  • @troypwr
    @troypwr Год назад +4

    Toughness is much needed but can one side of the ball carry the entire team? The biggest problem is that Riley runs a soft program regardless of who's running the defense. If he's not going 1s on 1s at least once a week then the toughest defensive coach in the county isn't going to toughen up the O line or the team's identity. That has to come from the very top. IF and that's a big IF, Riley commits to toughening up in general then a coach like Leonhard could do wonders.

  • @TheDeadlyKnight

    low key another reason this could work is it would possibly provide a viable future in-house option for USC if Lincoln Riley ever succeeds, establishes a championship culture & gets restless/goes to NFL. He’s an extremely dynamic young coordinator who has built an absolute beast in Michigan’s defense. He would be an outstanding fit at USC and would be a recruiting dynamo. Also, he would be a good fit with Riley and his staff. If Lincoln Riley is smart, there is only one person for the job: Jesse Minter. Period.

Even if you don't have talented players your defense, if put in the right positions, will be tougher and make plays. I wonder if they practice tackling. I don't see players breaking down when they come up to TRY to make a tackle. I see the Ole' wiff move. I am hoping something changes soon. 🙏

    I could get behind Leonhard, but I would like to know how savvy he is in terms of in-game adjustments, when the game plan goes south. USC's defense currently lacks in that area. And, in fact, because what we are doing on D is so scattered and messy anyway, it would be hard to spot if we ARE currently making any defensive adjustments!

    • @MarkReitan
      @MarkReitan Год назад

      Jim Leonhard is masterful with in game adjustments..... There were multiple games where the Badgers were being beat at first in a game and by the end of the first quarter things would change and the defense was lights out. Yes, there were exceptions to that scenario, but it was because of key people being hurt on defense, etc. Rest assured, he's a brilliant guy, he's see everything an offense can throw at a defense and as long as he has the right type of players on the team, they will adjust just fine.

  • @MarkReitan
    @MarkReitan Год назад

    As a University of Wisconsin graduate, I watched Jim Leonhard play in Madison and followed his professional career. Without a doubt, he is the best defensive coordinator in the country. (college or pro football). At Madison, he was selected as an All American three years in a row for his play on the field. But what many people don't know is that he was an academic All American for four years..... As a head coach, Rex Ryan got to know Leonhard when they both were with the Baltimore Ravens. When Ryan took the head coaching job with the New York Jets, one of the first things he did was to demand that the front office get Jim to leave the Ravens and join the Jets. Ryan considered Leonhard to be the smartest player he has ever coached.... he felt that having Leonhard on the field was like having an extra coach out there with the players. Jim recently took the job at Illinois so that his three sons could stay in school in Madison. He's ready for the next big challenge in his life. If USC is able to recruit him, I can assure you, the Trojans will be dramatically improved team on defense. Dave Aranda is a good second choice, but simply not as good as Leonhard.

    To my knowledge, Leonhard's worst defense was top 30. So he's very consistent in making his defenses stout and hard to overcome.
    If Riley stays, he needs to drop the OC job and give it to someone else. He clearly can't be a HC and OC at the same time. And realistically, coaches can't do it at all. They may fill in for a brief moment when needed, but never full time.

      No thanks. No first time head coaches. Jonathan Smith & Mike Elko should be at the top of the list. If USC can steal Mike Norvell that would be nice. Or if Urban Meyer wants to coach college again. I would still like Luke Fickell as well, but he’s more interested in his alma mater Ohio St or his “Dream” school Notre Dame.

      @mattrancho Urban Meyer, for like the 10th time, has said he doesn't want to coach again. No ifs about it

      @@greg7964 u actually believe that. Riley days he wasn’t leaving Oklahoma multiple times. So gullible. But he’s not my top choice, he is old. Meyer said he is done coaching many times before taking the Ohio st job as well.

    Consider the immediate and dramatic change in ucla defense with the hiring of a Ravens coach. Perhaps SC could offer that demonstrable success in re-establishing a moribund team. 6:51

    My vote for DC for USC is Rob Ryan. For those who don't know Rob Ryan is Rex Ryans brother, both are sons of the legend Buddy Ryan! All coached in the NFL.

    Who would former head coach & ex-Trojan coach Ed Ogeron recommend??? What former DC is familiar with California recruits - HS + jucos?

    If it happens, Leonard would be a really good choice. Dont know if he has interest in CFB or NFL...Big 10 experience desirable. Phil Parker? Dave Aranda? Coach O, a Trojan fan candidate (Double threat as DC and Mondo Recruiter)? Hopefully, the AD will weigh in heavy on the issue.

    Leonhard was great at Wisconsin, but he ain’t doing much as a defensive analyst at illinois, which is ranked 93rd in total defense. Have you looked into Joe Harasymiak at Rutgers? His defense is #8 rn and when he was at Minnesota in 2021 his defense was 3rd in the country. Besides, isn’t our offense in the hurt locker lately? What do you make of Coach Riley missing two practices due to unknown illness?

    It simply grates on me that this season has turned out the way it has. This has been such a letdown I literally wish this dumpster fire of a season would end! I'm all in on this Jim Leonard idea, at least something good would come out of this season. Somethings got to give and quick!

    If we cannot get Leohard my 2nd choice is Joe Rossi from Minnesota. Third is Diaz from Penn St. We need a DC that is experienced in the Big 10.

    I like the information on his schemes. The only way we land him is if we are currently talking to him and making promises. He seems like a guy who would like to remain in the BIG10, so USC moving there next year would be a good selling point. I think they also need to target new D-Line and LB coaches. USC will need to pony up some capital to bring in the quality of hire they are used to. I wonder if @TrojanBlade thinks there are any NFL defensive coaches or coordinators USC should target?

      Possibly someone from a team that has had really good defenses the last few years like the 49ers. UCLA's new DC came from the Ravens, who always have really good defenses. Same with what Jim Harbaugh did in 2021, bringing in Mike MacDonald from the Ravens.

    Jim Leonard (Wisc) would be a an Excellent Defensive Coord Choice for USC....Other great DCs. choices would be: Tom Allen (Ind), Bryan Brown (Louis) Jack Del Rio (Was), & Dave Arranda (Bayl) & Troy Polomalu as Special Def.Plyr Dev. Coach
