      I wonder if you're equally excited to pay extra taxes to cover the huge cost? I've nothing against the Olympics, but they seem to leave every host country in deep financial pain. Even using many pre-existing venues the cost will still be massive.

      @@Dave_Sisson The point is that you could see it as a infrastructure project which benefits the city in more ways than just the Olympics. It creates jobs, makes transport easier and a more sustainable environment.

    • @Dave_Sisson
      @Dave_Sisson 3 года назад +1

      @@redthumb614 O I agree with you... to some extent. I'm sure that Brisbane won't build the sort of extravagant projects that were never used afterwards like Athens, Beijing and Rio. But I suspect they will build bigger roads, rail lines, stadiums etc. than would be necessary without the games. My point us that half of the money could be saved and used to reduce taxes while the other half could be better spent on hospitals, schools and transport outside the Olympic area. But Australia is a wealthy country, so I guess the Queensland state government can afford some unnecessary extravagances.

    • @uzziya6392
      @uzziya6392 3 года назад +30

      The city of Brisbane isn't. Brisbane City Council (BCC) is.
      Once a year the Carbon Neutral Council (CNC) releases a report estimating BCC's total emissions from landfill, transport and electricity from council operations and council contractors (last year it was 596,882 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent for example). To retain their "carbon neutral" status over the next year BCC then needs to offset the emissions from the pervious year and reduce their emissions by the time of the next review by the CNC (last year it was reduced 7% from 644,039 carbon dioxide equivalent). Most of that is done via renewable energy purchasing agreements where BCC invest in a Queensland-based solar power company in return for said company increasing their installed capacity, choosing contractors which have a low carbon footprint, planting a lot of trees - which is a big reason why 38% of the city is covered in trees - and general emissions reduction schemes like electrifying the city's bus fleet, capturing emissions from landfill, etc.
      It's a whole exercise and something the BCC has to actively work to maintain.

      @@uzziya6392 You've mixed up the Greater Brisbane region and the City of Brisbane.
      The City of Brisbane and the Brisbane City Council are the same area... One's just a region within Greater Brisbane and the other is the government.
      Brisbane doesn't include City of Ipswich, Logan City or Redland City, for example, but the Greater Brisbane region does. That's something that seems unique to Brisbane, as somewhere like Sydney actually includes the City of Penrith as an example, in the actual Sydney boundaries. Brisbane does not do that.

Tokyo 2020 become expensive because of Coronavirus.. so they spend more for that instead..

Each country could bid for a particular event, swimming, athletics or gymnastics etc this would make the Olympics more inclusive.

      There's no 'debt' after an Australian Olympic or Commonwealth Games, the cost is a fraction of a percent of GDP....Australia signed up for 100 billion in nuclear subs today, no one talked about 'debt' with that!
