Hey guys, I did also try the BOTRK --> Black Cleaver --> Wits End build. I think this build is great for heavy front line (tank mids) where you also want to predominantly be split pushing in the mid game and not team fighting. Something to note with this build path is that it is very squishy and does not team fight as well.
Coach Curtis hey! Off topic but I really appreciate the great content and analysis!! If you have an opening for another video would you be able to do another Nocturne gameplay video or guide? All your videos are very helpful! Asking because I really enjoyed the interesting picks

Appreciate the kind words man :) Irelia is a tonne of fun, takes a while to get your head around but once you get the micro down she can be a climbing machine
All the videos and streams that I have watched up to this point to get to where I am at S4 have been awesome and definitely contributed heavily to me getting better at this game that I have come to love to play and enjoy. But let me explain what this man Coach Curtis is. All the how to play League and how to this or that are all the classes that you take for your basics at uni... freshman, sophomore year. Coach Curtis is the guy that you take for your career junior senior year. This man is is teaching but he is giving us Meat not milk. Honestly thank you so much for all of the content that you continue to put out there for us. I found this channel 4 months ago on how to win mid lane step by step and the rest as they say is history. I had to take a break all of February due to personal reasons but I am back on the grind and cant wait to climb and contiue to get better. Thank you so much Jett for the kind words, I really appreciate it. I hope that your Irelia really improves given you have watched this video so much haha.
Man, this channel is SO underrated. Needs WAY more credit. I don't even watch these videos for guides I watch the whole thing for fun. Keep it up Curtis amazing channel.
There are tons of videos out there on how to improve, but yours have to be some of the best. You do such a great job of not only discussing what you’re doing, but also why. This helps me understand the fundamental concepts behind your actions and the thought process leading to it as well. Particularly with wave management, which I struggle with. So often a guide will advise a course of action without explaining why, which feels like telling a child to look both ways before crossing the street without telling them why - to watch for cars. By telling me what you’re thinking about before doing something, and why you’re doing it, I’m actually able to understand how to incorporate it into my own gameplay. Keep it up, and thank you! I’m looking forward to learning more from you.
I have 160k mastery with irelia and used to play her a lot mid but always struggled with the team fights and lead transition but this guide helped so much that now you earned another sub and now i want to go back to mid because of this. I would also Looooooooveeee a vladimir guide cause i main him too, but good content keep up the great work.
Curtis! My favorite video so far with one of my favorite champs! I loved the detail to the team fights, which is where I struggled with her the most. After watching your vid, everything kinda clicked. Thanks for the great content man!
One of the best in-depth guides out there. Most videos on YT sais guide in the title but real all that they are is just a play though! This... this is a proper guide. Love it and would love to see more. Well done!
Really good educational video. I loved how you went into detail on so many of the plays and explained every step of the thought process. My only minor quibble is the fact that the cam is pretty big and covered some things I would have liked to see.
When you're on the topside of the midlane, I've noticed in a few videos now that sometimes a thing you're trying to show us, for instance a couple of Irelia E's in this video, can get obscured by your webcam. I think on this side you should maybe move your webcam to the top left so that we can see these things. Otherwise lots of great info for Irelia on this video. Cheers Coach !
This was the first video I've seen of yours and I really enjoyed this indepth guide, especially as a mid player who really enjoys playing Irelia (badly xD). It felt comprehensive and I appreciate that you used your own gameplay, talking about the things you're thinking through and even some mistakes or disagreements with how you played. I'm definitely going to check out more of your content!
Thanks mate for tuning in, glad I could help you out a bit with this one. It took me a while to figure out and ins and outs of this champ, she really is fun and great for soloq. If you have anymore questions feel free to @ me in the discord :)
I dont know if you are going to believe me, but im main support and climbing as supoort is so hard I started to play Irelia she is so cool but mechanics were so hard for me and unfamiliar i watched your video and after that i won my lane with irelia i was 11/3 U don't know how much you boosted my confidence!
