@@dirtgrainsteel probably, until something breaks or seizes!! All that older stuff is so amazing!! There’s a guy on RUclips here that saves old engines , steam and others. Johnathan somebody. He is fun to watch.
Their is a guy in Ireland who has his own channel, Way Out West, he has one of these only bigger and has built a system for running machines of a belt drive. They are so reliable and so easy, the fact that it' hasn't run for 40years and started without much work, is a testimony to the guys that designed and built them.
I'll have to check that guy out....it's a possibility he we might be related lol ....yeah it's crazy how reliable these old engines were and still can be!!
One of the best uses of one of these engines I saw was at a tractor show where they used it to run ice cream makers. When the ice cream was ready they blew a whistle and people ran to get some ice cream. Very tasty ice cream too!!!!!
I was at an antique tractor show in Wisconsin once, that had a hit and miss engine running an old cement mixer. They had replaced the original mixer tub with a stainless steel tub and had an LP burner under it, making popcorn. I wanted to get me some, but the line was probably 50 yards long!
I love the sound of the hit n miss engines. There was a family that used to set up at the Valpo tractor show that had quite a display of them. They would boil eggs and cook hot dogs in zip bags in the water hoppers.
That was fun. I've always wanted to have a hit and miss. I've seen several on garden tractors and thought it was neat. Remarkable that it ran after all those years sitting. Really exciting to see it fire up so easy.
Now I gotta find time to work on an old engine I have. I believe it's a Briggs and it has a foot pedal to start it. It had been on a washing machine of my Grandmothers, and was stored in Grandpas garage when he passed away in 1959 and she gave it to my brothers and I to play with. It hasn't ran since the early 1960's.
John deere L tractor makes a really nice ice cream making machine. Right angle gearbox and some fabrication. My boss had one he would run it at idle until the tractor would stall then the ice cream would be ready, Mr.Burkhard had many requests to make ice-cream for different events.
Excellent video Brandon :) remember the hit & miss engine on home farm back in home was in Big Machinery Shed and in 1986 Me also middle older brother try getting going after so many years ago sitting! No sure hp or model or age was off hand ! Me also older brother got 1950 Cockshutt 40 started and found belt to turn over on the Hit Miss with Cockshutt 40 belt pulley wheel after 16 tries got going and ran no bad too ! Only part lucky Machinery Shed had gravel dirty floor sat on Hit Miss but when got run put Cockshutt away it caught fire on the fuel squirt gas on Spark plug and Hour Glass up on top water tank broke to squrit oil so had fire lucky there water hose barn not far too so had got out but my older brother got burn on leg from when try take spark plug wire out on shut down! But we both grounded by parents and uncle also burn work bench wood on fire to but had use allowances both us and work hard farm by materials fix for 6 months! Yes we both learn hard lessons for sure and didn't do with Hit Miss again! Yes both teenagers at time I was 14 my older brother was 16 and summer season months also learned that Hit Miss works too! But got repairs to done to and was gone to Farm Antique Mesumn local to us! But found Hit Miss was used on farm for Hand Mill run make chop feed and also get water to Farm house before Electricity set up in 1960 of well pump also get water to barn plus Old Steam Engine tractor for Threashing Machine back years in 1930 to 1950 and Well To but did see run once in 1983 when Well need Electric pump fix so Hit on stand on top well caseing door was Square type belt driven in to ! Well was deep one over 100 feet down heard 330 feet hand dug out by my late Grandfather Bill Cann SR! That well gave Barn , farm house plus Mobile Trailer I grew up in for lots water! Best cleaning Water to drink and rest needs Hit Miss found was different one not one me and my brother tried get going was neighbor farmer had years later! Seen lots Hits Miss at Farm shows and cool Machinery to lots useful too!
We had one similar to that here on the farm to pump water for the animals many moons ago. So i thought i would try to get in running but this one had a crank handle ya had to put in the flywheel and 22 stitches later in the forehead i learned how to do it correctly
@@dirtgrainsteel yes it did were in the same boat we also had the water pump but can’t find it. The engine is still sitting under the bench after getting a crank handle to the head i gave up
The cart under the bench is likely a original JD cart for your engine. The stamped carts were on 1.5hp and 3hp engines. They made a kerosene variant of all of these sizes as well, which are very very rare in the US. Your governor adjustment seems to be pretty fast, (you can adjust the speed on the knob below the pushrod which you can loosen to allow it to run slower) and your rocker arm return spring can be had as a repo really easily! Nice engine as well!! we have all 3 in original condition, and I really like them that way! Penetrol flood is your best friend there...
The big end also needs lubrication, via an oil drip glass or some other means of oiling. I couldn’t see from the video . That magneto is amazing after all those years. 💪
Interesting to see it fire up so well. I guess the magneto didn't lose its magnetism from sitting. It looked to have plenty of power, based on how fast the board smoked.
be sure to check the oil level in the crank case.. there is a piece of metal that separate the fuel tank from oil pan most time they are shot.. so watch out.. another thing to keep in mind do not pull the wire off of the igniter to stop it... not good.. for the mag trust me the mag is making electricity and no place to go .. one more thing to watch is the block this model had a bad casting many many are cracked the bad spot is above the fuel mixer by the drain valve
Since some steam enthusiasts use a dose of tannic acid in boiler water to inhibit corrosion, I wonder if it could contribute the same benefit in water hoppers?
Your dad had a smile from ear to ear when that thing fired up.Awesome
Yep he was excited!
Soooo cool when you spun the wheel and it started running.
Hit and miss engines are cool it's fun just to watch all the parts move on them!
Good to see your Dad in part of a Video!
Can't wait to see the finished product you your Dad n Dadstrength plus rest of family do an amazing job
Thanks 👍me to!!
Those things just run!! Wish the new stuff was like that!! 😂🤣
They seem like they will run forever!

