The year 1991 was the apex of comic publishing. Tons of new comics and publishers. It was also the year the Power Team was on top. The Power Team was a ministry of Christian bodybuilders who traveled town to town breaking things and talking about God. Their comic awkwardly adds them fighting crime on top of all that. It is not a comic book that came out well, but talking about John Jacobs and the Power Team's comic is still fun.
Damaged himself for his introduction. That's dedication, folks.
I'm glad he's doing these intros again! Now if they can remix the new song to have the voice going"koh-mick tro-oh-ps"
chris doing intros while having health problems is wild
Can't let the props go to waste.
I'd say this was his coldest intro since the 'Kraven's Last Hunt' episode.
Chris has a wicked sense of humor. 🙂
@@dacedebeer2697 it's free production value!!
Nothing says “stay off drugs” like a group of maximally juiced excons smashing things.
No were in bible we have Jesus running around and fighting people. It's opposite really as he talks about love and forgiveness.

@@Mecha82 Stuff like this is why I always find Christian media so jarring, as a Christian. Superhero comics are, at their core, stories of people with powers helping those in need. Forgive me for sounding hokey here, but that's a perfect idea for a religious comic book! I know there's a few religious superheroes out there (Daredevil and Kamala Khan spring to mind) but I think a comic about faith and kindness is a really under realized idea.
@@Mecha82Jesus went into the temple, flipped tables and made a whip on the fly to drive people out. There's also an entire chapter of him telling the Pharisees how terrible they are.
He later told his disciples that they should invest in a sword if they didn't have one in order to protect themselves as they traveled in ministry.
If I may paraphrase Hank Hill, "you're not making Christianity better; you're just making comic books worse."
Hank Hill has so many good quotes.

Wisest man on TV
Im glad to see a totally jokey episode come up. These are my favourite ❤
Cheers Chris!
I had this comic as a kid and I double salute Chris for finally giving me the ability to prove it existed lmao
I watched this with the vague recollection of seeing these guys on a TV show. They appeared in an episode of Walker, Texas Ranger doing their anti-drug inspirational schtick at a highschool. Walker had been investigating a drug ring being run out of the school and some kid became weirdly obsessed with the bodybuilders.
It was like a very realistic dream. Thank you for helping be put that to rest.
I saw these dudes live at my local mega church. No longer the only one. Been regaling people about the Power team every time it creeps back into my memory. Was probably like 9 or 10 and I remember it being the only thing I ever liked about having to go to church. I wanted someone to break ice blocks with a sledgehammer on my chest when I grew up.
please tell me these religious meatheads got to team up with Walker to fight some bad guys and they got to do their little stunts that they do in their shows.
You can finally live now
Chris’ “southern belle” voice is almost as good as his Stan Lee impression.
My pastor had these guys at his church back in the 90’s. A year later he asked his congregation to raise their hands if they remember the power team. 1 guy raised his hand. My pastor asked this guy a couple of questions and it turns out, this guy was new to the church and has only been living in Canada for the last 6 months, english was his second language and didn’t understand the question.
That made me chuckle.
Beautiful.
I saw them live also! It was quite a spectacle, but didn’t convince me to go to church. I just wanted to break stuff and do back yard wrestling afterwards!! Very confused messaging
So a lot less successful than the Crusty Demons motorcycle stunt promotion, which seem to have been a stalking horse for American evangelicalism.
And...?
I kept waiting to read that your pastor told everybody that they were arrested for possession or something like that... Why was he asking if anyone remembered them?
“John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt, his name is my name, too.”
Odd.
What a Coidence😅😅
you sir are the MST3K of comic books.
"John Jacobs eyeball yells 'what happened?' "
i choked on my coffee.
Damn, that’s some beautiful acting by Chuck Norris. I can see why he has a shelf full of Emmys.
massive gains 😎 glad you're outta the ER and doin better Chris, thanks for another great episode!
That "melting" guy looks like he's about to start crying
And later, a crying guy looks like he’s melting.
He is... Having a meltdown. 😎
One of the many JFK clones in this comic.
Every time you say John Jacobs mentally I start finishing the song, "... Jingleheimer Schmidt, his name is my name too..."
I actually saw the Power Team live TWICE as a kid. It was everything you described and more.
Another great Christian comic to rip on is the Bootleg Christian Archie comics.
Also, whoever did the "I don't give a rip. I wear a paper clip" music is my new hero.
Those Spire Christian Archies were not bootleg, they were legit licensed.