Great video ! As an absolute beginner I find it extremely difficult to find videos where you actually explain what and why you are doing things !! All other videos on the web are extremely quick, fast speaking, talking as if pros are watching, while the title says "for beginners".... thank you for posting this video !!!
After abandoning my identity as a support main to become an ADC main, now I'm finally picking up mid and enjoying the role so much more. That's how I found your wave management video - and now this?! I am hoping to main Irelia and have picked up a lot, but this is the best guide hands down. THANK YOU. Could you perhaps make another video like this after her rework? It'd be so helpful. Even if not, this was way more informational that even recent Irelia guides.
I see you always using the two e casts right away. Her e is a great psychological pressure tool. Sometimes its useful to cast e + get 2 or 3 aa's in there + then e again. This usually always works because they're left trying to decide if to either dodge your e or trade with you. You can even q around minions to get those stacks up before laying down that second e cast. Late game you can even afford to "waste a q" by e -> use q to gap close before marking them with the second e cast -> get a few aa's and before you know it your q is back up again. That being said i still got good info from this video, mostly about macro gameplay, specifically that bit about that scuttle defense.
yeah i noticed that too you can use it either way and really e should be used in a variety of ways to keep your opponent guessing, i basically one trick irelia though and this guy is CLEARLY a better league player than me so with much fewer games on irelia his play is looking pretty solid on her because of his experience elsewhere, i have like 650 games on irelia and the only other thing i think i can criticize is he doesn't seem to save a backline minion for escape / prioritizes holding q over dropping it to get out of a bad trade. if things are going south gtfo even if it means dropping q. 17:15 is a good example, he didn't need to take that damage there.
Hey Curtis. I absolutely love you’re videos. You’re incredibly knowledgeable and the way you describes things make it very easy and enjoyable to follow along. Along with that, I can tell you’re very humble through your tone and well as your word choice and that’s a huge bonus. You’re a breath of fresh air into this scene and I can recommend you enough. Thank you, from all the league players who want to better themselves by knowing they have a lot to learn. I just wanted to point something out, as I’ve been practicing Irelia a lot as well as having seen this video 4 times now, at 22:38 you mention that rookie irelia players tend to Q-Q as soon as they hit their ultimate. You let us know that weaving in auto attacks and taking your time is the optimal path for higher sustained damage. I just wanted to point out that not only are you going to have a higher damage output, you will also follow up on the kill far more often. Since you don’t use your double Q right away, you can use the second Q to gap close. Much like Yasuo, waiting until the last second to cast your Last gap closing ability will net you in more kills. Just something I wanted to point out in addition to what you said :) Keep up the great work!
You are absolutely spot on with that comment, holding Q really makes it hard for the enemy to use flash as well. Appreciate the kind words Lucas and it really means a lot to me to hear this sort of feedback. I'll try to keep leveling up my game thanks so much mate
Coach Curtis so happy I found your channel randomly through my RUclips recommended. Your insight to wave control, map pressure and overall macro has significantly increased my ability to perform consistently and at a higher level. If I ever muster up the courage to actually play ranked I have a feeling I could finally achieve a rank that I could be somewhat proud of. You’re the man! Do you have a patreon or something? Would love to donate And sorry, just one more question. With the new changes to BOTRK, it seems Irelia’s build path has shifted to BOTRK- tri- deaths dance. Do you agree with that path? Or do you still think Tiamat is better?
Thanks so much. I found your channel because I was studying up on Diana recently. Now to see my main, Irelia, is perfect! You produce the best instructional content for league.
Hello! I'm just starting to get back into league after playing mostly on s3 and s4. I appreciated the in depth explanation and going back over the same situation a few times to do a deep analysis. Thanks so much for the insight on a really sweet champion!
