The guy you want is K- State DC Joe Klanderman. He does alot with 3 star guys and the K state defense has a pattern of getting better as the season goes along. K-state won the big 12 last season and ended up in a bowl game against Alabama. K-State is ranked #22 in total defense this season giving up 18 PPG
Any of the top 5 guys would be good but I think Aranda would be an especially good fit if he’s looking to come back to LA and build up his reputation. Though who knows… there’s probably other mid majors out there willing to roll the dice on him as an HC.

Dude! Nick Holt was bald and he was an outstanding DC at USC during his time there. He got shellacked at Washington and that was at the height of Steve Sarkissian's drinking problems. If we could have a bald-headed guy who performed like Holt did, we'd be in good shape.

David Aranda just signed a 6 year extension in 2020. He's signed thru 2029. His reported buyout is in the neighborhood of 24-30 million. They are not going to fire him after 1 bad year. I think they give him 1 more year on a short leash. He likes Baylor. I don't see him leaving on his own and walking away from that big contract. If Dave does get fired. I think he takes a TV job and waits a year for another HC job. I don't see him going back his DC job. He won't need to rush his decision with that buyout.
This is a good take on the situation. I did remember hearing about him signing an extension I just didn't know the specifics. I think school are gearing up for next year when the playoff is expanded. They are looking for a coach that can get them there. 24-30 million to buy out a coach is not much nowadays especially when you look at the pay structure for the buy out. Like how much is owed up front and how are the payments spread out over time. I think gone are the days when a coach can stay employed just by continuing getting his team bowl eligible ever year. Now it is CFP or bust even for schools that have no history past nor recent success to warrant such a mentality.
I had Luke Fickell #1, But James Franklin & Dave Aranda were as high in my list. Kyle Whittingham was another name I liked as well as Matt Campbell. For me, the only issue at that time with Aranda was lack of experience. I wanted to see how he recruits & who he recruits & how can he sustain success with his players. So far not looking so good. Obviously Urban Meyer was a long shot but he would of been #1 if it weren’t for the off the field shenanigans in 2021 (I knew the USC admin wouldn’t hire him after that).

I don’t think there’s a step forward for him right now, or even a lateral step available for him right now. Many fired HC’s take coordinator positions, if nothing else than to stay in the game and show what they can do until another HC offer comes their way. And with USC’s defense, there’s nowhere to go but up.

Can anyone put a price tag on having the number one defense in the nation and getting us to the national championship? USC‘s annual revenue just increased by over $80 million per year in one year. I think they can afford to pay Aranda an extra one or $2 million a year if that’s what it takes to generate a top five defense in the nation. Heaven knows we don’t spend any money on handing bags of cash to high school players as other colleges do so we can afford to pay a top defensive coordinator four to $5 million a year to live in the greatest part of the nation.

Would Riley's ego even let this happen? Sometimes I wonder how many NC's could have been won if Pete Carroll wouldve kept Norm Chow as OC. Rumors have always said his ego was too big to share the spotlight with Chow and wanted Kiff/Sark to seal HIS legacy. We could only dream of a Riley/Aranda duo in the same vein, IF theyd share the spotlight.

Love the guy, but he’s a horrible hire for USC. We need an alpha male DC, not a Zen DC. Our players are soft enough under Momma Riley, who doesn’t believe in accountability. We don’t need quiet and passive DC. I’ve watched ever Baylor game over past 3 years and attended 4 home games. Sat right behind Baylor bench. Aranda barely says a word and never shows emotion. Baylor players laughing and playing around on the sideline while they’re down by 3 touchdowns. I was embarrassed for them. Zero accountability on that team.
