    At the 93’ trading camp in Big Bear, I played basket ball with Marty and Wayne Gretzky. The whole time Wayne kept saying,” Marty, the little shit’s a goalie! The little shit’s a goalie Marty!” The next day Marty brought me, my wife and daughter into the scrimmage, bought us food and sat us by the bench. He’s an intelligent, class act.

      @michaelr.4878 5 лет назад +6

      Yeah, that incident was very unfortunate and marred his imagine in the eyes of a lot of 'casual' fans and/or people that don't follow our great sport. Casual fans/non-fans simply saw it as one player hitting another player over the head with his stick. It is funny how you don't hear people running Bobby Clarke's vicious slash on Kharlamov from 1972 and what kind of series changer that was. If anything Clarke was/is considered a hero for what he did, as he took one for the team. Or in that case, he took one for our country. Yet McSorley is viewed as a criminal by the casual fans, still to this day.

    Some clown called Marty “an elite goon”. Marty was no goon. With the kings he led the NHL in plus/minus tied with TFleury at a plus 48 or 50. Marty once had 15 goals in one season mostly on defense with the Kings. 7 goals and 35 assists also with the kings. No goon puts up those types of numbers. And yes he once had 399 penalty minutes with the Kings. When Jay Miller was traded to the Kings it lessened the burden on Marty to have to drop the gloves every night. Marty was able to develop more of a well rounded game. It’s hard to believe it’s been 30 years this month Staggering to believe but without Marty in game 7 against Toronto the Kings don’t make it to the Stanley Cup Finals 1992-93. Wayne got the hat trick but Marty played one of the best games of his life!!!! Compare Marty’s career stats to those of his peers: Stu Grimson ,Darren Langdon,Dave Brown, Sandy McCarthy etc. Marty is way ahead on Goals and Assists.

    On RUclips it’s called Mcsorley vs McCarthy round 2. It was a preseason game played in San Diego September of 1995. I was sat in the front row three seats down from the goal judge. I mentioned to my sisters 2nd husband also Marty that Marty and Sandy had a scrap about two nights earlier perhaps in Phoenix but had ended before it got started. Kings Coach Larry Robinson had Mart playing right-wing that night Sandy was playing left wing for Calgary. It’s rare but both centers were thrown out of the face-off at the same time. So in one motion Marty and Sandy took the face off and dropped their gloves and sticks. It started right in front of me the combatants drifted all the way over to the benches and then all the way across the ice to just in front of the penalty boxes. It lasted about 3 minutes and at the end Sandy clearly turns his head to the linesman and nods. The majority of fans were pro kings and started chantingMarty Marty Marty”. Two tough and proud warriors going at it. The best kind of hockey fight. Both men landed several hellacious punches but kept coming back for more. Nobody was seriously injured. And O was there to see it all in the front row. And it was only an exhibition game. And yes Mart and Sandy would fight twice more when Marty was playing for San Jose and Sandy still was with Calgary.

    Passion. That word sums up hockey. It is what makes me be a life long hockey player. i started at 6 and I am 37 now. So 31 years of passion for a game. You can hear it in Marty's voice. You don't see (or better yet, feel it) when you listen to players from other sports. With other sports, you get the impression that they are simply having fun playing a game. But hockey is more than that.
    I have always gotten a kick out of hearing people talk about how grueling a football season is. Sure, it is rough. But it is 16 games, at its highest level. Once a week. Their hits come from another player that is running at them from 2 feet away and they fall on grass. They should try landing on ice after being checked by a player skating at them from 20 meters away,..skating at 80kmph and doing that 5 nights a week...for an 82 game season plus playoffs that can be as long as up to 28 extra games. That is 110 games if you count regular season plus 4, 7 games series that go to a 7th game. Add in a bunch of preseason games that they may or may not suit up for...and you will recognize that without a doubt, hockey players take the most punishment of any athletes in the 'Big 4' professional sports in North America.

      McSorley's attitude was that he was 100% OK with punching a guy who was already laying on the ice, and as hard as he could. That can kill a man. The stick to Brashear's head could have killed him. What I judge is that the NHL is damned lucky McSorley's poor judgement and his rationalizations didn't kill somebody. McSorley was pretty full of his role and he decided whatever punishments he wanted to dole out were just fine regardless of risk. He himself described his "best" fights as when he was calm. He knew what he was doing. So I do not accept a suggestion that it was out of the ordinary or even that things maybe got a bit out of hand or were accidental. At least with a guy like a Kordic or a Probert you can point to drugs. The Brashear slash to the head *is* the defining moment of McSorley's career. It didn't have to be, but he made his bed. Now he lies in it.
