  • Back with sound - A longer, different version of the sand dance featuring more of Betty - actually Patsy Knox, grand-daughter of the original Betty! Still the same Wilson and Keppel though.

    ❤️❤️❤️ ...
Wilson, Keppel and Betty formed a popular British music hall and vaudeville act in the middle decades of the 20th century. They capitalised on the fashion for Ancient Egyptian imagery following the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun. The "sand dance" that formed the highlight of their act was a parody of postures from Egyptian tomb paintings, combined with references to Arabic costume. The lithe and extremely lanky Wilson and Keppel, who wore long moustaches and make-up to emphasise the sharp angularity of their features and make them appear almost identical, demonstrated their impressive suppleness in adopting wild gestures and dancing in identical "stereo" movements, while Betty joined their antics. The act included a soft-shoe routine performed on a layer of sand spread on the stage to create a rhythmic scratching with their shuffling feet and was usually performed to the familiar Egyptian Ballet (1875), by Alexandre Luigini.

After the discovery of King Tut's tomb and all its amazing contents in the early 1920's, the West went crazy for all things Egyptian. This mania continued for several years. We can see it here in the entertainment of the time.

Patsy Knox was indeed Betty Knox's daughter, taking over during the war years, after the war there were several other "Bettys", till the retirement of Joe Keppel. The BBC did a radio programme on the "other" Bettys, quite a few appeared with them.
Betty had started on Stage with Jack Benny, appearing on his radio show, before joining the act in the US, before coming to the UK, where the act remained popular till the 1950's retirements of Keppel and Wilson.

Betty (or in this case Patsy the daughter of the original Betty) had her arm badly hurt in an accident. You can see she only uses one arm for the weight of a cartwheel, and has to cover her disabled arm. One of the two leads, Wilson or Keppel, spent a lot of money trying to help her arm. The other was rather aloof from the group.

The music for Patsy's solo at the end is Raymond Scott's "Twilight in Turkey".

As with so much British humour up till the 1980s there was a lot of sexual innuendo, here obviously homosexual. It is something I find curious not funny.
