  • Once we do a surgical procedure, most of the physical therapy work goes on at home with the pet's owner. Dr. Ware, from Laveen Veterinary Center (www.laveenvetcenter.com), demonstrates some of the basics behind what you can do for your pet who needs physical therapy at home.

Our experience was that there was so little information on what you will deal with in the first week. Get a sling or harness that goes far down the back. The harness was great because it didn’t cover our boy’s parts for peeing. Your pup may have constipation and that would be preferable to any other option. The sling and harness are a must for a #2. Worse though was our pups butt was leaking for days and he didn’t want to poop normally. The washing machine ran for days and I showered with him 2-3 times a day. And his little rear end got raw and irritated. Not all of that will happen for everyone, but be aware. On the plus side our boy is otherwise recovering amazingly well and I was already doing stretches and massages (thought it could be a groin injury at first) and he thinks he is healed. We are now just trying to monitor his mobility so he doesn’t injure himself. Best of luck.

This is excellent. I only got verbal instructions when I was picking my dog up post surgery and it was useless. Watching you go thru the movements while I am doing it on my own dog is really helpful.

Thank you 😊found this vid about two weeks after Zoey was stuck by a speeding car . No one told me anything about therapy. Your video has truly been very helpful. I had been doing the stretching for a week and carried her out to the backyard and she got up and walked out onto the grass and back !! , about twenty steps in all (wobbly for sure) . Thank you 😊

Thanks for this information and especially the demonstration. Can you go even further in the recovery process as far as what to expect and do to help my dog to recover. How do I help them go potty, can they do any walking, etc. My Australian Shepherd just tore her acl 3 days ago and has surgery in 2 weeks. I'd like to know complete details if how to help her recover. So any information and demonstrations would be appreciated. Also do you have a video on the surgery itself? Thanks so much ❣️

I have a question...in the video you show that you touch the knee right where my girl has her staples...she is quite touchy about it even on the pain meds so what can I do in the first week to keep from hurting her? We didn't have this guidance when she had ACL surgery a few years ago and we were fortunate that she made a full recovery.

We were told after surgery absolutely no weight baring so obviously you allowed your dog to walk to soon afterwards. At 2wk check up only then was allowed to do short walking after surgery then week 4 another check up and go from there

TPLO hangs the femur in the caudal cruciate ligament only! No one says this (the tibial plane is always level)

You want to put a lick sleeve on the wound with stitches on a swollen leg? And leave it on for two weeks -- ever heard of infections? Plus, the ones claiming to be good are about $100 and there's no guarantee the dog want bite on it.
