This video feels like a bob ross video. This guys’s not classically trained, but he can make a really pretty picture
that's it. I keep thinking, why do this feel so familiar.. this has bob ross vibes in it
He’s also genuinely excited to share the thing he loves with everyone and is really optimistic that everyone else can learn how to do it just like Mr. Rogers. It’s awesome!
...Except Bob Ross WAS Classically trained.
The difference is bob has a great afro and rob is on his way to be bald. Lol

Rob:plays chord
Also Rob: see this chord describes the story if a lost lover who you finally found but they’ve moved on. BUT YOU HAVEN’T! So anyways she’s still friendly so you go to the bar and you look at her... just as beautiful as the day you lost her... but it’s over now... but it can’t be? How did something so beautiful fall from grace?
Rob: so yeah that’s what this chord sounds like
Major 11s immediately come to mind. Clashing the major third with the perfect fourth a semitone apart as well as the root and major seventh. Spread voicings get rid of some of the dissonance, find it fun to alternate between the root position maj11 and the maj11 with the 11 in the bass. Sorry, read that and had to play around with it
Me: mmm, pretty noises
@@JohnDoe-xx8yw it's a beautiful chord, love messing around with it

When I was just starting guitar I watched your song tutorial for rollerblading, and these chords quickly became the foundation of my playing. I don’t know if I would have gotten this far with guitar without them, and I can’t thank you enough for that Rob ❤️

I'm going in about 6 years self taught and I absolutely love this sound. Thank you for the introduction! I'm for sure going to play around with this!
Love the video, and great stream last night, you answered one of my questions and it made my day, thank you!
You and Rabea are my biggest inspiration when it comes to ambient guitar playing.
I have been dinking around with these exact chords for the past month and this comes outta nowhere and shows me a bunch of extra stuff I can do with them, super sick and great timing. Keep up the good work Rob!
Almost like your phone has been listening to you - time to check your privacy settings maybe 🤔 😆

I love this sound. I had so much fun playing around with it on my harp! Thanks so much for creating this space for me to jam with you!
I could listen to Rob wax philosophical about music for hours. He's IN LOVE with music and it really shows. Like, the breaking down of each nuance of notes, chords, etc. and how they "feel" in his mind...it's pretty cool to see the gears turning.
God, seeing a music youtuber this big talk about this style of music feels so good.
5 mins in and I have had more fun I've had with a guitar in a little while! Thanks for opening my eyes rob
Impossible how much inspiration this video has given me right away, Rob! 😌
I'm glad someone else simps over these emo 7th chords as much as I do. When I worked at Sweetwater, all my coworkers would make fun of me because they always knew when I was setting up a guitar or tuning it for a customer; they could hear my "sad boi" chords from across the store.
Hi , how was it working there?
jazz musicians are dying hearing people call 7th chords "sad emo" chords -_-
@@sosak4mi That's the wonderful thing about music, isn't it? Great musicians utilize techniques (both production and playing) and chord voicings that may have originated in one genre and recontextualize them. Also, if you're going to be a smart aleck, perhaps acknowledging the fact that we can trace the origin of seventh chords back to Bach's era would be a good place to start.
@@alexpagodin5947 I understand that, but extended chords and jazz are basically husband and wife, hence why i used jazz as the stand in genre. First time I heard it was in your "short song", it marked me forever, such a beautiful tune
I love how passionate he is about these chords, I am into them too!
These chords always remind me of dreamy, late afternoon light through a hemlock forest at a remote research station I worked at. Strummin', sitting on my porch, looking at the lake, feeling nostalgia.
Thanks for the vibes, Rob and Midwest Emo.

I loved the interactions between you and the crew!
An "A Major 7th add 9" is actually called "A Major 9th", but yeah, same shit. Don't confuse it with an A 9th chord, though, as that is an A 7th add 9, while the A Major 9th is an A Major 7th add 9. A 7th chord and a Major 7th are not the same chord, and by extension, a 9th chord and a Major 9th chord are also not the same. Just a little theory for the curious comment reader.
I get it now
thank you dude, cringed so hard when he called Amaj9 an Amaj7add9. know it's just a detail but still, I was surprised because I thought rob had a music degree. guess you really can be great without loads of theory under your belt.

I think because you can do those E and A inversions over the same three fingered strings of the original open chords, ignore the rest of the strings, and still bring in the open base notes for depth.

im so stocked u did this video.. i’ve been using the 1st chord for years but little did i know this beautiful shaped chord has thousands of variations to it. much love from 🇲🇾
4:46 that was basically Head in the Ceiling by Title Fight lmao
In case anyone was wondering, there is a name for this type of chord. In jazz, we have what's called a "shell voicing" which features the root, third and seventh of the chord. We remove the fifth because it doesn't add a ton of meaningful harmonic information, and it gives us guitarists an extra finger to play melody or some colorful chord extension. Midwest emo uses lots of colorful chords, hence this sounding midwest. But if you want a more in depth look, this idea has been around for a while, and the jazz world has lot's to teach about it.
Obviously it is not going the exact same system that Rob has here, because he is taking a very different approach, but jazz covers a very similar idea.
I love this chord Subscribed
