Definitely enjoyed the reaction. And extra props for getting that "In the Mood for Love/2046" Wong Kar-Wai reference. The whole "I would be glad doing taxes and laundry with you" scene is one of the strongest in the whole movie.

It's the best movie in recent years, they managed to catch lightning with this one: the writing, the directors, the cast, the crew, it all came together to create magic.

The most astonishing revelation was finding out that the entire VFX were done by only around 7 people!

5 actually, a large amount of the VFX were practical- as odd as that sounds. Like when Evelyn “travels” from the desk to the closet- that was all shot practically in slow motion. In the end, because it was shot during the pandemic, there was a lot of shots of Waymond speaking to Evelyn and Evelyn speaking to Waymond that were shot at different locations so that took some editing. Then all of the blue screen work, but everything was done with Premiere Pro. The total budget was reported to be 25 million but only 14.3 million was spent. This film alone proved, at least to me, that practical effects are cheaper and make for a better film.

Many smart decisions were made about how to shoot the movie, made in the first place for economy but they ended up delivering a better final result as well. Like, the decision to shoot everything (with a handful of exceptions as our reactor noted) within one office building saved a ton of time and money right there, as the Daniels knew how much of both is lost every time one moves to a new location. (In addition to all the obvious parts of the building, they built the apartment set there too, and set up offices and dressing rooms within it.) Or your apt description of the fights as having a "homemade" quality -- that was dead on! They got a RUclips team called Martial Club that specializes in emulating sequences from movies, and had them choreograph and perform those sequences (the brothers Andy and Brian Le were the fighters in the "grab the award" sequence). And having to wait 2 years for release because of the pandemic (they thought a theatrical release was essential, and I'm so sorry to have missed it in a theater) gave them time to really fine-tune the editing and similar elements.

Gongon spoke Cantonese, Evelyn and Waymond spoke Mandarin and English, Joy spoke English with broken Mandarin. It was used to symbolically depict tradition vs modernity. My favorite detail is that Alpha Gongon was willing to sacrifice everything that Gongon claimed to represent himself in order to stop the progression of Jobu. By the end, he was speaking English and wearing technology like an exosuit, a total hypocrite with no dignity or honor.

The note to Wong Kar Wai was deliberate. Not only do the Daniels love his work, but Ke Huy Quan (during his exile from Hollywood acting) worked on Wong's film crew!

Oh my.. What an incredible reaction and discussion.
    A truly mesmerizing movie.
Joice as Jobu represented by the everything-doughnut; nihilisticly giving up on the multiverse because she put everything on a donut but never finding anything to fill the hole of it and in her; and then meeting Evelyn who finds meaning in the smallest of things; is just the best symbolism in a movie I've ever seen. Evelyn embracing the googly eyes as her symbol perfectly counterfits the symbol of the doughnut; giving a fully filled in circle is just wow.

This movie and Birdman were the two movies that, in the past, would never even get mentioned as contenders for Best Picture. And they both won. What a time to be alive where art like this gets recognized at the highest level. This is my all time favorite movie, it bumped Eternal Sunshine to #2.

I only watched the reaction part yet. I need to thank you for that cause you were always ahead, reacting as a genuine human being. I watched tens of easy reactions, most of them proved emotionless. I'm just glad you're human enough, with brains & heart, to show what all this is all about. I wanted to watch a real being's reaction, not a youtuber daily work. It makes me more comfortable about some people throughout this nonsensical world. I feel less alone; so many thanks. Not here to "send you flowers"", I'm just touched, and I cried to your tears cause you proved with this material you had this heart. Now I will watch the other part. Thank you sir.

Great reaction, and great concluding discussion. In terms of your thoughts about movies with "messages" (a term I don't love, but I guess we don't have a better one) -- at this point, no movie is going to come up with a message that nobody has thought of before, there isn't going to be a new ideea. The challenge is to make us feel, as if for the first time, the truth of it. That's what has to happen, and what this movie does so brilliantly. There's nothing especially new about "be kind," for instance, or the idea that the mundane things in life (laundry and taxes) are what makes it worth something... and yet every reactor I've watched (me too) has been helplessly sobbing during Waymond's scenes saying those things. That's a real achievement. (And kudos to Ke Huy Quan for coming through there.)

That you said RUclips fan film is everything. The two trophy guys are the choreographers and are brothers. They started out with a RUclips stunt channel inspired by Jackie Chan. They got noticed and were asked to choreo the film

Same. Such a refreshing movie in what the cinema-world has to offer mostly these days. It's funny, entertaining, sad, deep, action-packed, satirical, and "all at once". This wild mix could easily have gone completely south, even more when you think about that the story is basically "just" a family/generation conflict drama. But they managed to make it work perfectly.

First time I heard what I consider to be the central point of the film articulated in words is sometime (years) before the movie came out. The RUclips channel Kurzgesagt made a video about the concept of Optimistic Nihilism. In which we accept that yes the universe and our existence in it has absolutely no inherent meaning. But as oppose to succumbing to the meaninglessness of it Optimistic Nihilism posits that in lieu of any meaning we are free to create our own. And what better meaning there could be then "be kind".
All of that to say that if I had to choose a moment in that film that solidified it in my mind as the best movie I ever watched it would be the scene where Waymond from our universe while having absolutely no idea what's going on and why everyone act the way they act still pleads with them (and us) to be kind.

This was a great reaction, one of the better that I've seen from reactors, and as this has become my favorite film of all time thus far, it means I've watched as many reactors reacting as I can (I still consider ANGELINA's as one of the best). You have very good cinematic insight, you used the term motif which I hardly ever hear anymore, and you're not averse to sharing your emotions. This imo puts you in the upper tier of reactors. I looked at your discography so to speak and it looks like you do a lot of shows and video games as well. You may want to consider either folding in more films, or creating a separate channel that focuses on films, because I think you'd have a lot to offer in that regard. Either way, subbed, and thank you for this reaction.

The "RUclips fan film" comment was sooo perceptive because the fight choreographers Andy and Brian Le got their start/big break from making martial arts RUclips videos I believe!! :D