Hey Curtis, this video is even better than I was looking for! There are too many of these pro faker replays. They're really cool to watch but not very good to learn how to play Irelia because I can't understand why he does the things that he's doing. I especially like to see how you analyze why you're doing the things you're doing and also what kinds of things to look out for. Subscribed. plz more Irelia vids
Awesome tutorial!! I remember playing Irelia mid back then only because TF blade and other challengers were doing it in streams way back, glad to see someone has a tutorial for it! Haha
Learning Irelia thanks for this Coach Just wanted to say your matchup sheet was really helpful at 4:30 - lots of websites have different opinions on counters so it can be confusing to guess but a lot easier to see it on your channel as I trust your opinion way more anyway Thanks for that, think it really helps the champion guide
@@adamnesbitt11 Yes. I believe the purpose of a Mid Irelia is to allways have lane prio and that will give the jg a big relief. Darius is mainly for top lane, but if you see an Irelia mid and you are 100% sure she is going mid you can pick darius and she is technically useless. No lane prio and extremely flip coin to go 1v1.
Just finished this 1 hour video analysis and I think this video will help me improve a lot. I'm actually having a hard time playing her at top lane against tahm kench players but I'll try and give her a shot at mid lane. I just unlocked her and been practicing games at normal games cause her Q reset every minion kill makes me feel like a pro Irelia player lol. Thanks for the tip about level 1 Q stack trades. I wasn't doing that before cause I just want to scale until late game. I didn't know her early game was that strong.
31:00 if he dies before you, he still get the xp, even if he's dead. It's a part of riots "comeback mechanics" or rubber band effect. If they didn't have that sort of stuff then people risk getting sad because they fall behind
@@CoachCurtis after few loses on ranked games, back to this video again, now i found what's my problem. I always blindly hold the minion wave on my side and giving my opponent roam opportunites and i lose the games.😂😂🤦🏻♂️
@@henrythew9781 It's all about finding the right balance between pushing and exerting pressure OR setting up ganks and solo kills by holding the wave on your side :)
really good guide, was able to learn a bunch of new things despite having played her a lot already! keep going, I hope this channel will grow very soon! P.S.: your voice and the way you talk is so relaxing!
My 2. Game with Irelia in Draft Pick ended for me with an score of 8/0/3 and 10 cs/min. The Yasuo i faced was not that good ngl. Btw i love ur detailed guides and explanation of every singel step ingame. Thank you
Hello Curtis ! Hope that you are doing great. So firstly, thx for the video this is really great to see and learn irelia ! I try to play here in normal game but it’s really difficult and I int a lot, do u thing I shoud keep training her or stop use her because she is to weak in this meta ? Thx for your answer !
I have been playing a very fun build recently - actually i tried it out in practice tool and at full items it is the second most dps build possible on irelia. It needs to be played midlane because youre building manamune first and you cant hang in the toplane without blade first item anymore usually. So you build muramana>blade>wits end or black cleaver>if u got wits before take cleaver now> ideally deaths dance, but you can go tank item. U got crazy dps (1.3k at full build with stacks), around 110 armor and mres and around 2.4k health, also you never run out of mana because of muramana. What do you guys think?
Hey, Coach Curtis. Many irelia otps stopped buying tiamat and instead rush BOTRK. The current build lacks HP but is sustain-oriented. The core build is BOTRK into Wit's End into DD into Frozen Heart into a situational item. Do you think Tri-force or BC are still a viable choice on Irelia? I feel i'm not tanky enough to engage. Also, do you think inspiration as a secondary tree outperforms resolve; that is, demolish/overgrowth? I hope you reply to this as i really need to know. Also, you're doing an amazing work! I learnt a great deal from your videos!
Hey, love ur vids I was wondering specificallg on the taliyah matchup, how do u navigate that? I agree with 90% of ur list but I just can’t seem to ever beat taliyah. I am low dia and extremely confident in my irelia micro, was watching the vid for more how to press he leads I often get on her. But what I find happening with taliyah specifically is that she just stands a million miles away from the wave, q farms (or whatever ability her shooting is) and if I try to fly through wave she’ll tether max range of my q and just walks away getting free rock poke. Idk maybe I’m just not that good but I feel like I can confidently beat most matchups except for taliyah and cassio
Hey man great question, the thing with Taliyah is that she should never really be able to push and roam, and if she pushes up deep into the lane she should be majorly threatened. The thing is it should be very easy to prep the caster creeps for Q's since you can just stand on the other side of the minion to AA it. Another tip for Taliyah is pay attention to the amount of worked ground, once the lane has been going on for a little she will have less and less room to get full Q's and will be only shooting 1 at a time which lessens the amount of threat she has on you. The main windows for this matchup is when you are 6, at 6 she really can't afford to push up in the lane at all. Even if you hit 6 and attempt all in and blow flash, the 2nd time you go even without R you should be able to kill. Another strategy once you get tiamat/mercs, you can just push her in and pink the dot brush and sit in river and try to pick her if she tries to follow. Hopefully this helps..
