that many of their "strong points" (the federations system, no algorithm) hurts the current user than attracting new ones.
I love how one of his complaints about twitter in the beginning is twitter's tribalism only to talk about mastodon where tribalism can only be worse than in twitter.
Yes but Mastodon is a federated platform that anyone can host. Unlike Twitter where you are stuck either agreeing with how it's managed or leave, with Mastodon you can host your own instance or find one run by like minded individuals.
@@theodis8134 Which requires someone to spend $ which most won't or use their own hardware which most don't know how to do safely. As such, there's no incentive for normies to join. Especially if they don't agree with those views.
@@theodis8134 I wasn't saying anything about how anyone views twitters management though. I was talking about tribalism and all your explanation did is point out what I said. That tribalism could be worse on mastodon. Also, people might not have the time and money to manage and pay for what's needed to host their own instance.
@@fbch32 Yes people within an instance probably joined an instance because it's targeting a specific set of users. But it being federated means communication between different instances of which they might not all share the same views. Any individual might not have the resources or knowledge to run an instance but that doesn't mean someone else hasn't already that they align with.
As I have been using Mastodon for a bit, I can speak from a tiny bit of experience. When it comes to the individual instances they tend to be fairly silo'ed. Meaning that they attract people of like minds and beliefs. This is something I actually enjoy about Mastodon, because it means that you will quickly find people that you have a lot in common with -- at least depending on the size of your instance. However, where you break out of the silo and start encountering others is when you start looking around for shared interests. Interested in privacy, security, and FOSS? Use those hashtags and you might find yourself talking with a socialist, a libertarian, or a "free speech" conservative. The difference on Mastodon than on something like Twitter, is that you are going to initially be engaging with this person around the shared interests / values you have in common. You can discover that there might be a benefit to following someone you don't agree with for some reason -- because they offer some sort of value to you. Here is a real example: I ended up following a guy who happens to be a furry. lol. I have zero interests in furries and I consider it to be rather weird. This guy lives over on a furry instance called the petting zoo. Nevertheless, I discovered him when I was looking up something else and he was spitting some interesting stuff that I found insightful. I checked his postings and realized that he actually produced good content that I liked -- minus the furry stuff -- and so I gave him a follow. He popped up in my notifications tonight because his cat is in intensive care. I was able to share a story with him about having senior cats with similar health related issues. So, now I kinda have a furry for a friend. lol. That's kinda been my experience. You find an instance with like-minded people, and then you follow hashtags that involve your interests. That lets you meet people outside of your instance. When you meet people outside of your instance the meeting is such that you are discovering each other on common ground and shared interests. That means that even if they are really different than you, maybe someone you might have never considered interacting with based on face value in the past, you maybe reconsider if they are producing interesting content. As you follow their content you can constantly evaluate whether or not they deserve a place in your timeline, and often times, such as in the example I gave, despite initial appearances you discover that you have more things in common. I have to say that my experience on Mastodon is VERY different than on Twitter. Most of the people -- maybe even the majority -- are people I'd actually like to meet and hang around with in real life. Why? Because we all have shit in common. Even when we may not agree 100% on things the initial reason I followed them was BECAUSE we had something in common.
Mastodon does not work as a public square. Twitter tailors your feed to your location and language. Mastodon does not. Mastodon instances can say they have an “official” language for the instance, but they will not enforce it clogging up your timeline with content in languages you can’t read. Even if an individual instance successfully policed its “official language”, you are then trapped in that one instance, because the fediverse as a whole cannot have an official language ever. So your fediverse timeline is even more clogged up with posts in languages your can’t read. Also blocking other instances is NOT rare. It is increasingly common, and is gradually defeating the point of the fediverse.
Honestly, I'd suggest just downloading a copy of your Twitter data, and waiting to see what happens next. Mastodon may be Elon's dream Twitter (and it may also be yours), but Twitter for me has always been about networks. I've already seen several people in my networks migrate to Faecesbook. I suspect more will follow. Much as I dislike Faecesbook, and the damage that they have caused, if I want to remain in those networks it will mean moving to Faecesbook. Of course, I could just use the demise of Twitter as an excuse to quit social media altogether. 😀
@@Slimothy first of all, liking your own comment makes it invalid 💀 second Elon is literally crashing Twitter as we speak, but let me guess, you’re a fan boy making your comment even more invalid.
