I wouldn't assume that you are going to see everything he did at ucla for us. Main thing is that he leverages our talent and schemes to it. Our D backs are the strength and I just hope we get the rotation right on the D line. Expect to see some early Meyer along with the improved Bear. I'd say we are about 50% better this year and by November with healthy guys, over 60% better. Saw top 30 come bowl time instead of bottom 30.
Lynn did say the defense would change from week to week depending on who we played which is cause for celebration after 2 years of hard headed coaching from Grinch 😂
😂😂 love the pics of grinch and the music, so perfect. Your explanation of Lynn’s defense was spot on. Loved this video keep up the great work and FTFO ✌️✌️
Great video. The thing I like about Lynn's scheme approach and the rest of the defensive staff is that they're taking simple schemes and making them look complicated, and that's going to force offensive errors. Correction on one part of the video. USC plays UM 3 weeks after LSU. USC plays USU in week 2, but then they have a bye in week 3 before heading to Ann Arbor in week 4. So our guys will be rested. And barring any serious injuries, our guys will be healthy.
So from the film you showed, some of the looks are some combo coverages and some are combo reads. “Palms”, read 2-1 for SS & CB with N playing inside keying #3. “Stubbie” where CB is man on #1 and N, SS and MLB play #2 & #3 (strong side). BS, CB & WLB can play #1 and #2/RB (weak side) vs a 3x1 look. I coach defensive football and one of the basic ways to identify a coverage is to look at the safeties. Understand their alignment and footwork. Safeties do lie a bit but it’s a start. Corners, however, tell you the truth more times than not, especially in college. Their alignment to the #1, footwork, and eyes pre-snap will tell you if it’s man or zone. D’Anton Lynn was very specific about giving opposing offenses the same looks so they couldn’t get a good read. As a defensive coach and defensive coordinator in high school, QBs aren’t smart and most college QBs fit in that category as well. They rely on talent to bail them out most of the time so it’s all about created a second of doubt and when you can, your chances of winning the game increase.
I have no issues with the offense, they will always score but with the new DC and it's defensive schemes, i have more confidence with our new defensive staff, they definitely will get the defense ready on day one. ✌️✌️
Lynn is the son of Antony Lynn which means his biggest influence is REX RYAN. Ryan is the son of Buddy - the mastermind of old - and Rex created the Ravens Psycho Package and pretty much the Ravens D that everyone's starting to go back to now that they've got all the Saban/Belichick Match Coverage stuff down today. Rex loves pressure - press & m2m coverage - but will also mix a lot of zone blitzing. His brother Rob Ryan is a genius at mixing looks/coverages/pressure and is sort of ahead of the game. Many feel he is too risky, but that's a lack of understanding. So Lynn has an incredible Mix of Coverage and Pressure.Yes, the Ryans are 2 Gap guys - but don't have to be. Romeo Crennel (Belichick) is another influence - 2 gapper again - but Gus Bradley has serious influence on Lynn as well. He's more 1 gap slash - get to the QB w/o blitz and mixing coverages. Again, Lynn will do it all. And what's really cool - when I say all - I mean ALL. He's bringing back some traditional Qtrs style coverages and also the Match Up Zone (different than Match - see below). He mixes old school with new school and fools the QB and apparently the Trojan Blade with his pressure/coverage mixes. BTW, USC was "out of it" by this game - last game of a horrible yr. So bad tape for a look at usc (for instance, your C was not THAT bad) - the morale was horrible at this point. They had a layoff and a change in personnel and attitude and did a great job in the bowl against an overrated team. Here's what I see w/ Lynn's coverages in this video. I even break down the quick looks early in the video - don't know if the looks were the same post - snap. As you will see, Lynn can shift post snap into a different scheme. 1:30 - Qtrs or 2Match look w/ press to the boundary 2:10 - 3Match look 2:40 - 2Match look w/ press to boundary 3:09 - Man Free (Cover 1 m2m) Press 3:15 - 2 Press look 3:30 - 1 Press Heavy Box 4:41 - 3Match or old school 3Man / (not 1Man) - Look at the wide CB technique - outside leverage - thats cover 3 tech - the boundary CBs have inside leverage which is m2m tech. LB following TE looks more m2m than match (hook on to man after pattern distribution). 5:05 - 2 Press look into an Inverted 2 Match w/ a robber - can see the corners dropping out of press - safety drops down - nickel races back to deep half - it actually looks like Lynn dropped into an old school 2 Match Up Zone (slightly different than pure match coverage - stay in zone but match to the man). You could see the QB looking to the middle of the field but got fooled by the robber. 5:40 - Man Qtrs - NOT C2! - Qtrs is NOT C4 as it's so erroneously assumed - in Qtrs the Safeties are very aggressive with their eyes and will play shallow and come down hard on short passes and runs - it's also a match coverage scheme - not zone - so everyone has an assignment - in this Qtrs Scheme it's obviously m2m as you can see from the CBs. Man Qtrs is sort of old school today for Qtrs schemes.
Like any defense, it will come down to the personnel you work with. Both UCLA and Notre Dame schemed USC the best. We were not much of a running threat, so it was easier for opponents to focus more on what we did-throwing the ball behind a weak line. Add to that a super quarterback who appeared to rabbit when you contained and took away the 10+ pass, and the results were evident. I do like the flexibilty of this multi adjust, read/react defensive scheme, as opposed to the previous attack/high risk technique.
Gabe, you hit on something at the end of the video which I initially was curious about also. That being how this scheme will hold up against a solid running attack. So I went back and looked at the tape. The game UCLA played Oregon State was pretty disturbing. I recommend taking a look! Thank you Gabe!
Just by being more gap sound, and having competent defensive minds as coaches we will improve but I’m really worried about our interior d line and the linebackers
Love this concept of video. I think it would be beneficial for the viewers if you were able to draw using your cursor so we can see visually what you are describing, just like they do on game day ✌🏻
I hope people realize LSU will be run heavy (2 OL projected 1st round with 3 talented TEs and a boatload of RBs). If USC is running only 2-3 DLs, it’s gonna be a LONG night
Until consistent, convincing evidence to the contrary is shown on the field during games, WE STINK. The big questions, regardless of the scheme: (1) can we tackle? Ever? Signs point to no. (2) Can we cover the middle of the field? Doesn't look like it. (3) Can we stop RBs from turning the corner and scampering for 30+ yards? Well, no. We can't. (4) Can we stop QBs from lumbering past our clueless linebackers for another first down? Nope. And (5) Can we stop letting teams score in the last 2 minutes of ANY half? No sir, we cannot. Golly it's gonna be a fun year!
I keep saying it over and over that UCLA defense was way more talented than your current defense. Those guys had played lots of football together. You guys bring one starter back on the DL. This reminds me of Kelly's first year at LSU, we nearly replaced the entire defensive starters and you could see at times something was a miss leading to some blowout losses. LSU will be the most physical team USC plays all year and I suspect our OL and running will eventually wear down your defense opening up the passing game. LSU is going to dominate this game and mitigate your offense by chewing the clock. Now go ahead and try to convince me otherwise wise.
@@timothydesanto5822 I’d say he’s still one of the better interior pass rushers. Way faster than most interior d linemen his size. Use the BEST OLine in the country to control LOS and run the ball. Once they bring extra safety into the box, use that great WR corps to do damage over the top. When the move the safety back to regular spot. rinse and repeat.

Same defense Tressel likes at Wisconsin. It’s good if playing from tie to ahead in game. Not so much against strong running teams.