Odd seeing the whole horny lusty squabbling Riverdale gang all of a sudden become wide-eyed innocent youth group kids.
Hey Chris. Not to turn your channel into a Christian comic book critique but how Spire comics acquired Archie and Dennis the Menace would be an interesting talk.
@@GerarddeSouza-yt3fc the artist on the Spire comics previously worked for Archie comics, and got the license to make the comics. Most were basically moral lessons. I have quite a few of them mysefl!

They came to the grade school I went to a couple times and it was awesome, it was a public school but no one cared because of the incredible feats of roided out strength!
What about the comics made by Jack Chick (not to be confused with Chick tracts)? My favorite is “Primal Man?” because of how scientifically inaccurate AND weird it was.
The "I don't give a rip!" bit killed me.
Chris, I thought you were going to start with,
"Oh, hi. You caught me dying."
He’s actually done that one already
Voice acting was on point for this one - that was hilarious! Glad you are feeling better!!
Nice to see that you at least got an intro out of your recent hospital visit.
Hope you're feeling better.
As someone that frequents the ER often I immediately clocked just how real that IV was! Hope you are feeling better man!? Take care!
John Jacob!?! His name is my name too! Small world...
- JJ Jingleheimerschmidt
As a tough bad boy I can confirm that I've never given a rip. But maybe that's just me.
That sounds exactly like something Mac from Always Sunny in Philadelphia would love
There was an episode of Workaholics with a bodybuilding team like that.
@@gregorystephan1547Then Adam Devine took them with him to the Righteous Gemstones
You should cover the bizzare comic where the Ultimate Warrior steps in for Santa Claus
Excellent choice of cutaway clips this episode - and you CANNOT top the "Walker told me I have AIDS' clip. That one is SO epically hilarious. :-). We love you Chris. Keep doing what you do so well!
The bleeps, the sweeps, the creeps, the blips, and the clips
Amazing reference lol
Thank you Chris! This episode was HILAROUS !!!!
I don’t care how strong you are, no way you are going to pick up a bulldozer blade.
Join the power team for $100 a month? WTF?! That was a LOT of money, particularly in the 90s. For that kind of money, I’d expect them to come to my house and do yard work, or laundry, or anything more substantial than a page from an old Bible.
Destroying a Bible for monetary gain....I feel Jesus would have some opinions about that
That was more than an actual gym at the time.
A Bible that old would be pretty rare and valuable, but yeah, if you're a team member for a year, you've paid them over $1000. That is truly insane.
And that was $100 in 90s money
My dad took me to see the Power Team when I was around 6 or 7. Not gonna lie, as cheesy as their schtick was, the actual feats of strength were entertaining for a little kid to watch.
"I don't get, what are you asking me to do sir??" I died
Frankly, John Jacobs was more interested in making money and selling merch than they were in evangelizing. A lot of the stuff they did on stage were parlor tricks that you didn't need to be a bodybuilder to do. And the other stuff was standard carnival strongman stuff. Heck, my dad was involved in karate for decades. He wasn't a bodybuilder and I saw him do a LOT of breaks like they did in their shows. Some of that stuff, back in the 70's my dad's karate school would add a couple of stunts like that to their public karate demonstrations just for fun. We used to break concrete and cinder blocks all the time. And I've seen my old karate instructor, Mr. Beaudoin break huge blocks of ice. I miss all those people from back then. Mr. Beaudoin and my father both recently passed away.
The sad thing is… I had these when I was a kid. My parent only let me read/watch/listen to christian media… so this was my childhood. That and Spire Archie comics, Gospel Bill, Chronicles of Narnia, Superbook, and Hanna-Barbara’s Bible Stories.
Same
*I'm so sorry to hear about what you went through.*
Hopefully you can stay up late reading whatever comics you want now
I remember the HB cartoons being pretty good from when I was a kid, and if course the Narnia books are stone-cold classics. So it wasn't all bad.
HB bible stories sounds kind of hysterical lol. Like I'm imagining Jesus and Moses with their own corny catchphrases, Judas as that ineffective schemer villain whose always plotting, maybe three backgrounds that gets cycled a lot and the final episode with Jesus on the cross going 'aw phooey' or something.
I thought the ending was going to command us to "keep pumping iron" 😂
The Righteous Gemstones had a team of guys just like this. It was hilarious.
5 shadows...because the sixth guy was in the car turning the lights on, of course!
... I think the sixth guy was actually the one who busted 'out of nowhere' in the very next panel...