I'll consider switching when there's more people on it, especially big companies. Right now, Mastodon is nearly useless in terms of news feed let's be honest. Yes it's cute, it's privacy-oriented, but it's absolutely empty.
@@userjames2009 Ah no. Twitter is bloated with unproductive staff and will continue to operate as is without them. I wish them all the best and hope they find alternative work quickly but twitter doesn't need them to be successful. Big companies, ie advertisers, will go where the audience is - which is twitter.
@@userjames2009 Twitter workforce collapsing you say? 🤣 They didn't work the last few years and the platform is still here, bro. And who cares about woke companies?
Using Mastodon is less safe or private than Twitter. The administrators can see your password and attempt to crack your hashed passwords without any corporate oversight. I know this as an Administrator of a Mastodon instance.
Nah Mastodon will not replace Twitter. Mastodon is hard to learn for normies some mods are power hungry and you will be banned if you don't share same views, Mastodon is creating more extreme echo-chambers which will boost more extremist views. It's not private and safe, you need money to run servers etc.
I think the activity and movement being seen at Mastodon is mostly due to certain people who were addicted to old Twitter babying their thought and are looking for an alternative. It is not for the quality and open source of Mastodon they seek. Within a short time, they will leave Mastodon and join Twitter stealthy or in the closet. Twitter is too hot for them, but it is where the action is globally. I think Mastodon will lose its new users in less than a year’s term. I pass on Mastodon and remain in Twitter.
No thanks I'm sticking with Twitter it's getting good weather Twitter survives or goes down in flames like Myspace the entertainment value is just amazing to watch ☺️ I'm staying with Twitter
The problem with moving to mastodon isn't anything to do with quality really, the reason i can't use it instead us because it's simply not Twitter. Twitter is 1 server with all users. Mastodon is more like Tumblr, a bunch of blogs you can follow. Ive seen not indication that it can fill in the Twitter niche. Idk why people are comparing the two.
Twitter is much better in the last few weeks, it’s nice to see an opposing comment in online debates. Though, everyone should be familiar with mastodon as it’s less centralized than Discord, and you host your own instance. We should all avoid centralized control of ANYTHING. Get on all the platforms. Stick to the ones you like. Don’t keep all your eggs in one basket. Lean toward tech that has free speech, and no moderation.
It’s nice to see a FOSS service that’s being promoted but idk this just sounds like a discord and Reddit baby without the massive user base. I’ll still try it out tho and see what’s up.
By now, I use Twitter a lot more than Mastodon. I use Twitter to share resources, news etc. and stay up to date on issues related to Library Science and free software, science and technology in general etc. Masatodon's philosophy is related to free software.... so I usually use it to connect with people who like free software (only). My librarians colleagues don't use Mastodon. Anyway... I use both
Mastodon has to sell the idea of instances better, when I first downloaded this ap there was little explanation, I didn't understand how choosing one will change my experience, I felt lost and discouraged, "so it's just discord" I thought, only now and here, when I understand the idea and I'm sold 3 min into the video, imo Mastodon won't grow without more clear messaging
I actually signed up for a Mastodon account back in 2019 but never used it. When the Twitter board accepted Musk's initial offer to buy the site back in April, I dusted off my Mastodon account and sent my first toot. I've increasingly been using Mastodon since Elmo moved in to Twitter HQ and especially the past week. It still needs work but so far it's been great. I hope Mastodon and the Fediverse succeeds in being a viable federated social network ecosystem.
I'm already on a few different servers there, each one covering a different niche area of interest. I've followed you from my LinuxRocks account. Tusky is the mobile app I'd recommend for Android users!
Gotta admit I’m new to this Mastodon platform, but that set of instances sounds to me like a resonance chambers more than a “find your best match thing”… yeah, instances can interact, but I still don’t see the point in having an instance “that matches my taste” (in politics or any other subject)… twitter has become over the years some sort of chamber like that in which you mainly access (read) what your followed ones post… probably sharing your same vision of life, social media, news or whatever you’re interested in… so, Mastodon, no, thanks… more complicated and probably a bluff a couple of months from now… most of the “noise” around Twitter these days is not about Musk’s behavior (erratic and debatable) but his war on censorship and single-acceptable-ideology crap Twitter has been for years now.
