As someone who's played both versions a lot, the two games are incredibly different, even though the main mechanisms are the exact same. The stations make blocking a worse strategy and adds to the importance of claiming longer routes- to balance this, the Europe version only has 1 route of distance 6 and 1 route of distance 8 (both of which are tunnels), with all the remaining routes being 4 or less. The U.S. version had a LOT of routes of 5 and 6, usually meaning that whoever claimed them won (especially true if they received the Seattle-New York or Vancouver-Montreal routes). Thus the Europe version is more balanced in this way. The Europe version also makes better use of the wild cards through the ferry routes, and requires more set collection for the tunnels, making it a slower, more strategic game in that sense. Finally, everyone gets 4 routes to choose from instead of 3 at the start of the game, one of which is a guaranteed long route worth around 20 points (that they may or may not keep), while the remainder are short routes usually worth 10 or less. Again, this ensures no one is forced to pick two incredibly long, impossible to complete routes, or force to be stuck with 3 short routes that wont award anything at all once complete (like Denver-El Paso or New York-Atlanta). It is, in essentially every respect, a much much better game. I love the original, but between the U.S. version and the Europe version I'd pick Europe any day.
StyxTBuferd Oh, and one extra thing: The original TtR had really small, Settlers of Catan sized cards. The Europe version has much nicer, fuller sized cards (though you can get normal cards for the original through the 1910 expansion).
First off, he never said "This game is really different," he said more along the lines of "This game has similar gameplay to Ticket to Ride, but has some upgraded game mechanics." Secondly, you mentioned only ONE of the new elements in TTR Europe. For routes over water, you need to use at least 1 wildcard, and for routes through tunnels you may have to pay additional cards to complete them, both of these rules weren't in the original version of the game.
Anne is like one of those dreamy elementary school teachers that you remember for the rest of your life because she was really nice and everybody had a crush on her.
I just bought the Ticket to Ride Europe app (within the last 24 hours) AND THIS HELPED ME OUT A MILLION TIMES MORE THAN THE ACTUAL HOW TO DEMONSTRATION!!!! Also Anne and Wil are SO adorable.
Hands down one of our favorite board games for beginners (right next to Settlers of Catan!). Everyone at our office (probably) adores Tabletop, we may have to have a battle of the channels sometime! Also, and I think it goes without saying, this show never gets old, and is always hilarious!
@@kohl4life Since I happened to see this, and nobody seems to have answered, if you somehow haven't been informed in the last two years, you do not need to be working toward a ticket to put down a new route. If you have time to grab a ticket, it's typically worth it, but is by no means required.
Anne rocks and it isn't selfish to have her on the show at Will. The whole point of your show is to get people, especially families playing tabletop together. Just make sure she keeps sitting on her hands LOL. Thanks for keeping the show going and for yet again inspiring us to spend quality time with the people that matter to us.
Out of all the G&S Vlogs this is the one I wait for. Honestly, I have to thank Wil Wheaton for reigniting my love for board games and face to face human interaction. My family and I now have set aside one weekend day out of the week to play board or card games. So as I stand here humble and contrite for disliking Wil solely for his role of Weasly Crusher (have liked you in everything else though) and sincerely thank you from the bottom of my heart. I now look foward to seeing Wil weekly on Tabletop.
Friend Wheaton: just wanted to stop by and say a MASSIVE thank you for bringing me into the board gaming fold and, in turn, allowing me the joy of sharing my love for the hobby with friends and family. Thanks to you and this show (along with several other RUclips sites), I now have THREE consistent gaming groups that meet throughout the month... all filled with newly-Christened gamers. Graci, Will... keep up the good work!
As a side note, could I make a couple of gaming requests for next season? Perhaps "7 Wonders," "Mice and Mystics," "Dead of Winter", "Pathfinder: the Adventure Card Game", "Race for the Galaxy", and/or "SteamPark?" These are ALL wonderful games!
Great game! We don't do any scoring until the end, so we don't have to worry about knocking the counters on the edge of the board. So we score longest route, everyone declares route cards, then each player scores segments (e.g. 1 x 6 long = 15pts, plus 4 x 4 long = 28pts, etc), removing trains from the board as they are counted. Also it is often easier to count how long a player's longest route is by starting with the number of trains in their pool, and subtracting those they haven't played, and any on the board that don't count towards their longest.
Ok... so I was one of the "Ticket to Ride!!! Again?!" crowd. But I'm watching this episode for the 3rd time now, and I've still got a massive smile on my face. I am now of the opinion that it doesn't matter what game is being played... as long as you're having fun.
+alandrian well, there's no point in counting them up if no one use any of them. Unless seeing bigger, equal number gains for everyone is somehow increasing your epeen.
I really liked how everyone really played this time. I enjoyed the friendly relaxed vibe of the first one and this one still had that, but it also had that "man, they want to WIN" vibe too.
I love this series just so much. I had a lot of friends that used to play boardgames with me but then I moved to go to college and that sort of fell apart. But we managed to keep in contact and found a lot of these odd games online through a module, and it was just great. It's great to see some of these games come into light through this series!
Pink. Definitely! That was so close, Wil, but very knightly played. =) Ticket to ride Europe si probably the most unnerving game I've ever encountered. I was really unsettled even while watching you guys. =)
This is my first time watching one of your games TableTop people and I must say, you guys are awesome! Unlike other RUclips channels, you guys explain the rules really well and really show how the game is played and progressed, and the camera shots are spot-on! Good job and keep it up! Also, as for my thoughts on the game, I thought Emma was gonna win since her beginning strat seemed similar to mine and I tend to win. The loss of a turn for her was unfortunate. And yeah, that end-game longest route really was a deal breaker!
That was the best episode yet! I think this was partly because Wil wasn't filling every gap with talking/joking (because he was taking the game so seriously) which allowed everyone else to have their space and do their own talking/joking.
NOO, i now saw all episodes thats up right now. I´m looking forward to see the next ones comming up. It was a lot of fun so far, thx for this show. Greetings from germany :)
I love Table Top. I have been watching it since season one and have seen every episode. I credit it with bringing board games back to my family's free time. We have also bought several of the games that have been played on the show. Thank you Will Wheaton. By the way I loved you as Wesley Crusher.
I almost closed the video before Anne came in at the end there. Glad I didn't! For all the people that read comments before finishing the video, this comment comes spoiler free, but watch through the credits! :D
TICKET TO RIDE: EUROPE IS LEAVING THE STATION! ALL ABOARD... This week's episode features John Kovalic, Emma Caulfield, and the return of ANNE WHEATON! What games are you hoping to see on future episodes?