Coach Curtis thanks a lot man that helps It also rlly hurts me that she’s one of those champs I still don’t rlly understand, like when her rocks are machine guns and when they just shoot one out but regardless thanks cause I’m used to playing itelia hella aggro cause I feel like if I let the game go slowly I eventually get useless so nice to know that chilling to 6 is a solid strat
Could u do an in-depth Annie guide? Ik people say shes a brain dead champion but I still feel like you would have some valuable insight that I could def use as an Annie player. P.S. looking studious my dude -O--O-
Thanks for noticing my new glasses :) I probably won't do an Annie guide for quite a while since I have so many other videos lined up unfortunately. But I appreciate you tuning in man, hopefully I helped you out a bit here
i have already played for more than 20 matches but i still cant go one on one with any champion who has a ranged attack(basically AP damage types , mages) or ranged ability (like pyke, talon, ekko)
I play a quite bit of Irelia and your build is exactly what I usually build, but I'm seeing the a lot of Bork then Wits End rush. I feel like that would be squishy as.
Hey man, yeah I'd say that build is better for top lane. I've tried it out as well, it's better at killing front line and better in the side lane but you are very squishy and you don't teamfight as well with the build.
@@CoachCurtis btw what do u think bout graves mid? Is actually so hard the triple shot and stuff... i heard its really strong and LS is spamming it atm. He also teaches LEC playere graves. I used to main him in jg years ago. Dunno if I wanna give it a chance. Btw if youd like to see my opinion... id love ekko guide, azir, yasuo. Thanks man !
thanks for the vid. can you do another vid on kassadin and how to 1v9? Some kassadin's in high elo skip ROA and go straight to seraphs and lichbane, etc. because they say you have a better early. Can you explain when to itemize like this? thanks mate
I can do one in the future for sure. The main benefit of going straight into seraphs is that you don't have to spend gold on durability stats like HP. So if you are in an easy matchup in lane (e.g Ahri/vlad etc), going this aggressive ap build makes a lot of sense , since you don't need the durability for laning phase anyway
Coach Curtis Thanks for replying. Ive also watched a bunch of vids on kassadin and how you have to be really greedy with him (like the majority of your team dying so you can live and get 1 kill kind of greedy). Do you think this is true with him or should I play for my teammates and potentially die and let them try to carry?
@@7sage469 You basically always have to play greedily on Kassadin, that just the way the champs identity is. You need a lot of resources and if you get behind in xp/gold you are going to be quite useless..
Spend a lot of time in practise tool, on dummys and moving around until it feels really natural, then go into norms and then slowly into ranked. It took me a long time to get the hang of it

For sure man, thanks for reaching out. Appreciate the support :)
if you build BOTRK > Wits End against AP you can actually survive quite a lot and deal an immense amount of damage.
Also I try to build Sterak or Frozen Mallet after this two items and the champion gets a little bit tankier.
its bork rush any good?, thinking bork into tri steraks titanic. (not building tiamat early)

I think on this side you should maybe move your webcam to the top left so that we can see these things. Otherwise lots of great info for Irelia on this video. Cheers Coach !
Yeah I actually noticed this.. Thanks for pointing this out and I'll do something about it in my next videos. Appreciate the feedback mate.
I dont know if you are going to believe me, but im main support and climbing as supoort is so hard
I started to play Irelia she is so cool but mechanics were so hard for me and unfamiliar i watched your video and after that i won my lane with irelia i was 11/3 U don't know how much you boosted my confidence!