@@user-xl5kd6il6c Oh no. I'm enjoying what's happening. The memes from the $8 verification are amazing. I'll be sad when Elon is eventually forced to sell it off at a heavy loss to prevent his bankruptcy. Also Elon has been banning people left and right for exercising their speech. Free speech doesn't mean only allow the speech the owner likes.
@@theodis8134 >exercising their speech You mean bans for impersonation that have been in the ToS for years >eventually forced to sell it off jack off to that idea at night all you want, it doesn't seem likely. Twitter is a simple service, he could fire everyone except the infrastructure guys and hire new people and it would be alive and better in a year. He isn't even going that far
Mastodon as a community is horrible. No matter where you join it's either: 1. A wasteland 2. Mods/Admins with power delusions. 3. Furries It's like saying let's ditch Twitter for Discord.
Observation: it seems some high-profile influencers on Mastodon have disproportionately higher reach, as they have less competition. OTOH, you may find people you follow actually engage with you.
The fact it's federated means there is no single entity taking the responsibility of setting up a centralized set of rules to follow. In other words, Mastodon has already disqualified itself by failing to use the right centralized setup. It will collapse as soon as its administrators can no longer keep up with the users. 1. Finding the account of the people you want to follow is basically impossible, unless you already know it. 2. Moderation might be consistent within an instance, but as soon as you venture elsewhere, there is no way to be sure what the rules are anymore. 3. Usernames are too long to remember. 4. Mastodon is aimed at tech geeks, because it is not user friendly. 5. News reports about pedophiles posting on Mastodon without suffering consequences from moderation are conveniently ignored. I can go on, but to summarize: I will do anything I can to ensure Mastodon will be extinct within 5 years, just like its namesake. There is no chance I will use this cesspool. Twitter is getting worse, but this is not a valid alternative.
Tribalism 101 Human history in a (tiny) nutshell. 'Our group identity is built through conflict'. Give us somebody to fight and we'll come together as a community and then, we'll be happy. 👉Anthropological records show this is the point of stoning people to death, that when you get to stone somebody to death as a community. it makes everyone happy and builds a sense of communal identity. It brings joy to the community because now we know we're good.
It's cute seeing the InfoSec virtue signalers striking and purging, now Twitter's reaching new all-time highs. And friendly reminder that Mastodon server admins can read DMs.
It depends entirely on your instance. That is why you should A) Make sure that you are joining an instance targeting people you have stuff in common with (they are who you will see in your local timeline). B) Read the Server Rules before joining. Mastodon is similar to Twitter, but it is not a one to one replacement. All of the instances are privately run, but you can communicate across instances. Some instances block other instances for various reasons -- for example, the instance I am on blocks instances the promote child abuse (i.e. child porn) and Nazi-dominated instances. Obviously, if those instances exist it means that if that is your thing you can join them. You don't just have freedom of speech on Mastodon. You also have freedom of association. You as an individual can never be permanently silenced, but people can choose to not associate with you -- cutting you off from themselves (individually blocking you) or their instance. Moderation revolves around freedom of association. Your account is anchored to an instance, but you can also leave that instance and join another. Basically, in a nut shell, it is the most free platform that could possibly exist. It is both free as in freedom and free as in beer (it costs nothing, the instances survive off donations, there are no ads -- meaning that you are not a product, etc.).
@@MrJunkes I'm not worried about left or right I was more referring to how its run or moderated do the rules apply equally. I didn't quite understand what Mastodon was until the great explanation in this thread by @AldrickTanith
Haha, I doubt that it'll be on this channel any time soon, as Henry already explained why Techlore community is unmanageable on Matrix half a year ago. Another thing that feels off is that ActivityPub integration is not an out-of-the-box experience on [m]. Although, I'd personally just go on chatting there instead of Mastodon because I'm not used to microblogging.