Or because he was so short he was in one of the other dudes shadows
The Power Team always reminded me of one of my favorite quotes from Jesus: "Why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the board in your own eye? First break the board in your own eye. Then you will be able to see clearly and remove the speck from your brother's." Christ's wisdom is timeless.
The Power Team came to my high school and we had a big assembly to watch them. It was great.
Judging by his shirt Chris is better than me...and I know it.
Good grief, man. I figured your close to my age, and at this age, you can’t mess around with your health. Hope you’re ok!
That kid’s mom really is observant. She notices the business card that says power team on it, but not the mirror and the pile of cocaine and razor blade next to it on the dresser.
Holy crap, that is hilarious! 13:27
****5 STAR COMMENT!***
I cannot stress how much of a different time the 90s were.
Oh, those are definitely her's
@@Malum09 He learned it from watching her.
I remember seeing them at a church in my 20s. It was so cringe then and still is. I’m a Christian. Please don’t hold this against me.
Of course not. All of my family is and I love them.
10:14 …And that little boy grew up to become one of the henchmen of…THE MONARCH!!!
(Dunno if you’re a Venture Bros fan, but that voice is great!)
I met these guys once. A local church brought them to our community. They seemed like overly masculine, steroid filled dude bros at the time. I don't know if they were on steroids or not just gave off that vibe. With that said, they were nice guys and gave the view point of being dedicated to their faith but I think crap came out later about them that wasn't so great.
Wait, the gang members gimmick is...decorating themselves with paper clips? I guess Clips really don't give a rip about fashion sense.
And my favorite power of the power team is that they have literal magic from Jesus!
@@indumatipngtuber2790 the clips are like something Michael Scott would come up with
@@TheBeowulf At least have them be secretly possessed by demonic paper clips or their leader be a paper clip monster.
There was a thing where real-life punks would commonly wear safety pins as earrings or nose rings. I suppose this is a reference to that. I'm not clear why they'd go with paper clips rather than safety pins though. My best guess is that they chose something that kids would have a hard time hurting themselves with.
My best guess is they were trying to riff on punk fashion with using safety pins and what not
Dude pleeeease make more videos like this of bad comics hahahaha, I'm cracking up these are my favorites of yours. Batman Odyssey, Spiderman versus the zodiac guy, the deadpool one, those are hilarious and I've watched them like a dozen times each. I love the ones about good comics but these are too good hahahahaha
Comic Tropes is ALL ELITE
@16:20 - *I hope the page they were sending is the one that includes Psalms* 137:9 *which says "Blessed are those who smash young children against rocks." That really brings home Yahweh's morality!* ☮️
I *really* like the way you highlight who is speaking on the page. That’s a fantastic effect.
The Power Team came to my church when I was in junior high. I don’t remember all the details but the show was pretty entertaining. I do recall one of the members was touted as the strongest all natural body builder, and I asked my parents “are they saying he’s the only one who doesn’t use steroids?” And they said “yeah, I think that’s what that means.”
Some of the jokes in this video are pure gold.
I remember the Power Team. They came to our school. I remember watching thinking“what is this”? Looking back I realize it was just a major vanity project that was disguised as a nonprofit.
This is now my favorite video of this channel. Oh my gosh, I never laughed so much with Chris than I have laughed at this video.
Lost track of John Jacobs: apparently he turned into Alex Jones
props to this comic for teaching kids that if you join a gang, you'll have to deal with an awfully inconsistent policy on whether or not to rip.
Oh man, I completely forgot about these guys. 🤣 I didn't even realize that they had a comic. I'm not surprised at all about the content or the quality of it. Thanks for the episode, Chris!
Nothing quite like watching Chris rip apart a bad comic book on a Sunday afternoon
It's incredible how absolutely every face in this comic looks prematurely aged.
I rememeber him by his full name, when he kept the "Jingleheimer-Schmidt."
The art reminds me of X-Men Grand Design
I'm glad you're doing better, Chris. This episode was hilarious
I'm not halfway through and while the art is bad the word and thought bubbles are so clean and crisp. Also the sound effects looks pretty good.
How did Linkara miss this one? This is very much right in his wheelhouse...
Thanks for the video Chris.
Your videos have been my constant companions since I found them in 2018.
Thanks for all the company throughout all the years 😊
Hold up... he's incredibly muscular, fights baddies, has a strange magical figure behind him that gives him super powers...and his initials are JJ...my god what a bizarre character!