Thanks so much for sharing this with me man, glad I could help you out!
Great video ! As an absolute beginner I find it extremely difficult to find videos where you actually explain what and why you are doing things !! All other videos on the web are extremely quick, fast speaking, talking as if pros are watching, while the title says "for beginners".... thank you for posting this video !!!
Awesome to hear man, glad I could help you out Krasi :) My pleasure
I tried these things and held my own for the first time in about 30 games. I was owning the guy on my game after watching this video lol thanks
love it! Thanks for sharing man
After abandoning my identity as a support main to become an ADC main, now I'm finally picking up mid and enjoying the role so much more.
Just something I wanted to point out in addition to what you said :)
Keep up the great work!
Would love to donate
And sorry, just one more question. With the new changes to BOTRK, it seems Irelia’s build path has shifted to BOTRK- tri- deaths dance. Do you agree with that path? Or do you still think Tiamat is better?
Wanted to learn Irelia. Found this. I learned so much about the champion and the game, thank you so much!
Omg man! I spent like 20 games today inting on irelia, trying to figure her out, then saw your vid and it's all clear now. Thanks, mate!
No problem :)
Thanks so much. I found your channel because I was studying up on Diana recently. Now to see my main, Irelia, is perfect! You produce the best instructional content for league.
No problem at all mate, glad I could help you out on Diana and now Irelia :) Appreciate the kind words
Hands down best coach out there that doesn't expect anything back except a like.
My pleasure mate
Want to see more of this. Your champion guides are the best around.
One of the best guide you can find about Irelia for sure ! Greatly helped me to understand what i do wrong in teamfight, thanks 😎
hey i just wanted to say you can buy sheen early too that makes you one hit the caster minion with Q :)
Wow I wanted to get into irelia and was hype to find you have a video on her!
This is dope! Just pure amazement at the detailed breakdowns!👏
My pleasure man!
Thanks for the support man! Will see what I can do :)
Coach: now this might be quite long
Future Coach: oh my sweet summer child…
Awesome tutorial!! I remember playing Irelia mid back then only because TF blade and other challengers were doing it in streams way back, glad to see someone has a tutorial for it! Haha
My pleasure mate!
Learning Irelia thanks for this Coach
Just wanted to say your matchup sheet was really helpful at 4:30 - lots of websites have different opinions on counters so it can be confusing to guess but a lot easier to see it on your channel as I trust your opinion way more anyway
Thanks for that, think it really helps the champion guide
My pleasure man thanks for tuning in!
Fantastic vid man! I learned a lot, especially about teamfighting and micro.
This Video got me by making me play Irelia and I am thankful to Curtis for making this
My pleasure man!
I hope we get a S13 guide for irelia!
I like that you went over everything we need to kner.
awesome. Nice work, keep that up. You are really helping people out there with such detailed guides :)
Would love to see one of these types of detailed guides on someone like yasuo, keep up the sick content
I'll try do more aggressive champs :) Ekko is my next one
I would definitely add Darius as the biggest counter Irelia has. Excelent guide.
In the midlane?
I didn't know her early game was that strong.
this video helped so so so much , made more aware and do more damage more efficiently, thank you
You make the best guides man, keep it up!
31:00 if he dies before you, he still get the xp, even if he's dead.
It's a part of riots "comeback mechanics" or rubber band effect. If they didn't have that sort of stuff then people risk getting sad because they fall behind
I freakin love you 😊🤗🤩 thank you for releasing this ! I've been trying to find a great in depth info video but couldn't! I appreciate you!
No problem at all Millie, glad I could help you out with this one!
Oh sweeeeeet😍
I have been playing irelia mid recently and struggling how to play it properly.
Thanks for tuning in Henry :) Appreciate it and glad I could help you out
@@CoachCurtis after few loses on ranked games, back to this video again, now i found what's my problem.
I can't believe I missed this I love irellia!!!! Thank you so much
No problem man!
really good guide, was able to learn a bunch of new things despite having played her a lot already! keep going, I hope this channel will grow very soon!