Nice and informative video. What do you think about MeWe as an Alternative to Facebook? Would like to see a video on MeWe. I've never been a fan of Twitter and gave deleted it long ago Facebook has been very convenient to me although I'd prefer to move over to a safer plattform
This was a great overview of Mastodon in comparison to Twitter. I knew about the platform briefly by watching your videos, but I didn't fully understand what it was used for. This helped a lot
Now that Twitter seems to have its head out of its butt regarding censorship, I just joined Twitter for the first time. This is literally the first time in my opinion it's deserved anyone's support. Well there will always be much to criticize in a big corporate platform like this it would seem counterproductive to leave it for a platform that seems to be designed for people to filter out anything they don't like. That's more of an echo chamber than a form of communication. So, no thank you.
I do love mastodon, because I can block a majority of people easily unlike twitter, because well twitter knew what people used Blocklists for. I don’t care what your political opinions are, if your beliefs are dumb or not, if you want to debate healthy that great, but I deserve the right to mass block people who are just there to be hateful.

There's a pretty big issue with the far left leaning userbase though. Talk about tribalism. Even as a moderate that didn't post political content it was cringe. Massive echo chamber. It's also where failed Reddit and Discord mods go to lurk. People who don't drink the flavoraid in most instances get removed. Many instances have warnings to this effect. I think if there was a large instance that could leave out the politics or at least be more neutral I would consider returning. The userbase is too low to be worth paying for my own server right now. Also Mastodon numbers are misleading, sure tons joined but most instantly left or aren't active. Both platforms are trash currently.
I kind of feel like the way mastodon set up, tribalism can only be worse especially with admins being able to remove anyone they want. Unless I'm not understanding it correctly.
@@fbch32 They can indeed remove any user they please for any reason within their instance. You can export your data and move to a new instance but most share the same ideology.
I’ve found it to be more liberal than anything. I mean that could be a you issue. American Overton window is so much to the right than sane liberals seem far left to Americans.
So Mastodom is like everyone can create group like on facebook, but in Mastardom this group will be on unknown person server that could be some kid of scam, spying at you.. Well epic fail
All of the sudden EVERYONE is bashing on twitter!! Everyone hides his political motivations by tech fluff, privacy, security, .. etc. All social media platforms have those issues.
I have no idea why you've struggled so much in setting up an account. Are you trying to join a Mastodon instance that has closed itself to new users due to the influx of people from Twitter? Did you try and join an instance that requires an application or pre-approval? I've setup a number of different accounts across multiple instances. It takes less than five minutes. All I needed was a username, password, and an e-mail address. I then get an e-mail asking me to confirm my e-mail address, click the link, and boom -- I'm done. Aside from instances that require applications or have closed themselves off to new users (at least until they upgrade their hardware). . . I am not sure why you are struggling?
Great vid! :) I think that it really helps to find an instance that a) isn't too big or too small and b) somewhat revolves around your interests and values or consists of people from your country/speaking your language. With that in mind, it doesn't matter that much if you're new and don't know anybody yet. The local feed will do its magic and be a decent place to find people to follow. Other than that, hashtags are important to check out. People from my country started using a hashtag for toots in our language in order to make them easy to find. So my usual advice is 1) Join the biggest instance in our language, 2) Scroll through the local timeline, 3) Start tooting and use the right hashtag to be found easily. From there on, people will learn everything they need by just trying it out :)
No one. Mastodon cannot be owned. It is free, open source, and federated. Individuals and groups may control individual instances, but they cannot control the platform protocol. Mastodon is totally free. That's free as in freedom (free speech and freedom of association) and free as in beer (it costs nothing, the instances survive off donations, there are no ads -- meaning that you are not a product, etc.). It is the most free micro blogging platform that could possibly exist.