I came here to preach the word of our Lord and kick ass... And I've just finished my sermon 👊😇
I remember when those guys would go touring, and they did a show at our elementary school, and even as young kid, i thought this was weird to have at a a school. I distinctly remember our teachers were extremely uncomfortable with the whole thing, especially when they handed out flyers for their megashow. By the next school year, the principal had been replaced. I was 10-11 at the time, but looking back, it was REALLY FUCKIN WEIRD!!
11:17 that hip-hop clip tho
I made that.
21:00 That guy’s a STAND user!
Glad I'm not the only one who was thinking that.
It's only 5 shadows cuz they're all TOO SWOLE AND HUGE to fit the 6th in there obviously.
The book reminded me of the MR.T cartoon of the 80's where he was traveling with a group of gymnasts.has the same vibes about it.
Unpopular opinion: I kind of liked the comic! A window portal to the late 80s/ early 90s. Mullets, spots shades, and musclesz!
Oh dang, you just unlocked a buried memory! I grew up with evangelical parents, and I actually remember getting one of their comics when my dad took me to one of their shows at a local church. I also met Bible-man once at some Christian book store.
Also, glad you’re feeling better, the intro had me worried for a minute!
The intro establishes this as the most expensive video comic tropes has made.
These guys came to my church in the 80s and I also saw one of their big arena shows, probably at the Memorial Coliseum. They were incredibly popular at the time; I remember some guys from the church even did their own parody skit called The Flower Team. They bent wire clothes hangers and broke styrofoam pieces painted like concrete.
Also, I HAD this comic! Even as a kid I thought it was totally cornball, but it was still an entertaining read. Clips don’t give a RIP!!
Edit: per your outro, I’d love to see what happens in the later issues, because you’re right, I think they gave this first one out for free and I’ve never seen any later issues or knew if they even existed.
i love your videos Chris, you make my day when you upload ❤️
One of my favorite recent videos of yours. I saw this guys in texas public school in the late 90s or early 2000s.
Not gonna lie...they look rad as heck
More "Power Team" please!!! 🎉😅
Is no one dying at the “walker told me I have AIDES??? “😂😂😂
This Artist looks very much like he comes from the tradition of Underground Comix. The best panels look like they could be in Zapp Comix.
This is right up there with the whakadoodle logic of Jack T. Chick. You should do a Comic Tropes on Jack T. Chick comics.
"We're breaking stuff for God!"
The Power Team came to my church 3 times when I was a kid. I owned that issue with the terrorist guy, Belladonna
I had that first issue when I was a kid. Don't know why or how; it came in the mail and my parents knew nothing about it. For a young boy who lived in a town small enough to not have a comic shop, it was a neat novelty that I read for a couple days then never really picked it up again.
Those are some pretty badass moves early in the video! I never heard of them - thank you for another sensational episode, Chris.
Chris, I loved your Southern woman accent. That was great and hilarious. Your show is the best thing for comics since Wizard magazine heyday in the 90's. Don't change a thing
15:49 wait we're only half way? that one story felt like a thousand years! oy veyyyyy
Is this new editing or have I not been watching? Cause man this was a banger
The Power Team has deeply closeted energy
Kelvin Gemstone energy.
Workaholics actually covered this with The Lord's Force.
All the best in your recovery. Crossed word balloons is a pet peeve of mine too.
Jesus Christ, GODDAMN, glad you're ok, Chris!!!! ♥️♥️
You make my day Chris! Hope you're doing good.
I remember him coming to my school. I really took nothing of worth away from his presentation. There was so much anti-drug, anti-Satan, anti-whatever going on back then that it just added to the pile. As a comics reader since childhood, I'm surprised I hadn't heard of this sooner. Better to learn about it from you than having wasted my own money as a kid!
Hope you're on the mend, Chris. I appreciate what you do!
While I love your in depth look at comics and creators, your strength is in a good comedic tear down of bad comics! Live long and prosper, brother! 💪🙏 😂
I want a Power Team Bible!!!!
Dude I admire You're research, really, I am good at research but what You do sometimes with info gathering is admirable, Greetings from Poland!!
That is true dedication to the bit. Hope you're much much better now, though.
And I am pretty sure I saw this or some version of it in the early 1990s when I was in middle school. Definitely lots of bending things and phone book tearing,
Hilarious episode, Chris. Would be fun to see where things go in the later issues.
I'm LITERALLY LOL while watching this episode. HOLY SHIT! This is some of the best commentary you've ever offered up.
God damn, this was funny! 😅
