    OMG - I watched the ep with the interview with Mr Fantasy, and when you held up his flyer John, I was gobsmacked! It brought back so many great memories. I totally forgot about those, but man I LOVED them as a kid. I can't believe you found one! So incredibly awesome.
    And the interview was indeed terrific. I actually got my Howard #1 at one of those Midway Mall shows, but pretty sure I paid the $5, not the 25 cents (I probably woulda bought two, maybe even three, had they been a quarter :)
    And to clear the record books, my boss gave me permission to grab stuff, I wasn't taking a five-finger discount. 😁

    Quick question. If the area under the tape doesn’t get affected by the elements, why don’t we cover ALL of the covers in tape? 😮
    Another great show fellas! Love you guys

    That FF with the Impossible Man is a good underrated pick! I was a 10 year old Marvel fan when it came out and didn’t notice his resemblance to the older Mr Mxyzptlk (sp?).

    Contest of Champions was the first comic book I ever owned! Loved the series and it hooked me on comic books forever. I'm always happy when you mention indie titles from the 1980s like Mister X. Vortex was a local publisher and they had their share of weird titles, including Yummy Fur by Chester Brown who would go on to do some incredible work later. This was almost a 'new wave' era of comic books, which flamed out pretty quickly. Incidentally, I recently picked up Thriller, and it's just as weird as the rest of this stuff.

    So refreshing to hear John say that Cap #110 has jumped in popularity "not because of any announcement". Sadly, this is what it's come to: sudden spikes in sales because someone says that a particular character is going to be featured in a new film or streaming series. The days when comics were in demand because they were a great read seem to have gone, now it's FOMO and buy lower/sell higher and slab slab slab.
    Thanks for mentioning Marvel Super Action John, which is indeed a magazine. But I look at it as simply a longer b/w comic book. Unfortunately I've encountered a dismissive attitude from some collectors to anything that isn't a standard-format colour comic. To those who scoff at comics released in magazine format, remember that Man-Thing and Star Lord and Thundra's race the Femizons, among others, made their debuts in Marvel's b/w Bronze Age magazines. And the company's Epic Illustrated should be on every fan's reading list.
    I've heard from several sources that a hair dryer on low setting works to remove tape from a comic. And it's easier to remove from the glossy cover than from the pages.
    Oh such happy memories: FF #177 and other issues around that time. Now nothing in Marvel or DC is fun, the companies no longer take risks, the people at the top no longer know how to laugh. Please Doctor Doom, can I use your time platform to go back to the Bronze Age?

    Love the new intro 🙌..what is CGC doing over there 🤦‍♂️..again they have particular guidelines for staples with a particular label assignment Purple is Cleaning or replacement of staples
    Also to not note the wrong back cover doesn’t Matt Nelson handle the Golden Age stuff?
    I thought you were going to talk about the warped inner well that was curving books it’s been happening since May but is still a problem that hasn’t gotten fixed
    loved the show I bought myself my first Golden Age Jungle Comic Fight Comics 55 as an early birthday present for myself because my birthday is Friday it’s not graded and after today’s episode it will stay that way 😂 but it’s in great shape very well presenting cover 6.5-7.0 if I had to guess

      I think the only cleaning that will get you a restored label is extreme amount of cover and page whitening. Dry cleaning is fine as long as it doesn’t affect gloss and wet cleaning as long as the original staples have been removed and replaced properly. I like conserved books, grey banner but universal blue label, there is a lot of care that goes into those books.

    • @xboxgamer3389
      @xboxgamer3389 5 месяцев назад +2

      @@VolkswagenGamer Bronzeville comics recently unboxed an ASM-129 and got a conserved grade that said cover cleaned
      I think he said he did a little dry cleaning but he was shocked that it came back like that cause he bought an original owner collection
      I bought a TMNT issue 10 and didn’t realize it had staple rust the listing just said NM so I always thought if you clean that rust or replace the staples it’s automatically a purple label
      I’ve also seen a purple Brave and The Bold 28 with noted staples replaced
      It’s definitely amateur mistakes with this Batman I don’t understand how they’ve been grading so long and collectors have to point out it’s not the right back cover
      I thought it was bad when Blue label Re-slabbed books were getting green label because they overlooked the Marvel value stamp

    In a Q&A session, someone once asked Sergio Aragonés and Mark Evanier if there would ever be a Groo omnibus and Sergio responded that he didn't like omnibuses because they were too big to read on the toilet. Mark added that the struggle is they have not yet been offered a deal that has both fair compensation for the creators and a reasonable price for buyers.

    • @dngillikin
      @dngillikin 5 месяцев назад

      Correct. The US hosted the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. Spider-Man vs the Hulk at the Winter Olympics was published to coincide with that.
      We did boycott the 1980 Summer Olympics, which Moscow hosted, over the Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan. That led to the shelving of the Marvel Super-Heroes at the Summer Olympics and its reworking into Contest of Champions published three years later.