@@thicktankrider LOL. Leftists get on just fine there. It is the most free platform possible. It is both free in terms of speech and association. What that means in practice is that people of like minds ultimately find themselves on similar instances. Each instance has total control over who is allowed to join, who is allowed to stay, and what is allowed to be posted on the instance. That is why you should read the instance rules before signing up there, but even if you don't like a particular instance you have the ability to relocate to another -- taking everything associated with your account with you. You'll find instances run by dyed-in-the-wool Nazi's to out-and-out communists to woke liberals. As well as anyone who could fall in between or outside those groups of folks. ...and this is where freedom of association comes in, if you don't want to see or hear from woke liberals, you join an instance that blocks their instances, and you'll never have to hear or see them ever again. The opposite is also true. This is why Twitter is always going to be a dumpster fire for free speech, because ultimately it makes money off of ads. It wasn't people who were "woke" that made Twitter into what it was -- it was advertisers and Twitter's desire to attempt to turn a profit. That is why Elon keeps rolling back on his proclamations -- it's why he just announced that "negative" and "hate" Tweets are basically going to be shadow banned. The only genuinely free platform is Mastodon. It is free both in terms of speech and association. It is also more privacy-respecting than Twitter.
@@AldrickTanith good points there. Maybe I will give it a try, but who is paying for this gig. Servers and coders? Wokism and political influence was actually a problem at Twitter. The laptop from hell story was surpressed for instance. Mastadon sounds to me like all the rogue platforms like parler, truth, rumble in one place though. I like the de-centralization though.
Mastodon is better than Twitter for people who host their own instances, but outside of that the "moderation" differences that you listed as a positive for some Godforsaken reason are the worst parts of it. The owner of your instance can block an instance that contained half your followers and then you don't have much else to do besides move to another instnce if you want to keep interacting with them.
This is a lesson that people should learn. The gate keepers thought that since they had the Kingdom they could make the rules even when they made no sense. Now that they lost their keys to the kingdom. Now all of the sudden everyone is switching gears. It just goes to show that when people use the word like tribalism and do the same crap you realize it's just them trying to talk down on people. Maybe you shouldn't have treated those who you disagree with as the enemy. Remember there is always more than way to skin a cat. Honestly I think this is hilarious. You guys treated those who had no power like crap and told them to create their own power. Well Elon just wiped out his check book and goes alright how far we are going? He even tried to not buy Twitter and Twitter forced him to do so. So if your upset about Elon buying Twitter. I bet 90 bucks your probably one of the reasons why he did it. Again Twitter created tribalism before anyone else did. Well technically Clinton did but everyone ate it up because they can't make their own choices or be their own people. You might want to try gettr or gab. Again you won't be the majority but that shouldn't matter. If you only go places where you're the majority then again your doing tribalism.
I wanna ditch Mastodon now, lol. But… yeah. Every social media has a catch. I only use Mastodon for fun, the idea of hosting servers is fun. I can FLEX and show off… but… no. As long as Twitter is alive, I’m sticking to that. It isn’t dead yet (and hopefully it never leaves). I heard they might ban it in the United Kingdom.😢 Only thing I hate about centralised social media is if your accounts get falsely suspended or locked…. it takes a while to bring it back. Contacting local-authorise and government advice in your country, and companies head-office. Only because support online is very minimal. But then… the entire world eats your data, lol. Mastodon only has an email support or unless I’m not looking at their website properly, lol. At least with Twitter, I have a peace of mind there’s always a way to contact them in an effective manner. Same with Meta for Facebook or Instagram. And at the end… once something goes big…. It becomes something else. I’m not hating towards Mastodon… I like it, but right now I find Twitter safer. And it’s great for reaching out and expanding your career, especially as an artist and songwriter/guitarist. Apologies if I’m being rude, I have autism and the world in a different way.
I was toying with the idea to switch and after watching your video I went to Mastodon to try it… big disappointment.. trying to create an account is terrible (I have mode than 8 years in IT and 15years working on web)… finally got a server that was able to let me in and update my profile got me with tons of errors… it is not ready yet… give it 1 or 2 years more 🤦♂
Elon's also running the business into the floor, so switching to something else now might save a headache trying to get a base, as at some point twitter might just suddenly not exist or be accessible
Such a trash social media. So confusing. Can't find a search input where I can find new servers. I don't know how I could see all the servers I follow in one timeline.
