Loved it! All those beautiful engines! I designed a little "baby beam" engine, with cylinder and other parts on the scale of a 10V. All bar stock. Maybe one day I'll get a Stuart Beam engine kit.

Hi Keith,Thanks for the video. I on with a Stuart beam at the moment and its good to see and hear them running. (I just need to complete my Stuart No.1 first)

That sepia inset at the start reminded me of the mighty 90 inch in operation at Kew, truly a beast and a shame its sister the 100 inch is not in service, nearby houses used to shake on the up and down strokes of that huge engine lol I do love beam engines, one of my Wilesco's has a German "meccano" kit with it to make a drilling rig which looks kinda like a beam engine but not the same :(

The stuart major beams are truly amazing engines. I like beam engines, but find I like the horizontals and the locomotives more..... but dang those major beams have a soft spot in my heart.
All academic of course, saying I "like ome more" is like saying I prefer a coke at 35* to a coke at 40*...... I like them all, just something to talk about haha!
    Hope you're well Keith.

When I sell my house, I am going to buy a Stuart Major Beam Engine, a new drilling machine - and I almost forgot ...... a Harley Davidson Trike }:-)))

@@keithappleton I'm looking into a Trike too, but I would have to sell my house too, so my Trike will be pedal or electric powered, I don't think I could get one steam powered.

There are some incredible models in this video. I love the one at 2:54. The engine Derek Built is the same craftsmanship quality of a full sized model. Is this a Stuart major?

, I could sit and watch a beam engine for hours. In a real working situation on a small engine like this, are they designed to run quickly or slowly? I could see all of those extra moving Parts becoming a problem at speed.

Have you ever had a bean engine with Cornish gear pass through your workshop?

When you see a huge or miniature triple expansion engine you can appreciate the engineering behind it. When you see a beam engine you think "well, that's interesting" and not much else. Too primitive to be of any real use anymore, except as a sleeping aid.
However if you were to buy one and set it up in your bedroom for that purpose, it would only be a matter of time before it ran out of water and blew up. So then you need to invest in a costly and complicated system to cool and condense the steam, collect it and then return it to the boiler automatically.
You could run it on compressed air, but it's just not the same.

Man, if you cannot appreciate the engineering Derrick did on that engine just because it's an obsolete beam vs a slightly less obsolete triple expansion, I feel bad for ya.
At model scale both are novelty items not really capable of practical use, so not sure why your comment seems to give off the vibe that triple expansions are a viable thing while beams are not.*Shrugs*

    Did you build this?
The main must have been a hit to cut . I’m not normally a fan of beam engines but this is clockwork

    • @keithappleton

I didn't build the Major Beam Engine.