I have been on the lookout for a hit n miss to setup an icecream maker for the kids. Well I am going to tell my wife it is for the kids!

The engine that could.
Very interesting!

Nice to see the old engine fire to life after a long rest. The family tie in makes it extra neat.
It's always fun to bring them back to life!
It's amazing how the old stuff was built. True piece of history right there. Can you imagine how many run hours is on that machine. Awesome video
As always just another great video sir. You know Grampa is up there just smiling. Thanks again

of modern engines could do that.
Hey its a John Deere of course it will run

Thanks and keep

No, John Deere E's don't use them.....they have an enclosed crankcase...
I've been having the urge to fiddle around with some hit and miss motors. Seems like it would be fun
I think they could be alot of fun especially if you find things to run with them
That is awesome to watch great work love your channel by the way
Thanks for sharing Brandon great to see and hear the engine fire up 👍🇺🇸
Your welcome! Thank you for watching!

We were worried that the mag possibly lost it but surprisingly it didn't!!

You just answered one of my biggest questions now I know how the crankcase oil is getting in the gas tank!!! Thank you!
Nice sound
GREAT JOB GUYS !
The handle on the fly wheel didn't look like it was retracting in while it was spinning. That could give somebody a bad day.
Yeah it needs a spring also
I know...Lets get the tractor in the background running!! LOL
I want a hit and miss so bad and then have it paired to a homemade ice cream maker !
They are out there!
I want one. Hope you video the rebuild.
Oh I definitely will video it!!
Cool.
Since some steam enthusiasts use a dose of tannic acid in boiler water to inhibit corrosion, I wonder if it could contribute the same benefit in water hoppers?
I'm sure it would I have seen a additive sold specifically for these engines for the water
Believe and maybe in one sentence? I have an "E" Type, restored. Hit and Miss Enterprise has lots of parts.
.
I think they have closed.
Where’s the caterpillar that you sneak peaked us?😊
It's coming sometime next week
So cool
🤘🤘🤘🤘👍
Just think, today you need $500.oo of electronics and a computer science degree to keep motors at a constant speed. lol
Yeah lol we went backwards in technology I think
👍👍
cool
I've heard a hit miss engine in person. Over you tube yours sounded a little different. It does sound like a hit miss engine.
To me this one sounds like it runs alittle fast and rough
@@dirtgrainsteel I wonder if the microphone on your camera is picking up a little echo,. You mite be rite, on the little fast.
The Amish use these engines widely today.