Mastodon is a joke. The fact you need a manual just to get people started is a complete non starter. Twitter turned, among many things, into a platform to stay up to date with topics that are relevant to you from sources that matter. For the people tweeting, it is an important tool to reach out to their audience. The problem is that there is no one that matters on Mastodon. The high amount of pointless instances doesn't help either, which only confuses people more and fragments the userbase into their own super specific echo chambers, even if you have access to a federated timeline. The whole thing gets even worse when you extend it to the fediverse. I tried using pixelfed and peertube, but trying to find any semblance of relevant content is nigh to impossible in the sea of pointless instances, and again, no one that matters is using these services. No normal person will ever spin up their own instance. I find it all to be utterly pointless in its current form. Unless there is a complete or significant exodus to mastodon from Twitter, mastodon will remain irrelevant. And even then, I don't know that it could overcome its many problems that are baked into it.
How can you talk so confidently about what an algorithm is yet be so incredibly wrong? Like forget the fact that you contradict yourself in your video, and that some of the explanations are just faulty at best. The entire section on what an algorithm is was just cringe worthy.
Nope not gonna move to Mastodon. Mastodon is terrible. Good idea on paper but horrible implementation. It's so much more tribal than Twitter. Many of the instance admins (and probably some of the developers as well) are childish reddit-mod power-tripping types. You're at the mercy of these people. Sure you can move to another server but if they have a personal grudge against you, they often will also completely block any server that you join. Twitter is far from perfect, but at least it's not like that
@@bluepurplepink what do you mean yes your not the person who said it? Nope I just expressed how cringe that was to say especially considering what people and companies really mean when they say that, it’s like no hate speech polices. Hate speech doesn’t exist, it’s only used as an excuse to ban or censor any information, statement or questions that at least one person disagrees with. I haven’t made the comment section my “safe space” because if I did in the sense of what that statement actually means, no one would be able to reply and disagree in anyway at all like you are in a deluded way right now. So no this isn’t my “safe space” because that’s just a rubbish term to only have those who agree with you and allow for no discourse.
algorithms can downrank negative stuff. They can limit hateful reach. They're useful for auto-moderating stuff that looks like SEO/spam/hate/harrassment, so that people don't see it as much / don't pile on as much, giving time for moderators to respond to reports and remove the content.

ELON is great and his vision for freedom of speech on the internet is a great idea and out of all the billionaire's he is defiantly among the best of the option's for people who could've bought twitter.
I'll never go to Mastodon.
Except for RUclips, I have no use for any platform.
I’m leaving Twitter permanently
I don’t think mastodon can replace Twitter. The reason being that it is horrendously complicated to use for the normie non tech person. Which is why it will never take off. I made an account and 90% of the time I’m still confused how to use it, and I’d consider myself pretty tech savvy. Tumblr has a better chance than Mastodon imo.
I agree, I am still confused and I would consider myself a techie guy...... I think I will stick with Twitter!!!!!
Same happened to me.
Same, tried today and gave up
Some things I wanted to add:
- Mastodon is not the only option of software you can host to take part in the network.
@@xyzzy4567 now there are more people on Mastodon. Try it!
@@azkanand5832 still just a bunch of random people talking to themselves
Well, this did not age well, Mastadon users are going back to Twitter
Mastodon just feels dead. Like I know there's so many people there but everyone's talking to themselves and I don't feel like there's any group of people I can talk with. (I've had it for 2 years now)
I drop Mastodon becuase of this reason. I make and promote a software, and the interaction I got on Mastodon is less than 1% of what I got on Twitter.
It seems that many of their "strong points" (the federations system, no algorithm) hurts the current user than attracting new ones.
@@Capumaraca Yeah
Everything you've talked about mastodon is also true for email.
To be clear, I fucking hate Elon Musk. I would love to find a good Twitter alternative. But Mastodon is not “good”.
You know Mastodon has a filter page that lets you pick what languages you want to see on your timeline?
I set my account up so that I only see posts in English and German. Not that big of a deal
Let’s face it guys, wherever people go to becomes trivialized.
I like the last idea.

It's not private and safe, you need money to run servers etc.
I love the email analogy to describe Mastodon.

Why are some videos missing on the TILvids instance (e.g. Techlore Talks #4)? Some technical problems or something else?
