    My Master's degree was similar. Mine was in Public Administration. I also received a graduate certificate in Health Care Management. For me, I like going to school. So I don't regret that I went part-time for my Master's degree because I was also working full-time. However, after I completed my graduate school program, I'm lucky if I currently use 20% of my degree in what I have learned. I have applied for promotions, but I am often looked over because they want me to have direct experience that's more aligned to the position I'm applying for. There comes a point in your career that the more specialized you become, the harder it is to advance unless you want to start over at entry level again. For some people, a Master's degree can really help, especially in larger sized cities where it's more educationally competitive to have a graduate degree. Where I live, in many situations, a Bachelor's degree is all is need unless you're going for a specific profession.

      Don’t give up. I’ll be honest. I feel like master’s degree don’t kick in until years later. I have a masters degree and for years I felt like it’s not helping me in my career. For the most part it didn’t. But now that I’m making strides, it’s definitely helping me. Now having my masters is so critical for those senior roles. If you look at anyone at executive positions, they all have masters. It’s because it’s weighed heavily when they consider you for those positions along with your experience. My suggestion is keep learning everything and then some on your job. Eventually those skills will transfer over to higher positions

    I know exactly how you feel..I am Haitian-American. I earned my undergrad degree in human services, concentration in case management. It was so hard trying to find a job!!!! my parents were so close-minded. telling my other little sister not to be a social worker bc I can't make income. I ended up working as an after school counselor. I knew I had to go to graduate school to be successful in this field and you are totally right!!! a degree doesn't mean anything without work experience, so I made sure I went to a school that provided clinical internships to help me gain experience, unfortunately, I couldn't get hired by them and even internship experiences, they are not considered experience.
    Now a social worker my mother help me get in contact with is recommending me to work at her hospital. Another advice, which I should you know, is not what you know is who you know. Stay connected with other employees and build a professional relationship with other social workers/agencies.

    I think it also depends on location because I have a degree in healthcare administration as well. I was offered a position as a medical support assistant which is currently in demand at the hospital I worked at. However, I agree that if you want a high position, you need to have some work experience. That's why starting off in an entry-level position is helpful.

    • @OrganicKeesh
      @OrganicKeesh  5 лет назад +5

      True, I definitely agree with this!! Location plays a huge factor..! I applied for many entry-level positions, none of which fell through. I truly believe God had a different plan for me which at this point I can't complain about :) thanks for commenting!!

    Edit 1: I just want to spread the word that radiology is a gateway to a successful life. No degree required. Just enroll. Xray, mri, nuc med, radiation therapy. They are all certificates. Caps out at 100k. If u are comfortable with making up to 100k a year, radiology is good route. Thank me later. And they are all 2 year programs vs 6-12 years.

    This was great! I have a Bachelors Degree in Intercultural Studies (Theology) because I wanted to be a missionary and this program really helped me grow deeper in knowledge and biblical knowledge as well. I did get a TESOL certificate so I could teach English. When I was in Korea, many people I met had a degree (it's a prerequisite for teaching in Korea - any degree) and TESOL only helped me get a job in a public school overseas. I think having experience under your belt is crucial!! I don't intend on getting a masters degree but I do value continuing to educate yourself and I have done some certificate courses to help me in different fields. It's funny cause I was JUST talking to my brother about getting some experience in the work field. I took out a student loan for my degree but it helped launch me into a field where I was able to make good money to pay off my loan and actually build a savings!

    • @OrganicKeesh

    I appreciate your honesty. My mother gave me similar comfort but I decided not to take it given the cost of college. I worked in college. I took a gap year before grad school to work. As a grad student I worked on campus and then full time. I am a grad student and I work full time and I have a side hustle. It's important for all would be grad students to look for programs that offer flexibility to accommodate working adults. Flexible programs usually cost less and have graduates that are employed in the field. Additionally, if you're in a flexible grad program that allows for job searching during the day and more time to study until you become employed. Imagine being in grad school working in the field you're studying for two years and then graduating with that degree? Much better prospects and less debt.

I don't fully regret pursuing my masters, because I need my masters and PhD for the career I am pursuing. I do regret pursuing my masters at my current institution because the environment is terrible and lacks major resources and support for students like myself. If what I now know, I would've pursued my masters at a different institution for a more positive experience!

    Very practical advice. But, let me tell you something. Please don’t allow the devil to gain a foothold in your mind about this. You don’t have the experience....yet. You don’t have the credentials.....yet. Contact your former professors/classmates and just be real with them about it. Be like, “hey, I don’t have the experience that my degree requires. Will you help me?” You’d be amazed at how many doors will open! Also, regarding your student loan debt? Don’t let that stress you out, either. Pay it off little by little. You’re a child of God! Don’t allow the devil to win! 😊😘❤️🙏🏽

    Try working for a nursing agency as a client services manager. I have worked with women with your degree. You will get a lot of general business experience and then move up to higher paying positions. Most cities have many agencies that deal with private duty cases or agencies that do home visits. The CSMs work in the office doing scheduling, payroll, orientation, etc.

    I congratulate you for receiving your Master's degree. Were you able to find work in the end? I got my MA in Classical Studies last year at the Open University in the U.K. and there are no jobs available for this field. I just did the Master's for general interest. I cannot work because I am on the Disability pension due to my Asperger's Syndrome. Did you study at an American university because the tuition fees are very high there? My first part of my MA in Classical Studies was over $5,000 and my second part of the MA in Classical Studies costed over $11,000.

For me, I am going to my Certificate of Accomplished Human Services In Coastline Community College at Fountain Valley, CA. Yes! You are correct!!! You need experience in order to graduated college. luckly for me I started Human Services 2016 and I start doing volunteer at Abrazar, finished the class last year with a Letter B!. I put that under my resume to Managers or Supervisor to look at it when I am graduated college! That is sucks that you got no career. It was weird! I hope you got a career! GOD BLESSED YOU!

Then she didn’t work, while she earned her graduate degree. She’s now a director in an elder care living facility (not a nursing home). We all have to start somewhere, apply for medical office assistant jobs or anything related to get in the door. Once you get the experience, you will be set ! Health Admins make good money.

    Degrees where u have to continue school after a bachelors are designed for people who have parents that can pay for their school. The debt is not worth it. I have a useless bachelors. Joined the army byt luckily got xray tech. As a xray tech I make more than people with masters. Then I got registered in cat scan and mri. Over 60k in texas. I know people who use their masters and work for the state and make less then $20 bucks an hour.. MRI makes more than a nurse with half the headache. If you are looking to make decent money, look into nuclear medicine tech. It's the pinnacle of radiology salary vs paying for a masters or doctorate program. Also radiation therapy. No degree required. It's a certificate that makes 90k a year. Crazy.