P.S.: your voice and the way you talk is so relaxing!
Thank you very much man appreciate it! Glad I could help you out mate
Amazing vid dude. Looking forward to practice Irelia.

My 2. Game with Irelia in Draft Pick ended for me with an score of 8/0/3 and 10 cs/min. The Yasuo i faced was not that good ngl. Btw i love ur detailed guides and explanation of every singel step ingame. Thank you

Pls upload more with other champs
Nice little video!
Really good irelia helped me alot thankyou.
Another awesome vid keep up the good work
Thanks Matthew appreciate it mate
Appreciate your work :)
S13 guide please!
Can we get a new version of this after rework?
New look coach? Lookin good
Thanks man , new glasses :)
God i wish i've watch it before my last 15 plays as irelia hahahha Thanks so much, really great information
Hahaha I know the feel don't worry. Glad I could help you out :)
Lol what the heck idk why I didn’t check your channel for an irelia guide I have been wanting to pick her up so bad
Hahaha yeah it was a while ago!
Man you look like Coluche so much, he's a French legend of comedy.
I do a bit hahah
I dont see it that much 😂😂
I started picking up irelia and kinda inting and after watching this vid and my 15th game on irelia, i got my first A! Next is S 🙏
Great guide thank you
this video in a nutshell: "It is what it is"
hey man thanks for the vid I rlly appreciate it
No problem mate :)
good guide coach !!
Thanks Nam!
Hey, love ur vids
I was wondering specificallg on the taliyah matchup, how do u navigate that?
Coach Curtis thanks a lot man that helps
It also rlly hurts me that she’s one of those champs I still don’t rlly understand, like when her rocks are machine guns and when they just shoot one out but regardless thanks cause I’m used to playing itelia hella aggro cause I feel like if I let the game go slowly I eventually get useless so nice to know that chilling to 6 is a solid strat
@@god4943 Glad I could help you out man
Love the vids!!! Id love to see a kassadin guide, although i know you really dont play or like him much :(
I already have a video on Kassadin if you haven't checked it out already :)
You sir earned a sub
Could u do an in-depth Annie guide? Ik people say shes a brain dead champion but I still feel like you would have some valuable insight that I could def use as an Annie player.
P.S. looking studious my dude -O--O-
Thanks for noticing my new glasses :)
I probably won't do an Annie guide for quite a while since I have so many other videos lined up unfortunately. But I appreciate you tuning in man, hopefully I helped you out a bit here
i have already played for more than 20 matches but i still cant go one on one with any champion who has a ranged attack(basically AP damage types , mages)
or ranged ability (like pyke,talon,ekko)
Holy fk your really underrated bro thanks for the vid love it! 😊
I mained Irelia thanks to this vid
best guide
tysm
Glad I couldve help a bit with this vid! 👍
Thanks for you're input man appreciate it :) This one took a lot of grinding
@@CoachCurtis ye, the vid is awesome tho :D
@@CoachCurtis btw what do u think bout graves mid? Is actually so hard the triple shot and stuff... i heard its really strong and LS is spamming it atm. He also teaches LEC playere graves. I used to main him in jg years ago. Dunno if I wanna give it a chance. Btw if youd like to see my opinion... id love ekko guide, azir, yasuo. Thanks man !
@@danseps I'll have to look into it, but I am working on an ekko and azir guide :)
@@CoachCurtis ye, Im super excited For these 2
Your content is quality af.
Thanks Jacob appreciate you tuning in :)
thanks for the vid. can you do another vid on kassadin and how to 1v9?
You need a lot of resources and if you get behind in xp/gold you are going to be quite useless..
great job video
how do u manage to land your e all the time ? i am very bad with that skill any advice ?
Spend a lot of time in practise tool, on dummys and moving around until it feels really natural, then go into norms and then slowly into ranked. It took me a long time to get the hang of it
4:24 ooohhhh big fight
4:26 pop-up
*pika face*
Just kidding though, love this content!
Hi coach! Will you make a pyke mid guide in the future? I love that champ
I've had a few requests for this champ, in the future for sure :)