Anyway... I use both
Mastodon has to sell the idea of instances better,

only now and here, when I understand the idea and I'm sold 3 min into the video, imo Mastodon won't grow without more clear messaging

Observation: it seems some high-profile influencers on Mastodon have disproportionately higher reach, as they have less competition. OTOH, you may find people you follow actually engage with you.
On Twitter, I end up on a following spree. Doesn’t happen on Mastodon.

The totalitarian left wing mob has already started to try to influence Mastodon. The next platform they will try to control. Don't waste your time.
They're mostly left-sided.

It's more like everyone is fleeing Twitter. Perfect time to promote libre alternatives.
Trying to set up a working account on Mastodon is a nightmare. One that I still have not managed to succeed with!!! It's a bloody nightmare.
Use docker lol, otherwise I suggest GotoSocial
Get someone to help you.
Who is owning this? Who are the investors?
@@AldrickTanith Interesting. So woke leftists will have a bad time there. Good.
@@thicktankrider gab and rumble are my favorite.
In response to this… is like saying “ditch LinkedIn for Mastodon”. LinkedIn isn’t what it used to be before, which was a website for professionals.
Can't keep that same energy for discord tho...
I was toying with the idea to switch and after watching your video I went to Mastodon to try it… big disappointment.. trying to create an account is terrible (I have mode than 8 years in IT and 15years working on web)… finally got a server that was able to let me in and update my profile got me with tons of errors… it is not ready yet… give it 1 or 2 years more 🤦♂
I have no I.T. experience and it was pretty easy for me. Not sure why you had problems. Took me like maybe 15 mnutes
@@fonzired The server I joined gets constantly rebooted… now was better but not there yet

No thanks, Twitter is better. Mastodan seems waaaay more tribal.
Elon's also running the business into the floor, so switching to something else now might save a headache trying to get a base, as at some point twitter might just suddenly not exist or be accessible
This "CHOSE A SERVER" thing is very unfriendly!
Such a trash social media. So confusing. Can't find a search input where I can find new servers. I don't know how I could see all the servers I follow in one timeline.
I am going back to Twitter. The Woke Progressive users are finally leaving.
Noted!
Mastodon? Why not Hive THREADS ?
Nostr FTW
How can you talk so confidently about what an algorithm is yet be so incredibly wrong?
Like forget the fact that you contradict yourself in your video, and that some of the explanations are just faulty at best. The entire section on what an algorithm is was just cringe worthy.
show me on the doll where elon triggered you.
But it's entertaining mate. Where will I find even half that fun 😜
so Mastodon is the birth child of twitter and discord?
Nope not gonna move to Mastodon. Mastodon is terrible. Good idea on paper but horrible implementation. It's so much more tribal than Twitter. Many of the instance admins (and probably some of the developers as well) are childish reddit-mod power-tripping types. You're at the mercy of these people. Sure you can move to another server but if they have a personal grudge against you, they often will also completely block any server that you join. Twitter is far from perfect, but at least it's not like that
So what'd you do? You're leaving that out of your story.
Self hosting exists. All the admins and mods that I’ve run into have been really fair and nice
Safe space... you really said that🤮
Yes you mad? You’ve made the comments sections your safe space.
So no this isn’t my “safe space” because that’s just a rubbish term to only have those who agree with you and allow for no discourse.
so its a echo-chamber generator.. in its perfect form a single player social network..
Im leaving Twitter permanently
algorithms can downrank negative stuff. They can limit hateful reach. They're useful for auto-moderating stuff that looks like SEO/spam/hate/harrassment, so that people don't see it as much / don't pile on as much, giving time for moderators to respond to reports and remove the content.
What's hate speech? If I say 'abortion takes a life', does that count? It's so dumb.
Twitter x woke employees went their. Why go where cancel culture went
I'm sick of hearing about all of it. None of them have users that say anything important, meaningful or even interesting.
Keep calling truth fake news and see what happens when people get mad.
You can even try that in person. It's amazing how that when all you want to do is troll people that none of them want you around anymore.
Recommending tools like unbirdify (when it comes bavk online) and fedifinder, makes finding atleast some of your twitter follows/followers on the fediverse side.