great episode Will but i'm begging you for an episode with the following guest: You, Anne, Felicia, and Nathan Fillion!!! it would be soooooo good!!! please?
The original "Ticket to Ride" has become our go-to game when I visit my folks a few times a month. It's just complex enough to appeal to us as adults, yet simple enough to always be fun without being frustrating. We've been looking into getting "Ticket to Ride: Europe" and maybe the "1910" and Asia maps expansions. I'm trying to work them up to trying "Munchkin" and "Betrayal at House on the Hill" at some point.
So much fun! I played this version after watching the original Ticket to Ride episode. Like Emma, I also had a very difficult time scanning my routes. LOVE the after- credit bonus! (I had noticed that the table had been Anne-proofed between seasons) ;-)

Usually, as someone who is a big fan of boardgames, without the means to play them nearly as much as I'd like, I am big fan of this show and thus Wil, for introducing them to people in a funny manner. So, typically I hope for him to win. This episode though? Maybe it was as he said, I am very much a 'play to have fun, don't play to win that ruins the point' kind of person, so him acting against that made me want anyone but him to win today. Just desserts as it were. Also, the ending was hilarious. Everything from the facial expressions after the fist comes down to the sheer joy in tossing all those trains ever-where. Great stuff.
Was a bit dissapointed they didn't use any stations. I got TTR Europe for Christmas and wasn't sure how the new mechanics worked so was very excited to see this played as a demonstration. I guess I'll have to read the rules :P
You place stations on a city from which you wish to use another player's route, as your action for the turn. You don't have to declare which route you are claiming until the end of the game. The route only counts for completing tickets, not for longest train. The first station costs 1 card, the second a matching pair and the 3rd, three same-colour cards. You lose 4 points for each station you use during the game.
I think it was only Wil and John screwing each other over, so the stations weren't needed. Also, most of the route-claiming seemed to be in the east, rather than the west which is incredibly crowded. Trust me, in a five-player game with lots of routes in western Europe you'll need those stations!
Wow. My wife and I played for the first time last night. We were looking all over for the locations. Didn't realize the locations are on the cards. LOL. Thanks for the tip!
That looks like a great game. Did no one play a train station? No matter the final score, Anne won at the end, as far as I'm concerned. That was awesome. :}

+Calvin Cosmos Please tell me you waited until right at the end of the video, after the credits rolled. PLEASE tell me you did.
+Nathan Hawkes Thank you stranger. I nearly missed that!
You can see Wil disown Anne for 1/4 of a millisecond. LOL
Need more Anne. That closing scene with her wrecking the board was awesome.
I'm thinking that one hurt this time.
